  1. A series of Jimi Hendrix performances from the Band of Gypsys concerts finally gets the deluxe treatment from MCA and Experience Hendrix, as tapes from both first and second shows are brought together, correctly identified (1986's Band of Gypsys 2 actually featured three tracks that weren't by the band at all) in one deluxe two-disc set. This newly expanded edition contains the only live versions of "Earth Blues," "Auld Lang Syne," "Stepping Stone," and "Burning Desire"; Hendrix tunes specifically worked up for the performance that rarely surfaced again like "Izabella," "Power of Soul," and "Who Knows"; newly remastered versions of "Stop" and "Hear My Train a-Comin'" (both originally presented on Band of Gypsys 2 in horrendous sound) and classic performances of "Stone Free," "Changes," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," and "Wild Thing." Equally as revelatory is one of the two alternate versions included of "Machine Gun," every bit as stunning as the better-known version. Though this new edition hardly makes all previous incarnations obsolete, it presents the man at his most challenged and brilliant.

  2. The Greatest Guitarist that ever lived in his unaltered, untampered-with purity. There needs to be more recordings released like this as the world can benefit from pure guitar talent unlike the stuff they play on the modern rock stations today.

  3. They left off "Message to Love"! It's hard to believe... This song is available on the original release 'Band of Gypsies'. Why not here? Simple! They spect the fans to buy both. What a shame!

  4. ONE OF HENDRIX'S BEST LIVE SHOWS. RECORDED NEW YEAR'S EVE 69-70 IN NEW YORK. IT IS A MUST FOR HENDRIX FAN'S COLLECTION. THE VERSION OF MACHINE GUN IS NOTHING SHORT OF A PSYCHEDELIC MIND-BENDING BLUES MELTDOWN AS ONLY JIMI COULD PLAY IT.

  5. Hard to believe, but they left off "Message to Love" the best song from the whole concert. It's available on the Band of Gypsies. Why not here? Greed. They want fans to buy both albums. Typical.

  1. This is a awsome cd I have all John stuff and this has to be my faviret. The last songs with Yoko I dont like that much but the other ones I can listen to over and over again. I love the way John and Eric play Money it just gets stuck in your head, and a funny but sad thing about this album is that they edited out most of Yoko screams during Johns songs because I also have the dvd and on it theres alot more of the Yoko screams.

  2. Side 1 on the origional lp was great . You could over look ocasional NOISES from Yoko Ono . Side 2 was all Yoko Ono moanimg and screaming . (Either it is an aquiored taste or finger nails on a chalk board)This cd always tends to be high priced for half a cd .(Maybe you can find at a 50 % discount)

  3. I actually have the original US Apple LP. It's out of print here, though. This was performed at a peace festival in the Toronto area Spetember 1969. The Plastic Ono Band included Eric Clapton, longtime cohort Klaus Voorman, and future Yes drummer Alan White. Yoko of course spilled her guts! John was not fully ready to return to the stage after three years away (not counting TV), even more on his own (you all know how it was). He didn't even have a chance to rehearse, so he had to wing it. He had to improvise on "Give Peace a Chance", as he did on the original anyway. "Cold Turkey" had not yet been cut in the studio. "Yer Blues" was the only Beatles original he did. Yoko screams through "Don't Worry Kyoko" and "John, John (Let's Hope for Peace)". This did sell better than the three LPs combined that actually sold more papers than the records themselves! This was originally typed on 9 October 2005, the 65th anniversary of Lennon's birth.

  1. Peter's Live Performance is nothing short of a masterpiece using unique combination of different instruments, backup vocals, and being creative with many songs over seven minutes long. Gabriel's talent live creates a magical journey where you can really feel part of the show.
Among favorites is: In Your Eyes, Secret World,Don't Give Up, and Steam.

  2. I typically find it hard to enjoy a live album if I know the studio versions really well (and vice-versa if I knew the live versions first). But this one is an amazing exception (along with Wilco's 'Kicking Television')! "Secret World" and "Shaking The Tree" are OUTSTANDING! The energy is insane. Paula Cole sang on the Eurpean leg of this tour (damn, I wish she had been with him in Orlando '93). She's just brilliant! I know some may find this blasphemous, but I prefer her vocals on "Don't Give Up" over Kate Bush. And that's my .02. Buy this CD!!!!

  3. Secret World Live is a must for any Peter Gabriel fan or someone who wants to become one. The live show accentuates his already masterful songs. It is heavy on songs from US his new album at the time but also includes such classics as In Your Eyes, Sledgehammer, etc.

  4. I saw this concert on DVD and love it! I had to have the cd to listen to on the go. Paula Cole, Tony Levin and all the other musicians in this show are a great compliment to Peters vision and sound. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a Peter Gabriel fan! Buy this CD!

  5. I've loved Peter Gabriel's inspiration and creativity since the early 'Genesis days' and really appreciate his eclectic field of diverse interests and influences.
This is a killer CD. If you're put off buying it because you have the tracks imbeded in other CD collections etc- don't be. Gabriel does really well bringing fresh energy to his works in different seasons and this is no exception. It is just fantastic. Consider it a fresh interpretation of many classics and an exercise powerfully assisted by the energy of the perfomances, the vib of the audience and the not inconsequential collaboration with Paula Cole.
    The DVD is also great!

5 comments about David Bowie: Santa Monica 1972 Live.

  1. This is one of my all time favorite recordings. I have this CD version, and a vinyl 2 disc set I got in the 70s. The variable audio quality and audience chatter are part of its charm. I love the ebullient intimacy and irreverance of "Space Oddity", the exhausted Bowie flubbing the lines to "Suffragette City" while the band roars on. Mike Garson's piano sounds unfortunately awful, but Trevor Bolder's bass parts are nimble and the magnificent Mick Ronson's wrecking ball guitar may damage your speakers. Consider yourself warned.

  2. The greatest strength of this recording is the fact that it is LIVE. One night. One continuous take. It's a testament to just how good this artist was (and is)and how his talent takes over the stage without resorting to recording tricks or artifice. It's easy to think of Bowie as an image maker, and easy to forget that he's a music maker. The Spiders prove themselves to be a white-hot, smokin' band too. This recording gives me pleasure every time I listen, and I always find something new.

  3. I have this on vinyl bootleg I acquired in the 1980's. If youngsters question why their elders claim Bowie is so influential they only have to listen to this. Apart from the duff take-off special effects noise bowie tries to conjure up in Space Oddity and the flat chorus on Five Years, this album blows away any other Bowie concert CD. The sound is incredible on the vinyl - I can't say for the CD edition as I have never heard it. I had the privelege of seeing Bowie on his STAGE tour in Sydney and was very disappointed by the concert album they released of that tour. I'm happy this 1972 performance has finally officially been released - but inexplicably it seems to have failed to make much of an impact- even with Bowie fans. Being there in 1972 must have been an incredible experience . As far as I'm concerned its the only Bowie album anyone needs to own!

  4. An absolute must-have for every true Bowie fan.I finally got to see David play live nearly a year ago and one thing I'll say about a David Bowie concert, the man simply takes you into his own world for over two hours.A must-be there event! The shindig on this disc took place on October 20,1972.Total of eighteen cuts and a duration of 76:39.Thank goodness for the invention of compact discs,no doubt.I remember years ago when the only source of an early '70's Bowie concert was some pricey lousy sounding bootleg put on 2-lp vinyl. Now,the fan gets the entire show one shiny disc.Great matching art work to go with it.Tunes I couldn't get enough of were "Ziggy Stardust","The Superman","Space Oddity","John,I'm Only Dancing","Jene Genie","Suffragette City" and "Rock&Roll Suicide".One of the better archive concerts EVER to be released, period!

  5. OK folks-- remember this is 1972-- this is a live radio broadcast-- they are mixing on the fly
A stunning representation of the Bowie experience
Sure the levels are off from time to time i.e. Jean Genie, but look at it as a whole entity, warts and all. He flubs lyrics in Suffragette City (which he did again just recently in Cleveland 2004), the mix can be questionable from time to time BUT IT'S 1972!! A stunning collection of songs and better than the original version of the Ziggy Sardust movie S/T. Mick Ronson proved he was the next guitar god. Crank it up!

  1. hawkwind the phscydelic band from the seventies who had a hit sung by the growling man lemmy this is "live and rare"
a cd i found with the other album for a "£5.00 a bargain if i ever did see one HMV have no idea at all, what's rare
this album i've never seen in the shops again and it's really bad because it's a class live album yeah the sound quality may be a bit dodgy, but the quality of the songs are there
features "born to go" off there first slbum
"silver machine" the classic first single"
    "angels of death"heavy song dude
"who's gonna win the war" polictics
and the classic trippy song of fifteen minutes
"you shouldn't do that" s mega epic yeah it's repetitive
a class album from the pioneers of space rock and the backbone of the heavy metal band lemmy would leader "motorhead"

  2. A decent quality budget priced CD aimed probably at Hawkwind die-hards,for the most part. However,if you happen to be a new fan,'Live&Rare...' isn't bad to have first, before you have a chance to check out all their actual album reissues.Total of fifteen cuts, several of which came off their 'Acid Daze 1' and 'Acid Daze 2' compilation discs. It's always nice to hear the "Motorhead" edit where Dave Brock sings instead of Lemmy,as well as these live versions of "Born To Go","Earth Calling","Space Is Deep" and "You Shouldn't Do That".Those last two came from 'Best&The Rest Of...'(see my review). Also dug the rehearsal cut of "Magma" and their experimental tune "Douglas In The Jungle" that SEEMS like it's a different mix than the one that showed up on one of the 'Weird Tape' releases.Funny thing, this CD has been out for awhile now and until recently,I've never seen a copy of it anywhere.Go figure.

5 comments about Bridge School Concerts, Vol. 1.

  1. The nice thing about this is: it's live and acoustic. Forgetting about the huge mega charity concert events like Live Aid for a moment which are often more hype and spectacle - this grassroots album is a heartfelt reminder of what music is about. The result is a really nice collection which gels together seamlessly from track to track, but assembles some great music.

What I'd really like to know is how they got such a stunning line up of singers to perform for the school benefit! Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Bowie, Pearl Jam, etc. A eclectic ensemble but one that sings in unison. Couldn't be better. Get it and support the Bridge School!

  2. I enjoyed the c.d.and the great artist that took the time for such a great cause like the Bridge. I enjoy Neil Young`s music and am a great fan. My Heart goe`s out to Neil,Pegi and family for all the hard work to help all these gifted children. Will look forward to the next Bridge Concert. J.C. Milwaukee [P.S. Does Neil ever take a rest? Take care Neil.

  3. This is as good as any good album by any of the artists featured here. There are some stand out songs/performances and some good ones and some okay ones. "Live" makes a difference. Favorites are by Elvis Costello, Tracy Chapman, and Patti Smith.

  4. Unless you know what the Bridge School is, you'd foolishly pass this work of art by... The Bridge School is a 'Stellar' school for handicapped children, located near Stanford University in CA. The concerts at the Bridge School are like having the likes of David Bowie, Edward Veddward and Neil Young playing their hearts out in your backyard, for you (apologies to EV), because you are such a wonderful person. The Lovemongers (I think are Ann and Nancy Wilson of HEART) version of Led Zepelin's (sp) Battle of Evermore is 'jaw dropping'. This CD is, simply put, Music's Best Kept Secret... Buy it

  5. Compilation discs are a dime a dozen and many are quite good but many more are a waste of time. My review title is not hyperbole. First, all of the artists who appear seem to ratchet up their performances because they are playing for such a terrific cause established by one of contemporary music's most respected stars. Even though the artists all donate their talent to the Bridge School Concerts, one can surmise that getting a call from Neil and Pegi Young to appear is a thrill.
Naturally, all of the performances are excellent since they have been carefully chosen from many shows, but my favorite tracks are the five in a row from Simon and Garfunkel, David Bowie, Pearl Jam, the Love Mongers (the Wilson sisters from Heart), and Nils Lofgren.
Bowie's complete set here has been widely bootlegged and it's easy to see why. Likewise, Vedder's vocal is brilliant, but the Wilson sisters cover of Zeppelin's Battle of Evermore is uncanny.
The fact that all of the performances are unplugged is an added treat since most of these songs are electric in their original incarnations.

Please do yourself and the Bridge School a favor and buy this c.d.

  1. Can't believe that no one else has yet reviewed this 2-CD import release.Maybe not an absolute must-have but a decently assembled audio diary (sort to speak) of the first-ever annual Hawkfest event.Total of thirteen tracks,I thought maybe two of these cuts didn't really belong, being Jez Nugget's "Kansas City Blues" and Connecting Route's "Intro"(what's a reggae tune doing on this compilation?). Let's move onto the true gems of this should-have Voiceprint title.I was impressed with Hawkwind's "Night Of The Hawks", the spaced out Tribe Of Cro's "I Have No Life",Astralasia's cover of Hawkwind's "Uncle Sam's On Mars" (they add a whole new dimension to the Bob Calvert classic), the Mr.Quimby's Beard track "Mystery",Bedouin's "LSD",the Litmus contribution of "Invader" and One Eyed Bishop's cover of the early Hawkwind(off their debut album) staple "Hurry On Sundown".This isn't the first band I've ever heard cover this tune, but it sounds very good.Another CD to put in the player after 1 am. Long live space rock! Enjoy.
