  1. A wonderful collection that demonstrates The Beatle's at their absolutely energetic best! If you're disappointed by the sound quality of such recordings as Live In Hamburg, or At The Star Club, then you'll really like Live At The BBC.

Many of these songs are previously unreleased, buy any true hard core Beatles fan will find this to be a necessary addition to their collection.

  1. well, what can I say?..... WHAT A STINKER! Dave Anderson's a wanker!!! sound quality is very poor.... if ya buy it, it'll only collect dust! This is not an official release, and it sounds like someone stuffed a two dollar tape recorder down their trowsers!!!

  2. First off,I'd like to mention that I can certainly understand as to why most people(even the most extreme Hawkfans)might strongly dislike this CD.The sound is not that good, but it is very listenable.I've heard a lot worse.I heard that Nik Turner was ACTUALLY paid not to put this recording out. But,'Bring Me The Head...' does serve the purpose of a fan hearing a halfway decent audience-like home made taped performance of the band from May,1973.I guess I've gotten used to the disc for what it is.It starts off with two tunes that are unavailable anywhere else "Gaga" and a decent Nik Turner poem "In The Egg".Soon after "Orgone Accumulator" there's another Turner poem "Wage War" which is pretty good,in my opinion.Other 'Wind classics are present, like "Master Of The Universe",a good version of "Urban Guerilla","Welcome To The Future","Sonic Attack" and "Silver Machine".I heard awhile back that a French label,Spalax reissued this title;with a 30% improvement remastering job on the sound quality. Also noticed that Turner isn't even listing on the back cover.Have to wonder why.

  3. heavenly bliss if ever a drummer held UP, BANGED A BEAT FOR A BUNCH OF HEADS FIRMLY TOASTED BEFORE LIFT OFF SWIMMING down stream WASH OUTS simon king tries to KEPT A FLOAT[hawkwind here a [CAST OF BURNT OUTS [SHRILL DISCORDANT HISS mish mash mosh pit SLOP SLOSHEMP SPACE EXEECUTIONERSMILESMIRED behind IN THE SLUDGE TAR PIT,,]

  4. All else aside, I've heard better sound quality from tape recorders placed under a chair than you can find on this one.

To bad it is a waste of some decent cover art and a name for an album.

  5. I felt I needed to contribute this review to drive the average rating further down. No offense to the person who gave this two stars, but this disc doesn't deserve ONE. The info on its dubious origins was new to me but not surprising. This one has almost an identical song list to one I have on vinyl but didn't see listed here (might've missed it among the other 121 entries), called "Live 70-74." That one is not the greatest recording either, but it's an audiophile's dream compared to this terrible offering. It would be worth it to get a copy of the hilarious "In The Egg," but find it on another release and don't bother with this one. In addition to the overall poor quality, the recording levels are almost nonexistent. Unless you crank it up to maximum volume you won't even believe there is ANY sound on this disc at all.

4 comments about Ice Pick Slim.

  1. This is longer than the average EP. "I'm Mad Like Elderidge Cleaver" starts out with audience interaction, moves to an updated & psychedelisized take on "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" from John Lee Hooker, then degenerates into some of the ugliest heavy electric guitar noises and vocal grunts imaginable and hangs out in that musical netherworld for one hell of a long time, ending with a slight wind down, then a SCREAM! This is the real deal if you are into free-form/metal/punk/ unclassifiable beautifully horrible music (?), and if you're a fan of the 5, there at least a 50/50 chance this is your thing. "Ice Pick Slim" is more reserved (well, you could say that about most any other music), but still long and plenty of jamming. I've heard it's based on the Instrumental "Tunji" by John Coltrane, but the 5 really make it their own. Flute solo in the middle, great sound (as with the entire EP), and this one is wild but maybe not so angry as "Mad like Eldridge".

  2. Three tracks clocking in at a total of 40+ minutes, the "Ice Pick Slim" EP is the MC5 at the absolute height of their abilities. Capturing some of the "ferocious five's" most inspired live performances, the raw power contained within this single CD not only overcomes the confines of the studio, but also forcefully breaks down the very barriers of rock music itself. While most punk acts in the 60s had embraced the noble crusade of returning rock to its primordial, abrasive, fuzzed-out roots, the MC5, like the Velvet Underground, chose to use the wild energy of punk to aggressively innovate the stale state of popular music, not only shock. This unique goal of innovation has never been better represented than on the wildly original "Ice Pick Slim" mini-album. Surpassing rock, abandoning punk, and leaving the world of traditional music behind, this EP dives headfirst into a jarring collage of Sun Ra free jazz and Jimi Hendrix accelerated blues. Robin Tyner's horrifically anguished wails and the dueling guitars' rabid lust for mayhem are fueled by Michael Davis and Dennis Thompson's propulsive rhythms, raging ahead in an uncontrollable orgasm of adrenaline. Tyner's surprisingly melodic flute playing and John Sinclair's opposing tenor sax blats only add to the confusion, while the songs' stews of improvisation and rehearsed riffs swell to gigantic proportions which are no longer under the five's loose control. In every way, these two tracks are exactly how improvisational pieces and extended jams ought to be played. Referencing one idea after the next as each musician fights to prolong a groove for as long as it'll hold, The MC5 treats music as a living, breathing entity that can be shaped and changed at will. In fact, the title track and "Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver" push so far over the edge that they not only change the definition of rock, but actually redefine the entire approach to its creation. Simply a musical translation of the MC5's inborn abilities, "Ice Pick Slim" is less a musical end product than a true experience that the listener has been granted the privilege of sharing. The perfect compliment to the MC5's renowned live masterpiece "Kick Out the Jams," "Ice Pick Slim" completes the band's expansive vision, finally providing a full picture of the group's visionary 1968 sound.

  3. well this is one for collectors, 3 live tracks the last two being very long jams, its pretty cool, the covers nice too! I don't have the disc with me at the moment (I am at work getting out of doing anything!) but I think the disc is about 35 mins or so...the motor city 5 will rock yo' ass!!

  4. The Mc5 paved the way for punk bands. Back in 1968 they shocked even the most liberal listeners. Pacaked with the punch of The White Panthers led by John Sinclair, anything by the 5 is worth a listenn.

  1. Rather you're a new fan of the New York Dolls or an old fan, this live archive release is IT.Can never express just how much that I,personally love archive CD releases as such.Sort of lets us know that SOMEONE out there in the music industry is thinking of us TRUE rock&roll fans.'Live In...' was originally a radio broadcast that came from Luxembourg.Eleven power house cuts of pure full-hearted sweat-in-your-face glam punk is what the purchaser gets when he/she puts this disc in the player.Every tune is a winner, specially "Bad Girl","Pills","Vietnamese Baby","Chatterbox" and "Jet Boy".Recommended.

  2. At the end of December 1973 the Dolls recorded a live show in Paris France for a future radio broadcast. Sound quality of the recording is good and the band puts on an energetic show. If you're looking for a live recording, I would pick this Paris show over the Red Patent Leather show.

  1. I've been a big fan of Triumph after seeing them several times. Some have criticized the sound quality, but I find nothing wrong with it. (Of course I was listening to their bootlegs before this was released.} The only problem I have with it is for some reason the didn't include Allied Forces & The Drum Solo that was on the original vinal & tape release which would have fit on the cd. It would have been nice if they put The Blinding Light Show on as well. If you want to get the full live Triumph experiance I recommend this one & the King Biscuit Four Hour show.

  2. I wanted to give it 4.5 stars but it didnt give me the option. I am buying this CD because I bought the tape when it was released in '85 and it is now worn out. Seeing Triumph on tour many times in my youth - I can say this album typifies their fantastic musicianship, tightness, vocal range, guitar playing/soloing, live performance energy ......you get the picture. This is the type of album you have to crank when your driving in your car, and that is when I discovered my tape doesnt work anymore. Anyhow, when it was released, it was almost like a greatest hits - only better due to it being live and professionally mixed. Although I have to admit my musical tastes have broadened since I bought my 1st Triumph album on vinyl, I can not stand the thought of not having this album (CD) in my collection. Every tune on it is good. You will not be disappointed. If you like adrenaline rock - you have to have this. And - if I didnt have any Triumph albums, and could only get one, this one would be it, followed by Allied Forces. This album is at the height of their career and ROCKS. I plan on checking out some of Rik's solo stuff, including a new Jazz album I heard he came out with. Incredible musician ................ I will say no more.......get it!!

  3. I really like this record. The sound quality is pretty good for mid 80's production. The studio albums are more crisp but this record is raw and you can feel the electricity. Having seen Triumph in 1986, I can say this is very close to being there. The song selection is good, the playing is tight and it seems like the boys are having a good time. Listen to the crowd interaction on "Laying it on the line", wow, that is what a live album is all about. This is a must have for a true 80's rock/metal fan.

  4. Thank you, A music fan from Brasilia, Brazil. I am glad to know my feelings about the sound quality of this recording are shared. When I first purchased it, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It sounded like is was recorded with a microphone lying next to one of the monitors on the stage. It has taken me a while to get past it, and enjoy the performance itself.

And once you can do that, the CD holds one true gem on it, worth the price of admission alone. It is 'Magic Power'. Now, the original is just fine. The harmony, sound structure and overall 'quiet' feel to it melds well with the, okay, I'll say it, **corny** lyrics. But my, oh my. This live version doubles the length, and pumps it full of steroids. Gil's drum work on this song is absolutely incredible. His 'rolling thunder' goes right in line with Rik's rolls on the guitar during the bridges. And Rik's solo displays how pumped he can get when the song is soaring. And I occasionally have to remind myself that, with all the exceptional voice range Rik has to do on the song, he's also playing that guitar at the same time. And we must mention the 'forgotten' third member, Mike Levine, doing a great job of the bass and programmed keyboards.

The entire mixture makes for a great shining moment on an otherwise muddled recording. The two studio tracks are clearer numbers, but 'Mind Games' is the only good one.

  5. This CD blew me away. I wasn't a real Triumph fan before, but after hearing this, I'm wishing they were still around and on tour.

Forget the crybabies who pooh-pooh this CD. It rocks from start to finish, and I'm one picky S.O.B.!!!

1 comments about Lights Out in Tokyo- Live.

  1. This CD is from a show recorded 6/20/92 at Tokyo's Club Citta shortly after UFO finished work on the High Stakes and Dangerous Men album. The live versions of the five songs covered from that album absolutely destroy the studio versions. The band was HOT this night! The remaining tracks are classic UFO tunes from the Lights Out and Obsession period including killer versions of Cherry, Doctor Doctor and Lights Out. The real surprise here and the best kept secret of the rock guitar world is lead guitarist Lawrence Archer. His playing style maintains the melodic Schenker touch but adds the technical horsepower of Yngwie Malmsteen and Eddie VanHalen. The incredible version of Rock Bottom is alone worth the price of this CD and may be the best ever recorded by any incarnation of UFO. It's unfortunate that after turning in the performance of a lifetime, Lawrence parted ways with UFO and basically disappeared when he should have been a superstar guitarist (does anybody know where he went to?). Overall, the performance on this album gives Strangers in the Night a run for it's money and should be in every UFO collection.
