  1. LIVE AT SEVENTY FIVE
    By
    Big George Brock

Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art, 2007

Live at Seventy Five is a high octane, feel good, rocking blues album that not only promises to deliver, it does. It's Big George Brock at his best on vocals and harmonica, backed by a superb group of musicians, including Riley Coatie, Sr. and Bill Abel on guitars, Barry Bays on bass and Riley Coatie, Jr. on drums.

The album is recorded live at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale. Sonny Payne of Radio KFFA introduces Big George, who leads off with "Cut You Loose," followed by nine more of the finest blues tracks available anywhere. Five of the songs are original numbers and five are outstanding covers. Every song in this collection is a winner.

Of Brock's own compositions, the haunting "Bring the Blues Back Home," is unforgettable. "Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters carried `em up north. They passed away and left them all alone. They knocked on my door this morning, said`Big George, come on, take us back home.'"

Of the covers, "Forty-Four Blues" (Burnett) and "Jody" (Baker/Wilson/Davis) are dynamite. I defy anyone to sit still through these tunes.

This is a top notch CD from start to finish that you will enjoy hearing time and again, a definitive album from an original Mississippi bluesmen who is still one of the best in the business. Five stars and two thumbs up for Big George Brock and Live at Seventy Five.

  1. this isnt the best sounding cd ive ever heard {not really that bad}but being a huge michael bloomfield fan i had to have it.yes, michael bloomfield is on guitar here.i read somewhere that it was from 1977.but anyway mike has some pretty good chops here.besides, its a fun cd.

  2. The annotation on this Australian 1997 release is worthless, and the sound is mediocre, lacking depth and, well, clarity.
    So don't buy it, eh?
Well, if you're a casual listener just looking for "Shake Rattle & Roll" and "Roll 'Em Pete", this is not the place to start. But if you're into Big Joe Turner, you will definitely want to pick up this album.

The sound is really not state-of-the-art, and audiophile will undoubtedly wrinkle their nose at this. But the music itself is really great...Joe Turner is is excellent form, delivering powerful yet seemingly effortless renditions of some of his best songs. Over the course of an hour, Turner does a terrific, dignified "Stormy Monday Blues", a great "Shake Rattle & Roll ", a gritty "TV Mama" with a prominent (and unfortunately unnamed) guitarist who does his best to emulate Elmore James, and a tremendous reading of the juicy R&B-stomper "Hide & Go Seek". "Honey Hush" and "Chicken & The Hawk" are here as well, and the band is tight yet supple, anchored by a great (unnamed) pianist and a small horn ensemble. And there is none of the meandering which plagues some of Turner's live recordings; both he and the orchestra are totally focused.

Great stuff, and Big Joe Turner's big, smooth baritone is in top form. It still isn't enough for a fifth star, not with this kind of fidelity (or lack thereof), but it's great stuff all the same.

  1. L. A. is a good man, a good blues man, he has it goin' on. that's all. the fact that he plays right and left handed makes his sound unique. he can do everyone, ala buddy, but IMO L.A. is a consumate bluesman, and is at his best doing L.A. if you are a blues lover, or would like to be. give this man a listen. "She can't be satisfied" but you can, and will with this CD. Get it Now and give it a listen, see if you don't agree.

  2. I happened to stop by a club in the City of San Juan Capistrano last night and was treated to a surprise performance by LA Jones. It was a great night of music. This guy can really play a guitar!
