  1. This is a different yet interesting sounding production touched by various genres. I kinda wish all the songs had the cosmic clubbing sounds.

  2. I've been a Point of Grace fan since 1999. When this cd came out, it was so good, I
bought all the cds of Point of Grace. I previously had three. I was amazed at how good
this was and how good their first two albums were too. I also saw the tour for this album and met Point of Grace. They became my favorite.

  3. I think most of you are very wrong. This is one of the best CDs that Point of Grace has ever put out. I like the hard rocking edge that they have added to their sound. I think that a band has to evolve and change a little as they grow and expand their music. Keep it coming!!!

  4. This was an OK cd. I like some songs, while others are just too slow. Sorry point of Grace and fans, but this wasn't my favorite Cd from you. The Free To Fly and Steady On are good, but this just falls in comparasion.

  5. It doesn't quite match up to the standards of Free To Fly, but I Choose You is still one of the better pop albums in Christian music. The songs range from fast pop tunes, to slow ballads. It's not perfect, but Heather Payne's voice sure is.

  1. This is probably my least favorite of all of the United albums so far (through I Heart) as I don't care much for some of the songs...BUT all in all, this album is awesome and way beyond its time. United, I've found, far surpasses its overhead, Hillsong, by leaps and bounds, especially at the time that this came out. A great album, worth getting.

  2. I own several Hillsong and Hillsong United albums, but More Than Life was one of the first ones I got, and I love it. This album was recorded live (as most United albums are), and like most Hillsong United music, it combines praise and worship with a fast-paced next generation twist (songs like All Day, One Way Jesus, and Shine For You), but doesn't stray far from the real focus--to give glory to God, which it does!
Hillsong Australia's youth worship team delivers deep, passionate, and Christ-centered songs (Consuming Fire is one of my favorites), and although the Hillsong worship team has done these before, the United versions are some of my favorites.
If you like SonicFlood, Kutless, Seventh Day Slumber, or Skillet, then take a look at any of the Hillsong United albums, you'll be glad you did.

  1. Chonda takes you on a hilarious adventure through some of the fun times in her own life and her family's. She won't lose your attention the whole time. You are sure to be laughing through tears shortly after turning on. Though much of what she presents is quite funny, she always finds plenty of room to bring a real heart-clinching, spiritual challenge as well. All her albums including this one are clean, funny, and sure to be enjoyed by the whole family. As a fellow comedian, Jerry Clower might put it, "you could listen to her albums in church."

5 comments about The Other Side of Something.

  1. Sara Groves heads in a poppier direction, with very satisfying results. "Esther" shines with producer Charlie Peacock's world-beat tendencies, while "Compelled" sparkles like a lost track from Peacock's former proteges Out of the Grey. "Like a Skin" and "Roll to the Middle" hum with the muted feel of Groves' earlier acoustic work, and her command of a devastatingly appropriate turn of lyrical phrasing is similarly undiminished. This album is a fine counterexample to those who are preoccupied with the banal majority of albums released as CCM.

  2. In 2004 singer/songwriter extraordinaire, Sara Groves, finally returned with the follow-up to the critically acclaimed masterpiece, ALL RIGHT HERE. Recently Groves gave birth to her second child; the experience brought rise to new questions and conflicts of faith in Groves' heart. "I wanted a guarantee that because I believed and followed [God], that my family was going to be safe... I went to the Bible for comfort and I found Job and Jonah and Paul in prison. So then I had to go back and look at what I believed about life, about bad things happening to good people," she noted. The result brought the realization that what we want isn't always what God knows we need. The insights that Groves garnered make themselves known here, on THE OTHER SIDE OF SOMETHING.

Musically, THE OTHER SIDE OF SOMETHING falls somewhere in between the more progressive ALL RIGHT HERE and the pop/folk of CONVERSATIONS. It's a choice that should please fans of both albums and disappoint neither, since she, along with producers Nate Sabin and Charlie Peacock, pulled off the stylistic marriage with deft elegance. Lyrically, the pen of Groves has never been stronger, as THE OTHER SIDE OF SOMETHING has the most consistently high level of writing of any of her first three projects, which is saying a lot. The packaging of the album is also top notch; a scrapbook of sorts with art direction that seamlessly lines up with the down-home feel of Groves' writing.

"The One Thing I Know" opens the project with jangly guitars and a brighter outlook on life, noticing how "the clouds just parted on a corner of my life." "Jeremiah" contains some of Groves' best word pictures, with lines like "I was standing with a sparkler in my hand / while I stood so proud and profound / you came and burned this whole place down," and "I was warming my hands by this little light of mine" - a terrific use of a reference that any boy or girl who grew up in church will immediately latch on to.

"Compelled," co-written by Charlie Peacock, is a melodic journey through revelation. Containing the line which gives the album its title, Groves also sings of the incredible contradiction that the Christian life is: "what a relief it is to know / I'm a slave to Christ."

Groves also continues to grapple with the intricacies of the marriage relationship in her writing. "Roll To the Middle" reflects on conflict and verbal warfare, but she finds solace and security in the fact that "all the complicated wars / they end pretty simple / here when the lights go out / we roll to the middle." It is a sweet truth that is beautiful in its simplicity and tenderness. "Undone" is remarkable for its transparency and vulnerability, as Groves lays herself bare both to the listener and to the spouse she is seeking support and confirmation from.

The rollicking folk of "Esther" tells the story of a woman who, unable to have children of her own, was called to Africa and ironically ended up with 2.4 million children and in a situation similar to the Biblical Esther, compelled to speak out on their behalf to the "kings of the earth." "The Boxer," which is almost alternative in its mood, drives its point home with repetitive lines such as "when you said this was a fight you weren't kidding" and the "bob and weave / bob and weave" boxing analogy. "All I Need" is delicious in its insightful recognition of how our "needs" in life end up growing in strange and ungainly ways, as the more we get the more we want. As the song ends a chorus breaks into "all you need is love," which you expect to be a tribute to the Beatles until the third line, where it fails to continue the right melody - the echoes to those lines are hilarious, however. The hymn, "Come Thou Fount," closes the project on a sovereign and beautiful note.

In the span of three albums Sara Groves established herself as, arguably, the top singer/songwriter in Christian music. If not the best she is clearly among them. THE OTHER SIDE OF SOMETHING shows that no matter which side of her life Groves is writing about she will tell the story with poetry, poignancy, and excellence. I can't get enough of this album. While it never hit #1 on the sales charts or was certified gold, that only goes to show you that popularity is no real indicator of actual quality.

  3. Sara Groves writes all her music with such conviction, it's hard to say any of it ISN'T good. All of it is a peak into her heart and her relationship with Christ. Every song is a story straight out of the Bible...but she also shows that she understands the deeper meaning. She's one of the greatest composers, and writes with her heart and not about what is popular.

  4. This is the first Sara Groves project I listened to. I'm one who sometimes reads the reviews after listening to or reading or viewing the subject and compare notes, and I discovered that this may not be her best project. This project was enough to make me a Sara Groves fan, and put to shame over 90% of what is called Christian music today, and it isn't even her best project? Wow!

One thing I've been doing recently with various Christian projects is look at the lyrics. There are some that you know are talking to God because the 2nd person pronouns are capitalized, but "God", "Jesus", "Christ", "Lord", "Savior" and the like are rarely if ever used. On this project, Groves chose not to capitalize references to God, but it is more obvious who she is talking to than other modern recordings, and there is enough usage of the above words to move her lyrics from vague to clear.

Some songs nowadays are actually secular songs from a Christian perspective, looking at a life situation from the viewpoint of a person who just happens to be a Christian. Sara's personal songs come rather from realizing that the secular event is really as sacred as a "Christian" activity, and treats them as such.

One sign of an artist succeeding is, believe it or not, mixed reviews. If an artist is doing their job, they will not please everybody. They will surprise and maybe even disappoint some fringe fans who want the artist to re-do what they've always done. But while some may not like that work of art, others will appreciate the same work, whether they be new-comers to the artist, those who like the new direction better than the old, those who are eclectic in their tastes (that's me), fellow artists (I also resemble that remark) or those who are true fans of the heart in the artist as opposed to specific individual works.

I enjoyed several songs, such as "Jeremiah", "Compelled" and "Boxer". I also loved her arrangement of one of my favorite hymns, "Come Thou Fount". I know Christians who want artists to stick to the familiar (e.g. hymns, songs recorded by other artists that are over-played on the radio) instead of the lesser known or original compositions. As a result, some artists counsel others to mix songs by others or maybe a hymn to their original songs. This may be where Groves is coming from in including "Come Thou Fount". Or she may have just included one of her favorite hymns just because she loved that song. Either way, she makes the hymn her own.

  5. As previous reviews have mentioned, The Other Side of Something is not the typical Sara Groves sound, but, because she is so talented, it's still good.

She changed things up on this cd, and I'm a bit torn. She's got a wonderful voice and her lyrics always connect with me, plus I love it when any artist attempts to do something different. This time, though, I am having difficulty getting into the music as I usually do. Don't get me wrong, it is still very good. And even though it is not quite in line with my tastes, I am encouraged that Sara did something outside her "normal" stuff, because that makes me anticipate her future releases all the more. And, as a previous reviewer said, it grows on you. The more I listen, the more the intelligence, talent and grace of the artist shine through.

Two songs worth mentioning specifically, one for good and one not so good, are "Come Thou Fount" and "Boxer." Sara puts her own personal twist on "Come Thou Fount," modernizing it, but maintaining its beauty as an all-time great hymn. "Boxer" on the other hand, I just have to fast forward past; maybe it's me, but it's just too repetitive and (I really hate to say it) annoying. The rest of the cd is all good, but nothing in particular stands out one way or another - just standard, solid Sara Groves music.

  1. Very coordinated and professional choir. Very classy and well edited. Songs are a blessing. They are a little stiff and traditional for my type, but its still a good DVD to have.

  2. I'm Amazed LiveThis is the best! The songs are uplifting and full of praise. Great music.

  3. This is both good music and good testamonies. I suggest people to buy this dvd and give to their loved ones and people in need. The songs are encouraging and the testamonies shows there is a God who can change peoples life if they allow him. The song "I'm amazed" has great text and I can recognise myself in it.

  4. I first heard the song I'm amazed on the DVD small group study When God's people pray 6 cession small group study by Jim CYMBALA. This is an awsome and very spritually moving study and the Song and the Story that goes with it is amazing just WOW. I really get choked up every time I hear it. I hope more and more people will come to know the LOrd Jesus Christ through the work of the Brookly Tabernacle and their ministry. God is moving.

  5. Even my husband was affected by this DVD. He's not a big music person, but the CD also plays in his truck often. The testimonies thrown in between the songs are beautiful. I particularly love "Danny's Story". The power of GOD can truly reach down and change a heart that's yielded to Him.

  1. I love this CD. This Cd consists of the best worships songs I know. Hungry is such a good song, it is followed by Better is One Day. This song will make you want sing and rejoice. I recommend this CD to all Christians. This is a great CD!!

  2. This album is in my opinion better than the original (Wow Worship Blue). The main reason I voted this a four star is because it still encorperates many of the older songs with the new. It is still a good buy though and I would say that it is about half and half for the old and new issue. Basically, what I want to say is that this is a very good album though it would be better if they used some more of the newer material to get it around and for a new experience with the God.

  3. I enjoy worshiping the Lord to these modern day worship classics. I especially like the first CD in this set, the songs "Light the Fire Again," "Rock of Ages," "We Want to See Jesus Lifted High," "In That Day," "In the Secret," and "You are God" are just awesome, catchy, melodic worship songs to the Lord. The second CD slows down the pace a little bit and most of the songs are not quite as edgy and tuneful as the songs from the first CD, but "Awesome God," "Shine Jesus Shine," and "God is Good All the Time" deliver the goods.

If you enjoy worshiping the Lord, this is a great collection of modern day worship classics.

  4. I thought this CD was the best. I really enjoyed listioning to professional intepretations to songs I have sung during the Youth Group meetings and Worship services in my church. Praise God that I have a CD to which I can sing along and glorify His name.

  5. This has to be the best series of Worship music I have ever seen. Just an awesome assortment of songs sung by people/bands that want to give their all to God. I have this one and Wow Worship Blue, and I can't wait for Green! A MUST for every Christian home!

  1. Carman fulfills his mission. Everyone in the family can enjoy the different tracks on this album. Whether you like a more alternative sound or a softer rock this album has it all. I would highly recommend this to any fans of Christian rock or of Carman himself. This is one of my favorite albums that he has put out.

  2. I am trying to find the video that seen on t.v. 4 weeks ago There was video with the devil Onevideo was in hawaii It was a old video that he had on t.v. from years ago It had taken him sometime to do these video That is what I am looking to buy
please e-mail me so i canfind the one that I want it was in 1996 or later with an audience

  3. I love every song on tis CD. I especially like the videos that he has out with this album. He really gets to the heart and this has something for every age group. He makes you think when you listen to his "story" son gs. Its like God speaking in a way.

  4. If I could give this more than five stars, I would! This is the best Carman CD yet, and I've got nearly all of them. His powerful, non-wavering message is unmistakable, this man loves the Lord and it comes through without question in his music. I love the commentaries he gives in the cover describing how he came up with the songs, etc. The music is very upbeat (I use it a lot when I'm working out), and keeps your toes tapping. There are a few more mellow songs ("We Are Not Ashamed") which are just as wonderful. My personal favorite on the album is "We're the People of God"!!! WOW!!!

  5. A friend had taped Carman doing a concert on the Trinity Broadcast Network. The concert was his Mission 3:16 one. My favorite song off of this CD would have to be 'THE COURTROOM'. The things that Carman says in that song really hit home. I personally am glad that Jesus is in my corner as my attorney-----wouldn't want no other person there but Him.
