  1. The 2 people (or is it 1 double posting) on here who say George Michael can't sing are talking nonsense. OK, you're Queen fans and in your eyes and mine nobody can ever replace Freddy, fair enough, but to say George Michael can't sing is like saying Posh Spice CAN!! It's absurd. I am a massive fan of Queen and on the day of the Tribute Concert it became all too apparent that none of the artists performing could hold a candle to Freddy for sheer vocal ability and performance, then right near the end of the concert George Michael took to the stage. WOW!!! Is all I can say, he nailed it. George sang his butt off that day and you could see and sense the crowd at Wembley appreciating someone who could actually pull it off. They loved it, I loved it and if you don't own this CD you will love it too. This is a fine performance from a fine singer. End of story.

  2. King George is the Best - When we gotta pick a choice of the best of the best of Pop, it's George Michael vs the rest of the rest. Yeah, pick any single or an album of George Michael, it's the hazy, soft and the tempting, sensuous n seductive voice of George that is irresistible to listen. In this Five Live, Somebody to love - I love this song with the repeats somebody...somebody...and teaming up with live performance of Queen, Freddie Mercury classic Somebody to love is the perfect song ever I like. Papa was a rolling stone is yet another superb presentation even with the video and Lisa n George prove their excellence with the music beats behind blending to perfection duo. Killer is one number that I love apart from its theme n lyrics. I would say, for a diehard fan like me, George Michael is great listening and when Queen is a choice with GM, by all means, Freddie Mercury too, stand out great pleasure listening. Go for Five Live - A must collection for a GM Fan till you cross your fingers and await for George Michael's latest new single "An Easiest Affair - Here comes one for the ladies..I have yet to pick this one!

  3. This short E.P. of mostly live performances was mainly an effort to hold fans over in-between albums. Some live performances with Queen were included, including a powerful hit rendition of the Freddie Mercury classic "Somebody To Love" (#30 US) and a lovely cover of Queen's "These are the Days of Our Lives," performed as a duet with Lisa Stansfield. Michael also performs live renditions of Seal's "Killer"(#69 US), which segues into the Rolling Stones' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and a stark, stirring performance of Bob Telson's Oscar nominated "Calling You" (from the BAGDAD CAFE). Also included, for somewhat inexplicable reasons, is a brief snippet of Queen performing "Dear Friends" from it's SHEER HEART ATTACK album. There are enough interesting moments to make this a fine listen for Michael's fans, however, none of the covers top the originals and most listeners will be able to live without it.

  4. Perhaps if I were more of a George Michael fan, this EP would rate higher than three stars. While George does have some wonderful songs, I was never a diehard fan of his work. On this _Five Live_ EP, he teams up with Queen on the fantastic cover of "Somebody To Love," which was taken from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert (along with one other song here), and is hands down the main reason to get this EP, especially if you're a diehard Queen fan like myself. This rendition of the song gives me the goosebumps, and nearly sends me to tears -- just like the original version does. As a bonus, there's Queen's "Dear Friends," (from their 1974 offering, _Sheer Heart Attack_) which closes out the EP on a touching note.

The rest of the tracks, however, aren't as affecting, and are okay at best. "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" has more of an updated dance/club-mix flavor, as opposed to the original psychedelic-soul flavor of the original done by The Temptations. George's version of Queen's "These Are The Days Of Our Lives," also taken from the Mercury tribute concert, is somewhat affecting in regards to the purpose of the performance itself, but not much beyond that, and the other songs I won't even comment on. In short, Queen fans will probably want to own it for the commemorative purposes, the goosebump-inducing performance of "Somebody To Love," and maybe for "These Are The Days of Our Lives" (excluding "Dear Friends"), but will probably not care much for the rest of the album. George Michael fans will probably soak this up.

  5. This is a fun live cd. This is not just Queen. George's version of Killer/Papa was a Rolling Stone is great. Lisa Stansfield and George's duet is good. If you are a George fan, it's worth the 12 bucks. If you're not...check out the track listings before purchasing.

  1. Once voted the worst rock band in America, to listen to this music 30 years later and it is true, up front, in your face, nowhere to hide, live American Rock and Roll!!

  2. it is one of the best live albums ever. buy it. i'll recomended it.

  3. it is one of the best live albums ever. buy it. i'll recomended it.

  4. Grand Funk Railroad...it means a lot to me. Those were the days of my youth, I grow up with that rock music, Mark Farner's fine rhythmic patterns, Mel's exploding and thundering bass, Brewer's precise and brutal drums work...I think I will never forget that energy, that very unique live performance taken from some concerts held that hot summer around the East Cost (only the sleeve photograph is relevant to the Atlanta Pop Festival). This CD it's a must...about the remastering work, the drums is better defined than the vinyl, so too the guitar work...the bass, instead, is less powered (and Schacher used to set West Amps at "10"). The best tracks on it, in my opinion, are "In need" and "Mark says allright"...incredible energy and passion.

  5. This was THE GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in all their rawist, nasty, sexual, high energy, Live Power Trio Performance. This is the Greatest Live Album of all time, there are no overdubs only a few tweaks with the audience noise. This was what GFR was all about, Mel Schacher Playing his BOOMING BASS behind the note. Don Brewer Playing his POUNDING DRUMS ahead of the Note and Mark Farner playing his wild rhythms and screeching leads on GUITAR anywhere; before, after, or in the middle of the note. That magic gave GFR a special sound all to there own, It can't be faked or copied, its something natural to the three musicians. This album captured millions of fans for GFR who still reminisce about it to this day. This is a nice CD set wit a cool little poster and its on two disks so there's nothing cut out. It sounds great, nice and bass heavy like GFR in there power trio days were. If you don't have a copy of Live album on CD this 2 CD set is a good one to get.

  1. There has been a vast amount of concert and studio material finding its way to CD and album from The Stooges and Iggy & The Stooges that it is oftentimes a tough call where to start...or what is actually relevant.

This collection culled from a series of September 1973 gigs at the Whisky a Go Go and a 1974 San Francisco concert is about as solid a release available; Iggy (Pop) Stooge is holding things together, the band is in good form and the audience is enthusiastic. The photo collection from the performances are an added bonus and the entire package is solid.

This is California Dreamin' from a decadent proto-punk perspective, but demonstrates that there were rare moments when an artist who was quickly losing a battle with personal demons could still deliver the goods.

  2. If you're a deep fan you won't be bothered by the bootleg qaulity of the tracks. Iggy's speaking voice is heard among the music culled from 1973 and 1974 gigs. Bass is strong, audience resonates.
It appears that the famous photo seen on the Live In Michigan CD is taken from the '73 show herein. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Some hideous, some beautiful photography in the booklet.
    Prince...bend an ear, baby.

  3. 'California Bleeding' brings us die hards three(3) live concert snippets. Two of the three are from a five-night stay the Stooges played at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in September,1973.Stooges fans, please take note:these tracks are NOT of the same that were released on the French label Revenge, titled The Stooges-'Live At The Whiskey'.The show on THAT disc was from the Sept.16 gig.The tunes on THIS disc are from the Sept.15 and Sept.19 gigs.Probably not much difference, but they are culled from another show.Sound quality seems to vary on certain cuts.I,personally was impressed with "Open Up And Bleed",the rarely played "Johanna" and performance art-like "She Creatures Of The Hollywood Hills".Noticed that the Stooges fifth member(?) keyboardist Scott Thurston was playing some pretty mean harmonia here and there. No better than 'Double Danger'.

  4. This is raw. This is very nasty nasty rock n roll made by some very intense guys. It's live, and it's desperate. Recorded at various L.A. nightspots, including the Whisky..this album captures Iggy and the stooges and their ferocious, seat of the pants best. "Take it easy brother, take it easy brother.." Buy this cd only if you wanna get down n dirty with the Igster.. if not..check out the slick new remix of raw power. That rocks, but CA Bleeding is truly RAW. Cut down to the bone.

  1. This album pops up every once in a while with a new name and sometimes new and fancy song titles... These live songs from the beginning of Alice's career are only a necessity to buy if you already got everything concerning Alice... if not, don't buy it. The only studio tracks with good sound quality like "Ain't That Just Like A Woman" are even NOT Alice Cooper material at all!!! And that's official!!! So if you want these live tracks in better quality, look out for the "Live At The Whiskey A-Gogo" album, or buy the studio tracks on "Pretties For You" an "Easy Action". But drink a sixpack of Budweiser while listening even to these two: There are only 5 songs on both albums that won't make an unsuspecting listener puke... and two of them are also on the Box Set - perhaps BUYING THAT might be you best bet!

  2. This is a Great Classic, dont listen to the other fools, take my wonderful advice and buy this precious Compact Disc today..

  3. It's hard to believe alice cooper could be capable of such a horrible mess! at some points this doesn't even resemble music. If you are going to buy any alice cooper album PLEASE start with "Love It To Death", and forget you ever heard about this album. I've had burps that were more musical than this!

  4. This is not a new albulm at all, but an albulm that keeps having its tracks rearranged and retitled and resold. This albulm is bad. It sounds like a drunken live albulm. Each and every song falls apart. Most of the time it doesn't even sound like they are playing the same song. If you think you want to hear these songs, then buy the boxed set and hear the best of them done right. The only clear song on the albulm is Aint that just like a woman. But the rest of the albulm is bad.

  5. Having been an Alice fan since 1972, I was surprised by this latest release...is it Alice, Elvis or the Byrds..hard to tell. One can certainly hear some of his earliest inspirations in this odd mixture of sound (I hesitate to say music). My husband and I were fortunate to attend the final dress rehearsal for Brutal Planet in Phx in May...now THAT'S Alice at his best! Just like a fine wine, Alice you get better with age.

  1. Good to see this has been remastered and given a proper reissue.

I actually have the original one-disc release of this CD, which I originally bought to replace my LP. On that edition, not only were a few songs dropped to keep it down to one disc (an all-too-common practice back in the day), but the edits were *utterly* artless. There are literally jarring jump cuts between some of the tracks.

I hope it was also remixed so that the double-tracking Anderson did with his vocals is a little less obvious. I mean, just how did he manage to sing harmony AND lead at the same time in concert? And hey, while I'm at it, did they restore Anderson's naughty words during his witty repartee? Mine were actually bleeped. BLEEPED! HAH!

But I digress. If you are a Tull fan, of course you need this release... Probably already have it... and are reading this review to find something to take issue with.

If you are a new Tull fan, you should have this set, as opposed to any of the countless budget comps out there. It really is a classic lineup and a representative sample of their classic music.

Casual Tull fans, however, will not find much here in the minor live variations to recommend above the studio efforts (sit down, Tullhead, I'm talking to the casual fan). You'd probably be happier with "Living In The Past."

I consider myself a Tull fan -- but apparently not a rabid one -- Since I myself am still trying to decide whether I should bother to shell out for a THIRD TIME for this release. Maybe I'll wait for a 24-carat gold edition with extra tracks and a bonus limited edition weather balloon.

  2. Highly recommended. The guitar work & drumming are excellent and it covers most of Tull's major hits including a nice concise version of Thick as a Brick.

  3. It's a shame that 3 songs were cut to get this album on one CD. Some of Ian Anderson's banter is also missing, such as his reference to "young American boys" in the audience.

But this is still the best live rock album since "Live at Leeds" (maybe better). It has an excellent acoustic set near the start of the concert. Near the middle is a 12 minute version of "Thick As A Brick"; the best version of this song that I've heard. "Hunting Girl" has some excellent guitar work by Martin Barre and bass by John Glasscock. "Aqualung" and "Locomotive Breath" make a fitting wrap up. Notice how Barriemore Barlow's percussion sounds like steam on the latter song. All of the other songs range from solid to excellent.

The good news is that Amazon's UK site will offer a remastered version in February 2004. And it has 2 CDs!

  4. This live is superb with a good choice of songs ( from the songs from the wood, heavy horses, aqualung ... years ) It will avalaible in november with the remastered version ( very good ) with at the same periode "stormwatch" and "A".

  5. The unavailablity, of course. As a Tull diehard I have been looking for this album for a long time. Thanks to the joys of shopping on Amazon all these goldies for us not-so-oldies are now so readily available.
This has got to be their BEST live album. Great sound...so different from the studio albums. It is like listening to new songs but you know them so well!
Excellent flute work....this album has one of my favorite renditions of Bouree. You've gotta hear it!

  1. Journey's first live album in 1981 just before multi-million seller ESCAPE is what live album should be. Particularly Steve Perry's voice is outstanding. He rarely drop notes even at high-notes and in some places better than studio version. There's no OPEN ARMS, SEPERATE WAYS, DON'T STOP BELIEVING today's Journey fans take it for granted in live. Yet this prowess of band is super and unrivalled. Except for some parts where LIGHTS AND STAY AWHILE mixes incoherently performance is perfect.

Verdict: Best live album I have ever encountered.
    Rating: 96 out of 100
Recommeded for: Every Journay fan, 80s rock and pop fans.

  2. What a great trip into the past. Not only the sounds and songs of Journey but live to boot.
Most excellent sounds to "road trip" by.
    Rosanne

  3. .....You see this one right over here?....Do you know what that means?" Yes, I would guess that anybody at that particular show who didn't know what that meant, quickly found out that they were involved in something special---- One of the most inspired, beloved live albums to date! And although this album was recorded over the span of many months on their world tour, one could easily be "fooled" into thinking this was taken from a single show. This live release simply has an exceptional flow to the varied material heard here....almost as if the people who edited this together, were aiming for that effect. The band must have been in great 'form' for the entire Tour....great musicianship, great crowd interaction, and one heck of a great setlist. I don't know of many other groups besides Journey that can alternate between straight-on 'rockers' and heart-wrenching 'ballads', and keep an audience enthralled for the entire show. And the Solos on this album are absolutely 'Killer'... Mr. Schon certainly gets his fair share of the audiences' attention....even the "not too common" bass solo/spanking in "La Do Da" brings Mr. Valory kudos from the crowd. But for me, being a drummer, its Mr. Smith that caught my attention in a BIG way with his wonderfully constructed drum solo. Steve Smith has become my single favorite drummer over the years and I literally NEVER tire of hearing his facility and mastery on the drumkit( if you've only heard Steve with Journey, you MUST do yourself a favor and explore some of his "other-worldly" work with Jean-Luc Ponty, Vital Information , and Vital Tech Tones....absolutely amazing playing by all involved!). But I would venture to say that Mr. Perry played the biggest role in keeping these audiences "on their toes" during the recording sessions for "Captured"---- Steve Perry is truly one of the great vocalist of Pop-Rock music and should certainly go down in music's history as so.

As for the individual songs here on "Captured", there is a nice mix from the bands past releases...though you won't hear anything from the bands "progressive" years here. I like nearly everything Journey has put out, but, through no fault of the band, I have been 'over-exposed' to some of the songs here...thanks to our local "small-Town" AOR radio station. So with that said, I do find myself skipping through a handfull of tunes...most notably: "Lights", "AnyWay You Want It", "Wheel in the Sky", and "Lovin',Touchin',Squeezin'". Don't get me wrong, I love those songs, but its the songs I hadn't been exposed to that keeps me coming back to this album---- "Dixie Highway", "Walks Like a Lady", "Line of Fire", "Too Late", "La Do Da" and, possibly my favorite (slow) Journey tune, "Stay Awhile". By far, this is my preferred version of this great band----shortly after this recording Greg Rollie would move on, and Journey would hit 'SuperStar' status with their next album ("Escape")...not to be 'De-throned' till many years later. This album is truly one of the most exciting live albums ever recorded...and Journey is truly one of the best, universally liked bands in the history of R-n-R---- #3 of my all-time favorite live albums....See Why For Yourself!

  4. Captured is a superb live album from one of my favourite rock bands which brought out hits like faithfully and open arms. This great album features hits like Wheel in the sky, lovin touchin squeezin.Very highly recommended.A must have. Please get this classic but avoid the latest album from Madonna which is really awful.

  5. Journey's seventh US release and first and only double live album Captured was released in February of 1981.
Captured was recorded on Journey's 1980 tour in support of the album Departure. This album marked the last appearance of founding member keyboardist and vocalist Gregg Rolie whom would retire from the band during the mixing of this album.
Rolie, along with lead singer Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon, bass player Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith rock out on this album and until the release of Live in Houston 1981 this was as close as you got to a Journey concert on album.
We begin with the taped recording of the Evolution track Majestic which then segues into the killer Where Were You and is a superb version. Next is Just The Same Way which is one of my favorites, Schon's soloing here rocks. We then segue into Line of Fire which is a great rocking shuffle. Next is the medley of Lights/Stay Awhile which is superb. Too Late is next and rivals the studio version. The exclusive track Dixie Highway is next and a studio version of this track was not ever recorded. Then the first half(first vinyl disc) ended with the medley of Feeling That Way/Anytime which features stellar harmonies once again with Rolie and Perry do a nice job trading off vocals.
The original album's second disc starts with the rocker Do You Recall which is a great version of the Evolution track. Next is Walks Like A Lady which includes some bluesy work from Schon and Rolie before ending with a wll of feedback from Schon's guitar which would segue into a killer La Do Da which is better than its studio counterpart and has a bass and drums improv from Valory and Smith before going into a killer drum solo from Steve "the Machine Gun" Smith. Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' follows and is another highlight with stellar harmonies and excellent guitar work from Schon who plays some nasty slide here. Next is Wheel In The Sky which is a killer version and is rivaled only with the Live in Houston 1981 version and this one segues into the set closing Any Way You Want It in stellar fashion. The closing studio track The Pary's Over(Hopelessly in Love) is a great song and featured Steve Roseman on keyboards as Gregg Rolie was gone from the band by then but is a great song.
Captured remains a classic and was a successful live album peaking at #9 upon release and gave Journey its fourth Platinum album in a row. Journey proved with Captured that they could rock live and were great live!
    Recommended!

5 comments about Live Grape.

  1. This is an interesting collection of random songs by a band that is not even close to being Moby Grape. Done live, and done pretty well, I find this album highly entertaining. Full of very tasty, yet simple blues guitar licks, and a real hodge-podge collection of songs by different writers including an original by Cornelius Bumpus that shines pretty brightly. If you look at it as a good collection of listenable songs, you won't be dissapointed. I liked it well enough to buy the disc to accompany my old vinyl version.

  2. While appreciating the comments of longtime Moby Grape afficianados who might have had different expectations, I found this to be very enjoyable and listenable. Some great rolling blues tunes and some shuffles that would actually be great listening music on the Carolinas beach scene, which is not what I might have expected. If you don't have preconceptions from longtime knowledge of the band, you should be able to enjoy this simply for the music itself.

  3. "Live Grape" is a welcome addition to any Moby Grape fan's collection because of its historical importance, being the 1978 reunion album. Truth be told, the contents are slight because of the absence of original drummer Don Stevenson and original bassist Bob Moseley. Skip Spence apparently makes a cameo or two ("Must Be Goin' Now Dear"). With substitutions Cornelius Bumpus (later in the Doobie Brothers) and John Oxendine, the playing is very well executed and the energy level is high. However, the creative songwriting impetus that carried them through their first five albums seems to be lost. There are some highlights, including the Peter Lewis compositions "That Lost Horizon" and "Up In The Air". Overall, one gets the impression that Moby Grape were, at this stage, a great bar band (the Cornelius Bumpus tune "Set Me Down Easy" is a great example). Unfortunately, without the full quintet of principals, the writing isn't as varied. One misses the the throaty soulfulness of Moseley, the other half of the Miller/Stevenson writing duo and the mercurial fire of a fully-participative Skip Spence.

  4. I BOUGHT THIS CD AFTER READING ABOUT MOBY GRAPE IN ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE. THE CD THEY REVIEWED, MOBY GRAPE, THEIR FIRST ALBUM,WASN'T AVAILABLE, SO I BOUGHT THIS ONE.
IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE CD'S TO LISTEN TO. IT'S A GREAT ALBUM. BUY IT NOW AND THANK ME LATER.

  5. This is a great album! Issued in 1978 without any mention of "Moby Grape" anywhere (no pictures either) it was a record that fell into the bins because it was released by a small label that didn't promote. But hey, any album that is released on a small indie label gets that treatment. This features all the original Grape guitarists together again for "Must Be Goin' Now,Dear", a new Spence track. Recorded some 10 years after he left the band (discounting the reunion in 1971)after his last performances. Also featuring Cornelius Bumpus (Doobies,Steely Dan,etc.) and John Oxendine on drums. The record sounds part studio, part warm-up, some live. Out of print, but worth finding.
