5 comments about Chicago Box (Bonus DVD).

  1. If you want music buy Group Portrait which mercifully ends with Chicago XIV.
Disc five could and should have be replaced with the bonus material from the individual 1970s cd releases or a soundboard live concert from 1972-3 when the band was at its peak. Chicago XVI or much worse XVII and the rest is work the band should be ashamed of. This trash also brought in legions of dumb bell fans who don't mind a lethal dose of Michael Bolton in their music. Jason Scheff and the egotistical for no good reason gum chewing, scat singing Bill Champlin are the reason many original fans would not consider buying new Chicago product. Chicago was once a tight band that played amazing, complicated arrangements. Now they are their own cover band with sometimes just 2 original members playing formula power ballads to chubby girls who shout Jason! (squeal, giggle, giggle). When it comes to destroying their musical legacy this band has left no stone unturned.
As for the DVD the short but sweet 1972 concert is what this band was once all about. In true current Chicago fashion it has been properly stunk up with the promo material for Chicago XIII. What were they thinking releasing "Must have Been Crazy" as the single? Who made this video? A high schooler taking a television/video mini-course? Must have been insane is more like it. "Closer To You" would have been a better choice. One thing to be said about the Dacus era is that they sounded much tighter live and seemed to have quit showing up for concerts drunk from what I personally witnessed.

  2. If you're a Chicago fan don't bother with any of the many Greatest hits because they can't come close to this box set. It is awesome!!

  3. You either love or hate the MOR Chicago sound, from 1969-1973/4 they were innovative and exciting. The decline can be traced to Terry Kath's death and Robert Lamm's decision to take a back seat for the next 30 years. Just buy CTA and see how far they fell....or buy Robert Lamm's solo stuff.

  4. This set, to me, is one of their best. I already have many of these recordings, however, it's great having them in one set. The DVD is funny and entertaining.

  5. I have met and spent time in the presence of Lord Michael Ramsey and Lady Jane. A delightful couple and saints both in the true sense of the word. I look forward to reading this book and having it in my collection.

  1. Talk about a bargain! I just got this in today, and I don't know why, but the price I got was $15.98, now it just jumped up to $45! I almost feel like I stole it with a reduced price like that. But regardless, I first started my collection with Ultimate Petula Clark. That was a great introduction and all, but to me, there are only 3 songs missing from Ultimate that you don't seem to get on this 4 cd collection. But you probably won't miss them. I think disc 3 is going to be interesting, for her covers of Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Scott McKenzie, The Association, The Four Tops, and a few french singles thrown in. If you don't care for French singing, perhaps Petula might change your mind, but like it or not, you're going to get a few french singles thrown in. (I don't mind at all) Everything Tony Hatch wrote and produced is here as well, and I'm not too sure because I haven't read the liner notes too deeply, but it sounds to me like alot of her pre-Tony Hatch material is there too. I'll warn you there, it kind of sounds like pre-Beatles pop music of the late 50's/early 60's from the UK, and maybe even the US. (Think of Doris Day or Connie Francis pop music of the time). Petula Clark doesn't do blues, heavy rock or psychadelic music, but she does a great Wall Of Sound, or symphany pop music down to a T. It is interesting to think how Dusty Springfield & Petula Clark were the 2 sirens of the UK invasion that had nothing to do with Guitars! (Not to say you won't hear them, but let's face it, their instrument is their voice) Now that I have this collection, I'm going to have to discover all the songs that I'm NOT familiar with, and there are quite a few. I think if you're considering this collection, you better hurry, because Castle Music got taken over, and most of the stuff they released will probably go out of print fairly soon, so even if this keeps going up and up in price, don't miss out! Your iPod or stereo will thank you for it.

  2. It may lead me back to 60's 70's, romantic song that sung by Petuka Clark who has romantic voice that make me always feel younger. Note: Many hits of Petula still not seen in this box set.

  3. Fantastic! The sound of real music to my ears. She's a gem of a singer.

  4. This is a stellar compilation of Miss Clark's greatest hits and then some. Very reasonable price for this 4 disc set. So reasonable in fact, that it made me hesitate to purchase at first. Was it going to be as good as it appeared on paper? The answer is a resounding Yes.

The song selection is a truly comprehensive overview of Miss Clark's pop career. All the U.S. Top 40 hits are here from "Downtown" to "Don't Give Up", including the sometimes hard to find "The Cat In The Window". What adds to this collection are the numerous additional songs which include her renditions of many of the hits songs of the day (1960s), songs which were hits in Europe but not the U.S. and some delightful numbers sung in French.

Despite my knowledge of Miss Clark's work, which I thought was rather extensive, I even found a number of songs new to me which have quickly become additional favorites. They include "Where Did We Go Wrong", "Days", "Just Say Goodbye" And "Life & Soul Of The Party".

A major concern of mine re inexpensive collections is the sound quality of the recordings. Well, never fear. At least to my ears, the sound quality here is excellent. Occasionally, these collections can sound thin or "tinny". Not so this one. The sound is as full as it can be expected to be for songs recorded more than 40 years ago.

At this price, with these songs, from this artist, sounding as good as it does it, you really can not go wrong with this.

May 21, 2008 Addendum: The price I paid for this box set was $17.97 in 1999. Truly a terrific bargain. Although the price has more than doubled since then, and it is not the bargain it once was, I still think this box set is worth it. I still listen to and enjoy these CDs. In fact, recently just burned many of the songs onto my computer so I can add them to my ipod.

  5. Which is how concise, precise and incredible a collection this is. The lady who's been meshed into the "British Invasion" of U.S. 60's pop music swooned us through much of the decade with 15 Top 40 hits that included the Grammy-winning "Don't Sleep in the Subway" and other classics such as "Downtown," "This Is My Song," "Kiss Me Goodbye," "My Love," "A Sign of the Times" and "I Know A Place." But American producers of "Best Of" series never did Petula Clark justice, and the wrong was undone in 1997 by England's Castle Pulse studio. And here's its masterpiece: an 80-track compilation in four CD's that includes all the American hits and one gem after the other. Vols. 1 and 2 of the four discs are titled "The Singles" and Discs 3 and 4 "The Song Stylist." Nos. 1 and 2 unleash what they promise - the singles that catapulted this incredibly gifted lady into American stardom, and a few other hidden gems, one of them Ms. Clark's soulful and tuneful English version (titled "Sailor") of German singer Lolita's 1960 worldwide maga-hit, "Seeman." Vols. 3 and 4 give us what they promise: the lady's indominable style, incredibly conveyed in such "borrowed" hits as "Homeward Bound," "Elusive Butterfly" and "Let It Be Me." A buried jewel is the bilingual Ms. Clark's unleashing of a few French numbers, including "L'Amour Viendra," "Tu Reviendras Vers Ta Maison?" ("Am I That Easy to Forget?" a la Englebert Humperdinck) and "Qu'Est-Ce Qui Fait Courir Le Monde?" No one can easily argue that Petula Clark didn't write a chapter in American music at one of the field's most pivotal social turning points, and the lady's charms continue to mesmerize us. And, honestly, get this collection and every other "Best of Petula Clark" release isn't the "best of" compared to this, the one compilation that any music-lover and Petula Clark fan will ever need.

5 comments about Aerosmith/Get Your Wings/Toys in the Attic.

  1. Here in one box, someone managed to put together three of the greatest rock and roll albums ever made. Joined right in the center by THE greatest rock and roll album ever made.... I talk of course of Aerosmiths second album GET YOUR WINGS. Easily the most balls out, sleazy, rock and roll experience one could ever obtain.
On the ends are two more A-smith albums worthy of high praise. The debut, and the third, a classic, TOYS IN THE ATTIC.
It's funny, because back in the day, I bought a box from Columbia that included Aersomith albums 2-4, that included Rocks, another timeless... however, if you are new to the BBofB, I would definately recommend going for this box. Each one of the first three albums is the cats PeeJays.

ALBUM ONE includes the killer track DREAM ON, which was mine and many others first glimpse of the band. The rest of this album showcases a knack for bluesy style jams, in a unique rock and roll voice.

WINGS ups the anti a ton. And literally is one of the most important rock records ever made. Even the great Zep cannot match the style and attitude of this brilliance. Play loud and unrelentlessly.

TOYS is the one that brought in the commercial success, but never slumps behind the first two. Many hail it as the bands best (some say Rocks-so check that out next...) but pretty much all the tunes that get replayed year after year come off of this one... WALK THIS WAY, SWEET EMOTION, NO MORE NO MORE and so forth...

If I've done my math correctly I believe you get 28 tracks in all. Every one is killer, and these are most certainly albums that you should have in your collection. If you're cool. You know. If you're not cool, then go check out Wham! or something... ok. that's all from me. Later... Enjoy!

  2. It was great to be able to replace 3 of my favorite aerosmith records in one fell swoop. I enjoyed listening to all the old stuff that hadn't been on radio for some time. Also, my 20 year old daughter told me that "Get Your Wings " was awesome, and she burned it into her ipod. High praise indeed!

  3. The first Aerosmith album was extraordinary, exploding with an energy not unlike the early Rolling Stone or Who albums.
Their second and third albums were just as strong.
Having them all in one box set is a great. You'll never get tired of hearing these tracks.

  4. I own each album seperatly, and each one is a 5 star album, and to get all three in one place for this price is a steal, this is Aerosmith's first three albums, and maybe their 3 best, you be the judge. I would recamend this to anyone a new or old Aerosmith fan or for anyone who just loves good ol' american Rock and Roll

  5. As a companion for this boxset, you should really read"Walk This Way,the autobiography of Aerosmith" by Stephen Davis. As a long
time fan,it gave me a lot of insight into the band and the music. If you`re new fans or not,you will be enthralled.

  1. I purchased this for my mom who is a huge Billy Joel fan! She has seen him in concert so many times throughout her life (I've seen him a few times along with her). I know that every one of Billy's albums are her favorite, but I wanted to buy her a cd with most of his greatest hits so she could keep them in her car. She is very happy with this set. She loves the information in the booklet/sleeve. Her only complaint was that her all-time favorite song was missing from this collection..."You're My Home". But, luckily she has that song on another cd. :) I plan on buying this set for myself in the near future.

  2. I always loved Billy Joel and was looking for a collection of his greatest hits. From what I see on this compilation, there is no need to purchase additional CD's to "fill in the gaps." I am quite pleased with the sound quality as well.

  3. I purchased this collection to prepare for seeing Billy Joel in his 1st appearance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.Despite monsoon conditions THE PIANO Man proved to be quite THE ENTERTAINER!
Now I can listen to Captain Jack whenever.......

  4. 1973-97-Complete Hits CollectionIf one is "searching" for a Good Sampling of Billy Joel songs, one need look no further. THIS Compilation features ALL "his hits"; and THEN SOME. I 'recommend' A Matter Of Trust, All About Soul AND The Stranger. These are "my" favorites; exemplifying Mr. Joel AT HIS BEST. "Live" material ALSO is included 'in this compilation' (including Billys' take on the Beatles "A Hard Days' Night".) BUY; and ENJOY !!!

  5. I previously wrote reviews for the three greatest hits discs so I won't elaborate on them(see my reviews for the individual albums). The fourth disc contains some non-musical storytelling with some live performances and demos. This collection does span a quarter-century(calendar years 1973-97) of Bronx,New York native and Grammy-winner Billy Joel's career. To date,he has sold over 110 million albums worldwide and I guarantee you, over the next quarter-century,that number will be doubled. Not only does Joel hold a place in the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame,he holds a place in the Songwriters' Hall Of Fame since he has written almost every song he has ever recorded.

  1. The band that gave us Bjork. This is a box set which includes the Sugarcubes 3 albums Life's Too Good, Here Today, Tomorrow Next Week! and Stick around for Joy.

The box set includes the full albums filled with the bands most popular songs such as Birthday and Hit. Value wise this is probably the best around.

Personally I have always preferred the early Bjork to her later stuff (Even with the weirdo rapping on some of them) There was more of an 'indie/free jazz' feel to it, tighter music and less experimenting into the frankly bizarre (Ever remember the comedian Dawn French with her "101 uses for a Bjork"?)

  1. I loved this band in the 80's and found out they are playing in Cleveland this coming week. I will be there and can't wait. This time, though, Jay will be without Michael, as they have had some troubles over the years. Jay is the lead singer and it should be a great show.

  2. Gene Loves Jezebel is definitely a great band! They are among the best bands from the 90's. All GLJ albuns I listened to so far are good. Highly recommended. Don't miss it!

  3. I have been a Gene Loves Jezebel fan since the eighties, however I have lost touch of them in recent years. I recently purchased the two-cd editions of Discover, Immigrant, and Promise, and have been delighted with my purchases. The second cd for each one has brought back the reason I liked the band in the first place, containing plenty of rarities and songs previously unavailable on cd. They also include new photos, lyrics, and stories from members of the band. If you have been a fan of this G.L.J. era then you will be very pleased!!! Hope they re-release House of Dolls with extras!!!

5 comments about Bowie at the Beeb: The Best of the BBC Radio Sessions.

  1. David Bowie-Bowie At The Beeb ****

For die hard David Bowie fans this is in as few words as possible a must have and a treasure. This is a incredible collection of David Bowie during the late 1960's to about 1972. This are all performances of Bowie at BBC in England. This three disc set is different then the other collection which only contains the first two discs.

The first disc is a collection of songs that the average listener would not recognize as David Bowie songs. Some of the performances on this disc are uncomfortable as the range of styles is all over the board showing weakness that Bowie rarely shows. Highlights from the disc include 'In The Heat Of The Morning' 'Bombers' and the Hunky Dory featured 'Kooks.' But over all Bowie feels awkward during these performances like he had not yet found his skin.

The second disc is the real gem in the collection. This is made up of material from Bowie's Hunky Dory and The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. This is a great collection of music on this disc as it overs new and different takes on classic songs from Bowie's canon of music. Mick Ronson really shines during these performances. The whole disc is a real treat.

The last disc only appears on only this version of Bowie At The Beeb. this is a performance from 2000 showcasing Bowie showing his age which is something we never expected from him. For one he still looks 25, and acts it but on stage now he doesn't hardly move and performs as if he is giving a speech. The performances sound great but you can tell, not to sound to cliche, that Bowie didnt really leave a pint of blood on the stage. Though 'Im Affraid Of Americans' 'Always Crashing In The Same Car' and 'Fame' are performed fantastically.

Bowie At The Beeb is an interesting find if you can find it, it is worth the price but really only if you are a serious David Bowie fan.

  2. `Beeb' is a British affectation for the BBC, the state-run media which plans (or planned) all television and radio for Great Britain. Bowie was around when the BBC was implementing its 4-station radio broadcasting, and he became one of the first guests in early 1968. BBC rules were strange and archaic by American standards, insisting that pre-recorded music represent only a fraction of airtime, the point being that this would provide employment for professional musicians. So it was that David Bowie appeared with a crew of musicians to perform his songs live a number of times over a four-year period.
I'm a very big fan of Bowie's early work (reference my review of Images 1966-1967 if you're interested), but the earliest sessions on this collection are the least fulfilling. Disk one holds interest to Bowie-philes for historic reasons, but it is disk two that presents the artist in full flight. Working with Mick Ronson, his Ziggy Stardust-era songs shine brilliantly here, in some cases rivaling the album versions. "Hang On to Yourself," "Suffragette City," and "Ziggy Stardust" all rock with authority and grace. "Queen Bitch" has more energy than the version on Hunky Dory, while the songwriting brilliance of songs like "Changes" and "Oh You Pretty Things" come through loud and clear. Most telling are the two Velvet Underground songs performed here. Both "White Light/White Heat" and "Waiting For My Man" are definitive, surpassing all Bowie versions that were previously available and perhaps even surpassing Lou Reed's original versions.
For those of you who are lucky enough to find it, a limited edition of this package comes with an extra disk of Bowie performing live at the BBC radio theatre in June of 2000. Search it out! The extra disk is extraordinary, featuring some of the best live Bowie ever recorded. The band is phenomenal, playing each song to perfection without sacrificing any energy. This version of "Stay" blew me away, forcing me to recognize the sheer funky power of this band. Just as mind-boggling are the versions of "Fame" (a new, `improved' version!), "Absolute Beginners" and "Man Who Sold the World". Every track on this extra disk is exceptional, making it an absolute must for even casual fans of David Bowie. A- Tom Ryan

  3. David Bowie is indisputibally on of the most talented artists in music ever. His songwriting is always at a peak, and was always excellent in his early days, and that is proved on this fantastic collection from the BBC. All live, but you wouldn't know it because it's sounds as clear as his studio recordings. And how about those lyrics? Bowie is so inventive, and he's never gotten the due he's deserved. Look at the amount of work he's accomplished, and look how good he can still be; even better than most. He's amazing. One listen to this collection and you'll realize he's amazing too, i hope. If you're still in doubt listen to all of ziggy stardust, but trust me you'll love it.

  4. CD2 - The first CD could be a symphony of (flatus) and I'd still give this 5 stars for the nearly immaculate performances on the second disk. In particular, "Hang Onto Yourself" (track 3), "White Light/White Heat," and "Suffregette City" (featuring Mick Ronson making this totally hot kissing noise with his guitar)crackle with energy. It is truly a thrill to hear these old favorites in such a new (as such) and exciting light. Bowie and Co. burn down the BBC studios. Repeatedly. Any rock fan (but especially an old Bowie fan, of course) is likely to meltdown in ecstacy upon hearing this.

CD1 - Many hardcore fans will surely (sweet milk) over CD1 as well although I'm not personally crazy about all of it. Some of David's early Brittish folk period is represented which can be a bit hippy-dippy at times. The first 4 tracks, recorded in May of '68, fit that description although they do feature brilliant in-studio orchestral accompaniment.

Much of CD1 does in fact rock. "Let Me Sleep Beside You" and "Janine" are very good, easy-going rockers recorded with Junior's Eyes who had a short-lived collaboration with Bowie and the session was never broadcast. Bowie delivers a stunning solo performance of Jacques Brel's "Port of Amsterdam" (vocal and guitar). The same session shows off Mick Ronson just a few days after hooking up with Bowie for the first time. They perform an intriguing, half-written version of "Width of a Circle." Ronson really cuts loose on "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" and "Cygnet Committee" is positively intense. Some studio hum can be heard on the session, an atmospheric reminder of the electric nature of these proceedings (that may or may not appeal to the listener). "Memory of a Free Festival" had sadly been edited for time and remains so.

Recorded in June of '71, the last session on CD1 features all of the future Spiders From Mars as well as some friends on vocals and guitarist Mark Carr-Pritchard who played for a phantom Bowie project called Arnold Corns. Early embryonic versions of "Moonage Daydream" and "Hang Onto Yourself" were recorded and released under that name. The group stomps through "Bombers," a rare HUNKY DORY-era cut that sounds better (and less cheesy) than the studio version which I have as a bonus cut from the RYCODISK release of HUNKY DORY. "Looking For A Friend" is a country-ish, Stones-y rocker and they also turn in a rousing cover of Chuck Berry's "Almost Grown." And Bowie performs "Kooks" solo on vocal and guitar which he had just written for newborn son Zowie.

Note: Those concerned about excessive voice-overs from BBC radio hosts (like the ones that marred the Jimmy Hendrix BBC release) can relax. There's very little talking over the songs and quite a bit of interesting Bowie banter on CD1. CD2 has nothing but back-to-back songs. Tracks begin with actual songs, not the preceeding dialogue.

Bonus Disk (June 27, 2002 live at BBC Radio Theatre) - ****1/2 Excellent line-up (Earl Slick, Mike Garson), great choice of songs, Bowie in top form. Still, something's missing. A little too slick and professional, maybe? But this is great stuff. "Seven" comes off really well. "Always Crashing In The Same Car" is excellent and much more organic than the album version. The studio wizardry of "Little Wonder" and "Hallo Spaceboy" is expertly reproduced. This album takes on more definition with repeated listens and sounds better over time too. (Many live recordings can initially sound "same-y" from song to song due to same background vocalists, etc.)

We can probably thank Kurt Cobain for reviving Bowie's interest in the post-apocalyptic "Man Who Sold The World," wonderfully played here. "Fame" is vamped-up with a slightly altered rhythm, still funky as ever. "Stay" rocks out. And on the final cut, "Let's Dance" is reimagined as a Carribean breeze before, suddenly, the beat kicks in and the audience "trembles like a flower."

This entire package is most worthy. Highly recommended!

  5. I rarely listen to this although having said that I have been listening to it a lot more recently. The fact is is that this is a hard thing to recommend. You might not have some of the songs that are on here and for that you might want to top up. I bought it as an overview of Bowie's earlyish career ( I'm not going anywhere near The Laughing Gnome ). Which in hindsight was probably a bit of a mistake but I wouldn't buy this album if it didn't have the extra CD - call me banal if you will but that's what happens when you have collector tendancies in you!

Bowie's early stuff ( pre-Ziggy ) sounds anodyne and twee. The conversations you hear on the CD make Bowie seem genuinely nervous but pleasantly friendly. Of course he might not do one song " because to do it would be possibly over everyone's budget." You could take that as nerves if you will but this is the BBC we're talking about. Their budgets at the time were not astronomical.

I've said this before that when you see " Live At The BBC " it doesn't really mean it's really *live* if you've ever heard BBC radio presenters like John " that was quite tasty " Peel or any others you'll know that they say " and we have [musician's name] here live in the studio." It's in a studio and it will never give you a live feel for the songs. It's just BBC engineers working on Bowie's songs and in return you could I suppose think of them as session outtakes from his album. But one thing should be made clear - if you haven't got Bowie's version of Jacques Brel's Amsterdam, this is where you can get it. It's passion almost matches Le Grand Jacques in it's intensity

As the second CD moves and the classics come in you begin to think " this is more like it " and Bowie seems more at ease with everything. Notice his covers of White Light/White Heat ( " make me sound like Lou Reed ")

Now the third CD becomes even more sprawling since it tries to fill in all the places that the first two CDs left out. And it's not always a winner. Little Wonder and I'm Afraid of Americans are terrible songs but actually sound better than what they sounded like on their original album. Still doesn't make it good but at least you can probably tolerate it this time. But overall it didn't capture the gig very well since I saw this on TV when I was 15 and I thought the gig was fantastic. Bowie really had them going ( but then that was to be expected right? ), the CD just doesn't capture the songs well and though I like nearly all of the songs, it lacks the cohesion that the show actually had. Still, for the money I paid for this it's not too bad. But then, there's always a nagging feeling that it could be improved but whatever about that, the sheer amount of material you have here you can be somewhat happy if you want to buy this.....of course that is if you are a diehard fan. If you're not - try figuring out which compilation you want to get of Bowie. There's a lot of them around!

  1. Very happy with my purchase, and have ordered 2 other products since and have been very satisfied with all my purchases....

  2. Scorpions have changed the way people look at heavy metal. Led by Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker, their music fueled the late-'70s/1980s heavy metal scene.

Hip-O/Mercury's 'Box of Scorpions' collects every aspect of their career. From their 1970s years on RCA, to their 1980s years on Mercury, to their 1990s years on Sanctuary, they are all covered here. And, every single hit from every single era is here. 'In Trance,' 'Rock You Like A Hurricane,' 'No One Like You,' 'Can't Live Without You,' 'Another Piece of Meat' and 'Winds of Change' all appear on this set.

And, I give Hip-O tons of credit for remastering this. The sound quality is simply incredible!

Overall, if you are just a casual fan looking for a complete set without buying the studio records (Their RCA records are getting harder and harder to find), than this set is perfect for you.

Highly recommended for any Scorpions fan. ENJOY!!!

  3. After reading several of the positive and negative reviews of this compilation I have a different way of reviewing this "box set". Some were critical of the fact that it isn't really a "box", some were critical of the song selection, or the mastering (which is important), and some were saying that it is okay for the casual Scorpions fan but not the serious fan because of the lack of extras or B sides. But for an older, serious fan of the Scorpions like me who had most of the albums on vinyl and who doesn't want to deal with that format anymore, this is a great way to get a comprehensive set of Scorpions music on CD without having to replace all the LP's with CD's. I know that having the individual CD's is great because most of the songs that didn't make the top 40 or top 10 are some of the best songs available from any group but for $40 this is a great collection. Just remember to have fun with it and enjoy the music!!

  4. This is the most comprehensive of any of the best of collections out there, even the newest "Platinum Collection", which did well on the newer stuff "Animal Instinct", which was a vastly underrated CD, but everything is way better on the "Scorps Box Of". I have to say, though, the remastering is 24 bit and good on this one, but I think when the band switched over to Capital Records to release the "Platinum Collection" it must have also remixed or something, because the sound quality on THAT, especially the bass response is just UNREAL (awesome). The best remaster but not the best collection. Too many softies on Disc 3 (reminds of their new Humanity Volume 1, which is going for the world politics approach again), but we don't have as much of that on this Scorpions Box.

I can't give this collection an affirmitive five stars only because it missed a few key tracks like "Hey You" and from Animal Magnetism, "Falling in Love" and "Only a Man". Someone may disagree and I think most critics do, but "Animal Magnetism" was actually overall just as good an album as the U.S. chart-breaking "Blackout", which came out a year later. The good thing is this includes some tracks that will likely never be seen on a compilation like this again: "Don't Make No Promises (Your Body Can't Keep)" and "Twentieth Century Man"- both excellent songs and a surprise to me; finally some representation from the mighty "Animal Magnetism" album! Let's not forget this collection includes "Don't Believe Her" from "Crazy World" and also "We'll Burn the Sky" the od to Jimi Hendrix from his former girlfriend, who then went on to date Ulrich Roth. Lots of passion and some memorable guitar riffs. Good stuff.

  5. The "Box Of Scorpions" 3-disc set is probably the best of the many Scorpions compilations that have been released to date. Credit must be given to the folks at Universal Music for getting it done right with this set.

Here's what makes this set pretty decent compared to the other Scorpions packages:

    1. A fair representation of tracks from the entire era of Scorpions music, including tracks from albums released under the RCA label. (Not to complain, but it would have been nice to see "It All Depends" here).

    2. A number of tracks that have not appeared on other sets, such as "Don't Make No Promises", "20th Century Man" and "Mysterious". It's good to see different tracks other that the same ones that appear over and over again.

    3. Three discs as opposed to two or one. Let's face it, any compilation of the Scorpions that does not contain at least 3 discs or maybe 4 just doesn't do justice to the band or its fans. The Scorpions have been around too long to have one-disc CDs being released with their hits. These small compilations will not contain all of their best stuff.

If you are new to the Scorpions or a long-time fan, do yourself a favor and pick up this set. It has the best of what the Scorpions are all about and you won't be disappointed.

  3. It's a great triple cd album of Journey with a great boocklet with photos and history.
Para los que lean esto en castellano es una pieza indispensable en la discografia de cualquier fan de Journey....

  4. If you can't afford to replace all your old vinyl with the CD updates then this may be the compilation for you. It contains an interesting mix of old (pre-escape) and newer (escape-onwards) material, plus some that don't appear to be included on other albums. I've never been a big fan of the pre "Escape" Journey material, but with multiple listenings one or two of the older tracks have become firmly integrated into my 'favorites' now...
My main critisism of this album is the cover. Although it's by the same artist as the Classic "Escape" album, it has a look of a hastily scibbled pre-production version, coloured-in with a *bumper pack* of felt tip pens. ...very shoddy artwork indeed. yeuch!

I wouldn't call this a *must have* for Classic Journey fans, but if you're that way inclined, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this 3-CD collection.

  5. For its time Times3 was a very good box set. The booklet explaining the history of Journey alone is worth the money. The B-sides included: For You, Good Times, La Raza del Sol, Only Solutions, Liberty, All That Really Matters, With a Tear and Into Your Arms. "For You" featured a lead singer {Fleischman} who's almost a Perry Clone. Fleischman wrote Wheel in the Sky and the song Perry sung when he auditioned for Journey. "Good Times" was Perry's tribute to Sam Cooke that never made any album. La Raza del Sol, Only Solutions and Liberty were out-takes from the Frontier era. Of those songs, Liberty, was by far my favorite out-take. Extended, I think it could have been a big hit. "All That Really Matters" is the lone song from the bands latter era where Perry isn't singing lead vocals. The final two songs "With A Tear" and "Into Your Arms" were meant for the Raised on Radio. The most disappointing part of this Box Set is Perry did not return to add lyrics to these two unfinished songs. They were simply added as insturmentals but when I hear them I always feel that they were meant to be. I also really enjoyed the live version of I'll Be Alright Without You. Of course this box sex excludes material from Trial By Fire because that album was released after the box set was made.
