  1. I really like this CD alot; The live venue gives some of their catalog a little extra punch! Hard to believe half of these are live since they are so right on the money--it's almost like listening to a studio album at times. Nice addition of some lesser known Eagles tunes like Seven Bridges Road, Saturday Night, and All Night Long; Plus the addition of Life's Been Good only helps. great sound and great playing all across the board. The extended sax solo at the end of The Long Run is one of the best sax solos I have heard in a long time. A great look at a talented band in their earlier days. A must have for fans! Joe Walsh and Don Felder tear it up guitar-wise...or as much as you can tear it up in an Eagles song!

  2. Greatest band of all time! What else can I say. Wish it was a DVD!

  3. The Eagles' seventh album Eagles Live was released in November of 1980.
By 1980, The Eagles were going through a schizophrenic time. The band had another chart-topping album out of The Long Run but inner tensions between drummer Don Henley and guitarist Glenn Frey reached fever pitch. The strains of keeping up with success were taking a toll on messieurs Henley, Frey, Don Felder, Joe Walsh and Timothy B Schmit.
Before splitting up, the band decided to release a live album recorded from its 1979/80 Long Run Tour with some tracks recorded from the pre-release tour in support of Hotel California from November, 1976.
The 1980 portions consists of spirited versions of "Hotel California" which is arguably better than its studio counterpart with Don Felder's excellent Gibson double neck guitar and Joe Walsh's Fender Telecaster work, a rocking "Heartache Tonight", a soulful "I Can't Tell You Why", a soul-tinged "The Long Run" featuring some excellent alto sax work from Phil Kenzie (whom played on Al Stewart's Year of the Cat and Time Passages albums), a laid-back unplugged "Saturday Night', a stellar "Life in the Fast Lane" and the closing extended rocking "Take it Easy" which is better than its studio counterpart with some excellent guitar work from Walsh at the end.
The 1980 portion also included the band's take on two of Walsh's solo tracks "Life's Been Good" (arguably better than the original) and the then new track "All Night Long" which buried the sterile sounding version on the Urban Cowboy Soundtrack. Lastly, it featured the acoustic "Seven Bridges Road" which was a country number the band would play in rehearsal (see the 1977 Hotel California concert film for proof) and would be the band's last hit for 14 years.
The songs recorded from 1976 featured "New Kid In Town" and "Wasted Time" which were at the time the performances were recorded unreleased, an unEarthly version of "Take It To The Limit" with original bass player Randy Meisner hitting an A flat to F Sharp near the end and given a STANDING OVATION for it. Lastly, "Doolin-Dalton Reprise II" was an orchestral interlude to "Desperado" which was a good version.
Eagles Live upon release hit #7 on the album charts and quickly hit Platinum status. Millions have been sold since then (I helped the cause when I was 8 when my folks got me this on cassette as a Christmas present and then on CD and now the remastered CD).
    Recommended!

  4. The Eagles Live cd is and always has been a Complete Rip-Off! Warner Brothers has been raking it in on the Eagles catalog for decades and has only continued the tradition with the remasters (see my review of Hotel California). This is the original version from way back in 1989. They did not have 80 minute cd's back then, only 74 minute discs. That I understand , but this has also been remastered and released AGAIN on 2 discs! There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for this to have been released on 2 compact discs except that it allows Warner Brothers to demand a higher 2 cd price!

I vowed to NEVER buy this release, even though I own all the other standard Eagles remasters. They do sound much better, so it is worth it to me. But, you get NOTHING NEW. Same ol' booklets, same standard gray jewel cases, etc.

HERE's The GOOD NEWS - I just bought this at a local SAM's Club for only...$12.88. I could not believe the price. And, it is the newer remastered version in a standard double slim jewel case. It says right on the back, "remastered by so and so at Sterling Sound 1999".

I do hope that sometime in the near future, Rhino records or Universal Chronicals will put out a "Deluxe Edition" of this release with more tracks from that era and fill up those 2 compact discs. Until then...

  5. This is a fine recording of a great band. However I cannot recommend it and hence it only gets 2 stars.

The reason for this is that you might have thought that with an album cover which says EAGLES LIVE this would actually be a live a album. But no its not, in fact if you read the credits you'll find that there are overdubs added. So it should be called EAGLES LIVE (EXCEPT FOR THE OVERDUBS WHICH WE ADDED AFTER THE CONCERTS). Now if they called it that I probably would have given it 4 stars.

Shame, because the recordings are good, but if I wanted a studio quality recording, I'd have bought the original studio albums. Live is live, it can't be almost live unless its advertised as such!

  1. This review is for disc three only. See a separate review I did for disc one. CD # 3 is from a German gig that took place on October 17, 1972. Have to wonder if this is the entire concert, as it has just three songs. Sound quality has a few flaws, but still very acceptable. The thirty-minute "Rich Tapestry Of Life" is probably the best cut here. As if you're a major Crimson nut or even a completist (which I'm neither) you would obviously get more out of "Exiles" and "Larks Tongues In Aspic (Part 1)" than I did. A decent live, previously unreleased vintage concert from one of the most 'out-standing' progressive bands left over from the '70's.

  2. Other than this Japanese import, the only way to obtain these live recordings is to join the KC Collectors Club. The price of this import is actually just slightly more than a years' subscription which gets you a CD every other month. These early (1st three) Club releases are amongst the coolest things they've put out so far. The '69 Marquee Club show is a little rough in the sound department, especially it's bonus track "Trees" (18 minutes long)which is barely listenable but still fascinating (Fripp warned us about the sound). The other two are much better sounding although Jacksonville '72 suffers from overload distortion being a soundboard cassette that was recorded too loud. It's still a good document of the Islands era touring band in action. The final CD, Bremen Beat Club '72, may very well be the best Club release; it's the only good quality recording of the short lived line-up with eccentric genius percussionist Jamie Muir, who can be heard in all his glory on this excellent (German TV) recording. Bremen Beat Club gives new meaning to the word improvisation. This box is a good way to get these CD's if you missed them when the club offered them in '98-'99....

  1. Performance art at its most decadent, the 2-CD set chronicles the destruction of The Stooges and the fall of Iggy (Pop) Stooge from personal demons.

Bolstered with additional material, this infamous live "bootleg" from more than 30 years ago was initially only available as an import album.

The two concerts chronicled - October 1973 and the band's final gig in February 1974 - is a sonic implosion due to any number of issues. The end is near, as a crazed Iggy implores the raucous crowd to throw more ice, eggs, beer bottles and jelly beans. The band limps along with muzak, sounding the closing chords for a wild ride that had gone so wrong.

This is all too real....and dangerous when breaking glass is the soundscape.

  2. The band is killing it and Iggy's between song banter is hilarious. This kinda stuff just doesn't happen at shows anymore.

Unless, of course, it's a Mighty High show. Check out Mighty High...In Drug City.

  3. It's fun to hear the Spinal Tap moments where he baits the crowd (once), but this was a so-so night for Iggy and Co. After slogging through a half a dozen similar CD's, it's clear that these guys got a lot of help in the studio.People who like the legendary rep of this disc would do better to just buy the tee shirt.

  4. This is basically a legitimized bootleg album so the sound quality isn't the best. It is however, a landmark in Rock 'n' Roll/Punk history. The Ig did in fact issue a public challenge to a local M/C club, but it was the Scorpions and not the Angels. Turns out that one of the Scorpions jumped on stage at the Rock 'n' Roll Farm the week before and punched Iggy in the face, but enough of that. This is history, if you're a collector and a punk, get this 'cause you'll dig it. Cut it a little slack and remember the times (and the old Michigan Palace...what a great place to see a show that was). This isn't a listen to all the time type of recording, it's a historical document that needs to be appreciated for what it is. If you are the type that can't do this, this one's not for you. If you're from Detroit and you don't have it...I think it may be a felony. All others check local laws before ordering.

  5. I have only been listening to the Stooges for maybe 4 or 5 months. I first purchased Raw Power and then The Stooges and Funhouse. This band is great and I was looking for more to listen to so I turned to this. When I first heard this yesterday, I was blown away. Though the mix is God awful, the energy and power that made the studio albums so great is definatly present in this. If you LOVE the Stooges and Iggy Pop and you are looking for more, I recommend this, but only if you REALLY want more. If your not that into the Stooges than this is NOT for you. O and if you only like The Stooges and Funhouse and don't like Raw Power (because the music is a little different), then you probably won't like this.

    And Iggy's comments are funny.

5 comments about Heart Greatest Hits: Live.

  1. This was CBS' first compilation of Heart material, and the result is unique among the many 'greatest hits' releases that have come since. Maybe it was because of the digital remastering (a relatively new thing at that time). Maybe it was the running order: going from 'Silver Wheels' into 'Crazy On You' in the same manner as they were doing in their live shows really gives Nancy a showcase. Maybe it was the sheer power of 'Mistral Wind' which only increases in the live setting. Certainly it wasn't 'Hit Single' and 'Strange Euphoria' which were blessedly dropped when converted to CD. Maybe it was the original band (yes I know Roger isn't on the live tracks) at its height before the slide of 'Private Audition' and 'Passionworks' and the revamping of the band into 80's hair, cleavage, and power ballads. Whatever it is, nothing sounds like this disc, and it's worth having in your collection even if you've got all the discs that led up to it.

  2. The description of this cd is very very misleading. I figured the title
Heart "Greatest Hits:Live", would mean all songs were live but only a select few are and there not even great hits IMO

  3. Don't get me wrong, they looked a lot better in the 80's with stilletos and all that make-up, and puffy hair that could raise any skyscraper, but old Heart is a hell of a lot better than their newer stuff. I thought they sounded like they meant it like: Crazy On You, Barracuda, Straight On, Heartless (my favorite from them). Yep these vixens who were compared to Led Zeppelin as a hell of a rock band, boy oh boy, pretty damn close I might add. Anyways this album kicks serious butt.

  4. "Strange Euphoria" was the one of the "new" songs on this recording but it was deleted from the CD of this late 1980 release. Call Strange Euphoria" what you want, but it is a cool song and sounds like Ann and Nancy are on a LSD trip while singing. It was a great song which was not replicated on 1997's Whirlygig even though Heart tried.

The cover sports one of my favorite photos of Ann Wilson with the stand-off-ish, jacked up, over-confident look.

  5. Greatest Hits Live originally recorded in 1980 was one of my early CD purchases during early 90s but I happened to miss simply because it was dubbed as "Live" and I thought that was not I had been looking for. (At that time I was looking for Definitive collection of Heart including 80s hits). Time has changed and I happened to uncover this CD from the heap of my dusted CD collections.

It has nine best tracks from their early works such as Dreamboat Annie(1976), Little Queen(1977), Magazine(1978), Dogs and Butterfly(1978), Bebe Le Strange(1980). On the back jacket name of the albums the each tracks are from are shown. Then the album become live recording collection during August and September 1980 tour. Live recording of BEBE LE STRANGE takes place at the stage side where the chat among members before the show can be heard. Interesting intrigue. TELL IT LIKE IT IS is unusually not live but studio recording and became single cut from this greatest CD. And then the ending live performance is LED ZEPPELIN classic ROCK'N ROLL. Alas, it shows their rock spirit.
Yes, it misses PRIVATE AUDITION(1982) and PASSIONWORK material to be the early Heart collection. But the timing for the release was excellent because it was made when HEART was at their artistic height.

Verdict: It is no doubt Heart fans' essential and 70s rock fans' paradise. Showing well how HEART had been during their early prime.
Rating: 88 out of 100. Well-edited (particularly Silver Wheel and Crazy On You combination just as their live performance) and consistent. Transition from studio recording part and live recording part has been done excellently.
Recommended for: Every Heart fan. Lots of 70s rock fans and the appreciators of recent Heart releases such as Desire Walks On(1993) and Jupiters Darling(2004).

  1. EXCELENT!!! In response to the review of this CD by "A Music Fan"........Please, give me a break! Anyone who enjoys Blood, Sweat And Tears will enjoy this concert. And if your a musician, you will enjoy it that much more! Turn it up, sit back and ENJOY!!!

  2. Evidently, someone turned on a microphone to record the concert tour following up B, S & T's least successful album ever, "Nuclear Blues". The positive aspect of this album is that it contains an upbeat and punchy version of "Gimme That Wine" originally from the "Brand New Day" album. "Trouble in Mind" and "Shake a Hand" are also worthwhile. Unfortunately, the group degrades the more prominent and familiar tracks by compressing them into a medley. The "Nuclear Blues" tracks are regrettably performed in their entirety. I suppose there is nothing we can do about those paronoia nuclear blues. If you are looking for a great B, S & T live album, seek out "Live and Improvised" recorded after the release of their "New City" album. P.S. Does anybody know how many times DCT has recorded a version of "I'll Drown In My Own Tears?" I count four. If at first you don't succeed . . .
