5 comments about The Live Anthology (4 CD).
- Not as good as this could have been. I should have known because of the "Live" in the title.
- This is a beautifully packaged set. I chose the Lp's because visually the thing is siply stunning. A whole lot has been written about the consistency of the sound and it is true: tehre are recordings from the early 80's when the band was in its prime that really hold up to the rest. The approach taken was to assemble a set with some of the best songs Petty has produced over the last 4 decades. It is clear that it can never contain all the songs everyone would want. however since it starts with my favourite "Nightwatcher", I personanly cannot complain. Then on the same disc there is also "I need to know". Both these are rfom what I consider Petty's best period. I had personally lost Petty from view I would say in the 90's because I found he had lost some of the bite that his first 5 records contained. This live set serves as a reappraisal even for me because the consistency of the songs is incredible. I used to think he had kind of lost it after Free Fallin' especially when he started doing the Travelling Wiburys. Anyway here we get to hear what a spectacular band he and the Heartbreakers were and are. The sound is also incredible if zou consider the age of some of the recordings. There is also a very well done booklet that gives you some personal glimpses into the babd's career as well as some informatio on the restoring process involved. Even if it is not cheap it is a wonderful box set.
- For me this set is a great disappointment. T.P.s attempt at blues type ring shouts and lousy Gregorian chanting makes me rather listen to coyotes sing. The selection of songs leaves one disappointed. I see this as a sign that T.P. is finally reaching a point in his career that is waning. Repops like these are a sure sign that his best days and songs are behind him.
Highway Companion and that Mudcrutch cd were OK but nothing to write home about.
- Good old fashion straight ahead US rock and roll from one of the best. It's been a long time coming, but this live anthology from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has been worth the wait, you will love it. All the favorites are here, plus some surprises and unexpected covers.
Interestingly, Tom has chosen not to go with a linear presentation from the early days through to now, but has mixed it up and without any heavy-handed themes per CD. Each CD is just a good mix of songs that go together and bring the atmosphere and warmth of a live set to your living roon, or wherever you listen to this.
It is also great value, not that that is the most improtant thing, in fact it's probably the least important.
This is just a great collection of Tom Petty songs, put it on and you won't be able to stop your spirits rising, nor will you be able to stop yourself singing along (beware if playing it on the Metro).
Highly recommended.
- Im a big fan so sad to say I wasn't real thrilled with the box set of the studio stuff put out a while ago. Boring out takes and classics that have been played to death didn't ring my bell. THIS box set however, ROCKS.. Beautifully done with enough twists and energy to give even the old war horses new life. These guys DO NOT need the magic of the studio to sound great. Here, in all their glory, journeymen musicians entertain and blow the minds of those who were lucky enough to catch these tunes live. Tom Petty and the boys have to be some the best rockers in the business. It would be nice to have a few more live albums like this one of these days. Waiting impatiently for the next studio album as well!

- uneven concert from 2 beautiful musicians, great to complete the Eric Clapton's collection but not to be over played on the CD player. everybody has good days and bad days, it was just not the magical night.
- Its like a trip back in time. the two founders of the supergroup Blind Faith reunite and treat us to music from that era and some from their other groups and solo outings. a good time is had by all.
- Love it! I loved Steve when I was younger and still do. I only wish he'd done more vocals on this cd, but It's a great listen.
- While there's no denying the musicality of the Clapton/Winwood CD, it wasn't even close to the best I've heard from either. More that it was less than the sum of it's parts.
- I was blown away by the concert on DVD and as a result had to purchase the 2 CD Live Set. I have seen both artists individually live many times but never together. An unforgettable show not to be missed! The BluRay DVD sound quality is excellent and was almost as good as actually being there for the show. A must purchase for any Clapton, Winwood, Cream or Traffic fans.

5 comments about Performing This Week...Live At Ronnie Scotts.
- Listen to me...yeah you at the keyboard...Everyone who has posted a review for this DVD are telling the truth at how great it is and these folks are far more eloquent than I could ever be, so here is what I will say. You've probably got ONE CLICK enabled...you're in front of your computer right now (probably at work no doubt) and unless you've been in a coma for 40 years you know who Jeff Beck is so do yourself a favor buy Live at Ronnie Scott's RIGHT NOW! If you do, you will be thrilled and amazed beyond belief and if you don't...well... what's her/his name two cubicles over will NEVER go out with you because you are a musical knucklehead! So impress her /him with your good taste and your ears and eyes with Jeff and his band's astonishing performance.
- I have been a fan of Jeff's since as long as I can remember. I was gigging as an electric guitarist for many years, and as time went on, the number of top electric guitarists I really enjoyed began to dwindle, until finally Beck was left standing almost alone at the pinnacle. He keeps reinventing himself, and that quality is rare, especially since many find it necessary to keep doing their safe expected material in order to keep the fans that allow them to make a living. I suppose that being a custom car builder has freed him from some of those pressures.
He manages to cover the entire spectrum of expression, from a quietly poignant melody all the way to a thunderous roar. After having heard his recordings for many years, I finally was lucky enough to catch him live here in the states one night. I consider it to be one of the greatest concerts of my entire life, and I've heard some good ones. He was on fire all night.
Much later, I remember seeing his Crossroads show performance on TV. It was very good, no surprise, but with the enormous crowd, he actually seemed a tiny bit nervous. And I remember seeing what seemed to be a very drunk Bill Murray introducing him to the audience, which was quite amusing. I was glad to have seen Jeff in a more relaxed setting.
I have many recordings of him, and have followed his every style change. It would be easy to become jaded. But as I listened to this recording, even though the material was all familiar, I was somehow re-stunned, and it brought back memories of that special show. After awhile, the image that came to mind was of him walking along carrying a huge bag of diamonds, just tossing handfuls of them to anyone that he saw. Glittering diamonds of creativity and sound.
- You know that invigorating sense of cleansing & renewal you get after seeing a real great musical show? It's an indescribable feeling of elation and I hope you as a music fan reach this place as often as you can because it's a rarified treat for your soul. If you're in dire need of this sensation; of truly being impressed, cleansed & renewed, this Jeff Beck show will take you there, I promise...I have been an ardent fan of Jazz-Rock-Blues-Fusion since I was 13 years old and currently 44 with never a dull moment spent musically. What is witnessed herein may be the high water mark of all my dedicated years of fanship. The DVD is what you want to see; plain & simple. I hear the CD short changes some fun tunes that complete the esoteric musical journey. The DVD's the biggest bang for your buck and you can fold your friends and family into the mix with repeated viewing; It will likely be required. This is quite an eyebrow raising experience and it's not that it's just Jeff Beck, it's other worldly. That's all I can eek out at this moment in time because I'm still in absolute awe of what I just saw. Performing This Week-Live at Ronnie Scotts is suddenly that important of a scene. Be there, get it and marvel in it's impactful purity.
- This doesn't have some of the vocals by guest artists as does the DVD. Pity. Blanket by Imogen Heep is the one of the reasons I purchased it.
- Jeff beck is a musician...who happens to play guitar. He can make lyrical poetic passages that mean something...and also blistering fusion runs into the twilight zone. He is one of the very few who can use the whammy bar in a musical way. I'v always enjoyed his playing best when he has a musically compatible keyboardest, such as Jan Hammer or Max Middleton. His keyboardest on this CD, Jason Rebello is now on this shortlist. This CD is highly recommend.

5 comments about The Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 2: Let It Rock.
- More Great Jerry with other Great Players, more memories of the best years of my life, living in the Bay Area and working part time for BGP.
- With so much posthumously released product---the Dead's catalogue, the Garcia/Grisman collaborations, remastered solo Garcia, and the JGB---it's hard to imagine that there's much left in the vaults to warrant euphoria from Jerry's devotees. But there is!
The newest release, Let It Rock, finds a skeletal version of the JGB. And this foursome, with session man extraordinaire, Nicky Hopkins, playing some gorgeous piano throughout---and even a few of his own compositions---plays with such synergy and vitality that it's remarkable they only lasted a mere handful of months. The playing is focused, bright, and inspired. The rhythm section is rock solid and Garcia's guitar tone has never sounded better: at times, it somewhat suggests the thick slabs of blues Roy Buchanan was known for when he was running circles around his peers in the early 70's.
Every tune is a winner here---from the lazy groove of "Let it Rock" to the bluesy riffing of "That's What Love Will Make You Do" to the delicious funk of "I'm a Road Runner" to the gentler tones of "I'll Take A Melody" and "Sugaree." Simply put: this is eclectic, melodic, controlled, and passionate guitar playing at its best.
- I own pretty much everything released that is JGB and this is easily one of my favorites. The sound quality of this performance, unlike a lot of JGB and Grateful Dead releases, is a-one; sounds like it was recorded in 2010. Why the same equipment wasn't used to record all JGB and Dead performances is an unfortunate mystery to me.
As for the music itself, there isn't a throw-away in the bunch; all musicians absolutely shine throughout. Tutt and Kahn provide a solid base for Hopkin's bar room piano and Jerry's unbelievable guitar work. I've listened to "It's Too Late" and "Road Runner" too many times to count and I can and never will tire of hearing them or any of the songs on this recording. As near to perfection as one could hope for.
- So, Is it more than a coincidence that the graphics of this cover closely resemble the album graphics of the Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, and Stephen Stills historic Super Session jam recorded in Al's apartment in NYC? Anybody have any inside word on this? Rhino? Nice company to keep as both sets are 5 stars!
- Garcia did many projects outside of the Dead, I saw The JGB many times at The Tower Theater here in Philly in the 70s. This is one of his first, but shortlived groups, I had never heard anything by them. This 2 CD set is refreshing with Ron Tutt and John Kahn who played with him and Merle Saunders at this same Venue.
Jerry is relaxed and getting some great tones out of the White Custom guitar. Nicky Hopkins is a master of the piano, his style is delightful and he is a different take than Keith Godchaux. The music flows or chugs along, starting out with "Let It Rock" which is a great jam, They do songs from both of their catalogs plus others and covers. The recording is a delight to listen to , very clean and great tones. A must have for a Jerry Fan.

- CD was received a few days after order. Factory sealed, but case was cracked (not enough bubble wrap for shipment through U.S. mail). CD plays OK.
- The disc arrived quickly in good condition. The case is ok except the center fingers are broken off on half of them so it doesn't hold the disc securely. But it works good enough. Music plays fine.
- AWESOME CD! ERIC ONCE AGAIN PROVES HIS GENIUS FOR THE GUITAR. HIS WAY OF PLAYING THE BLUES IS STERLING. A GREAT LISTEN!!!!
- This is like record but way smaller and some guy sings on it. Not sure who it is though
- I saw this on the shelf at Wal-Mart, and I got excited. I had heard that this was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. And not only that, but it was an MTV special, and MTV is always right. Could this guy be more awesome than Herman Li?
So I played this, and once it was over, I immediately broke the CD in two. Eric Clapton's moniker, Slowhand, is fitting, as he plays slowly, with no shreds or epic guitar solos. I'd like to see him try to play Through the Fire and Flames or have riffs as hard as Nickelback's. How could this guy be the best? In one of the songs, he starts being emo about his dead son, who jumped out of a window, probably after listening to his father's music. LOL.
For good guitar music, I recommend Dragonforce, Korn, Limp Bizkit, or Nickelback.

5 comments about Live from Austin Texas (CD/DVD COMBO).
- The first time I heard the Drive-By Truckers was a few years ago on one of those streaming internet radio sites. I was not impressed. I like country, and I like rock, but they were louder and more bombastic than I generally like my music. However, when they showed up on Austin City Limits a little while ago, I decided to give them another try, and they converted me. What converted me was not front-man Patterson Hood, but Mike Cooley. More mellow than Hood, Cooley presented himself as a subtle guitarist who favors tone and texture over flash, and his singing style has a brilliantly off-kilter rhythm, along with a perfect country twang. That caught my attention enough for me to pay closer attention to the band as a whole. When I did, I was rewarded with thoughtful and nuanced music that rocks as hard as any other band around. I was delighted to discover that the very performance that converted me was released as this CD/DVD combo pack.
The Drive-By Truckers may be easy for fans of older country and rock to dismiss as just a sloppy, Gen-X version of a Southern rock/country band, but I challenge anyone to listen to a Mike Cooley song and write these guys off as sloppy or derivative of anyone. Yes, Patterson Hood has grown on me, but Cooley is the one who just amazes me. Far from thoughtlessly bombastic, their lyrics convey the hardship of being poor in the South without self-righteousness or posturing. That is a difficult balance to strike. The performance here is strong, and while the band doesn't generally stray as far from previous recordings of the tracks as modern jam bands do, they do add something new. However, most fans will probably play the DVD more than the CD anyway. This is well worth picking up for Drive-By Truckers fans, and it just might convert those who aren't yet fans. It converted me. I only give it four stars because Southern Rock Opera sets such a high bar.
- Solid live album from the DBT. The DVD adds a lot, as this line-up is different from their previous DVD, Live at the 40 Watt Club.
If you are not familiar with the DBT, the closest I can compare them to is Neil Young & Crzy Horse. Frontman Patterson Hood is quite the storyteller, and "18 Wheels of Love" is quite a story, probably the best on the album.
I consider this a half-notch below their best works, like Southern Rock Opera, The Dirty South and Decoration Day, but well worth picking up , especially when you consider the value of the DVD.
- Being a huge fan of DBT, this DVD is a great way to see them at their best - live.
- Great post-Jason performance of the Truckers! Good balance between all members. Excellent Living Bubba! Cooley is spot-on as usual.
- I have been a hard core DBT fan since the first day I discovered them. I have always considered myself somewhat of a music snob. I like what I like, you know. I don't much buy into music reviews and the hoopla some of these "so called" critics like to put on paper. Plain and simple, some of it is just over-rated. The Drive by Truckers have become a total escape and presents in my life of listening to music. I found myself buying and listening to everything they've put out....and rightfully so. Being from the South, I "get" their music. I get it soo much that it makes more sense more than 90% of the music out today that is "supposed" to be so full of emotion, stories, personality and so on. The DBT have grabbed the spooky, quirky, fabled, hell raising, whimsical, fantasy, dirty, hard working, country-rock n roll SOUTH....put it on a record....packaged it...and made it ready for your listening pleasure.
I got the pleasure of attending the opening night for the "Brighter than Creations Dark" show in Athens, Georgia. My wife and I traveled more than 6 hours from Alabama and it was worth every second. What makes them even better than imagined is I am a musician myself. I know what a good show is....and then I know what a GOOOOD show is. THANK YOU DBT for putting ouy incredible music!!!!

- MUSE is incredible. This show is amazing, equal to U2 Zooropa and Pink Floyd Pulse. Hard rockin' show that starts fast and doesn't slow down until it is over.
- This CD is amazing, absolutely love it. Really makes me wana go and see a Muse concert. Can't stop listening to it!
- What can I say? Its MUSE they are the best thing, musically, on the planet right now.
- I'm a big fan of Muse but wasn't sure about getting a DVD of a live performance, since sometimes they're not as good as studio recordings. Well, in this case, Muse goes all out and puts on a show that grabs you by the throat in the first moments and doesn't let you go until the very end. There's not a dull moment in the entire concert, and the tracks are all outstanding.
The quality of the video transfer is excellent, with superior clarity and color that's much better than what you'd expect on a DVD (compared to Blu-Ray, which isn't available). Some reviewers have complained about the quick cuts in the editing, but I liked it and felt it was consistent with the way the show was put together. The same thing is true of the shots of the crowd, which I don't usually care for, but in this case, it added to the realism and the excitement. So I give it a score of 10 out of 10 for video quality and a visually appealing show.
I listened to the DTS track the first time and felt that the bass was overdone and the instruments overwhelmed the vocals, at least on my system. I also felt that there was too much echo or reverberation. I think maybe they wanted to duplicate the sound you'd have heard if you'd been there, which it probably does, so by all means give it a try, and then compare it to the PCM stereo track. I tried various adjustments but was unable to get a good balance with the DTS track. I ended up listening to the PCM stereo track instead, channeling the sound through all 5 of my speakers, and I was much more satisfied with the balance and the overall sound listening to it that way. For audio, I give it a 9 out of 10, just because I'm not sure what to think about the whole DTS thing.
Overall, this is one of the best live performances I've seen on a DVD, and definitely one that I'll watch and listen to many times.
The CD is also outstanding, though I agree with those who have said they wished that "Plug In Baby" had been included on the CD. Having said that, it hardly seems fair to complain since they managed to get almost 72 minutes on the CD. The sound is much better than many live CDs, with good balance, clear vocals, and without excessive crowd noise. You hear the crowd but they don't overpower the music.
So, this package offers both a video and audio reproduction of a high-energy, well-produced show that ranks with the best live performances by any band, ever.
- Muse is my latest musical obsession. I had to get this so I can see them live. It is worth every penny, if you are a Muse fan. Getting to see them play all my favorites in front of a sold out crowd at Wembley is something I will probably never get to experience in person, but getting to see it on my tv is the next best thing. :)

- This must rate as not just a Johnny Cash milesone in live recording, but one of the greatest live albums of all time.
The voice, the sincerity, the choice of material, the atmosphere, it's all here.
Top tracks, well all of them, however with Dark As A Dungeon, his voice is so strong and true it's impossible to put into words.
Cocaine Blues is a dyamite of a song and finally Greystone Chapel leaves the inmates with a glimer of hope.
Essential for anyone who loves modern music.
- Those poor sad people who only gave this 1 & 2 stars must lead a very disturbed life.Johnny Cash was the king of country music and always will be.Im not to sure on one of the 1* votes that mentioned Carrie Edwards. If im wrong correct me but didnt she come from the American x factor ,where as Johnny used to sing and write songs from his early days.If the 2* &1* are reading this,go and buy some of Johnnies other albums,he made manyand there must be one you will like, until then !.
- I'd managed to go over a decade collecting a few songs from this album, but never owning it in its entirety. Buy the album. It's completely worth it. There are the classics like At Folsom Prison that everyone can sing along to, songs you need for a crazy day like Cocaine Blues, and Busted for those of us who are suffering from the present economy.
It's livelier than most live albums, with brief humorous dialogue between Johnny, June, and the tough prison crowd.
- I got this CD after watching the movie, Walk The Line. It's a great CD and that's all I gotta say. If you like the movie, you'll like the CD.
- THIS CD IS ONE OF THE BEST COUNTRY MUSIC CD'S I'VE HEARD YET. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

5 comments about Band Of Gypsys.
- If you like Hendrix or just like classic rock guitar this is a MUST HAVE for any serious collection. Excellent live performance, strong display of why he is still so famous to this day.
- "Band of Gypsys," in my opinion, ranks within the top two live albums of all time (the other being The Who's "Live at Leeds"). It's interesting that this album is the result of a contract dispute between Warner Brothers and Capitol Records. Apparently Jimi was forced to deliver an album to Capitol, and for something that began as a necessity, I'm amazed at how much heart and soul was put in to the music.
"Who Knows" and "Machine Gun" are two of the best pieces Jimi ever recorded. Period. The guitar solos, the pounding drum rhythm brilliantly laid down by Buddy Miles, and the haunting vocals make for an unbelievable track. To me, this is the only Jimi Hendrix album that truly showcases his talent. No drug-fueled, hippie-pleasing nonsense, no smashing of amps or setting things ablaze. Just Jimi playing his guitar extremely well, and believe me, that alone is mind-blowing.
Jimi is at his absolute best here.
- One of the best live recordings in rock history...Gypsys captures Hendrix at the top of his game. With the rhythm section of Buddy Miles and Billy Cox, this exploratory improv has true American roots and tastes of funk and soul. Probably the most "soul" of any Hendrix release...mainstream releases anyway. There is another release which is taken from the same run of shows but it is apparent why thiese selections made the cut while the other albums' didnt. This is the cream of the crop from this run...New Years in NYC at Graham's Fillmore.
One need go no further than "Machine Gun" to understand why Jimi is in a completely different category than other electric guitarists. His approach seems other-worldly, particularly in 1970. Although his tendency to explore , improvise, and push the envelope of the creative method in rock csan sometimes seem to go too far---and leave the listener questioning whether the music wouldnt sound better if he stuck to traditional styles and methods....when the stars align Hendrix rides a brilliance that makes one no longer doubt the presence of GOD and the power and existence of unseen forces. Indeed at times likes these Hendrix appears to be going along for the ride with the rest of us...allowing himself to be the medium...channeling the energy and ideas from a mystical source beyond human understanding!
This is definitely beyond HARD rock and perhaps too overpowering for older or less adventurous ears.
"IF IT ISN'T A LIVING BABY, THEN YOUR'E NOT PREGNANT"
-Thank God Jimi's Mother wasn't decieved into believing he was an "inconvenience" and burden, an obstacle to her happiness. Indeed ALL children are gifts from God that bring us hope, joy, and the experience of giving and recieving unconditional love, even though we may not be able to see this truth because of our fear and lack of trust. Money cannot buy these things, man cannot create them on his own. May we revere life and realize EACH INDIVIDUAL PERSON is unique and unrepeatable!
When Freedom is Outlawed, Only Outlaws are Free!
- Always loved this one, my fav. all time Hendrix, anyone who appreciates Jimi's music will never tire of this!
- Protest songs don't usually make me ponder the Nature of Man's Soul. They usually don't allow for much speculation; they're pretty clear in letting you know who's right and who's wrong. The wrong guy is always That guy over there, but "Machine Gun" turns the sights around and puts the crosshairs squarely on the the head and heart of anyone who isn't as disgusted, outraged, bewildered by War as he is. Jimi doesn't let us think that we're the good guys who must oppose some outside force. He magically puts the machine gun in our hands, has us pull the trigger, and experience what it's like to take a life. He can do this so expertly because he knows exactly what it feels like to fire a machine gun. He was for a short time a private in the paratroopers, but was granted an early discharge. He traded in his M16 for a far more effective weapon. His Stratocaster explodes with mechanical ferocity, ripping open our crusty but tender souls with a torrent of apocalyptic mayhem. It's the most spectacular Theater of the Mind I've ever experienced. And he does all this at a New Year's Celebration Concert. So much for a Happy New Year to all.
Except for a couple moments where Buddy Miles insists on slowing things up with some annoying call and response that is just a little too corny, the rest of the album is fantastic. Buddy occasionally slows things up with his plodding, leaden beats, too, and in the video of this show at one point Jimi turns around and gestures for the drummer to pick it up. Or at least keep up. Buddy was a semi-talent. Billy Cox is solid and always in the pocket and quick as a whip when he has to be.
Although this album was released to fulfill contractual obligations, it's no minor effort. Rather, it works real well to demonstrate just how versatile and impatient Jimi's talent was. He wasn't able to settle for anything less than art and this album is necessary to everyone who loves great musical art.

5 comments about Where The Light Is:John Mayer Live In Los Angeles.
- John Mayer, simply put, is one of the greatest musicians of this era. A lot of people may disagree, but the amount of emotions that go into his songs is indisputable. John Mayer's guitar has a voice of its own; the guitar solo at the end of "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" will make the most glorious of all tough guys miss their ex-girlfriends, and bring the rest of us to tears. John Mayer sounds amazing live, and in a lot of his songs, his live versions sound even better than the actual recordings. This CD is a great chance to hear what people mean by "John Mayer is one of the best performers." Another great thing about this CD is some of the dialogue that's put in with John Mayer and the audience at LA when this was recorded. You get a little glimpse into who he is, and that's great to hear. Highly recommend this album. It's great.
- It starts with the nice, mellow, acoustic set that sets the mood for a promising GREAT show! Great choice of songs to start off, ESPECIALLY "Stop This Train!" Kicks in, BLOWING MY MIND with the Trio... Oh man these guys can play! The second CD goes off with the full band set! You can hear EVERYTHING you want to hear on one of his shows! What else can I say??? The man speaks though a guitar with such an easy tone for the ear... I am a musician myself and I just don't get tired of hearing him. I can pick out ANY of his CDs, any day and just listen to the art of guitar playing gone RIGHT! A great buy for whoever is buying this CD!
- I own over 1150 cd's and absolutey love most types of music! Why do I consider this cd amazing and one of the best live performances in the whole bunch? Enough said! Perfect performance.
- My favorite album. A perfect selection of songs. Live adds energy to the performance. It's worth the money to have a good collection of John Mayer.
