5 comments about On A Clear Day You Can See Forever: The Original Broadway Cast Recording.

  1. I wore the original LP of this show out from constant play...a wonderful, tuneful score that never fails to please...there is something about the music that prompts repeated playings! I now have the CD, and Barbara Harris never fails to come through for me..I wish she would have done more musicals during her prime..I have The Apple Tree and this one..I don't know of too many others she did...I might add as a side note that I saw Van Johnson and Linda Lavin in a roadshow production of this at the St.Louis Muny...very good!! They were in very good voice at that time..Again it is a play that kind of drags, but I do think the music fits the story very well!! Enjoy!!

  2. To earn a five-star rating, or to be a success on Broadway, a musical needs both a good score and a good book. Unfortunately, "On a Clear Day ..." has only the former. As the story goes, a friend complimented Alan Jay Lerner (who wrote the book), "I remember in the intermission feeling so happy that I didn't know how 'On a Clear Day' was going to end." Lerner replied, "I didn't either; that was the problem."
So much for the weakness of this musical. Now for the strengths.
First, the music. We are fortunate that Richard Rodgers dropped out of the project. He seemed to lose his touch after Oscar Hammerstein died. Burton Lane has provided some excellent tunes for a fine set of lyrics. The chorus, singing the title number as part of the overture, was one of the most enticing openings to a show since the offstage "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning." "Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here," "What Did I Have That I Don't Have?" "She Wasn't You," "Come Back to Me." All excellent. The only number that did not work for me was "When I'm Being Born Again;" I think Burton Lane must have been listening to "If I Were a Rich Man" when he composed this one.
Then, the stars. Fortunate again, that Louis Jourdan left the show in tryouts and was replaced by a real singer, John Cullum. And incidentally, unfortunate that Hollywood chose "name" power over appropiate talent, and used a different Barbara (Barbra) for the female lead. Barbara Harris WAS Daisy.
Just forget about story line. Load the cd. Sit back and enjoy the excellent music.

  3. This CD just fails for me. The voices are ok; the lyrics are ok; the music is ok; it's all ok. Nothing stands out as stellar on this CD. This show is mainly ballads and dance numbers. I love ballads, I think most shows have too few ballads, but this show makes me wish for more group songs. It's no wonder this show gets so little attention, it just isn't worth it. I think this show might be a good show for community theaters, and high schools, although there are some questionable themes for younger audiences. I don't think this is a CD anyone would listen all the way through. In today's world a listener would only want one or two songs from this CD. I am suggesting that you buy "Wait Till We're 65" and "Come Back to Me" other than that, not worth it. Of course collectors must have this in their collection and some listeners of older musicals might find bits of this enjoyable, but on the whole. PASS! Favorite song: "Come Back to Me."

  4. My father had the LP when I was a boy and I enjoyed the music. I later purchased the movie (Montand, Streisand, et al.) I watched it and then remembered the Broadway production, and wondered....

This reissue is faithful to the original recording. The voices sound as good as they did back in the 70's. The composer and lyric writer did a great job. It's nice to have in my collection.

  5. "On a clear day rise and look around you", that is the clarion call from Allan Jay Lerner, from his lyric and libretto of "On A Clear Day". Produced for the 65' 66' Broadway season this charming score remains one of my favorites, composed by Burton Lane and lyrics by the aforementioned Mr. Lerner. The team of Lane and Lerner had previously created "Brigadoon" and a few MGM musical scores. Then in the late fifties Mr Lerner who was on the lookout for a new collaborator, met Mr Lowe at The Lambs Club, and, well they owned Broadway for many a year. Lowe wanted to move back to Europe and enjoy the spoils of his life while Lerner kept going and enlisted Mr Lane to compose this exquisite score. Barbara Harris and John Cullum were the leads in this tale of past lives intersecting with present. The show had a modest run in part because the book was too muddled. I have heard that the book is being rewritten and there will be a revival. It certainly deserves it, lesser shows have been brought back to life while this has been sadly neglected. Meanwhile you can pick up the original cast recording and sing along...you can see forever more. A beautiful score, truely.

5 comments about South Pacific (1986 London Studio Cast).

  1. I can't believe anyone would give this a decent review. It's awful. All Music Guide calls it "confused and unsuccessful," TheatreMania Guide to Musical Theatre Recordings dubs this "Not Recommended" and says "this recording is an out-and-out failure," and Musicals101 chimes in with "painfully miscast" and adds "pretentious trash." They're right.
At this point you can pick this "gem" up for less than $3!

  2. This 1986 digital recording of South Pacific was made on the wave of the success of the crossover recording of West Side Story. Although it includes a little more music than the original Broadway cast recording, it should perhaps be regarded as a curate's egg because it hit some sour notes in places. The cast is generally decent enough to be top-notch, but is yet let down by a miscast role and the lack of sparkle and polish. But perhaps the sumptuous playing of the London Symphony Orchestra and the atmospheric, clear digital recording are able to make up for any shortcoming.

This South Pacific recording reunites Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose Carreras, fresh from Bernstein's DG recording of his own West Side Story. Dame Kiri may not be as sassy and spunky a Nellie as Mary Martin of the original Broadway cast, and her version of "I'm Gonna Wash That Man..." does seem a little staid. But at least she gives us winning renditions of "A Cockeyed Optimist" and "A Wonderful Guy", and an especially campy version of the wholesome comic mumber "Honey Bun," complete with the first recording of the choral refrain. Jose Carreras, on the other hand, is an exceptionally superb Emile, singing his solos with character, feeling and an operatic fervour. After all, the role was created for a full-throated opera singer, Ezio Pinza, and Carreras admirably copes with the demands of the role. His versions of "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly was Mine" are appropriately ravishing and romantic. The only miscast role is that of Bloody Mary, because of the jazz stylings that Sarah Vaughan brings to her two songs, but at least she understands the mood of the songs when she translates them into her performance. But Mandy Patkin, the only true Broadway singer in this recording, delivers an insightful and confident portrayal of Lietunant Cable, perhaps even more condescending than William Tabbert. Patkin fleshes out the two sides of Cable's character, with a hard-hitting version of "Carefully Taught" and a tender, heartfelt and ravishing "Younger than Springtime" that I consider the best and definitive rendition of the song ever on disc. The other roles are decently and competently played, but somehow the sailors lack humour and come off too straight-laced. This is especially true of their stiff rendition of "There is Nothing like a Dame."

But enough of the characters of the cast, and on to the way this recording is presented. As I have said before, the digital recording is atmospheric, sumptuous and clear. This recording is also more comprehensive than the original Broadway cast version. The Overture is heard complete, save for a minor cut, and you also get to hear a complete version of "This Nearly Was Mine", and a gorgeous version of the rarely-heard Entr'acte. I am fond of the fact that this recording adopts the "Some Enchanted Evening" finale, as it gives a more musically-satisfying end to the story as told by the score. The only quibbles I have revolve around the two cut songs, Loneliness of Evening, and My Girl Back Home. They could have possibly been recorded as appendixes for this recording, and made it feel more comprehensive.

On the whole, while this recording is not necessarily a good recording of SOUTH PACIFIC, at least it gives some credible performances from Kiri and Carreras, and presents the score in well-recorded digital sound. I myself wouldn't want to part with the Mary Martin recording, but at least this recording is not as abominable as some people think it is.

  3. This 1986 studio cast album of SOUTH PACIFIC is quite lovely. Jonathan Tunick leads the brilliant London Symphony, giving the score the full, lush treatment it deserves. Only a few middling shortcomings prevent this recording from hitting the heights of greatness.

As much as I love her (and believe me I LOVE HER), Kiri Te Kanawa's performance as Ensign Nellie Forbush is a perfect example of how opera singers aren't the best at adapting their voices to the style of musical theatre. She has the same problem on the studio album of MY FAIR LADY produced 2 years later. Jose Carreras fares better with the character of French plantation owner Emile de Becque (remember, opera star Ezio Pinza played the role in the 1949 original).

Legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan is a delightful Bloody Mary, offering up her own unique renditions of "Bali Ha'i" and "Happy Talk". Mandy Patinkin (SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, THE SECRET GARDEN), the only true musical theatre star featured in the cast, does well by the character of Lt. Joe Cable, singing a lovely rendition of "Younger Than Springtime".

Although I listen to the 1949 recording more often, this studio cast album has it's charms, and is well worth your time and money.

  4. Don't get me wrong, I grew up listening to the original, and I have the CD of the 1958 recording. The 1986 production is better, if only for the clean sound. The talent of the originals cannot be recreated, but the talent of today is more than equal to the task, and better recorded. Hey, I've heard a 78 record of Enrico Caruso. How am I suposed to rate his muddy-sounding voice on that old record played on that old Victorola compared to a CD?

  5. To re-record classic Broadway scores with opera singers is certainly an interesting idea, although some shows (ANNIE GET YOUR GUN for example) do not require that kind of vocal weight. But if that is the concept one should cast it with singers appropriate to the roles: DeBeque was written as a bass. The character is French. Jose Carreras has a wonderful tenor voice ...... and he is Spanish! Kiri Te Kanawa tries hard to sound like she is from the American mid-west but her performance is wildly inconsistant. Only Many Patinkin brings some new character insight to Cable and gives a lovely, understated performance of "Younger Than Springtime." But his performance of "Carefully Taught" is ruined by a curious new orchestration that syncopates the song in such a way as to detract from its powerful lyric. Then there's Sarah Vaughan's oddly mannered take on Bloody Mary, totally lacking the mystery and exoticism the role cries out for.

One of the big plusses of this disc is the London Symphony orchestra and the fact that the complete Overture, Entr'acte and several orchestral passages not previously recorded are included, but it does not help when the singing starts. Columbia's original cast album with Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza is the one to get. Those in need of a more complete recording would be far better served by the recent 2 CD set on JAY than by this dreadful disc.

Although this album sold very well when it was released (it was the only SOUTH PACIFIC avaialble on CD at the time) it has also turned up in huge quantities in used CD stores. I suspect most folks who bought it quickly replaced it with the Broadway disc when it finally made an appearance on CD. If you are really curious buy this one used!

5 comments about Modern Jazz Performances Of Songs From My Fair Lady.

  1. I owned this LP in my twenties, when I listened to mostly jazz and classical music genres. I had always liked show tunes and the the music from My Fair Lady, especially. Andre Previn's ingenious renditions and improvisations to these songs are typical 60's jazz. This CD reproduction is truly a classic and one that should make up any collection of late 50's and 60's piano-based jazz trios.

  2. Like others, I originally bought the LP back in the Fifties. It was always a favourite but of course vinyl dosen't retain its quality forever. What a great surprise then to find the CD was available thru Amazon.Since receiving this updated version,I have found that the quality of this recording has not dated one bit. Unlike some CDs, every track is a winner! Andre Previn has retained the essence of these memorable compositions but at the same time has added some pretty enjoyable, but tight improvisations on piano. Meanwhile the rhythm section , compliments of Manne & Vinegar set up the perfect platform for Previn as they drive each number along like a steam engine! A GREAT recording!

  3. This was one of the earliest LP's that I bought low those many years ago when I firts began to collect jazz. When I saw it in CD formatt, I jumped to buy it. Previn, as usual is suburb. Leroy Vinneger enhances the group's sound with a solid base line: he is unabtrusively always back there. The bottom line, however, is Shelly. What a supurb drummer! Listen to how he drives the group through the songs of this great Broadway show. As an old drummer I swear that I can hear him "play" some of the melody on his instrument. Add this one to your collection.

  4. For those of a certain age "My Fair Lady" was the definition of popular musical theatre. During it's heyday on stage and film a number of jazz ensembles added individual MFL tunes to their repetoire and a dozen or more jazz LP's covered the entire Lerner & Loewe score. (The Verve LP "Oscar Peterson Plays My Fair Lady" ranks at the very top.)

One of the best is still with us and has been gloriously remastered with the K2 20bit process. These cuts sound like they were recorded last week rather than almost 50 years ago. While Shelly Manne (who, along with bassist Leroy Vinnegar, was THE rhythm of the "West Coast Sound") is one of my favorite drummers he often "takes charge" of his groups, which is fine in his horn based quarts and quints but he can overpower a trio with ease. Here he wisely dials it back a notch or two allowing Andre Previn and Leroy Vinnegar to investigate and develop some of the most beautiful music to ever enter the American (English?) Songbook.

Previn, in particular, seem to be at home with this material. His tempo and harmonic interplay breath life and vitality into tunes that were pop hits of their day. While everyone's favorite will likely be the beautiful "On the Street Where You Live", my personal pick is the haunting and lovely "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" which Previn handles better than ANYONE (including the aforementioned Oscar Peterson).

The ensuing album is a true classic that has withstood the test of time. Besides being a stunning take on what many consider to be the twentieth century's finest example of musical theatre (OK, that's my opinion) it is also a testament to mid century "modern jazz" before that term became perjoritive.

    Buy this CD, it's timeless.

  5. Have searched high & low for this album, so Amazon thank you. Andre Previn is so cool on this album along with all of the other musicians. My favorite since college days. From "On the Street Where You Live" to the end, the musical interpretation from the Broadway play is magnificant and has haunted me all these years. Can't wait to hear it again!

5 comments about The Christmas Album.

  1. We owned this album on vinyl when I was growing up, and unfortunately, it's long since disappeared. Finding it on CD was great as this is one of the best compilations of classic Christmas carols. My only regret is that it doesn't include the great foreword that came with the vinyl version. I wish I could remember who wrote that foreword as it was one of the most eloquent and bittersweet descriptions of how the meaning of Christmas changes as you grow up.

  2. I love this CD. It has all of the traditional carols sung by traditional artists. I first got this compilation on cassette and wore it out listening to it every year, especially when traveling to relatives' homes over the Christmas holidays. I even bought cassettes for my kids when they moved away from home. When we bought a car that did not have a cassette player, I bought the CD the next Christmas. Now, I am buying a CD for my son who needs it on CD to play for his newly growing family.

  3. i grew up listening to this very album every year. i know every song and they are all close to my heart. great cd.

  4. My family owned this compilation on vinyl and played it every year over and over. As my children are growing up I wanted to play it for them but found the album to be in less than desirable condition. I was so excited when I found it in CD format that I bought one for my dad and sisters, too. You know it's a good compilation if it's still around after more than 20 years!

  5. This CD was a great surprise to me. I spend Xmas alone & music makes my Christmas a happy one. The music is uplifting & brings back memories of an Old Fashioned Xmas...

Highly Recommend This One! Merry Christmas Everyone!

5 comments about Jesus Christ Superstar (Highlights from the 1971 Original Broadway Cast).

  1. This version of Jesus Christ Superstar is the definitive version with regards to musicianship. Although lacking the vocal power of Ian Gillian from the original album, the flow of this album resonates cleaner and has more emotive content. I have loved this version since its release in the 70's.

  2. I ordered 2 of the CD's, one for myself and one for a very close friend. They both arrived in exactly condition and in an extremely timely manner. Although this is an older released musical piece, it brought back fond memories and allowed me to recapture moments from my past that were very uplifting.

  3. I always thought the concept album had a garage-bandy sound to it, and a thin production sound typical of the era (like "Tommy"). The Broadway album is comparatively fuller (still 70's sounding) but makes much better use of the orchestra, and better mixed as well. The string swells sweep you away, the cymbal crashes give you chills. Jeff Fenholt couldn't front Deep Purple, but he makes an excellent Jesus, earnest and conflicted. Murray Head holds nothing to the passion and soul of the great Ben Vereen. Yvonne Elliman is slightly more mature in the role of Mary Magdalene on Broadway and clearly more comfortable, and Barry Dennen seethes and conflagrates as Pilate much more than on the concept album. Overall, more emotion comes through, which figures since they actually performed it in front of live audiences. In a way, the Broadway album is the definitive version because it is from the first performing cast of JCS, not a crew hired for a one-off.
It's a shame the full song list isn't included on the Broadway album, but the highlights really are the best parts, and the song "Could We Start Again", not on the concept album, is Webber & Rice at the top of their show-ballad game.

  4. I love this musical, and any soundtrack from it is amazing. however, if you're having difficulty picking which version, i would suggest the movie soundtrack before this one. Judus is no where near as good, which was a dissapointment. however, the songs were still very good. What else can Andrew LLoyd Webber be?

  5. THIS CD IS THE BEST JCSS RECORDINGS...IT JUST DOSN'T HAVE THE WHOLE "THIS JESUS MUST DIE" SONG. IT DOSN'T PLAY THE WHOLE THING! THE COVER DOSN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE. [I'M STILL WANDERING WHAT IT IS] BEN VEREEN IS A GREAT JUDAS...PROBOBLY THE BEST ONE. BARY DENEN IS NOT GOOD IN THIS PRODUCTION. HE SOUNDED LIKE HE WAS GONNA THROW UP OR HAD A DRY TROUGHT. HE IS BETTER IN THE ORGINAL CONCEPT CD. THE MAJOR PROBLEM IN THIS CD IS IT WASN'T COMPLETE. REALLY, I HAVN'T SEEN A COMPLETE JCSS CD THAT I DON'T HAVE IN 5 MONTHS! THEY ONLY GIVE OUT THE HIGHLIGHTS CDS. WHO WOULD WANT TO LISTEN TO 13 OK SONGS IN A GREAT MUSICAL? NO ONE. THE PICTURES IN THE CD LOOKED CRAZY. I NEVER WANT TO SEE THE PICTURE OF THAT KING HEROD AGAIN. YOU SHOULD BUY THIS CD IF REALLY LIKE THE MUSICAL.

5 comments about Singin' in the Rain (1952 Film Soundtrack).

  1. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN WAS ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT IN ALL RESPECTS---IT HAD
EVERYTHING...AND DONALD OCONNOR ACTUALLY STOLD THE SHOW---BUT WHO WILL
EVER FORGET GENE KELLY DOING THE TITLE SONG IN THE RAIN!!!!

  2. As much as people complain about the lack of tapping in this soundtrack, I must say I prefer it with just the music and singing. After all, the whole idea of a soundtrack is to have the music from the film, not the dammed sound effects! Having a soundtrack with sound effects is like taking the sound direct from the movie, when you have that going on...it makes more sense to jolly well watch the moive! This is differnt however, there really is no sound effects, just the singing and music.

If I'm honest, hearing Debbie singing "would you?" (which is a bonus track on this CD) made me think, she was better than the woman that overdubbed her voice, this album certainly gives you the chance to hear stuff that wasn't in the movie.

Deffinatly something I recommend to anyone who wants the origional soundtrack from such an iconic film, the real deal. It's cracking without all that tapping! :P (yes, I am English)

  3. This was a wonderful movie and the soundtrack is just as enjoyable. Listening to it brought back memories of specific scenes. I highly recommend it.

  4. This is a superb soundtrack; I agree with comments thankful for the lack of too much tap dancing (on cd?!?) or dialogs...
I am a big fan of this film (it's hard not to be) and when I want the whole experience, I sit and watch it.
Naturally, if you have no experience with this cinematic Donen/Kelly masterpiece, the cd would seem a bit bland regardless of some really fine tunes. In that case, go get your self the film itself! And then you might want to purchase this soundtrack as well.

  5. Many of the cuts were very short but the disc covers the entire movie.

5 comments about Harpo in Hi Fi/Harpo at Work.

  1. It's very typical, and typically close-minded, of those born around 1965 or after to belittle the orchestra instead of recognizing its importance as a welcome force in pre-Beatles pop music. This is a fantastic double-CD, with interesting small band jazz accompaniment on some tracks and beautiful full orchestra on others, perfectly complementing Harpo's gentle harp playing. Great to go to sleep by.

  2. Think HARP music. Think More HARP music. If you love harpo/or the music he made in his movies this is for you...

  3. I actually own not only the CD but the 2 LPs that the tracks came from. The CD is a bit of a dissapointment in that three tracks from "Harpo At Work" are from mono masters (the liner notes specify that acceptable stereo masters were not available... what humbug). Since I own both the mono and stereo LP versions of "Harpo At Work" I did a little comparison... the producers could have used a good LP rip if they had gotten off of their lazy butts. Also, there is absolutely NO player personnel listed for "Harpo At Work" tracks, and very rudimentary info for "HArpo in Hi-fi". The liner notes do go into detail about his life, just wish that they would have had some more info on who was playing... sigh...

Musically it is great stuff, the tracks show just how GOOD Harpo was on the instrument, and how GOOD Bill was in the arranging department. The transfers are OK, nothing special, but not clankers, either. I just wish the producers would have expended the extra effort to give us the three full stereo tracks from the second LP.

  4. This CD combines two Harpo Marx albums from 1957/58 on one CD. Harpo, of course, was the most famous harpist of all time. Some of the tracks here have a somewhat jazzy feel to them, but some of them are a little too close to "easy listening". Harpo fans should enjoy it, though.

  5. Don't hesitate to buy this wonderful CD. When Harpo plays the harp it is magical. The songs on this CD are incredibly beautiful. You'll want to listen to it time and time again. I was so moved by Harpo's playing that I have started to learn how to play the harp myself. LOL!!! (If you want to hear my progress so far, go to www.harponit.com)

5 comments about As Time Goes By: The Movie Album.

  1. His voice is as gorgeous as always, but the tempo drags on nearly every song. Some things should just be left to Sinatra ...

  2. It is close between "Up on the Roof" and this thing. "The Movie Album "just plain stinks. I sense Neil had this one forced on him by the record company.

  3. I'm not going to critique the music, that's totally subjective. I happen to like about 8 of the songs a lot and the others are so-so. Just my opinion, others will differ. In general, I like Neil Diamond's music a lot. Prospective buyers should know, however, that the price of this 33 minutes-per-CD set is a rip-off. That's right, there's only a total of 66 minutes of music, and therefore, no excuse to put the music on 2 CDs and charge a double-CD price. Columbia Records was obviously out to fool the brick-and-mortar buyer who hadn't read online reviews.

  4. Neil Diamond's medley of past and present movie adagios in this great album are indeed very pleasant listening. He still has the voice to delight those of us who enjoy the music and lyrics of songs from great lyricists, past and present, although I thought that at times Neil held the pitch of the note a little too long and as a result the notes became a little flat. Nevertheless, he still sings with passion and feeling and I have always regarded him as a great songwriter and singer. He has definitely earned his place in the annals of the all-time great singer/songwriters.

  5. "I remember THAT song!" How often have I said that! Neil Diamond has always been a favorite of mine, and when my favorite singer performs my favorite songs...what could be better? This collection is the BEST for travel!

5 comments about Fosse (1999 Original Broadway Cast).

  1. This jazz dance music keeps my spirits up and my toes tapping. I was delighted to introduce my 15 year old granddaughter to this Fosse music. She loves it.

  2. I loved this recording. It's one of the finest I've heard in a long time for a B'way show. The Crunchy Granola Suite is electrifying. This show reminded me of DANCING which I saw some time ago in New York.

  3. The Tony-winning production of "Fosse" was an excellent revue of Mr. Fosse's contributions to Broadway, but doesn't exactly translate as well to cd. Still, a nice "highlights" buy!

    Best tracks include:

Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries
    Big Spender
    Rich Man's Frug
    Hot Honey Rag
    Sing! Sing! Sing!

The voices and orchestrations are good, but I would suggest purchasing the original cast albums instead.

Try "Chicago" or "Sweet Charity" for the best examples.

  4. On stage FOSSE was overlong but at least enjoyable to see some of his best dance sequences recreated. The show was a fine showcase for some of Broadway's best dancers, and some of the numbers generated real excitement, BUT....we learned nothing about the man the show supposedly celebrates. From all reports he was complex, dark, and driven. The current revival of CHICAGO is more a tribute to Fosse, than this bloated dance cycle. That it won the 1999 Tony award just reflects on how weak the 1998/99 season really was.

Translating a dance show to CD is almost pointless. If any of the numbers had been sung with a strong individule style they might have made an aural impact. None of them do. The songs on this CD are all better heard in their cast or soundtrack albums. No one track here is a true standout.

The star of the recording is the orchstra ...which is sensational in re-creating musical styles from cheesy 1960s TV shows to the big Brassy sound of Broadway to the jazzy sounds of Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing" which closes the album. (This song should now be barred from being used in any more shows for 10 years having been featured in SWING!; CONTACT and FOSSE!!!)

The Cd booklet has some color pictures, but no notes on the how or why of the show itself.

Those in search of FOSSE are better served by the VHS/DVD release even though it too pales when compared to the show as seen live on stage.
