  1. Mick Abrahams was the guitarist for Jethro Tull on their first lp. He then quit the group to form Blodwyn Pig another blues/jazz influenced progressive rock group. The group broke up and he recorded a couple of solo albums and then retired from the music business. Recently he has began to play and record again. This particular disc was recorded live in 1993. It sounds as if it was recorded in a club. I have to say that Mick Abrahams guitar playing on this album is astonishing. He can more that hold his own with other more famous British blues rock guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor and Stan Webb. He has lost none of his skills during his retirement. The album features a combination of cover tunes and songs written by Mick himself. Among the highlights is a cover of "Cat's Squirrel" which also appeared on the first Jethro Tull album "This Was". His playing segues effortlessly through a number of guitar styles. He is also adept at playing slide guitar. His slide guitar playing is featured on "Billy The Kid" and "Dead Man's Hill". This disk has the feel of a long lost album from the late sixties British blues rock boom. The only problem with the album is that the synthesizer becomes annoying at times. The band would have been better served to stick to either piano or organ which are more traditional blues instruments than the synthesizer. If this disk is any indication of what is to come then the unjustly obscure Mick Abrahams is back and better than ever.

  1. that's right. howlin wolf with a great band-the wolf gang. they are cookin!.the sound is very good, mono, but really no hiss and instruments come through quite well for live recording in 1973. Wolf sings only on 4 songs but that is almost 26 minutes. the rest of the songs (cd is about 65 minutes) are very good and band is great.

  2. Howlin' Wolf sings only FOUR songs on this album. The other songs are instrumentals or are sung by other bandmembers, including Detroit Junior and Eddie Shaw. Those guys are good, and I have their records, too, but I wanted Wolf here. I gave it the second star for the pictures. Recorded in Cambridge, Mass.

2 comments about Leadbelly: A Tribute.

  1. LEADBELLY: A TRIBUTE is a transcription of a concert that took place at the Hunter College Assembly Hall (New York City), on March 15, 1976. Besides vintage recorded narration and music by Huddie Ledbetter himself, appearing on stage were Arlo Guthrie, the Lunenberg Travelers, Pete Seeger, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee and Alan Lomax. The program consists of songs written and/or popularized by Leadbelly.

Sound quality of this over 30 year-old folk concert is quite good and the performances are competent.

  2. Obviously, when you die you have to stop making records (unless you're Jimi Hendrix, but that's another story). And the only way to keep your songs alive is to make sure that your pals keep singing them. This concert, recorded around 1977, brings together some of Leadbelly's friends and acquaintances, who then pay tribute to the man by basically phoning in their performances.

We get decent, but not stellar performances from Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, who by this time were pretty much sick of each other and on the verge of breaking up. Sonny introduces "Poor Howard" by telling a story that even Leadbelly once said was wrong; Pete Seeger, an old friend, appears to be embellishing the stories he tells, too. His performances of "In the Pines" and "Bourgeois Blues" are pretty good, though.

The only really great performances here belong to Arlo Guthrie. Always a showman, and clearly standing in for his late father (since he's way too young to have any kind of recollection of Leadbelly himself), he works the audience with "The Grey Goose" and keeps things bouncing along with "On a Monday." He then stays at the piano for the obligatory group finale with all the performers present.

If you collect any of these artists, then by all means buy this. But otherwise, get a real Leadbelly album.

2 comments about Attack of the Atomic Guitar.

  1. This is a wonderful album. U.P. Wilson plays hot and fast Texas blues. He will make you understand, where Stevie Ray came from. Wilson is the blueprint, Vaughan modelled himself after.
Paul Otra and his Kingpins back up Wilson in great manner. Wonderful harmonica play and okay singing, but mostly it is U.P. Wilson, who tears it up. Just listen to his "Hideaway", better than any other, including Freddie!

  2. A great guitarist he has a style all his own. Stevie Ray Vaughan learned some great things from him, like playing the guitar with one hand. He is a great song writer and fine vocalist. This is his best it is also recorded live in England, also try all his other albums except (On My Way) this one is kind of weak. Buy (Wild Texas) guitar if you can find it, this is very hard to find. But i find Attack Of The Atomic Guitar to be his best.
