  1. dont be scared by the other reviews.good album for the price.good performace.if you want perfect vocals buy a studio album.other than that i didnt hear any thing totaly awful.sounded pretty tight to me.only dissapointment is i did not know this was a chopped up version of another album.you get what you pay for.

  2. OK. I'll give it a generous 2 stars because musically, it's pretty good. But the vocals?!?! Oh my goodness---the vocals. Worst I have EVER heard. I could sing better. To Steve Walsh I would like to say brother, when it gets this bad, do us all a favor and go get a job in the private sector. At least they include "Dust In The Wind", and bring Kerry Livgren on stage to sing it. Kerry sounds pretty good on it---except for the high notes. Walsh introduces him as "an old friend". That's a laugh. Livgren was and always will be Kansas. The band basically threw him out, due to "artistic differences". Pretty sad when a guy's Christian influences in the music lead the band to pretty much boot him.

If you are going to get some Kansas CDs, get "Leftoverture" or "Point of Know Return". However, if you want to spend $6.98 for a nice coaster, then I'd go with this one.

Oh yeah---did I mention how bad the vocals are on this?

  3. The Emi Special Products release Kansas Live-Dust in the Wind is a trimmed down version of the Live at the Whisky album. Kansas captured live in the early ninties a couple decades past their peak in popularity. For the most part the band is pretty good, with the exception of Steve Walsh's horrible vocals, they should have fired him, he sounds awful, but the rest of the band sounds great, and it is a very enjoyable album. If you want a live recording without overdubbs this would be it.

  4. The short of it: Just hated, I mean HATED this album. The Band had no reason to be togather at this point. Any other Kansas album is a far cry better than this one! Move on.

  5. This album is a cut down re-release of the very poor Live At The Whisky album containing 10 of its 12 tracks. What follows is my review of Live At The Whisky which also applies to this disc by default:

I recently reviewed Kansas 1978 live album Two For The show calling it probably the best live album of all time. And with that pleasant rosy feeling and memory I came to buy Live At The Whisky. If Two For the Show is a candidate for the best of all time then one can only call Live At The Whisky a candidate for the worst. This is a truly awful live performance from a band once noted for great live performances.

My main over-riding criticism, and one that is pertinent to every track on the album is pointed directly at Steve Walsh's voice. Its gone, and not just slightly. He strains, squacks, croaks, grinds and makes himself painfully hoarse trying to reach notes in classic songs he can longer reach and indeed embarrassingly fails to reach upon trying on many occasions. And its painful to listen to how a once great singer has fallen, a long, long way. Walsh once had one of the greatest voices in rock - with Two For The Show proving he could sustain his incredible power and range during concerts and not just the studio. It's very sad but true.

My other main criticism is with the band's performance itself and production. It's a 'going through the motions' performance from a band standing very much in the shadows of the once great spotlight they stood in. And its not helped by the fact that key band members Kerry Livgren and Robbie Steinhardt are missing, although Livgren does make a guest appearance at the very end for Carry On Wayward Son. In fact only a deteriorated Walsh, Williams and Ehart survive from the original line up.

This album came as a great disappointment even though I should have suspected Walsh's vocal ability was finished from his performance on In The Spirit Of Things (see my review on this site).

    Definitely one for hardcore completists.

    Recommendation to avoid.

  1. If you like BTO, get something else. This CD is very noisy and unpolished. Now I like live music as much as the next guy, but this recording is sloppy, and some of the cuts are noisy with too much distortion.

Besides that the band plays their top songs excellently, and the emotional excitement of a live performance is captured on all the tracks (with the exception of Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet which you wouldn't even guess was a live performance).

BTO's music is straight ahead - nothin' fancy or clever. I wouldn't call it "art". It's straight ahead, foot stompin', good time jams. Many of the rhythms are easy to play on the guitar and good for a beginning guitar student to play along with which is why I got this CD. It suits my purposes.

  1. The live version of Little Johnny Jewel is an event. Listen to this to hear the inheritor of the Jimi Hendrix mantle. Listen to this for another world, a dark vision beyond goth or metal. Listen to this for an artist pushing beyond stupid formula into new territory. Listen to this.

  2. What a find! I've always _liked_ Television, but the studio records left me just a wee bit cold. This burns a hole in your spakers. Not just for previous fans. Art-rockers will no doubt like the studio stuff better, but rock-rockers will likely appreciate this more. I'm a bit of a tech-geek and I hate badly engineered records, but I find this eminently listenable. The sound is not necessarily full, but its reasonably crisp. It is a live reocrding after all, and sounds like it. But this should not keep anyone away. Yes, the shorter, quiter, more 'composed' songs like Venus do work better in the album versions. But most of the material here benefits from the looser, more energetic playing. One could say its more passionate, but that doesn't begin to describe it. These guys are playing like their lives are at stake. Even if disc one was a total waste, which it isn't, disc two would be worth more than the price of admission even WITHOUT 'Little Johnny Jewel", and that particular track is priceless. I think this is simply one of the great rock and documents ever, right up there with The Who Live at Leeds.

  3. If you havent heard Television and want to learn the origins of todays and tomorrows rock, than buy this record. Everyone seems to only mention Tom Verlaines work, but its the virtuosity of the guitar interplay that occurs between Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine (2 geniuses of the guitar) that make this band extraordinary (and Tom Verlains haunting vocals).

I am amazed by their last studio effort in '92 which almost surpasses Marquee Moon and Adventure. I saw them live in '92 at Roseland in NYC and was amazed how fresh and new this band still sounded. No other band compares. Kudo's to Bono for mentioning Television and Patti Smith as their main influences during this years rock and roll hall of fame. I wish other bands would admit their ideas were borrowed if not stolen from these legendary bands and composers.

Catch them while you can and buy their albums!

  4. This is simply one of the greatest recorded live performances I've ever heard and I spend a good deal of my life listening to live music in person and on CD.

The downer is that the sound quality is pretty poor in spots, but does get better on some tracks. Consequently, listening to this on headphones definitely beats listening to it in your car. In short, the sound quality will annoy you at times, but if you listen carefully, I believe you'll find it well worth it.

On "The Blow-Up" you hear a band that is literally fearless. It's a bit like watching four incredibly gifted artists sprint back and forth on a tightrope. Not only is the collective performance incredible, but Verlaine's material ranks with the finest in rock history. Yes, the guitars are awesome, but the rhythm section of Fred Smith and Billy Ficca is equally incredible.

Buy Marquee Moon first (everyone should own a copy of that), but get this too to hear what Television were capable of live.

If you can find a copy, I'd also highly recommend Television - Live At The Old Waldorf: San Francisco, 6/29/78. This disc is a much shorter show, but it was professionally recorded and the sound quality is top notch. The performance is excellent, but perhaps not quite as incendiary as on "The Blow-Up."

Sadly, Rhino Handmade only issued 5,000 copies of "Live At the Old Waldorf," so you'll have to do some hunting on Ebay, etc. However, if you love great rock and roll, it's worth the trouble and expense.

  5. The first Television album is all tension and restraint -- beautiful guitars slashing at each other over Verlaine's wavery voice and a thumping rhythm section. "Marquee Moon" is the sound of a world class garage band, and one of the great guitar bands of all rock music playing majestic music, nearly losing control at each curve, but catching themselves before they fell apart.

This album strays at every opportunity. It's loud and indulgent. The playing is sometimes ridiculously sloppy, but when the band gets it right, as with the 15 minutes of "Little Johnny Jewel," it's as breathtaking as anything on "Marquee Moon."

I still prefer the studio versions of every song on this album to the live ones, but this is the perfect companion to "Marquee Moon." Even though the album was recorded after "Marquee Moon" was released, it works well as a backdrop for that album. Compared to the insane experimentation here, the solo on the studio version of "Marquee Moon" sounds tame and structured. The full-blown feakout of "Friction" is compressed into a tight single in the studio.

Which isn't to say the album doesn't stand on its own. As a double live album with low quality sound, it doesn't have much going for it in principle, but the guitars are fantastic. Very raw, very loud, and a lot of fun. Any fan of rock music owes it to themselves to buy "Marquee Moon" first (THAT'S the essential album), but this works well for those of us who can't get enough of a good thing.

  1. This fifteen track live compilation, had apparently come from two different shows. With one reportedly being a Vancouver '74 shindig.'I'm A...' is one of the BETTER sounding archive live Dolls recordings. Two covers I felt they did rather well were Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man" and the Beatle's "Dizzy Miss Lizzie".Of course the Doll's original material here smokes as well, like "Personality Crisis","Babylon","Jet Boy" among others.Good mid-'70's proto punk to thoroughly enjoy here.

  1. looking for this live cd,
    led zeppelin knebworth 79.
    can anyone help?

  2. The performance of All Right Now was sloppy. Otherwise would have been 5 stars.

  3. Back when bands were somehow able to make live recordings full of surprises, excitement, and occasional group improvisation, this one is a diamond in the rough. I've owned the vinyl for well nigh 25 years now, and the utterly unadorned sounds of the guitar, the bass, the drums, plus the howling voice of Paul Rodgers - why, it's primal blues rock at its sparest ... and most devastating. Andy Fraser's bass lines are lithe and kinetic. Paul Kossoff wrenches notes from the neck of his Les Paul in a style that still sets him apart from all who have followed. He left us far too soon. Only complaint is the haphazard rendition of "All Right Now" - (they were probably sick of it by then).

  4. Always a great live band - there should be more live issue

  5. excellent live recording of this band in its prime sound quality very good for live very little overdubing song selection and sequence is excellent giving the live power and energy this quartet posessed one of my hall of fame cd's

  1. By far this is one of the top 5 live albums. The Outlaws were simple the best southern rock band. Skynyrd was raw and gritty, the outlaws were precice, had "Eagle" type harmonies, and the double and triple guitar work is unbelievable. If you like rock, southern rock and a small bit of country balled up into one band, the Outlaws are for you. This live album has all of their great hits from their fantastic 1st 3 albums. The audio recording makes you feel like the you are in the 1st row of the show. The live "Green Grass & High Tides" blows any version of "Freebird " away.

  2. This album puts on display the energy and power of the Outlaws live to wonderful effect.

  3. One of the best live albums of all time. The Outlaws always were a better live band then their cds made them sound like. Much heavier and harder sounding live. Not that Im complaining they are one of my favorite all time bands live or album....

  4. A good CD with a later incarnation of the band but, with 3 original members. I say farewell to Hughie and Billy by listening to this great CD.It 's a testimony to their talent.

  5. This is the Outlaws best album! The more I listen to it, to more I enjoy it- from the great percusion to the truly amazing guitars. I have a hard time with some of the folksy, California country music vibe of some of the studio albums- but thats not a problem with this live recording. If you only buy one Outlaw album- this is the one to get!

  1. Super album. I've had it since vinyl. However, please note that this album will be available in march with four previously unreleased tracks at a much more reasonable price. Shame on this gouging seller!!

  2. I have been telling everyone for the past 20 years, that this is probably THE greatest live recording ever (including Live at Leeds). When Zevon shouts "Only take this medicine as prescribed...I'll sleep when I'm dead" it gives you gooseflesh. Many Live records just don't live up to the hype...this one does!

  3. My heart broke when Warren passed.
I own every one of his CDs.
This was actually the second LP Record I ever bought, in around 1981?
    Wore it OUT.
I've actually bought boot-legs of this since it was never released in the US. (ok, I do have it on Cassette, but it's nearly worn out!)
Thank GOD we can get a clean CD!!!!!, even if it IS from Japan! (can't read the liner (Japanese), is that lyrics? COOOL, cuz the LP never had any more than the photo montage!)

This is one of the best CDs of ALL TIME.

Warren was truely great (IS, since he lives in all of us, his devoted fans!)

Song writing and energy and lyrical message = 100% GREAT stuff.

    Long Live the Original Bad-boy

    Love ya' Warren.
    Sleep well, you earned it.

  4. Couldn't wait to get my hands on this CD. Had to get the Japanese version; audio, is probably a bit better. Never released in the states on CD. Anyway, worth every penny; THIS DISC ROCKS! Turn it up; download to your Ipod; put it in your car; just PLAY IT LOUD!

  5. The CD Stand in the Fire by Warren Zevon heralds back to a time of my youth of thirty years ago. It is an in concert product showcasing his unabridged version of Send Lawyers,Guns, and Money which is why I bought it. Also on the CD is his Werewolves of London to be played at Halloween as a rite of passage. He was an icon of Classic Rock and Roll and underappreciated. The price I paid was more than I normally agreed to pay for any one CD. It would have rated five stars if it weren't for the money it cost me.
