  1. The tracks on this disc were recorded live at a nightclub in Peoria Heights, Illinois in 1979. Luther skillfullly reworks B.B.King's "Thrill is Gone" then adds his interpretation of Junior Wells "Messing with the Kid". He also throws in some of his own songs and "You're Gonna Need Me" is my favorite of those. The next to the last band-and my favorite- is "Cat Blues", Luther's funny tribute to the Caterpillar Tractor company (based in Peoria)and his own troubles working there. "Cat Blues" gives the best sense of the magic that Luther Allison worked upon his audience as he is cheered on by the audience, some of whom worked at Caterpillar themselves. If money is tight, I might suggest blues lovers download only the two songs, "Cat Blues" and "Thrill is Gone".

  2. Luther died in '97 after living for years in Paris. I have always felt that he was the most soulful of the Blues guitar greats. Every album is a watershed.

  3. So sad to hear of Luther's death in '77. Now he's jammin' with the Alberts. This album will be loved by devotees of extra-high-energy rhythm & blues. He was a hard act to follow. This disc is raw: much better than some of his more recent, over-produced stuff.

  1. Anyone looking for the real thing, the delta blues done by the real delta bluesmen, this compilation of acoustic performances at the Newport Folk Festival in the late 50's to early 60's is it. The old guys had their mothballs dusted off and were trotted out for the new, pre-rock 'n' roll folkies of the time, and a revival was born. Now, in the new millennium, this stuff sounds as fresh and hot (or cool, as the case may be) as it did in the decades before it was recorded. These guys aren't around anymore, but you can still listen to the REAL blues, as it was, as it is, as it should be.

  2. What an outstanding album. Give this to your great friends.

  1. Great Blues CD this really howl's the music is awesome and the vocals are great. One of my favorites. One of the smokettes sounds alot like Janis Joplin and the musicianship is first class. If you love the blues this will please most everyone. The Horn section kicks and every song is enjoyable and for a live recording this was mixed very well. Definitely worth buying. Only wish I could find more music by this group.

  1. I had this on album for many years and was happy to find it on CD. Of all my blues albums, this is one of my favorites. Real down home blues played on a slightly out-of-tune piano in what sounds like someone's basement. Billy Boy Arnold's harp and backing vocals are the prefect compliment.

  1. You already know this is an awesome album! I've just got to say the review that starts off by saying..."To start with, I DON'T like country music." Obviously a lame thing to say out loud, especially when everyone can read what you've written for years, and years, and years...

  2. Get the CD. Delbert McClinton's a strong blue eyed soul singer. This live CD's got some serious rocked out blues. The backup band's great, instrumentation is solid. Plus, the engineering's very good, you get just enough 'live' feel without an overflow of the annoying sussurrus from the audience.

    Favorites:

"Shaky Ground" okay, I love every version of this song, this one's no exception

"B Movie Boxcar Blues" I heard this song first on this CD and just could not get it off repeat. Great tale of a traveling man's escapades.

"Going back to Louisiana" another great blues standard.

    Rebecca Kyle, August 2008

  3. To start with, I DON'T like country music. With that said, this CD rocks. I had to try a Delbert McClinton CD after listening to Imus drone on daily about Delbert McClinton and started out with this CD. I am particularly a fan of tight bands and they just don't get tighter than his. The twangy ones I can do without but overall this CD rates a 6 on a scale of 5. And if you get the chance to see him and his band live, well, don't miss it. Pay any money. You will not be diappointed.

  4. For lovers of good clean rock and roll with a bluesy flair, this album is one of the best buys around. Backed up by a terrific band, including a fabulous horn section, McClinton runs through his own classics like "Givin' It Up For Your Love",and "Back To Louisiana" as well as covers like Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams To Remember". McClinton's raunchy voice and energetic style prove that he sets the standard for live perfomances. The album's only drawback is that at less than 40 minutes in length, the party is over before you are ready for the fun to end. Nonetheless, it remains one of my favorite albums, bar none. An absolute must have for any rock and roll fan.

  5. Although live, this is an excelent recording and I think that a live performance is the only way to hear Delbert at his best. I also have the Ultimate Collection CD, which it is not the Ultimate collection, it is missing Standing on Shaky ground and several other great tracks.

  1. what nobody has reviewed this CD yet???

This dutch guitarist is from the very top of the electric guitarist shelf.

Excellent voice and some superb guitar work. And man can this guy play the guitar. Not out to dazzle and show off, instead the guitar work is true to each song and makes many emotional statements to amplify the tunes. You like the guitar / blues / ROCK/ intelligent compositions etc??? Don't hesitate and buy this.

    Think Hendrix meets Pat Travers

one of my biggest gripes about CD's and esp many blues, is the recording is not very strong, even when you turn up the volume to 10 and its still not playing loud, thats lame. But not this cd! I have to keep it about halfway, and thats very loud, if I want to turn it to 9, sometimes thats fun, when your powerwalking or have a party, its flat out LOUD! and good loud.
