5 comments about Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition.

  1. I had long ignored Judy Garland because I unjustly assumed she only did campy show tunes. Big mistake. Yes, she does do some obligatory Broadway hits (e.g. "That's Entertainment"); but her performance here is much more versatile than I expected. Most of my musical collection favors singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sara Vaughan, and Nina Simone, etc. but Garland is a comfortable fit.

Best example: on disk 2 she sings "Stormy Weather" - a song made big by the likes of Ethel Waters and Lena Horne - both phenomenal singers themselves - but their versions are easily dwarfed by Garland's performance of Mort Lindsey's* arrangement of this classic blues standard. Garland's voice is a torrent of emotion that transforms the song from one of common heartache to one of profound and inescapable despair. (*Lindsey and his orchestra are impeccable and deserve a lot of credit for letting Garland shine at her brightest and making this show so unforgettable.)

Going back to Disk 1, there is another song - one I had never heard before, which is surprising because it is a masterpiece that can not be ignored: "Do it Again". It is one of the sexiest songs ever written and Garland sings it with irresistible seduction - it's a sort of refined and romantic alternative to Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On."

I played "Stormy Weather" and "Do It Again" over and over for weeks - those two songs alone are worth the price of this CD set. So, if you like jazz and big bands - folks like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett - don't hesitate to add this to your collection. It really is a brilliant performance you will enjoy again and again.

  2. If you're a JUDY fan (and who isn't?) this is the CD you MUST have. Her voice is at it's best on every song. Fabulous back up band. You will listen to this for years to come.

  3. Bought this for a gift to my parents for their 62nd wedding anniversary. They love it!

  4. This is a must for all fans of Judy Garland, it really captures what she was all about.

  5. Don't get me wrong. I love the pure sound of the CD and it thrills me every time I listen to this album through headphones. The added Judy chatter is wonderful and funny. But being a live album, I always wonder why the sounds of the audience are pushed back so far in remastered CD'S?
On the 2 record set, the audience cheers and applause are right up there, and gives the performance an even more exciting feel, especially on That's Entertainment, San Francisco, Swanee, and when Judy says: "I'll sing 'em all and we'll stay all night!" The cheers and roars are incredible! Isn't this what a "live" recording is supposed to be about? The same thing was done to Shirley Bassey's Carnegie Hall album. Why tamper with a masterpiece? Let the audience get involved and stop pushing them back!

5 comments about Godspell: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

  1. Music was uplifting! A lot of good memories. Kids, young adults, should be exposed to this music!!

  2. It had been several years since I'd even thought about Godspell, which was popular in my early adult life. Then, after hearing one of its songs on the car radio, I wanted to have a copy to listen to when I liked. Knew the place tp get it was Amazon and had it in less than a week. The music is great, but now I have to get a video of it. It needs that colorful and joyful viewing as well as listening!

  3. i really enjoyed this movie.
Saw the play and was hooked on it.
People need to be reminded how we got here on this earth
People also need to learn more about God and life in general.
Life would be better in they had him in their life.
Looking up to him is the best thing anyone could ever do for themselves.
Godspell makes you feel good about life after seeing it.
The songs in Godspell are also uplifting and make you happy.

  4. Great movie of it's time. Great soundtrack for it's generation. Highly recommend this version of the music above all else. The best version of "Beautiful City"

  5. Finally got destination the parcell . don't know what happens but many thanks to follow the track ! many thanks . I've placed this in December and I've got it in March ! All is fine

5 comments about Cinderella.

  1. I brought this for my daughters 2nd birthday as she loves the movie and trying for her not to watch so much t.v
She has her own c.d player in her room [no t.v]
We listen it it everyday we sing and dance in her room.
All the songs are included as they run in the movie including bonus track that we also listen to. which included tracks that never made it into the movie that we also love
I think music is so wonderful and why not a soundtrack I grow up with soundtracks of movies on records my daughters speech is amazing from learning the words to the songs

  2. My daughter loves the Cinderella movie and this CD is perfect. It has all the main songs and instumental music from the movie. There are also some additional songs not from the movie on the second half of the CD. Whenever we listen to this CD it's almost like watching the movie. Anyone who has kids that love the movie will also love this.

  3. Can anyone tell me if there are lyrics to the song "So This is Love" on this CD. I am looking for a CD that has the lyrics as well as the music to this song.

  4. I knew what i wanted and Amazon had it. It lived up to my expectations. The quality was excellent and the service timley.

  5. What a delight to finally hear the rich background music and much of the dialogue from this Disney masterpiece on one compact disk! Long awaited to be released on DVD from the Disney vaults, this entertaining CD companion piece to the new DVD has been certainly worth the wait. Ilene Woods, as Cinderella, has one of the warmest, most expressive voices you'll ever want to hear! All the voices are well cast, and the incidental music is evocative of a more innocent time and place. In addition, some deleted tunes, a Jim Brickman song, and an updated version of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" are included, stretching the audience appeal of this disk. Listeners of all ages will truly believe that if you wish and try hard enough, your heart's dream can come true!

5 comments about Fifty Years: The Artistry Of Tony Bennett (5CD).

  1. This collection of Tony's classics are well recorded and give much to his singing voice, style and overall talent.

"He is truly one of the greats who dosen't get the publicity he truly deserves from the media"

  2. Aside from Frank Sinata, no greater singer has carved a niche in the collective soul of American popular music than Tony Bennett. For over 50 years, the man who entered this world as Anthony Benedetto has given us some of the best and most beloved recordings of timeless songs that to this day help define our deepest emotions and most important moments in our lives.

This 5 disc collection is a magnificent introduction into the world of Tony Bennett, containing some of the most beautifully interpretted renditions of our most cherished standards by great writers such as The Gershwins, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and other legends of the craft.

Discs 1 and 2 chronicle Bennett's rise to stardom in the early 1950s' to mid 1960s'. Tony proved to be a force of nature right from his first single release, "The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams," which still sounds as fresh and soulful as it did 54 years ago. Throughout the rest of the 1950s', Tony scored a string of hit singles that went on to become defining numbers in the Great American Songbook, including "Because Of You," (a wedding perennial), "Cold, Cold Heart" (a country hit for Hank Williams that Tony helped introduce to the pop world), "Blue Velvey," the timeless "Rags To Riches," "Sing You Sinners" and many other classic hits that he still does to this day.

Also from this classic era are lesser known but eqqually excellent albums such as "While The Music Plays On," the splendid "Ca, C'est Amour," the gorgeous "Lazy Sunday," "I Get A Kick Out Of You," (perhaps the only version that rivals Sinatra's defintive 1953 rendition), a magnificent "September Song" and a swingin' "Lullabye Of Broadway" with Count Basie.

The 1960s' continued to bare more fruit for Tony, including classics such as "The Best Is Yet To Come," "Tender The Night," "Once Upon A Time," the stinging "I Wanna Be Around," and the lush "The Good Life." It was during this period of productivty he cut what to me, are his two best songs.

The first is "I Left My Heart San Francisco," his 1962 hit and (deservedly) his most popular song, a melancholy slice of vintage Americana sung so passionately by Tony against a gloriously understated and utterly breathtaking Grammy winning arrangement by Marty Manning.

The other would be "When Joanna Loved Me," which ranks alongside Sinatra's "I've Got You Under My Skin" and Darin's "Mack The Knife" as one of the most perfect recordiings in American history, a song that represents pure human emotion at its most raw and honest. Tony's singing on this song is sincere and heartbreaking, and remain so to this day.

Discs 3 and 4 mark a period of transition and eventually resurrection for Tony. By the mid 1960s', Tony's appeal began to dwindle, as hit singles had begun to dry up. He still cut quite a few certified classics (among them "Smile," "The Very Thought Of You," "For Once In My Life," and his personal favorite recrding, "I Do Not Know A Day I Did Not Love You"), but by the early 1970s', the music world wasn't as kind to Tony commercially. Artistically, however, Tony was still capable of churning out some excellent music. His collaboration with Bill Evans yielded such gems as "My Foolish Heart" and "But Beautiful," and he turned in a magnificent performance of the "Cabaret" classic "Maybe This Time."

By 1986, Tony had mounted a very successful comeback with "The Art Of Excellence," which yielded his beautiful performance of "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" and the playful and seductive "What Are You Afraid Of." His newfound sreak of good luck continuted with his Irving Berlin tribute, which yielded the beautiful "I Got Lost In Her Arms" and a haunting a capella take on "When I Lost You." Tony also scored a latter day classic with the beautiful "When Do The Bells Ring For Me."

Disc 5 chronicles Tony's 1990s' revival, when he helped introduce the wonderfuls tandrards of the past to a new generation and connected with young listeners and contemporary entertainers. Tony added yet another classic to his reusme with the Fred Astaire tribute "Steppin' Out With My Baby," and teamed with contemporary artists such as Diana Krall ("Alright, O.K., You Win"), B.B. King ("Let The Good Times Roll"), Ray Charles (the amazin' "Evenin'"), and two wonderful duets with k.d. lang ("La Vie En Rose" and "What A Wonderful World"). This disc is an excellent overview of his later years up to today, and Tony is still very much alive, well and performing.

This boxed set contains a superb booklet filled with great essays and rare photographs. The boxed set is affordable and the sound quality is superb. Do yourself a favor and purchase this magnificent collection as soon as possible.

  3. Fifty Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett
My mother in law LOVED this gift. Had it shipped to her location for Christmas with no problem, and in perfect condition!

  4. This boxset is a great start for someone just discovering or long-time fan who wants a great overview of Tony's career on CD, what I love about this set is that features songs that showcase Tony as the Jazz singer, it does feature alot of pop standards but Tony swings on those too! and the ballads are just beautiful!
and the sound quality of this boxset is awesome!

  5. Tony Bennett has always moved me with His voice. from the time I was a child through now His Voice has always been on point to me."I Left my Heart in San Francisco" is still One of My all time Favorite Songs.I dig how He uses His Vocal Tone on Tracks&Keeps things cool.TB has always kept it cool on whatever Project he was working on.

5 comments about Paint Your Wagon (1969 Film).

  1. Love this CD ! Will bring the Movie to me while doing other things ! For the ones that say "it is not Lee Marvin singing"....HE IS ! Your "ear" has to be very bad not to recognize his voice ! Great songs...And Clint sings too ! Don't care what they say but he does sing good ! And for the ones that say "his weak voice..." , that weak voice is what makes him special. Favorites: "Gold Fever" ( can play it forever) , "Wandering Star" ( beautiful ) and "The best things of Life" ( cheerful and fun ! )
I can play this soundtrack over and over and cheers me up so much even if I'm upset: total fix ! I even bought the music lyrics for piano and I'm playing them !!!! Fun !

    Angela Lauridsen

  2. I realy loved this album however I think most reviewers have over looked the lovely ballad "A Million Miles Away Behind the Door" supposedly sung by Jean Seberg but oviously dubbed. None the less it is a very lovely, lovely song by Alan Jay Lerner and Andre Previn and I can listen to it over and over and over.

  3. Wow - worth every penny. If you like the movie, then you can not go wrong with this CD. It's that simple.

  4. This CD is the soundtrack of the movie. My favorites are Lee Marvin singing "Wonderin' Star" and the male chorus of "Maria". If you liked the movie, you'll like this.

  5. If you like Musicals this one is pretty special as both Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin sing in this one. To me this is reason enough to want to own this CD.

5 comments about Putting It Together: A Musical Review.

  1. "Putting It Together" is a gem for any fan of musical theater (especially Sondheim fans). The songs are amazing, and all are beautifully delivered; this is a thoroughly enjoyable DVD. Plus, it has Captain Jack Harkness of 'Torchwood' - what more could you ask for? ;-)

  2. This is a musical delight I can't stop watching and singing along to! The cast is outstanding. Bronson Pinchot and Carol Burnett will have you rolling with laughter (and so will John Barrowman if you watch the outtake!). Witty, well choreographed, and with an intricately-designed set, Putting It Together is one surprise after another. John Barrowman delights with flashy moves and soulful singing, as does Ruthie Henshall, who has shenanigans of her own up her sleeve. Last but not least, George Hearn is spot-on as the aging husband who looks upon his life with some regret over the past, zeal for the present, and hope for the future.

    It's a party, and we're all invited!

  3. John Barrowman and Carol Burnett are in great form! the entertaining is great. John Barrowman is great multi-talented entertainer and needs to be reconised more here in the US.

  4. Very entertaining. Bronson Pinchot was very funny. I'm partial to John Barrowman, so of course I found him to be wonderful. What a voice! I love it when he belts out those notes as clear as a bell. Even with the rest of the cast on stage, he still manages to take command with his sheer presence.

One small, suggestive scene, otherwise good for all family ages.

  5. I found this DVD to be wonderful from start to finish. To be honest, I purchased it because I am a great fan of John Barrowman, but found I enjoyed all the members of this cast. Each performer has their own separate strengths which make this very watchable. I only wish there were additional special features, but the one blooper that is included is a riot! Enjoy!

  1. Actually I didn't get this item, becuse the owner said to me, 'That item has problem so I'll refund.' He(She) did. Moreover comunication didn't have problem.(it did immdeatry.) So I also saticefay.
If I want to buy something, I'll use Amazon again.
I think your system is loyal, so I become trust your system.
    Thanks everything.

  2. I have this album, its one of my favorites, I played it many times since I got it, one of my friends gave it to me because she had a sort out and didn't want it.
This soundtrack, also Rhythm of the pridelands, The Lion King musical album all of them are fantastic, I never get fed up with them, i'm sure I will never give them away to anyone, but I would highly recommend to anybody who likes Disney to give them a go and buy an album so they can hear for themselves how lovely the songs are!
If music like this didn't touch my heart in any way or lift my spirit, I would not buy it or recommend it.
The songs from The Lion King are my favourite because I can relate to the majority of the story.
Like Simba I lost my Dad when I was young back in 1994, Simba blamed himself after his Dad died, so did I for a while. Simba obviously did not kill his father, it was his uncle. I wasn't to blame either for my Dad's death, he smoked all his life, gave up when he was ill, but it was too late by then. He developed lung cancer and in 1994 he passed away, I believe he's in heaven and I will see him again.
The next year after he died The Lion King was released at the cinema.
It was the first film i'd ever seen at the cinema, and for personal reasons its the best Disney film.
Simba faced his past when he was an adult, he went back to reclaim his place in the circle of life by challenging his nasty uncle.
I didn't do this but I did face my past by saying goodbye, I took flowers to the cemetery with my sister, I also took a helium balloon with me.
I wrote a message on paper and tied it to the string and said a few words then let it go.
My sister and me didn't attend our Dads funeral our mum didn't think it a good idea, she thought it would be too upsetting for us.
About a month before I was 13 in 1996, I began to suffer with anxiety/depression, I suffered with it on and off for roughly 7 or 8 years. I didn't know until that time had passed that my Dads death was the route cause of it all, I dont' blame my mum atall for not allowing me to go to the funeral, at the time she thought it was the best decision.
I realize this is a long post but if I made it too short you wouldn't get the whole picture.
I have had alot of help and support during the dark times in my life that anxiety/depression had caused. Im so much better than I was, I still experience some anxiety today however it is not as debilitating as it used to be.
All the help ive had from friends and counsellors I believe all came from God. Ultimately if it was not for his help and healing, I may not be typing this post today. I'm sure God is real and I know he is, some past experiences iv'e had definitely confirm that to me, I would not want to have a life without God in it!!!!!!!!!
If anyone who reads this can relate to The Lion King or my story, then I strongly suggest listening to the wonderful music, see if it touches your heart like the way it has mine!

  3. Hello everyone. I am an avid collector of film scores, especially rare and out of print promotional items. With over 200 scores in my collection I know the subject well. Among them is a copy of The Lion King: The COMPLETE Score by academy award winner Hans Zimmer. The score features mainly Hans' instrumental music from the film, but there are some tracks that include "Circle of Life", "Can you Feel the Love Tonight", and "Be Prepared". Overall, Mr. Zimmer's work on this album is exceptional and he definitely earned the oscar for his work here. If you can manage to locate a copy I highly recommend picking it up. Not only will you get terrific music but you can also say "I own the super-rare complete score"! Here is a track listing:

    1. Circle of Life
    2. Life Isn't Fair, is it?
    3. The Once and Future King
    4. Plotting
    5. The Elephant Graveyard
    6. King of the Past
    7. Hyenas
    8. Stampede
    9. To Die For
    10. What Have You Done?/Run Away
    11. Alternate 1
    12. A New Era/Bowling for Buzzards
    13. Simba Awakens
    14. Under the Stars/Simba Alive
    15. Hunting/Pinned Again/Reunion
    16. Alternate 2
    17. An Argument/You're Mufasa's Boy
    18. This is my Home
    19. The Return/Battle of Pride Rock
    20. Alternate 3
    21. Alternate 4

  4. I'm not exactly the world's biggest "Lion King" fan, but I do like the soundtrack. The songs are very good, especially "Circle of Life" and Elton John's version of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". And I love the musical scores. Probably my most favorite scores are "To Die For" (even though it's a tragic scene in the movie, the music itself gives me goosebumps, and I mean that in a good way), "This Land", and "King of Pride Rock". This kind of music is definitely award-winning material.

  5. I love this CD, Hans Zimmer is a brilliantly talented person, and and all the original music on this CD are amazing, very few soundtracks today can compete....
    However....
SOMEONE saw fit to add a song...both to the original movie, and now the only soundtrack a person can buy. :S (Stupid 'Morning Report')
    Why? Its like raping talent...
If Disney is going to lock up our childhood movies for years at a time, can't they at least give them back to us uncorupted?

5 comments about A Chorus Line (1975 Original Broadway Cast).

  1. "Chorus Line" has to be one of the greatest of Broadway Musicals. It is particularly apropos to people who either are in show business or are well-familiar with the ups and downs of that craft. This recording just magnifies this!

  2. We have the album version--the purchase of the CD was overdue. This play was my first Broadway show and I'll never forget the experience. Listening to this CD makes you feel like you are in the theatre again and the songs are classics that will stand the test of time. "At the Ballet" never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Forget the movie soundtrack version--no comparison to the original Broadway cast. This is a "must have" addition to your collection.

  3. I live in NYC and recently saw A Chorus Line on Broadway. I remember it being my favorite show when i first saw it in 1977. While not as great as the original, but still wonderful, I came home realizing that I had to have the CD from the original production. This is a great CD, very well priced. Buy it. And sing along to the fabulous score.

  4. i ordered the soundtrack from the movie NOT the original cast recording. When I opened it and put it in the cd player I was sorely dissappointed upon listening to it.

  5. The CD was unplayable and we received no response to our emails to the dealer.

5 comments about The Christmas Music of Johnny Mathis: A Personal Collection.

  1. This album really does have the best mix of christmas favorites by Johnny Mathis. Besides his covers of "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year", and "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas", the album also contains the song "A Marshmallow World". A very good album!

  2. Johnny Mathis is a wonderful singer. His voice is so smooth. I wanted something with the song "We Need A Little Christmas." I got that and a whole lot more. I loved listening to the cd during the holidays. It was a great addition to my Christmas collection.

  3. His soft, smooth voice perfectly reflects the gentle joyful subject of these songs. It's a lovely background for any Christmas gathering-- dinner, present exchange, reflection on the "Reason for the Season".

  4. Johnny is a great christmas music singer so this cd is one of my favorates

  5. This CD has lots of favorite Christmas carols and is great to listen to while decorating or wrapping gifts.

5 comments about My Fair Lady (1964 Film Soundtrack).

  1. I bought this soundtrack for my mom for her birthday-she loved it! Shipping was fine, price was decent, everything was in good shape...
It's good to see timeless songs surviving through the digital age.

  2. If you like 1960s musicals, this CD is fits the bill. My Fair Lady is a classic. Good quality recording from the film soundtrack.

  3. This CD of the songs from the 1964 film My Fair Lady really does a great job of giving you the flavor of this spectacular musical. The sound quality is superb; and the artwork is well done.

The overture is as beautiful as it was the very first time I ever heard it while watching this film. The lush musical arrangement works very well to mark the beginning of this classic and timeless motion picture. The strings sound great. "Why can't The English?" is performed mainly by Rex Harrison; he can't really sing but the way he essentially speaks his lines to this tune really makes this number hum along well! Rex Harrison is able to use his voice to boom out the lyrics to anyone even remotely within earshot--and this impresses me very much.

"Wouldn't It Be Loverly" features the Marni Nixon singing in place of Audrey Hepburn (Hepburn's singing voice was dubbed). Marni sings this with great sensitively and she pegs down that accent like the pro she always was! "With A Little Bit Of Luck" has the great Stanley Holloway performing to perfection; and there's a great number in "The Rain In Spain" when Eliza Doolittle finally manages to get the "proper" accent down pat.

"I Could Have Danced All Night" features Marni Nixon at her very best; the operatic qualities of her voice really shine through on this number! Bill Shirley also does a great job on "On The Street Where You Live." Bill could really belt this out! "Show Me" also showcases Marni Nixon's great talents as a vocalist; her voice sounds clear as a bell and she never misses a note!

"A Hymn To Him" is a very funny number performed primarily by the great Rex Harrison; he delivers this with panache, heart and soul. Again, his essentially speaking his lines never seems to interfere with his exceptional ability to deliver a song flawlessly. It's amazing. "Without You" again has Marni Nixon dubbing the voice of Audrey Hepburn for this great number from the ending portion of this motion picture; and as usual Marni delivers this with all the heart and soul of a greatly talented chanteuse.

"I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" is really the last musical number just before the ending credits; and Rex Harrison simply never sounded better! He aces this easily and it makes a fine ending musical song for this motion picture soundtrack album. Of course, we also get the music from the ending credits.

My Fair Lady is one of the best musicals ever made. This soundtrack album of songs and music from the motion picture is a must have for fans of the great musicals.

  4. I'm really just appalled that Audrey Hepburn is credited on this soundtrack, as she never sang for the movie and Julie Andrews was the original Eliza, so there's no way in hell that Audrey Hepburn qualifies for the "original cast" of any music recording of this show. Otherwise it's a lovely recording and brings back old memories.

  5. Some movie-musicals have it pretty easy. if filmakers can get the original broadway cast, or at least most of it, and include the majority, if not all of the songs. then they're pretty much set. for proof of this, look no further than 1964's adaptation of My Fair Lady.

    SONGS
all of the songs from the stage show are here, which gives this soundtrack a wonderfully full feeling. the orchestra feels rich and lush on all the tracks, plus some purely instrumental tracks that really add life and fill out the soundtrack nicely. because most of the broadway cast is here, the songs all sound great too.

    SONGS 4 out of 5

    PERFORMERS
rex harrison, stanley holloway, and wilfred hyde-white all reprise their broadway roles and make their songs just as witty and clever as ever. they all sound just as great and add a wonderful broadway-feel to the album. bill shirley dubbs the part of freddy here, and since i fealt that his songs were fairly bland his presence isn't particularly noticable. the real difference is in the form of audrey hepburn vs julie andrews.

actually its more marni nixon (who dubbed for hepburn) vs julie andrews. marni nixon is a great singer, but the only problem here is that she should have been allowed to just sing the part. songs like "wouldn't it be loverly" and "just you wait" make it painfully obveous that two women are performing the part. songs like "i could've danced all night", "show me", and "without you" are great just because nixon is allowed to just sing the damn role.

    PERFORMERS 4 out of 5

fans of musicals and this show will still appreciate this soundtrack, since even at its weakest, this soundtrack is still impressive. however, light fans will want to pass this over for the original broadway cast album, since evn if marni nixon had been allowed to perform the whole soundtrack, julie andrews is still more impressive.
