  1. I've been a fan of the good Doctor's for years, and I *still* think this is the best recording he has ever made. Great piano, backed up by a good traditional jazz band, plus a decent electric guitar.

3 comments about This Is Buddy Guy!.

  1. i dig buddy guy, a lot. his playing style is second to none. many guitarists have cited him as one of the best. pure energy. the man can turn from rock to blues to jazz to soul in 4 strums of his guitar. i love buddy's voice. the man knows when to shout at you and knows when to whisper to you to draw you in. buddy is the preacher in the blues revival church. if you listen to this one, you will become a quick convert to buddy's congregation.

  2. Don't get me wrong okay? Good music is here. 40 minutes of show. First off there are many kinds of buddy guy music. The great Delta Bluesman Son House once was asked to comment on a Buddy Guy show he watched live the night him and buddy jammed together alone. House called it '' Monkey Junk''. Well that show was probably similar to this. I like it, others may not. It is not straight blues and there is probably only two or three real blues here straight up if you have a narrow scope.[ I got my eyes on you, is really just Let Me Love you baby.] And if you do, okay it is all up to taste. This isn't the Buddy guy Guitar show either. This is buddy Guy the showman. He does play some mean solos here [few] and it is really more about having a show- a performance. The loud horns the funk rythms. The showy vocals. This isn't really a blues record. The three stars comes from the fact that he really didn't give a great guitar performance which I think is what his fans want. This is not a bad record to stress, but a different record. It is like James Brown [ only not as good ] when it hits those funky jams like I'm not the Best. Fever is great but barely any or, now that I think about it maybe no solo Guitar playing at all on that one. This album just isn't essential to me anyway. It is good and I know how versatile Buddy is so this isn't about pigeon holing him. I just wouldn't buy it twice. It doesn't seem that Brilliant. I'm a fan of Buddy in many ways, but not really this one. I like Rock Buddy, Electric Blues Buddy, Extremely electric blues buddy, and acoustic buddy. But Funk soul show-little guitar not high on lyrics buddy is not my favorite side of his incredible talents. Besides, right now Amazon[.com] doesn't even give it a discount price, It's not really a deal if you ask me.

  3. This is what it sounded like to hear Buddy play live in the late 80s and early 90s (when,he peaked, IMO). The first half of this CD is the best, peaking with "Fever" and "Knock on Wood", a song he used to play as he walked through the audience, up balcomies, and even one in NJ outside in the rain to fans who didn't have tickets! Buy this disk BEFORE "Live, The Real Deal". "Live, The Real Deal" is NOT the real deal, as Buddy NEVER sounds that way (or has the SNL Band back him up). "Live - This Is Buddy Guy" is the REAL Real Deal!

  1. This album is a true representation of Stan Webb's Chicken Shack live set even today, I have seen them as recently as June 2003 and the set still contains some of this material. This is one of the best live recordings I have come across and is a mix of true blues, and rock / blues. The guitar work from both Stan the man and Gary Davis is a pleasure to hear, supported by a strong bass and drum section that is rock solid all the way through.
This album is well worth buying as an introduction to a very sadly overlooked guiter hero who's explosive and soulful style equals most of the top guitar names, also this is a live act well worth seeing for pure power blues at its best.

  2. This is a very nice album by Stan Webb's Chicken Shack. It serves as an introduction to the band, since it contains some old classics, along with blues songs. And if you like a nice guitar work, you'll enjoy Stan Webb's guitar playing. He's an almost unknow guitar hero, and it's a shame that he's not at the guitarist's Pantheon with Clapton, Green and the other british blues players. Listen to it!

  1. Have seen LC & the Nightcats several times; they are a brilliant live band. I don't believe the material included here touches on that brilliance.

  2. To the reviewer who knocked this release for only having two worthwhile tracks: SHUT UP! You don't have a clue, pal! This is an excellent CD. All of Little Charlie's releases are great, and this is no exception. My personal favorite on "Captured Live" is "Smart Like Einstein". For me, there are a couple of tunes that aren't all that great, but overall it is just fine. Don't pay any attention to the editorial review, that guy is a bonehead!

  3. Little Charlie Baty is an absolutely fabulous guitar player. 'Ten Years Ago' would have be to one of the best guitar pieces I have heard. 'Rain' also shows his talent. Unfortunately, the rest is a totally different style, being bouncy, humorous but much less intense, and only bordering on blues as I like it. However, the above two tracks still make it a worthwhile purchase.

  4. Give it a listen. They are HOT! The bass sound is one of thebest, and may be the best I've ever heard.

  5. This is a high quality live album with great sound and energy. It doesn't matter what track you listen to, the group displays a high threshold of talent. No matter what you call their music, or how you label them specifically, the fact is, these guys are cookin! They have a big bass sound here (not taking anything away from anyone else in the group) for whatever reason (mix, indivdual talent, etc.) complimenting the music without getting lost in the background as the bass in most music. Instead of the bass being "featured", from time to time, it's there on every track. You can't help but move, or boogie listening to this album and the only way to describe them here is that they are HOT!

  1. As familiar as I am with many talented Blues artists in the Seattle, Portland areas, I never really heard a band from the northwest that captured that Raw, Hard, Chicago sound (which Muddy Waters, Junior Wells and Magic Slim have down pat!), that makes your skin crawl; until I heard The Vipers with Eagle Park Slim! And from Eugene no less (need to get more in tune with their scene!). Some of my favorites are "Born under a Bad Sign", "Viper Band Boogie", "Road Runner Blues" and when you really want the raw, gritty stuff "Deep down in Florida" gets you into the groove. One of my favorites at The Crazy Coyote Blues Power Show at KYNR in central Washington state.
