  1. This is the man. This is one of the last true blue blues guitarists left on the planet. This CD is a recording of a live performance of Buddy Guy at his best.

He introduces the album by saying that it may not be the best album but that it would be the first album that he "ever got on down". He calls it "Alley Music". He doesn't waste any time playing "art rock". His small back up band (that includes his brother Phil Guy - an excellent guitarist) lays down a funky blues beat while he punishes the strings with licks that will weaken the knees.

During a brief mellow moment in the music, the listener can hear an obviously drunk woman in the background making editorial comments. Buddy says to her, "Take it easy momma." It's the atmosphere of a small, smoke filled blues bar. You can almost smell the ribs, catfish and gumbo cooking. This is our culture.

Get this CD, close your eyes and take a trip with Buddy to downtown Chicago or to the Louisiana bayou.

  2. I have never seen a better show than a Buddy Guy show. He is the most amazing showmen around. On this CD he plays Live in Chicago, and the fire is there for sure. And its just he and his regular band, no saxophones, trumpets. As with most of his repertoire from this period, he dont play 'songs'. Basically he wails on the guitar and make up verses from different blues standards.

  1. For fans of electric Chicago Blues played by white guys who are Blues-Rockers, this is probably a great album. However, for people like me, who love the old Blues from the 1920s and '30s, and the classics from Chess Records, this album is a pure snoozefest. When I was fifteen years old, I would have loved the endless solo-ing on this album. These days, I'm looking for what I look for in the great Country Blues records of yesteryear: story-telling, meaning, emotive vocals, and, sure, expressive guitar playing. If you're a huge fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan and think he is Jesus Christ, then buy this album. Personally, this record put me to sleep.

  2. I'm a big Blues fan. I'm partial to the old Blues, but I can appreciate good new Blues as well, as found in this record by JIMMY ROGERS and RONNIE EARL. There are no words to define the category of this record. The big class of JIMMY, one of the greats, shines all along, but above all there is RONNIE EARL's extraordinary guitar. I had the opportunity to see RONNIE live in BARCELONA in 1998. He played themes from his LP "Colour Of Love" and I was very impressed.
Now while writing these lines I'm listening to the wonderful song that opens the record "Okie Dokie Stomp" (of which the extraordinary Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown has several magnificent versions in some of his LPs). But when you listen to "Blues in D-Natural" or "Same old Blues" you realize how important this the record is: just incredible. This live recording in Germany in honor of Chicago Blues has plenty of feeling, containing classics like "Got My Mojo Working" and "Shake Your Money Maker", from the time when Jimmy Rogers played as a bandmate of the great Muddy Waters, and songs composed by Jimmy as "Rock this House" and the delightful "Gold Tailed Bird" (what a big work by Ronnie Earl's strong guitar). Both Sugar Ray Norcia on harmonica and Dave Maxwell on piano provide outstanding contributions. In short: a great Chicago blues album, great guitar playing and as always Jimmy's great voice. 5 Stars! Highly recommended.

  3. In the pursuit of my passion for the Blues I sought out this CD due to hearing the cut "Blues in D-Natural". It is a riveting track that stuck in my mind long after I heard it. It was attributed to Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, but fortunately Amazon led me to find the Jimmy Rodgers title and overall disc. This is a live recording in Germany that is a celebration and restrospective of Chicago Blues in both sound and feel. Containing classics like "Got My Mojo Working" and "Shake Your Money Maker", based upon Jimmiy Rodgers time as a bandmate of the great Muddy Waters, this is a living tribute to an influential blues player. Jimmy leads the show but allows the respective players plenty of time in the spotlight to show their expertise. It is apparent that everyone is having a good time and the intimacy of the players comes through. I felt good listening to this offering and return to it often. In addition to Ronnie Earl's strong guitar work, both Sugar Ray Norcia on harmonica and Dave Maxwell on piano provide outstanding contributions. In summary this is a fun and spontaneous effort that is sure to please.

  4. I confess that when I bought this CD I didn't know anything about Ronnie Earl. I bought it because I was (and I still am) a fan of the great Jimmy Rogers. The fist track impressed me lots; whaoo I thought this guy can play! However it was the second song "blues in D natural" that drove me nuts! I still believe that it is the finest blues guitar solo ever recorded! The only one in my collection that could compare it is SRV version of "Texas Flood" from the collection "Blues before sunrise". My music collection includes more than 500 blues CD and about 300 LP, I think you could trust me. Just for that second track alone you should buy this records. The rest of the CD will not disappoint any true Chicago blues fun. A great Chicago blues album, great guitar playing and as always Jimmy's great voice. 5 Stars!

1 comments about Live at Pepper's 1968.

  1. In spite little tin sound it has, this 'Live at Peppers'68' is a very good record (I like it very much) with a great interpretation BROOKS's guitar and great Blues's themes. This is one of the first Loonie Brooks's records, recorded live in December 1968 at Pepper's Lounge in Chicago being the anecdote that this record is backed by Earl Hooker's band (Earl Hooker the sensational) with a repertory consisted basically of very good covers. The performances of this CD are typical of what one could hear in a Blues club in 1968. In that context Brooks carries out a phenomenal performance on familiar material like the wonderful "Hideway" or "Sweet little angel" or "You don't have to go", plays his Chuck Berry riffs in "Shaking little mama", but all of them and the remainder of the record are full of energy catching the ambience of Pepper's Lounge. In a short words I recommend it as a very good record as a valuable document of everyday live Blues also. I give it 4 stars.

  1. You already know this is an awesome album! I've just got to say the review that starts off by saying..."To start with, I DON'T like country music." Obviously a lame thing to say out loud, especially when everyone can read what you've written for years, and years, and years...

  2. Get the CD. Delbert McClinton's a strong blue eyed soul singer. This live CD's got some serious rocked out blues. The backup band's great, instrumentation is solid. Plus, the engineering's very good, you get just enough 'live' feel without an overflow of the annoying sussurrus from the audience.

    Favorites:

"Shaky Ground" okay, I love every version of this song, this one's no exception

"B Movie Boxcar Blues" I heard this song first on this CD and just could not get it off repeat. Great tale of a traveling man's escapades.

"Going back to Louisiana" another great blues standard.

    Rebecca Kyle, August 2008

  3. To start with, I DON'T like country music. With that said, this CD rocks. I had to try a Delbert McClinton CD after listening to Imus drone on daily about Delbert McClinton and started out with this CD. I am particularly a fan of tight bands and they just don't get tighter than his. The twangy ones I can do without but overall this CD rates a 6 on a scale of 5. And if you get the chance to see him and his band live, well, don't miss it. Pay any money. You will not be diappointed.

  4. For lovers of good clean rock and roll with a bluesy flair, this album is one of the best buys around. Backed up by a terrific band, including a fabulous horn section, McClinton runs through his own classics like "Givin' It Up For Your Love",and "Back To Louisiana" as well as covers like Otis Redding's "I've Got Dreams To Remember". McClinton's raunchy voice and energetic style prove that he sets the standard for live perfomances. The album's only drawback is that at less than 40 minutes in length, the party is over before you are ready for the fun to end. Nonetheless, it remains one of my favorite albums, bar none. An absolute must have for any rock and roll fan.

  5. Although live, this is an excelent recording and I think that a live performance is the only way to hear Delbert at his best. I also have the Ultimate Collection CD, which it is not the Ultimate collection, it is missing Standing on Shaky ground and several other great tracks.

  1. I think Little Brother Montgomery,Roosevelt Sykes and Otis Spann are the best blues piano players ever. This is a performance of the first of them,at his best.I've bought recently this CD (Newbury _Comics).The price was incredibly low,the music wonderful. Thanks NC!

  2. This disc is simply fantastic. Every song is fun, engaging, and well-articulated. Little Brother's vocals are also a perfect fit for the music. This disc is a mixture of old Blues and Jazz tunes, and is performed with great knowledge and sensitivity. I can't recommend this album enough, especially considering its extremely cheap price on Amazon.com. The liner notes are a bit skimpy, but I could not have been more pleased with this cd.

  3. I'm biased, I just love the late great Little Brother Montgomery. My favourite piano player, even ahead of Pete, Slim, Roosevelt, Jack, et al. A very fine player, and here with a small combo of good buddies on horns, banjo, etc. An intimate album with a great feeling, and his singing hits the spot as much as his playing. My favourite post-war recordings by LBM.

  4. Pure piano blues played wonderfully with soulful vocals by a physically small man whose talents were gigantic. I can't enough of the music in this cd.
