1. this is a very good complilation of old school rap. This is good for the soul. Classic stuff. Caveat: the 2000 release was censored. Some tracks were 'beeped' on the the curse words. Just not acceptable. All they should do is put an advisory sticker on the package and let the buyer decide. Aside from the censoring, for which I docked a star, the music is amazing.



2. This here is the illest, most complete GMF & Furious 5 collection available on CD, period! no other comes close! Where else would you find the 1979 trk. originally released on ENJOY rcds. "SUPERAPPIN'" at? Or trks. from the super rare, impossible to find 1989 album "PIANO"? I didn't think so! It even has cuts from the BEAT-STREET sound track!! 'nuff said, cop it!!



3. Unbelevable beats, rhymes, messages and personas... "I'm kieth cowboy and you're my cow / watcha m.c's gonna do now?" It just don't get any better than that...



4. This is the real deal. Old school style/ new school motivator.
   When rap was fresh and exciting. Now all there is hooked on phonics-a,e,i,o,u. Go back in time when the streets were alive.
   Throw your your hands in the air and wave them like you just don't care. If rap is your way of life and you do what you like
   then this is the Truth. So when the white man is bringing you down, throw this on and come back to the light.Long live Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. Mellie Mel kicks it Strong.

5. This box set is the definitive collection of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's music. It has all the classics. It also has forgotten gems like "Step Off" and more recent releases like "Freestyle" and "Drug Wars." Unfortunately, it doesn't touch on Grandmaster Flash' Electra years ("Sign of the Times" and "Girls Love The Way He Spins" would have been nice additions). However, it more than makes up for this with classics missing from most compilations like "She's Fresh," "It's A Shame" and "Super Rappin'". The music of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, in their various formulations, influenced the music we listen to today more than any other group since the 1970's. Whether you're a fan of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, a fan of rap music in general, a music historian or someone who just wants to reminisce on the days when rap was still an underground culture, this is the CD collection for you. Hopefully, it will remain available for generations to come. The influence of their music definitely will.

1. This is a "partial" waste of money. Tracks that contain profanity are censored.
   
   Like the first reviewer, I don't understand why Tommy Boy even bothered to release this.
   
   This is a comprehensive release. I love all the tracks. But the censorship completely ruins some of the tracks. For example, Tim Dog's "F**k Compton" is completely ruined.
   
   There is also no disclaimer stating that tracks are censored. Isn't this unethical.
   
   My advice - do not buy.
   
   Tommy Boy needs to set this straight.



2. I received this box set for Christmas and was amazed at the comprehensive track listing. I've been listening to hip hop for over 20 years now. To have all of these classic tracks in digital format is a great prospect - a lot of these tracks I only have on cassette or vinyl.
   
   But, as I listened to these tracks, I was dismayed to find that any profanity in the tracks is 'reversed' to make it into a 'clean' version. For a lot of the tracks, this isn't too much of a problem, but ones that do have profanity, it's really annoying - the NWA tracks are pretty laughable especially when there's profanity in the chorus, like "@#$^ tha Police". Even for tracks with a few pieces of profanity, like La Di Da Di, it just really detracts from the experience of the track.
   
   For someone to put such an amazing collection together and then ruin it by editing the tracks because they didn't want to put a 'parental advisory' sticker on it is utterly deplorable. It's just really disappointing considering the impressively expansive track listing. I can't believe that they did this - especially since it's put together by Tommy Boy records - a legendary label in their own right. They should really know better.
   
   I'm especially amazed that they don't mention in the product description that all the tracks have been 'cleaned'. It's really kind of deceptive since potential buyers are assuming that they're getting the original unadulterated tracks. Be aware that this is definitely not the case. If I had paid for this myself, I'd probably return it because I would have felt deceived since the censorship is not mentioned in the product description at all - nor anywhere on the box set packaging.
   
   Shame on you, Tommy Boy. I'm really disappointed.

1. The most notable music movement of the late 80's and 90's, the AJ Old Testament it is. From Galiano and BNH to Corduroy and JTQ, this has got all the 'hits' from 88 to 96. Yea, sure, you've heard half of this stuff, maybe more, but when was the last time you heard any of it? Living in the states and not being a self-made millionare, I wasn't able to buy EVERY disc put out by this illustrious label, so this rounds out my collection. A must-buy if you know what acid jazz is.

1. People talk about "rap pioneers" all the time, but have no clue about what they're talking about, especially when it comes to Hip-Hop! The T3 are true innovaters, originaters and trendsetters of the genre, even to this day! Why? Well, for starters, Kool Moe Dee is universally acknowledged as one of the 3 pillars (the other 2 are Melle mel and Grand Master Caz) and creator of the lyrical styles developed with in Hip-Hop, that are still in use to this very day. KMD, along with the rest of the crew (including Spoony G) are credited with devoloping the "fast rap" technique in Hip-Hop (listen to "THE NEW RAP LANGUAGE"). Also KMD and Special K were pioneers in the use of high-tech vernacular and superb eloquence integrated with in their flows. The song "BODY ROCK" was the first to incorprate rock guitars (way before Run-DMC). It's evident, the lyrical legacy of Kool Moe Dee is obviuos on too many Mc's like Percee-p, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, etc. all the way up to Big Pun (let's not forget LL). The Treacherous 3 are Hip-Hop legends, true pioneers and masters of the MC craft. This compilation contains nothing less than true classic Hip-Hop. A piece of Hip-Hop music history.



2. remember llcoolj he stole his style from kool moe dee i own a lot of rap music but none as good as this with tracks like bad mutha and x mas rap from beat streat lyrics are da bomb.

1. This collection from Tommy Boy is by far the greatest collection of hip-hop music out there! It has everything! As I recommended elsewhere, get this along with Def Jam Music Group Inc.: 10th Year Anniversary and The Hip Hop Box sets and you will pretty much have all the old school rap (the essentials at least anyway)! On its own, Tommy Boy Greatest Beats an important piece of hip-hop history!



2. For anyone who is a hip hop fan, PICK UP THIS COMPILATION!!! I've listened to all five discs and let me tell you, this compilation iss off the hook! The bulk of these songs take me boack to my junior and senior high school days. You may be lucky to find the albums that these songs are on, but just in case you're not, this compilation is the next best thing. Put it this way: I took the CD set to work to play on my CD player, and I had co-workers 1) asking to borrow one of the CDs for the day, and 2)doing some of the break dances from back in the day :). Keep up the good work, Tommy Boy!



3. I picked this one up from a record store while searching for the "Stimulated" compilation and I had the money to spend. While scanning the backcover in the store, seeing all the available classics. It became harder and harder for me to put it down, so I gave up the 40 bucks. Did I mention CLASSIC tracks were available on this one? Old school hip-hop and r&b tracks from artist like :Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force, De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Force M.D.'s, Club Nouveau, Planet Patrol ("Play It at Your Risk" was my joint back in the day), Apache, Digital Underground, Paris and many more CLASSICS. Not all tracks are favorites of mine, but the entire compilation is a 5 star deal.

4. Tommy Boy Records is, along with Def Jam, the seminal hip hop labels. This box set features the label's biggest hits, but presented in a classic mix tape fashion. There is no chronological order to the songs, each of the four disk's songs segue together into one long mix. This makes for some great listening and the beats are still slamming especially on the remix disk that boasts some great work by the all-time best, DJ Premier.



5. i cant believe they grab all my favorite old school jams and whipped them into one great package thank you.... if your having a party grab this bad boy all the songs i used to chill to as a little girl together in a package deal not one song on these cds is bad its worth the money

1. I've been a DJ for over 30 years and I was mystified when this set was released five years after the 20th Anniversary Hall Of Fame box. This one adds nothing to the 20th set. I say skip this one and enjoy the ORIGINAL Soul Train box from 1994.



2. Many boxes consist of various songs by various artists usually mid level and chosen based on availability. The selections for this 3 CD set were chosen by Soul Train master Don Cornelious (sp?) and generally kept it to one song per artist. Although 7 inch single versions were generally used here,the variety and availability really shines. For example Disc 3 open with Micheal Jackson (Since when do you see a Micheal Jackson Epic release on ANY multi artist compilation < on another label even> ) The VERY NEXT song is from Prince,who to my knoledge has NEVER been an any other compilation befere (Except USA for Africa)

   A wise investment!




3. I REALLY APPRECIATE THE MUSIC ON THIS C.D. SET....IT BRINGS THE PAST RIGHT INTO THE FUTURE, REMINDING THOSE THAT APPRECIATE R.B.-SOUL AND FUNK THAT "SOUL TRAIN" INTRODUCED US TO THE FACES THAT WENT ALONG WITH THE MUSIC.....AND THE DANCES THAT KEPT THE PACE OF THE FEELING EACH NOTE CONVEYED TO IT'S AUDIENCE.......THE SELECTIONS HERE...FROM MICHEAL JACKSON TO ARETHA FRANKLIN...TO EARTH WIND AND FIRE, CAPTIVATE THE TIMES.....THE ESSENCE.....I THINK THE SATURDAY MORNING OR THE FRIDAY NIGHT YOU PUT THIS C.D. ON YOU WILL GREATLY APPRECIATE EACH SELECTION......TRY IT! YOU'LL REMINISCE ALONG WITH EVERY SONG.
