5 comments about The Slipper and the Rose (1976 Film Soundtrack).
- Finally the soundtrack to that wonderful movie! I first saw that movie when I was in elementary school and loved it ever since. I have seen this movie so many times now and I can watch it over and over again... and now listen to the songs over and over again... The music is amazing (by the Sherman Brothers, who also wrote "Mary Poppins" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"). The story is so detailed and realistic for those times and full of humor and subtle irony. It was produced with a love to detail. I can unconditionally recommend that soundtrack. I have seen most Cinderella movies (old and new, musical and fairy tale, ballet versions etc.) and this is my most favorite! Now I can sing along when I drive, work, take a shower, ...
- Absolutely beautiful!!!! Its wonderful to just sit back and listen to the lyrics and appreciate them ... If you love this film as much as I do, every song carries many memories ... Its romantic and just lots of fun!!!!
- I love this soundtrack! If you are a fan of the movie, you will really enjoy this. There is only one disappointing thing about this soundtrack.
While all of the songs with words are there, most of the background music is missing. There is the overture and the waltz theme, but no other background music. I was particularly disappointed in the absence of the music from the wedding.
Despite this, I am very glad I have purchased this CD and high recommend it.
- I'm so happy this soundtrack is no longer out of print. The movie is one of my favorite musicals and all the music from the movie is wonderful!
- This has to be one of my favorite musicals. And that's saying something. I remember watching the movie with my mom when I was little. When I purchased and played the cd, that all came back. Mom and I busted out singing, "Protocoligorically correct", practically cracking up through half of it; and enjoying the romantic theme "He/she danced w/me"!
The sound recording was well pitched, loud enough to hear, and there wasn't anything fuzzy. This I was very grateful for. I look forward to one day playing it for my daughter so she'll enjoy it to.

5 comments about The Who's Tommy: Original Cast Recording (1992 Broadway Revival).
- I have been the proud owner of this dual CD since 1994, when my first car had only a tape deck and I had to use one of those goofy converters with my diskman to listen to CDs. I think I wore the poor thing out. I also own the original rock opera written and performed by The Who, but it doesn't get the playtime that the Cast Album does. Why not? Because the women in this recording are phenomenal! I love speeding down the road screaming/singing "Acid Queen".
I will have to be honest though... as a play, Tommy is a bit lacking. You have to admit that the plot is a bit strange and often the character's actions leave the viewer scratching their head. I watched the touring cast in the late 90's and still have my piece of the mirror that fell from the ceiling.
In all honesty though, the reason to buy this CD is entirely for the first disk. The first disk is brilliant, engaging, and won't leave your head for days. The second CD was always just "eh" in my mind. Granted "Smash the Mirror" was brilliant, but I tend not to put in a CD for a single song, so the second CD has only been played a handful of times. The first CD is worn beyond recognition.
This cast recording is not for everyone though, I have some friends who are musical theater purists, they turn up their nose at this recording almost as if it were blasphemy (electric guitars in the theater!) I also have several friends who are classic rock purists, they snarl at the site of the CD and declare that it should never have been made that I should burn it and replace it with my copy of The Who doing the songs. Sorry to both of you, but I love it and will continue listening to the first CD off of this album until it finally dies on me.
- This version is so good. i loved the original album, But never liked the movie. i saw this version in new york and loved it. i download this strait to my ipod. the amazon mp3 service is pretty good and it was a quick download. disregard to the bad reviews they probably have never seen the show on Broadway
- I was beginning to worry that I was getting to harsh in my reviews because I was saying the same things over and over, but Tommy broke me out of that. This is a great CD, musical lover or not. The music is fantastic. As in all operas (in any genre) themes repeat and Tommy has some repetitions, but not to many, and not annoyingly. The story is told out great through this CD. Although reading the synopsis helps visualize more, the lyrics and music really let the listener grip it all. A word on the lyrics, They aren't the greatest words ever written, but they're pretty good. And the singers on this CD give it so much life its unbelievable. I strongly suggest this CD to new musical fans, as well as collectors, it will please most audiences. Favorite Song: "I'm Free/Pinball Wizard (Reprise)"
- Save your money and get the original WHO version of Townshend's masterpiece. I am a BIG fan of Pete Townshend but this CD is almost laughable: a pit band that tries to sound rock "heavy"; the overly slick production; every spect of the story is literally explained with lots of very unclever "hit the audience over the head" messages. Did the director really think us rock/theatre fans would like this? There is no subtext and everything is nauseatingly "on-the-nose" (e.g. the re-written "let's all get along" family ending almost makes me giggle, if it's not causing my stomache to turn.)
- I LOVE this album!! I haven't listened to it in ages but upon listening to it again it brings the show back into my head. I can picture what takes place during each scene by listening to the music again. I saw the show when it toured through about 12 years ago. I LOVED the show and must've seen it close to 20x before it left the L.A. area. This show just rocks and was such a fun show to see too!! If you saw this show either on Broadway or touring this is a must have in your collection. I highly recommend it if you're a Who fan too!

5 comments about Grateful: The Songs of John Bucchino.
- Each song possesses its own star in the sky. And just look at the performers to see the vast array of talent beautifully performing the pieces. This is one of the most amazing albums I have ever heard. I listen to a lot of musical theatre, and this ranks at the top. Thanks for transporting me into your world. Yes, I am "truly grateful."
- I have owned this CD for several years now and most songs on it, do not get tiring, and are now old friends. First, John Bucchino ought to be producing "cabaret" albums like this monthly. The wealth of wonderful talent in that world need to be heard. I read other reviews, and some spoke of sentimentality etc. I applaud his honesty and his ease in writing songs that tell stories and show LOVE in many of its forms, and nuances.
Specifically: Adam Guettel's rendition of Unexpressed is one of the most heart breaking songs I've ever heard. Adam sings it with such sweetness and "hope", and you want to climb into the song and just hold onto him. Judy Collins: does her voice ever age? And the song leaves such a mental impression. I agree with another viewer that Brian Green should have been given another tune, maybe a ballad, but, he always sounds great. Christine Chenowith fills your heart with those words. I DISAGREE with a critic who said that Restaurant by the Sea doesn't work. Anne Hampton's voice and interpretation brings you to a specific place and there's no way you don't see her and the person she sings about. Okay, this is silly. THIS IS AN ALBUM EVERYONE SHOULD OWN. Sure, there might be singers someone doesn't like, but...it is an album of songs that spin tales, and are songs that you really have to listen to the words, and FEEL the depth of what is going on behind the actual music.
Bravo to John Bucchino!!!!
- Am I the only one who thinks the rather pretty "Grateful" bears more than a passing resemblance to "Happy Birthday" from "I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking it On The Road"?
I agree that Minelli's track was painful. As was LuPone's. Several of the others are lovely, though.
- This is one of the most appealing "cabaret" recordings in a long time. With only a few exceptions, there was some masterful work involved in pairing each of these singers with their assigned songs; the effect is often that the song fits the singer like a glove. In particular, "Sweet Dreams" is sung by Judy Collins -- and sounds like she might have written it herself!
It seems to be a testament to Mr. Bucchino's talent -- and regard amongst his peers -- that several fine composers sing his songs here. Adam Guettel, Jimmy Webb, and Ann Hampton Callaway are delightful additions, and imbue their selections with grace and feeling. All of the other singers -- except two -- likewise bring great passion and artistry to their tracks. And though I've never been a great fan of Michael Feinstein, his rendition of the title song is extraordinary.
Another appealing aspect is that Mr. Bucchino accompanies all the singers. There are no cheesy or unskilled arrangements like other recent theatre compilations; it's just a grand piano playing accompaniments that feature infectious rhythms, bittersweet phrases, and some very rich harmonic tapestries. I can't think of a better pianist for these songs than the composer himself -- since he obviously knows the songs, he makes the piano the perfect complementary partner for the singers, in that the accompaniment never overpowers the vocals nor abandons them. This man is a true artistic colleague, rather than a talented egomaniac. And because the accompaniments are so rich and full, one never gets the feeling that something is missing [e.g. a full orchestra]. I thought that Stephen Sondheim was destined to be the last composer who wrote accompaniments that are vital to the evocation of feeling; thankfully, Mr. Bucchino proves me wrong.
My favorites of the songs are those that are, for lack of a better term, character pieces. Although many other songwriters are skilled at creating quasi one-act plays in their songs, Mr. Bucchino goes the extra distance on a couple of these songs by intentionally not making everything crystal clear. For example, at the end of "Sweet Dreams" we simply leave the company of the two characters -- Mr. Bucchino "leaves 'em wanting more" in that we want to know what happens next. Very skillful and original.
And now the bad news, in five words: Liza Minnelli and Billy Stritch. Just awful. What vocal prowess Miss Minnelli once possessed is gone, and her bouncy style has always had limited appeal on audio recordings and is, frankly, greatly diminished here. As for Mr. Stritch, who has been Miss Minnelli's artistic partner for years, his only talent thus far has been as a jazz pianist; he is a droning vocalist, and since he is not playing piano on this recording it is a mystery as to why he is even involved. [I cannot imagine anyone ever going to a gig in which Mr. Stritch was going to be solely a vocalist; the poor oaf has neither basic vocal talent nor even a sense of vocal styling to at least "sell" a song.] The two of them sort of try to infuse some feeling of fun and frolic at the beginning of this jaunty song, but it sounds forced and unbelievable and is soon abandon in favor of the "I am such a smooth and cosmopolitan artiste" attitude that Miss Minnelli has, in the past, employed much more successfully. Just a ghastly, ghastly performance to endure more than once -- well, actually three times: Once in shock, once to confirm that one's ears were actually working correctly, and once more to laugh uproariously at the sheer inanity of it. Thereafter, one resolutely skips past this track, wishing that one could permanently erase tracks on commercial CDs.
But the other tracks far outshine that one dud track. If you like cabaret material -- or even just good songwriting -- this recording won't disappoint you. And the title song alone is worth the purchase price -- a passionate and glorious melodic line, paired with a sincere lyric that is devoid of any semblance of triteness or cliché. Very, very touching.
- After reading ALL of the reviews here, I've decided to add my two cents. First, give credit where credit is due. John Bucchino writes wonderful songs. You may not like them all - but there are different styles of music represented on this CD, and something should peak your interest.
That being said, most of the singers are truly downright awful. I don't care how much clout they have in the broadway/cabaret world - if they don't record well, they shouldn't have been given the job. The downfall to using such below average recordings is that unless you've heard a better version of some of these songs, you will probably skip over them and never give them a second chance. (especially daisy prince trying to sing "It Feels Like Home" with the wrong rhythms and notes... try listening to Nancy LaMott). I actually re-burned this cd to completely omit the Liza Minnelli song. Awful isn't even a strong enough word. I also purchased the sheet music book and have learned some of the songs without having to listen to these interpretations.
Not that everthing was negative. "Unexpressed" sung by Adam Guettel is haunting, and I had it on repeat for a couple days. I had to listen to Art Garfunkel sing "If I Ever Say I'm Over You" a couple times, but it has grown on me and become a favorite. Believe it or not, the song "Not a Cloud in the Sky" sung by John himself has grown on me as well. Granted, he is not a singer (at least i hope he doesn't bill himself as one...) but keep an open mind when listening to it, and you'll "get" his interpretation. pretty neat. I also liked David Campbell's track "Better Than I" after listening to it a couple times.
Ultimately, Ann Hampton Callaway (who sounds wonderful, but "In a Restaurant by the Sea" is just not a favorite song of mine)Adam Guettel, Brian Lane Green (who should have been given a better track to sing) and Kristin Chenoweth are,in my opinion, the best voices on this cd at first listen and their talents are underused on this cd...and where is Sally Mayes??? Don't give up on this songwriter, just keep your fingers crossed that next time he puts out a recording, better recording artists will be used.

5 comments about And So Much More.
- I've seen Linda Eder in concert twice now and she's incredible. She has tremendous breath control and her tone and pitch are always dead on. This CD captures some of her best work. I love it!
- First heard Linda on Jekly and Hide and was totally impressed. Since this time have purchased two other albums and by far, this is the best overall. Every song is a winner!!!
- Well, I must say that this cd is aptly titled! "And So Much More" certainly describes my feeling when puchasing this disc and giving it a first listen. I had no idea what to expect but was so thrilled upon hearing Ms. Eder's voice that I became an instant fan. There's so much MORE than what I had expected!
There is so much that is right about this cd that the only liability, being soon-to-be husband Frank Wildhorn's heavy handed production and at times "intrusive" orchestration, seem like minor flaws. Linda Eder's voice is a wonderful vehicle for the song selection, which is wisely chosen and never over-bearing (are you listening Barbra?) . Highlight's include "I Don't Remember", "Is This Anyway To Fall In Love?", "I'll Forget You" and a great duet with Michael Feinstein "Someone". Carefully crafted and impeccably sung and you have the makings of a strong yet subtle piece of music. How often are we fortunate to find that combination these days? Perhaps the greatest pleasure is simply that Linda is a vocalist in the traditional sense of the word....meaning singing 'standards' and show tunes in a straight-forward fashion, with honesty and emotion. What a find! This truly is music for "adults"...and by that I simply mean music where melody, lyrics and perfect "pop" sensibilities come to together to mesh wonderfully. And to give credit where credit is truly due...the decision to use Jack Murphy as a lyricist was a stroke of genius! Sophisticated, clever yet words that tug at your heart-strings will never go out of fashion (sorry Mr. Porter!). Obviously I think this is almost a perfect package and while I've yet to hear Ms. Eder do anything quite as strong recently, although she's comes close, she receives kudo's for putting out an remarkable disc. So much more....indeed!!
- Linda Eder went abruptly from that leather swathed "rocker" on her debut album to a soft, ballad performing muse with a remarkably Streisand-like bob, and let her audience see her other side. This album is mostly soft, 50's-like ballads, and I will certainly not say that on this album she didn't try to mimic somewhat the styles of other great performers. But she is her own person with her own voice. Her coy "I Don't Remember" is followed by the lovely title number. Then she really gets going. The campy, fast-paced "Till You Come Back to Me" is pure Eder, no copying or mimicing there, but then we come to "The Man That Got Away," a well known Judy Garland classic. But Eder has the talent to make this song her own. She phrases things differently ("The-e-ere is nothing. . . sadder than") and her characteristic "cry" between notes help to personalize this song to Eder. "When I Look in Your Eyes" is beautiful song with a haunting melody, followed by the standard "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin. "In the Cool, Dark Night," a relaxing ballad, is next, and then comes "Someone," a duet with Michael Feinstein. One of the gems on this album is "Is This Anyway to Fall in Love" peformed in a way that only Linda Eder could. But one of my very favorites on the album is "I'll Forget You." Here is a song in which Eder truly makes you feel what she feels; it will truly move you. "Next Time I Love is another wonderful, but sad song. "All the Way," another standard is performed flawlessly, and the albums concludes on a spine-tingling note with "Bridge Over Troubled Water." If Simon and Garfunkel really knew how to sing their own song they would have done it like Linda Eder did. But then, no can sing a song like Linda Eder.
- When Brent and I combined our CD collection, I was fortunate to benefit by this fabulous collection of songs by Linda Eder (our friends often ask, "Is that Barbra Streisand?"). Linda could easily be the next Barbra! This collection of songs offers some up-tempo beats and some romantic pieces too! Her voice is crisp on the title track "And So Much More". Our personal favorites include: "The Man That Got Away" "Someone" (with Michael Feinstein) and "Is This Anyway To Fall In Love". Her rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is remarkable and makes this collection complete! You will not be disappointed.

- In response to the previous review.... this IS karaoke! the CD+G format is made exclusively for cd+g compatible players the will show the lyrics on the tv... the lyrics will not work on a dvd player unless it also supports cd+g format.... I am a professional karaoke host and I use this company's products all the time they are usually very professional sounding renditions of the songs. i recommend it highly.
- This does not work in a dvd player and no words are included to follow. I do not consider this product karaoke. Don't waste your money.

5 comments about Caroline, Or Change (2004 Original Broadway Cast).
- I saw this production in LA with the original Broadway cast, and while I thought it was emotional and VERY well acted, it was also musically forgettable. I mean, 'songs that sound pretty powerful while you hear them that you couldn't sing a note from ten seconds later' forgettable. Yes, there are some interesting songs like the afore mentioned "Salty Teardrops", "Roosevelt Petrucius Coleslaw", and "Lot's Wife", but it still doesn't stay with you. The EMOTION does, but alas, the melodies do not. And I've sang in an award-winning gospel group for years, but ANY of those melodies stay with you and these don't. Not too mention that when you hoped that it might finally be over, you realized it was only the intermission! I have not experienced anything like THAT in a musical since Anthony Newley's "Chaplin", and that's NOT a good sign! A first act should not feel that long....
Also, the reviewer above was only half right: No, "Avenue Q" did not deserve Best Musical, but "Wicked" most certainly DID! Over-hyped or not, it still was head and shoulders above anything else that year. I would've enjoyed THIS show better as a straight drama, but as a Musical I'm afraid it misses the mark.
- I never had a chance to see the original production on Broadway and after listening to this CD that upsets me. Caroline, or Change has a great score and a good story. The actors are excellent and pure. Tonya Pinkins is amazing in the role of Caroline. If this show came out after shows such as "Wicked" and "Avenue Q" I think it would have had a better chance to be noticed. With shows like "Grey Gardens" and "Spring Awakening" now out on Broadway I believe that there is now an audience for smaller, original, quality shows like "Caroline, Or Change" (I am not saying that "Avenue Q" is not quality or original but "Avenue Q" and "Wicked" flooded the news especially when it came to the Tony's). I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes a high quality show.
- I traveled from DC to NY twice to see this production in 2004. Trust me...What you hear on this CD is what I saw and heard in the Theatre!! I agree with the previous reviewers in that this musical is years ahead of it's time. Years from now it will be mentioned along with Sondheim works and Dreamgirls as musicals that were on the cutting edge of musical theatre!!!
- I haven't seen the production but as much of the story, including dialogue, is sung, and the full score is presented on the CD, this is the next best thing to being there. I DO NOT agree that the show is ahead of its time. It continues the wonderful tradition I was afraid would die with Sondheim. A tradition of the intellectual musical. It has tremendous depth - emotional, intellectual, musical. If you haven't seen the show I'd advise that you read the lyrics as you listen, otherwise its somewhat difficult to follow, but BUY IT. Like Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Company and Sunday in the Park with George you'll hear something new every time you listen.
- i LOVE this show. Tonya Pinkins is phenomenal as Caroline, and Anika Noni Rose is likewise as wonderful as Emmie. Its a shame that Caroline, or Change came out when it did - it was up with some hard competition that year, what with Wicked coming out as well. I think had Tonya not been up against the amazing, not to mention my IDOL Idina Menzel, she would have taken home the Tony, hands down. I think the show was also ahead of its time, meaning Broadway probably wasn't ready then, or, in my opinion, now for a show of this magnitude, but man! what an amazing show indeed. definitely in my top favorite shows. I would recommend this show to just about anyone.

3 comments about The Ultimate Collection.
- This Gershwin collection is divided into two CDs; the first has many of his more popular pieces from Broadway productions, and the second has a selection of his symphonic works. Some of the songs on the first CD are performed by singers such as Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bing Crosby, and sound absolutely spectacular. Unfortunately, the compilers opted for some lesser know and less talented names for several of the tracks, rendering about a quarter of the CD mediocre. The one pick that really didn't fit in, however, was Audrey Hepburn's rendition of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" Audrey Hepburn, despite all her wonderful acting talent, simply cannot sing, and listening to the entire song even once is a difficult thing to force yourself to do. In my humble opinion, however, listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong singing "Summertime" completely makes up for it.
The performances on the second CD are wonderful across the bar, and a delight to listen to. My own personal gripe with this CD, however, is that, instead of selecting three or four compositions and including full performances of all of them, the producers have used a number of medleys and suites in order to include a larger representation of Gershwin's work. You may like this, and as I said, all the performances are top notch, but I found myself wishing that entire works had been used, instead of just pieces of them. There are a few which are presented in the entirety: the ubiquitous Rhapsody in Blue (an extremely good recording of it), Lullaby, and his three preludes for the piano, but these are the only ones. I, sadly, do not have the discriminating ear of a musician, but there were certainly no flagrantly obvious problems with the sound on either of the discs; this album seems extremely well done from a technical perspective. I would recommend it to someone looking for a Gershwin album with a little of everything, but for someone who already has or is looking to start a collection of his work, this CD will add very little of note.
- This is clearly one of the best collections of Gershwin's ever-lasting musical masterpieces. Rhapsody in Blue is a favorite piece, and the cd contains many songs sung by some of the greatest singers, including Ella Fitzgerald. If you've been searching for the perfect gershwin cd, consider purchasing this particular one.
- This collections includes seventeen Gershwin songs sung by superb artists over several decades and 11 wonderful "best of" instrumentals. Singing artist incude original recordings by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, and others. Instrumentals include Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris. Many of the instrumentals were recorded by Arther Fiedler and the Boston Pops. There is 140 minutes of music on two CD's

5 comments about Dreamgirls (1982 Original Broadway Cast).
- First of all this is not what i wanted. I thought I was purchasing the original broadway play. I realized my mistake almost immediately and emailed them to cancel my order. Their response was to ship it anyway i might like it. I didn't want it i wanted the play. Their customer service is the worse and i will never purchase anything with them again! they only got 1 star because they wouldn't let me send it without clicking on it. they deserve none.
- If any of you have seen the recent 2006 movie version of "Dreamgirls" with Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, and loved the music, then this is a must that you buy this orignial soundtrack of the 1982 Broadway Hit "Dreamgirls" in which the movie was made. Michael Bennett's extraordinary genius is captured in every song, making the Broadway Hit come alive in your head.
- Beautiful music, excelent singers specially Jennifer Holiday, I saw the musical in Broadway in 1983 (I believe)and my husband and my self enjoy it very much.
High class service from Amazon, thank you
- i found this cd not a collection of songs but a direct recordind of the broadway show but only the numbers . i know it is a soundtrack but i still feel the song tracks in there etirety would have been better listening
- I needed to hear the original since I bought the screen version. Jennifer Holiday is still the best.

5 comments about Carol Channing & Pearl Bailey On Broadway.
- I bought this for my dad (87) and we watched it together recently when I was visiting him in Florida. He and my mom had seen Pearl Bailey in "Hello Dolly" on Broadway years ago and, after the show, Pearl announced that Carol Channing was in the audience. To the delight of the audience, Pearl brought Carol up on stage to do a few numbers together. The CD brought back fond memories for my dad, since we lost my mom five years ago. We both thoroughly enjoyed watching these two amazingly talented, energetic women perform their solos and duets. Entertaining, enchanting, and worth every penny!
- There is nothing better than two great ladies of the stage enjoying each others company in this classic television special. Carol Channing is a riot and Pearl Bailey smolders with her top-notch delivery and improvisations. Also, this show is filled with rare glimpses of these great ladies nigtclub routines. You will see Pearl Bailey singing Bacharach tunes and Carol's irrepressible Cecilia Sisson. This is a must for any musical theater fan and a glimpse of a golden age in performing not to be seen again.
- If you enjoy performances of great legends of the stage, then more than likely you will enjoy "Carol Channing & Pearl Bailey On Broadway." Although the audio at times is a little muddy, watching these two dynamic women perform is worth the purchase of this DVD. Channing is hilarious as she does a great imitation of Marlene Dietrich. Bailey delivers a song, making it her own. She is definetly a talent that was taken from us too soon. The two women play off of each other like the best and dearest old friends. It is someting to watch and enjoy time and again.
- Carol Channing seems prepared, but Pearl Bailey does not. Pearl tries to improvise, but it doesn't appear as if she is in control of her performance most of the time. Pearl's lack of preparation defintely took away from her performance - but ya gotta love her anyway. Carol is very interesting to watch, so funny and at the top of her game. You can see why she is a Broadway legend. The production is overall weak and that appears to have hurt the strength of the performances somewhat. Nevertheless, you can't get stuff like this anywhere else. It's worth every knickel. Buy it.
- Take a look at Mary Martin and Noel Coward in Together with Music (I have an old video of that); listen to Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall (seemingly unavailable on video); then watch this. Seemingly barely rehearsed, this is a bad TV special thrown together hastily to promote the two greatest Dollies while they were performing in the role. Yes, these are two great stars. Yes, that occasionally comes through here, particularly when they are working alone.
