- I noticed the hammered reviews of this product.
I am having a blast hearing the "redo's" of these great, great songs.
The only time I resent it is when they don't warn you in advance.
Course most of us old timers have all the originals anyway..
I am really enjoying it !
If you don't have all the originals by now...
forgetabouit !
You have missed the best music era of all time !
- This is yet another Madacy collection of '50s and '60s oldies trying to imitate the overwhelming success of Time-Life's box sets. The only difference here is that almost none of the songs are the original recordings; almost everything are crappy re-recordings done some 20 or even 30 years later when the artist's voice wasn't in the best shape. My advise to you is to STAY AWAY from collections like these!!!!
- I purchased this Box set before from another merchant and returned it. These songs are not the originals.
- I enjoyed the selection of these many hits. You will recognize all the melodies and know most of the words. The production of these songs sounds still in their analog (not digital) and gives a verying quality from one song to another. Steve G
- Stay away from this freak show, a lot of these are not the ORIGINALS, the artists and titles are the same, but the songs are a "horror". I have all the original records on this CD, and I'll give you 2 examples, "Heartaches By The Number" by Guy Mitchell, and "Go Jimmy Go" by Jimmy Clanton, I don't know where they dug up these versions, but they're horrible. STAY AWAY!!!!

5 comments about Superstars of Seventies Soul.
- A must have compilation for all of us boomers and anyone who loves the 70's genre! FUN!!!!!!!!!
- If you don't own any of this music, this set may not be a bad place to start. There is soul and disco with hints of funk. If you really love this sort of music and can afford a slight jump in price, Rhino's 4 CD "The Disco Box" covers that genre far better, while their 7 CD "Can You Dig It: The Seventies Soul Experience" is the superior anthology. Still, these three discs will probably be enough for fans who are not quite fanatic.
- This is my music, I've long awaited a collection such as this one. And I truly recommended this for anyone who remembers what real music was like. 70's and the 80's its all hear.
- If you love 70's Old School and Disco...then you've got to have this set! All your favorites here together in one compilation. If you saw the video version on PBS, then I'm sure you've already bought it. That's what I did.
- Patti Labelle, the Stylistics, Maxine Nightingale, Heatwave, on and on and on. All the classics from the 70s. But redone today. Its nothing less than spectacular & incredible. A PBS fundraiser and something that will make your CD collection complete! REMARKABLE. Music that integrates ALL people regardless of race, gender, age. THIS IS A MUST HAVE CD!

- Released November 28, 2000, this four disc boxed-set is an essential element in any funk enthusiast's collection. The discs cover Mandrill's complete Polydor recordings 1970-1974 (sans "Mandrilland")in a sleek package fit for any Mandrill beginner or alpha funk pioneer. Underground funk classics like "Fencewalk", "Ape is High", and "Mango Meat" garnish the collection, touching on Afro-Cuban rhythms with buttery bass lines as well as raw Meters-esque jams. This collection is a must-have.

5 comments about 1960's Happy Days.
- This is without a doubt the worst CD of new recordings by the original artists that I have ever had the misfortune to purchase. My only hope is that others will heed the reviews on this CD and spend their money on better quality products not associated with MADACY Special Products.
- One star minus one star=zero stars!
Buyer beware. Madacy sells the bottom of the barrel product. Bad remakes (90% of the tracks) and poorly mastered originals (the remainder). Waste of money unless you want new versions of classic records. Just note: even then, they aren't very good.
The worst part of this company and their marketing is they lead you to think you are buying original recordings.
Don't waste your money...
- I ordered this but clearly did not read the reviews. The 3 reviews prior to mine are totally correct. These are NOT the same songs. I just listened to parts of disc 1 and will not even bother with 2 and 3. At least I only wasted $13.98. Not going to bother exchanging because whatever it costs to ship back to amazon makes it a waste of time. I can only blame myself for not reading the all-important reviews that amazon is very very cool and seems to have no problem with reviews that totally discourage people from buying stuff.
- I saw the words "original artists" and thought I was buying a CD of the original hits. WRONG! Even if they are the original artists (and I have my doubts) - this is akin to getting watered down instant coffee when you were expecting fresh brewed Costa Rican! If you grew up listening to the TRULY original hits, then don't even think about purchasing this CD because it will depress you. On the other hand, if you are totally unfamiliar with the originals, you might find this to be... just o.k.
- If you remember these songs you WILL be disappointed. They don't even sound close to the original. If they are the original artists from the 60's, they should have retired in their 50's.

- Anyone who wants a broad spectrum of what the
1960s meant for Jazz, as well as anyone who just wants
to hear some of the strongest, most eloquent, and most
affirmative Music ever conceived, are urgently advised
to obtain this 6 CD collection. HERBIE HANCOCK: THE
COMPLETE BLUE NOTE SIXTIES SESSIONS is a loving
portrait of artistry on the creative move.
From funky Blues to Freedom with a sweeping upswing,
this collection of the acoustic pianist's 1961-1969 work
for Blue Note focuses on his albums as a leader, as well
as his compositional contributions as a sideman for tenorist
Wayne Shorter, trumpeter Donald Byrd, and -most
notably- vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson.
This collection represents the heart of Herbie
Hancock. Taking the finest touches of Red Garland, Bill
Evans, and Wynton Kelly, Hancock emerged a nimble enough
player to tackle anything, and his work with Miles Davis
helped to reawaken the trumpeter's innovative palette in
the mid-1960s. What this set brandishes, however, is the
sheer genius of Hancock's own original concept; a key
factor in expanding the period's smoking hard bop into
the simmering dare and explosive challenge of the
then-emerging Jazz avant garde.
Not content to simply groove, and never one to
go "out" for the Hell of it (as most weren't, anyway,
regardless of Ken Burns' critical misassessments!),
Hancock was at the vanguard of the period's second
wave of prime Jazz movers. Along with pianist Andrew
Hill, to say nothing of the overall personnel comprising
these sides, Hancock was a key factor in relaying the
multiharmonic, polyrhythmic advances of the period's
Jazz avant garde into some of the 1960s' most stunningly
captivating, awe-inspiring, utterly beautiful performances
ever recorded.
Listen to the aural splendor of "Mimosa", the
tantalizing playfulness of "Oliloqui Valley", or the
epic portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. offered in
the sumptuous "I Have A Dream", and you hear a mind as
inspired by Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor
as by the finest purveyors of popular sound.
As the original versions of "Watermelon Man" reflect
over 40 years later, Hancock was ALWAYS funky.
The point is that, here, Funk does not condescend.
Here, Groove -sweet and nasty- elevates.
Contrast "Watermelon Man", "Blind Man, Blind Man",
or the turbulent "Riot" with the collection's closing track,
"Don't Even Go There". Of all the work on these
6 CDs, "Don't Even Go There" is the only track which
sounds dated and stale. A ploddingly conscious effort
for a pop hit, the piece's title, in fact, would prove
a portent for much of what Hancock would fall into over
the decades (particularly after he ended the brilliant
collective MWANDISHI with his Columbia debut, SEXTANT).
The strongest point of what constitutes Hancock's
finest contributions comes straight from this collection.
Digging deep, scampering swift and sure, Hancock is as
potent an accompanist as he is an improviser; a key
factor in the time-tested power of his finest compositions.
Listen to Hancock alongside the fiery balladry of
brass king Freddie Hubbard, the spirited thunder of drummer
Tony Williams, the deep-picking sway of guitarist Grant
Green, or the smouldering lyricism of tenormen George
Coleman and Dexter Gordon (Just to name a few who grace
this dynamic collection!), and you'll be floored by
what big ears Hancock displays here.
Listen to the sheer majesty of "Maiden Voyage", and
gain a vital insight into a master's most shining hour.
Selectivity and sensitvity, not showboating, not trend
following, rules here.
Quite simply, this is a feast for the mind and the
soul. Give your ears a treat, too, and obtain this major
contribution to the annals of great Music.
- Classical elegance, foot-tapping swing, romantic impressionism and bluesy funk - at his best, as he nearly always was during the 1960s, Herbie Hancock combines and transcends all of these elements in his work as pianist and composer/arranger. His seven albums and countless sideman dates for Blue Note records provided many of the peaks of that label's peak years, and this excellently remastered and beautifully packaged boxed set is a worthy testament to the early achievements of one of modern jazz's true superstars.
From the post-bop/funk atmosphere of TAKIN' OFF and MY POINT OF VIEW, Hancock's first two leader sessions, through the hornless Latin experimentation of INVENTIONS AND DIMENSIONS, the grand and sweeping soundscapes of EMPYREAN ISLES and MAIDEN VOYAGE, the stately rhythmic beauty of SPEAK LIKE A CHILD and the fully-orchestrated complexity of THE PRISONER, Hancock crafted one of Blue Note's (and jazz's) strongest bodies of work, one grounded equally in outstanding compositions, flawless performances and an unfailing sense of taste. The highlights of this retrospective are many, and run the gamut from bluesy classics like "Watermelon Man" and "Cantaloupe Island" to heart-stirring tone poems such as "Maiden Voyage" and "Speak Like a Child," the latter featuring a central trio section which just might be the absolute pinnacle of the collection. The timbale-spiced "Mimosa" is another real treat, particularly in its extended alternate version. A handful of Hancock compositions performed by the pianist with other leaders fills things out nicely - most notably vibist Bobby Hutcherson's take on "Maiden Voyage," probably the finest "cover" of this classic track ever recorded.
I could go on and on, I suppose, but in the end the sounds contained in this spectacular collection (as well as a thoroughly informative essay incorporating the original liner notes from all of Hancock's Blue Note albums) can and do speak for themselves - in the clearest and most ringing of tones. Mark this one up under desert island essentials, at the very top of the list.
- one very well balanced box set, since its the albums plus alt. takes

3 comments about Soul Train: Hall of Fame, 20th Anniversary.
- This is a great CD set. So great that the first copy I purchased during it's originally released was recently stolen. So I was thrilled to find that I could repurchase it on Amazon, since it is hard to find in stores. I'll never let this one out of my sight and I advice current owners to do the same. If you buy it, you will love it. Just be sure you tell your friends that they have to get their own and preferably not by stealing yours.
- This cd set is for anyone who loves good old r :& b. This is the only cd i have listened to for months...
- I have been watching Soul Train since I was a little girl. I have watched it change to fit today's generation, sadly. These CD's took me back to the days of my childhood in the 80's. I loved the music. It was all the same, nothing had changed. I long for the 80's, which really were the good old days. If you like Soul Train, then get this set. It is well worth the money.

- American Bandstand has got to be the best music show ever. I had the chance to talk to a dancer who was in her teens at the time. She sais her favorite year was 1964 which is mine.
I'm a little disappointed about the fact there is very few 70's. Also I'm disappointed about "I Get Around" being there insted of "Don't Worry Baby." Thats why I gave it 4 stars. I love Bandstand and I love this cd. I just think it should have more.
- "American Bandstand" was certainly a forerunner to the modern day music video-It enabled us to see our favorite performers up close & personal-Dick Clark brought us all the big names:Buddy Holly,Jerry Lee Lewis,Stevie Wonder,The Beach Boys,Jefferson Airplane,Creedence Clearwater Revival,The Jackson Five,Prince,& even Madonna-This set gives you most of the big hits from the 50's to the 80's-With the exception of "The Twist","Worst That Could Happen" & "White Rabbit",all the songs in this collection are the original versions as you remember hearing them on the radio-A definite must purchase for any oldies fan.
- The set from Q Records is wonderful - there are gems from every decade to be found on each CD, and the whole set is a great example of the growth of rock n'roll from the 50s to the 80s. You should buy this set!!!!
- This is a great sampling of four decades of pop/rock music! It's interesting to listen to all eight CDs chronologically and hear the subtle changes in music from the 1950s to 1980s. For anyone who watched the television program, "American Bandstand," and for those who are too young to remember it, this is an entertaining trip through time from Buddy Holly to the Pointer Sisters.
