5 comments about Calamity Jane (1953 Film) / Pajama Game (1957 Film) [2 on 1].
- Two fine scores and good idea of pairing them...but both have been given better sounding transfers on other Cds.
The Columbia Records 10-inch Lp of CALAMITY JANE contained 8 tracks (all of them are on this CD.) 4 of the tracks ("The Deadwood Stage", "I Can Do Without You", "Higher Than a Hawk" and "Secret Love") are taken from the film soundtrack. The other 4 songs are studio recordings by Doris Day. This was probably done to keep album costs down, since she was already under contract to Columbia and they could avoid paying the re-use fees for the other singers. Example: "'Tis Harry I'm Plannin' to Marry" is not sung in the film by Doris Day - It is sung by Allyn McLearie (ane never sung complete.) "The Black Hills of Dakota" is sung in the film as a quartet, and "A Woman's Touch" is a duet. The versions recorded here are solos. Ths was common with many of the other Columbia so-called "soundtrack" albums including RED GARTERS, LULLABY OF BROADWAY and I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS. This Cd transfer has some problems... there is strange crosstalk in "I can Do Without You" that sounds like another tape being rewound backwards at fast speed. And there is a skip (!) in Howard Keel's "Higher Than a Hawk. THE PAJAMA GAME, on the other hand, was a 12-inch Lp with all the tracks taken right from the soundtrack. When this collection was first released on Lp in the late 1970s, three songs from THE PAJAMA GAME were dropped to fit the program on one side. Those three tracks are added here as "bonus tracks" but not in their proper place. ("Hey There" comes after "I'll Never be Jealous Again:; "Steam Heat" after "There Once Was a Man" and "7 1/2 Cents" after "Hernando's Hidaway.") THE PAJAMA GAME has been given an even better CD transfer on the Collectables label.
- Columbia issued a 33 1/3 rpm in 1953, called "Doris Day & Howard Keel in Calamity Jane" which contains 8 tracks. The cover claims that these tracks are from the original movie soundtrack of the Warner Brothers production. Howard Keel was under contract with MGM, and the cover notes that his participation in the album is "courtesy of MGM".
My sister has the original album. If you check under the Doris Day CDs there's one with the original album cover for Calamity Jane combined with "I'll See You in My Dreams".

- Pay no attantion to the other reviews this is the best Doris day cd, it has all the songs from Doris Day's film Calamity Jane and The Pajama Game, two fine filsm with lot's of great singing from Doris Day. I'm 16 years old and can appreciate this, so I'm sure you will too...
- Hi all: I was around when this movie first came out. I don't believe there ever was an actual "soundtrack" recording of this film released on record. I believe it had something to do with the label Doris was contracted to at the time. The only record I have, and I collected soundtracks faithfully back then, was pretty much like that one combining Calamity with Pajama Game. Correct me if I am wrong.

- I like evita.I hate how highlights albums have unimportant songs rather than the main ones.I'm sure other people agree. This has the main songs done well! Also it has parts of songs in the middle of musical parts.I think it's cool.My dad bought it and I listen to it more than the others. Not to say it dosen't haveit's faults. The singer for another suitcase in another hall is well bad.It should include oh what a circus and rainbow high. Also
it dosen't include the complete song forms but the main ones.Che sounds like Antonio Banderes. It's overall good and worth it.

5 comments about Classic Disney, Vol. 3.
- This CD is a wonderful collection of some 25(!) of the most beloved Disney hits. Indeed, the songs on this CD are all songs from the great Disney movies that you remember from your childhood. There's "You've Got A Friend In Me" from Toy Story, "Oo-De-Lally" from Robin Hood, and "I Wan'na Be Like You" from The Jungle Book (I love that Louis Prima!).What's also wonderful is that the hits are from the great Disney movies right up to the present, with such songs as "Jack's Lament" from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
My whole family loves these songs, and often sings along with them. My personal favorite is The Silly Song from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - I love that scene!
Buy this CD you won't regret it!
- This third CD of Disney music is a good mixture of the old with the new. Track 1: "Colors of the Wind" from POCAHONTAS is one of the best songs composed to date for a motion picture. Track 18: "Bella Notte" from LADY AND THE TRAMP brings back many memories as does Track 21: "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" from television show and movies. Going back even further is Track 24: "Little April Shower" from BAMBI, which is an interesting composition representing nature's beauty, fury and return to tranquility. Track 6: "Les Poissons" is a great number from THE LITTLE MERMAID that is well composed musically but also is used to advance the story of the film. This is yet another great CD in this series.
- Disney has once again put some of its most liked songs into a single album. The songs on this CD are some of my favorite songs and I'd recomend the CD for anyone that has kids or just likes the songs.
- Burton movies are great. Burton movies with Elfman's music... well, they're out of this world. Nightmare before Christmas is my favorite movie of all times, and someone who hasn't seen it, doesn't have to make those comments. It's a movie full of great feelings; plus the music is great. Someone who hasn't seen the movie wouldn't understand "Jack's Lament"... I invite Caroline to see it and THEN critize it. BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIMES.
- These Disney CD's are so great. People of all ages can enjoy them. My favorite is volume 2. My 3 year old LOVES it but so does my 22 year old friend!

- Like many others, I first happened across David Campbell on the "Hey Mr. Producer" CD/DVD and was very impressed with his singing and acting. I'll admit I was a little concerned when I first started playing this CD - the first song just didn't seem to meet the standard I was expecting. However, by the time he started singing the poignant "Error Flynn", he had won me over. He also takes an interesting twist on Sondheim's Broadway Baby - normally sung by women - he carries it off. I'll purchase other CDs by Mr. Campbell and would love to see him on stage.
- The first of David Campbell's CD's is a brilliant start and will make you want to run out and by his second CD, "Taking the Wheel".
Campbell is a Cabaret singer the likes of Michael Feinstein and Brian Lane Green. Not only is his choice of music and his phrasing and interpretation impeccable, but his voice is beautiful on top. If you have ever had the pleasure of experiencing him live (in a Cabaret, or a musical), then you know that he also has an amazing presence is.
- I had expected a lot before I listened to this CD for the first time, because it was the guy that impressed me so much in the video:"HEY MR PRODUCER!", singing "Martin Guerre" and "The Last Night of the World". But his singing in this CD is somehow unsatisfactory. His voice is, yes, beautiful, he has (probably) perfect technique of singing, but his singing in this CD lacks some 'spirit'. I purchased, at the same time, Sean McDermott's "My Broadway" which REALLY 'touched' me. The difference probably comes from the fact that Sean McDermott actually acted and sang most of the numbers on his stage. So, I hope David Campbell will also appear on the stages in NY, London or anywhere (Tokyo, too) and release his future CDs from his own numbers. I believe he can, because he is so talented and still young. But how could he perform so perfectly in "HEY MR PRODUCER!", though he had never acted in "Martin Guerre" nor "Miss Saigon" ?
- Wish I knew what the rest of the reviewers hear or feel. He is not bad, but not worth raving about. Hard for me to find outstanding male singers to compare with the talented females (Linda Eder, Liz Callaway, Stacy Sullivan, Lisa Richard etc etc). Where are the Robert Goulets, Harve Presnells of today. It may get played on a semi annual basis.
- I purchased this CD about a year ago, and love it. My favorite songs are "Help Is On The Way" and the medley of "Out Of My Dreams/I Have Dreamed". I think his vocal presentation and interpretation is gorgeous! He has the same vocal presence as another one of my favorite male Pop/Cabaret vocalists, Michael Poss. In fact, David Campbell's CD listed above, and Michael Poss'new CD release 'Silver Screen Serenades', contain one of my favorite songs, "On Such A Night As This". It's always fascinating to hear the same song arranged, interpreted and presented by vocalists in a fresh, new way. Michael Poss' version is Big Band style, yet David's is done slower and more introspective. Both are excellent recordings. I think David has the same vocal quality as Broadway great, Michael Crawford. I hope he will be performing in Los Angeles in the near future. I'll also be looking for his name in a Broadway show. I know it'll be coming, soon!

- I am just rating this as I start to rate the products because I know it's helpful.
Anyway, I bought this CD for my husband (he was my boyfriend at the time I bought this CD) because he told me he lost his copy of this "tape" and he really loves listening to this record during Christmas. I hesitated as I haven't seen the tape before so I am not sure if it's the right one. He opened the box and his face brighten up. I knew that it was a perfect gift that we will be using together in our future...and it was. :)

1 comments about Blues in the Night (1987 London Cast).
- I enjoyed this CD, but I purchased it for learning the songs for a community theatre production. I especially like the track "Rough and Ready Man." If you are into musical theatre or just into bluesy music, this is a nice CD to add to your collection.

5 comments about Fiddler On The Roof (Original London Cast).
- I got the CD immidiatly with excellent condition. I have really been enjoying it.(^^)
- this is a really good cd to model one's performance on if performing in a production of the hit musical. all the main songs are on this CD except "the rumor" and "chava ballet(little bird)." topol is amazing as the charismatic tevye. his voice and ununciations are a lot better than zero mostelle's. a while ago, my high school did fiddler on the roof, and at first the guy playing tevye modeled his voice after zero mostelle and it sounded like crap, but once he got this version, his performance was really good. plus, this musical is really good. the music may take a little while to get used to, but it is awesome after a few weeks of steady listening.
- How can you not like fiddler on the roof, its a classic, its amazing, as are the songs and topol himself. You can not get a version of fiddler on the roof, that doesn't have topol in it, i mean he is fiddler on the roof, without him you've been coned, its not fiddler..... This CD is the best version i've ever heard, and believe me i hear it a lot.
- This CD took me a while to get used to, but when I did, I liked it quite a lot. The people on this recording have voices that appeal to only certain types of music lovers. They are not sickeningly sweet sounding, nor are they your normal Broadway belters. I'd say that if you like the quality of singers like Pattie LuPone, then you could appreciate this album. Other than that, I think the cast works well together. The songs are very catchy, although it does slow down a bit after the first act. Nevertheless, I reccomend this cast above others because, to me, it just sounds more realistic and emotional.
- However, the recording is really sad. For anyone trying to find a version to listen to for the first time, don't get this one! It'll turn you off real fast. Topol (Tevye) is alright but it's hard to tell because of the old recording. The cast as a whole sounds rather inexperienced, like they haven't worked together long. Let's just say that I've listened to it once and the only track that I listen to anymore is the "Bottle Dance" (fully orchestral). Don't be discouraged, though. It's great stuff if you can find the right album. I haven't listened to any other recordings--only live productions, so I couldn't recommend any others for you. If you have any suggestions, mail me.
