- This is the best alt. country band out right now. If you can not see these guys live, do yourself a favor and get this. I have become a quick fan of these guys, after seeing them live a few months ago. They have a familiar, but unique sound which is hard to find. These guys are gonna be big sooner or later.

3 comments about Live in Japan.
- One of the most wonderfull disc i've ever listened!!, the delivery was ok; regards from underworld
- Primal Scream (for me) have been a truly amazing band....a band, that when the muse takes them, can produce some of the most distinctive and energetically accomplished albums around. So the Truly high points of their work are largely considered to be the Sunny, carefree ecstasy optimism of "Screamadelica" that skilfully fuses House/electronica and Rock together for something transcending conventional rock. Through to the harsh abrasive XTRMNTR, an album that focused an aggressive melding of techno and agitated hard rock, into a thrilling confrontational rollercoaster ride. And having only ever sampled the band via their studio albums, I'd over the years heard that their `Live' performances can on occasion outstrip their studio work. Well, having finally managed to get hold of the `Live in Japan' album which was recommended as a perfect starting point, to hear the bands live work....I was initially slightly dubious, before I actually got a chance to hear it...seeing as it's not exactly readily available everywhere in the U.K. was I setting myself up for a crushing disappointment???
...I should have given the band the benefit of the doubt, because from the moment I stuck this album on, there are just two things that go through your mind when you're listening to it. (1) This band really flourish and come into their own, in a `Live' environment .....(2) This `Live' performance is Fierce...
Bobby Gillespie, seems to literally revel in the `Live' surroundings, with a vocal swagger and confidence that imbues all the best live performers/performances of their time. What this basically boils down to, is a run through of the highlights of their previous albums, but the Live surrounding, give the band ample opportunity to show that they, not only cut it when they perform their songs Live, but also bolster their own fanbase, via word of mouth reviews of their exceptional ability to take fans favourites Such as "Accelerator, Shoot Speed/Kill Light, Swasitika Eyes", which all crackle with a brash and volatile energy, but totally boost the sound, with sheer self-confidence, that It almost feels like Gillespie is goading the audience into inciting a Riot, such is the sheer balls-on-the-wall approach to these songs. Which seems at complete odds with the change in tone for some of the more subtle / subdued songs which "Higher That the Sun & Movin' on Up" require...with soaring melodies and choruses, and such a gleeful celebratory hedonistic abandon, that your instantly transported back to the early rave/dance scene of the 90's in the U.K.
There's no doubt that although Primal Scream, could never be considered a band that were `lacking confidence', these performances must have elevated their already large ego's to almost stratospheric proportions....and it's one that is arguably well deserved. This truly sounds like one of those seminal gigs, where people list it amongst their all time faves, or refer to the performance years later. Understandably the Japanese audience were ecstatic, at bring present at such a seminal performance, and one...that you have to wonder, if the band can reasonably surpass the groundwork that they've laid here. Such is the sheer brilliance of their performance that unless, they're holding something back for future shows, it's extremely hard to identify, just how they'll progress beyond these performances. The sound itself is pretty much spot-on, a balance between having the rugged feel of Live shows, but enough of the precision of the Studio albums, and with crowd noise mercifully kept to before and after songs.
Complaints...mere nitpicking on my part, regarding tracks, that weren't part of the setlist....(why no, "Loaded, Star, Blood Money, Exterminator, Come together??....and my personal fave "Stuka"). But again this is merely nitpicking on my part. What Primal Scream has done is dropped a Live album that should be mentioned amongst the greatest Live albums ever: "James Brown - Live at the Apollo", "Neil Young - Live Rust", "Nirvana - Live at MTV", Miles Davis - Live/Evil", "Albert King - Live Wire/Blues Power", "MC5 - Kick out the Jams", "The Who - Live at Leeds", "The Roots - Live", "Bob Marley and The Wailers - Live", "led Zeppelin - How the West was won". And anybody that has the opportunity to pick this `Live' album up, so do so without any reservation whatsoever, before it becomes a scarce item (unless it gets a domestic release), for an album as essential as their greatest studio work.
- One of the best live albums that I have ever heard. This is a TRUE rock and roll band (with a bit of pop, house, grunge, punk, techno, and the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure) hitting on all cylinders. And what an engine it is - a V-16, at least, although the roar and fury of a dive-bombing Messerschmitt comes to mind. The power of this band is unbelievable - you must purchase this CD to hear what a full-throttle sonic assault sounds like. This is not to say that it is just noise - on the contrary, the musicality of this band at this amped up volume is what amazes. Screamadelics, purchase early and often. You will not be disappointed. Those just learning about this amazing band would do well to begin here, just to get a sense of the awesome power that this group can unleash at will. Devastating!

- The sound quality of the live concert recorded on this CD is a little low, which is bad for Steel Pole Bathtub's style of music. The major problem, is the entire CD is 1 track, all the songs together. I ripped them to wavs and had to manually cut the songs into seperate files then convert them to ogg vorbis. This should not be your first Steel Pole Bathtub record if you are new to them. Get Miracle of sounds in motion, cocktail suggestions, etc, but if you like SPB(T) then you will eventuall buy this CD.

5 comments about PNYC.
- Hot on the heels of two acclaimed studio albums, the trio of Geoff Barrow, Adrian Utley and singer Beth Gibbons toured the United States and in doing so worked with an orchestra and horns for a live release.
It is often thought that electronic music is difficult to capture outside a studio, but "Live: Roseland NYC" is at the very least an exception. Whilst many critics have said Portishead's releases are too similar to each other, a good listen to "Live: Roseland NYC" with reveal a great many surprises about how Portishead adapt their songs to a concert setting. Contrary to what some might expect all the samples of their studio work are present, notably on "Only You" where they are used to create a crescendo effect in the middle of the song.
The strings add a great deal of melody to the songs compared to the stripped-down versions seen on their second album, but what is really surprising and overlooked in the much greater range of Beth Gibbons' voice found in the live setting. At the end of the dark "Sour Times" her voice - so restrined in the studio version - turns into an absolute growl that might put off some fans, but is as impressive as anything Bjork could ever manage. The quiet-to-loud dynamic of "Over" is similar in its effect, notably when Beth sings "recognise me any more" in an angry tone. On the other side, "Half Day Closing" is quite remarkably eerie and out-does any post-rock band. The opening tracks, "Cowboys" and "All Mine", and the earlier "Roads" are more akin to the studio versions but their powerful beauty is so unlike most pop music that it always captures the attention of someone weaned on the commercial music of the eighties.
All in all, "Live: Roseland NYC" is the most essential release from Portishead and one of the very best albums of the 1990s. The material is played in a subtly but genuinely darker, moodier, more intense yet more wistful tone than in the studio, and the accompanying orchestra is completely part of the songs as they are arranged. The cover, too, which reminds me of a school orchestra as I once played wihtout success in, is very fitting.
- It seems like it might not work at first, but Portishead's "Live: Roseland NYC" album is probably the most stunning and most original live electronica album. And the string orchestra enhances their songs in unexpected ways.
If Portishead's second album sounded like a creepy soundtrack to a Halloween horror movie, the string ensemble take the scary crescendos to a whole new level. Beth Gibbons sings a crooning alto similar to the James Bond singer Shirley Bassey. In the song "Cowboys," the orchestra resounds with a wave of dissonance that escalates to a frightening peak with the electric guitars amplifying the dark tension. Combine that with the squeeky turntable scratches, and the band sounds like a deadly mix of James Bond mystery with electric mayhem.
And believe it or not, there are plenty of smooth and sassy James Bond-style orchestrations. The blaring trumpets and strings in "All Mine" turns the copa cabana song into a smoky, jazzy scene, with guitars to electrify the atmosphere.
Even though the live set begins with songs from their less popular second album, there are still plenty of fantastic mixes of songs from their debut album to spare. The high-pitched screeches of the violins in "Mysterons" transform the electronica song into a soundtrack from an Alfred Hitchcock horror film. "Glory Box" sounds even sassier and sexier with actual strings to back up Gibbons' voice and the funky DJ scratcher. And if Portishead fans thought "Sour Times" sounded cool, just wait until they hear the adrenaline-filled crescendo of strings, organs, drums, guitars and DJ scratches, combined with Gibbons' wailing at the end.
And the band has an especially tender moment in the song "Roads," where the spacy jazz wah-wahs and the strings soften their set with a gorgeous faze of romanticism. Beth Gibbons' softening voice near the end make this ballad reach a wonderful intimate level like no other.
But the strings are the most entrancing in the hip-hop beat-oriented jam "Strangers." The beats, combined with the snazzy horns and strings, make this Portishead exciting and electrifying. It's a great way to end an awesome concert of hip-hop, Halloween rock and orchestral splendor. It also shows Portishead in their prime, with an artistic taste like no other electronica band in the world.
- I read a review for Third in the New Yorker, and I found out that this live album existed. I had to get it right away because the reviewer was basically saying that Third is great, but nothing can ever beat the Roseland NYC album.. I have to say that Roseland is genius and I am extremely sd to have missed out on it for so long. Roseland really is a masterpiece.
- One word: "Roads." What a mess the dimwitted NYC audience made of this song. Their stupid little clap-a-long and early applause ruin what really would have been one of the standout tracks on this album. Good news: no clapping on the DVD version! That said, I think most people will be happier with the DVD audio. Buy the DVD, and download "Sour Times" as this is the only performance that is really missing from the DVD.
- This is a masterpiece of contemporary music. PNYC is a very complex album, full of arrangements that goes to deep obsesive levels. No matter what kind of music do you really like. Everyone who cares about music should hear this album, and watch the dvd concert...many, many times. Pity i can't give them more than 5 stars.

4 comments about Still Got Live, Even If You Don't Want It.
- I remember years ago that 'Still Got...' was only available on cassette.Thank goodness for CD reissues, wouldn't you say?I mean cassettes break or jam all too often anyway.Total of 25 songs played in one hour's time.Any Dickies fan should be much delighted with this disc as the guys tend to show off their all American brand of high-energy straight ahead punk.Plenty of covers as well.Covers that you might not expect a punk band to play, like Sabbath's "Paranoid",Paul Simon's "The Sound Of Silence",Moody Blue's "Nights In White Satin",the Monkee's "She" and Barry McGuire's "Eve Of Destruction".Oh and they even close out the set with the Banana Split's theme. Now,that's what I call original.Just an all around fun CD to listen to.Should appeal to fans of The Damned,Buzzcocks,Generation X and the Dead Milkmen.
- I just heard from the Dickies on this very subject. This is a CD re-release of the cassette "We Aren't the World" that was released on ROIR. The performance is excellent, although the sound quality lacks sometimes. I had the cassette of this release in about 1988 or 89 and it has long been out of print.
Take it for what it is... that is, A GREAT DICKIES CD. If you are a Dickies fan, I would suggest buying the following DVD: The Best of Flipside Video, Volume 1. There is a great performance by the Dickies, as well as an amazing set by the Circle Jerks. There are also performances by Bad Religion and The Weirdos. There is also a new live video from Japan that is being released!!!
- I bought "Dawn of the Dickies" in about 1984 and was immediately mesmerized. How could any band beat the withering, flipped-out guitar solo in "Nights in White Satin", or the playful lyrics in "Stuck in a Pagoda (with Tricia Toyota)"? Sad to say, "Dawn" has never been released on CD and I'm stuck with my old LP version (and here I am, caught between turntables! ). When I found that amazon.com had this CD available I jumped at the chance to purchase it and I have to say, I was disappointed. The song selection was great, but the CD was "digitally cloned", as it says on the back cover, from a 1986 cassette! Come on! Several songs drop out countless times in the middle and most of the CD is muddled and unprofessional. This one is only for hardcore collectors of Dickies material.....uh, like me. Maybe we can get amazon.com to exert some pressure on the record label or the band to re-release "Dawn of the Dickies, undoubtedly the finest moment in L.A. punk recording.......
Watching Abe Vigoda and everything will be fine!
- 25 tracks, and not exactly like the album versions (this is good!). Excellent selection of their best songs. Now if only Dawn of the Dickies were still in print.... ah.. this cd makes me feel like im in high school.

5 comments about 9/1/00 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- I've listened to pretty much all of the 2000 boots and this single concert contains the best renditions of 'red mosquito' and 'porch' from the 2000 concert run. Mike's guitar playing is absolutely insane, and the band is tight as ever.
- I bought this one because of the great reviews on amazon and allmusic. And I am glad I did. Pearl Jam at their best. Mike is on this night. And so is Eddy. Fantastic show. "Breath" taking!
- All of the shows on the first leg of the 2000 American Tour, even the classic Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh shows, have their occasional flaws. This one from Philadelphia has none. The playing is vitually flawless, and the band's full power is roaring through the venue. The only thing that keeps it a notch below the other two previously mentioned shows is the excitement level, which is not quite as high. Other than that, a great live album, and a much better one than the "official" live release, "Live on Two Legs".
- Highlights from Philly include; the entire verse of the Save It For Later tag in Betterman (but it slows the tempo down- try Pittsburgh if you and to hear the best SIFL tag that totally rocks out) and Present Tense which features Eddy's mellow voice. This is the only show w/Breath, but that song's not really one of their best. Get MA w/Patriot, Indy w/Throw Your Arms Around Me, or DC w/the best It's Okay tag from Daughter of the tour if you're looking for really good unique performances. Porch is its usual boring slow tempo that PJ has become accustomed to since Matt joined them. Check out PJ Unplugged or any old concerts w/Jack or Dave on the drums if you want to hear this song when it was one of their best. Also 'Once upon a time a could control myself' from Once doesn't quite have the same effect now that Eddy does control himself and limits his screams and powerful vocals significantly- but you can't stay young forever.
With Matt on drums, three of their best live songs, Deep, Leash, and Blood, have all gone way of the dodo. All he does is just keep the beat (w/the exception of In My Tree, Immortality, and RVM) unlike Jack who used to rock out and extend jams with Mike all concert long. Listen to an old Alive, Blood from the '95 Soldier field concert, or the 8 1/2 minute version of Corduroy from the 11/2/95 Salt Lake City concert you'll hear what a difference a drummer can make. Philly is above average but pick up Boise, Spodek 2nd night, Tampa, or Chicago, just to name a few, before you buy this one.
- Pearl Jam's performance in NJ on the first of Septemeber is about as good a PJ concert as your going to get. This concert is almost flawless (except for "Breath" in which Eddie forgets one of the lines, so he just repeats the previous line - but who could blame him) and each track has a great feel. With virtually no mistakes, PJ delivers a great (if not the best of the 72) "Betterman" with an extended jam at the end which includes the "Save it for later" tag. The "Sometimes" on this disc is the best of the tour, and leading into a scorching version of "Last Exit" adds a nice dynamic. "Animal" is awesome, followed by a near perfect version of "Red Mosquito." The "Present Tense" from this show is the best I've ever heard! Also, "Corduroy", even though it was played often on this 72 show tour, shines brightly as one of the best takes of the tour. What can I say? This disc is almost like a best of live. The second disc has some highlights as well, including great versions of "Insignificance," "GO," and "Tremor Christ." This version of "Jeremy" is still my favourite to date (including older PJ versions, i.e.1992). If you are going to buy only one of these 72 shows, this is definitely the one.

5 comments about Heart Still Beating.
- Put this on and watch the womens pants melt right off! Also, you will need 2,000,000 amperes heat lamp. Like they use in Abu Gahreb prison.
- Roxy Music's Heart Still Beating was released in October of 1990.
The album was recorded Live in Frejus in the South of France in August of 1982 during the tour to support Avalon.
Originally, four tracks from this concert was released as The High Road EP in 1983. In October of 1990, the rest of the concert was used to create this lasting document of the final 80's version of the band which featured original members guitarist Phil Manzanera, lead singer Bryan Ferry and saxophonist Andy Mackay plus new drummer Andy Newmark, future Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler keyboardist Guy Fletcher and Bryan's guitarist neil Hubbard and bass player Alan Spenner plus three backing singers.
This EP turned full live album included their superb cover of Neil Young's 1977 classic Like a Hurricane(original yet contained the classic elements of the original), killer versions of Out of the Blue and Can't Let Go(the former had Phil Manzanera play a guitar solo in place of the original track's violin solo).
Plus great versions of A Song For Europe, Love is the Drug, Avalon and a stirring version of John Lennon's classic Jealous Guy are among the highlight.
This was a great live album which would be their last until their 2003 reunion live album which saw the return of original drummer Paul Thompson.
Highly Recommended!
NO COUNTER REVIEWS PLEASE!
- Given a choice I will almost always take a good live cd over a good studio cd. This is a good live cd.
The cd starts slowly (the reason for docking it a star). While the songs are not bad, the only one that reaches out and grabs you is "Impossible Guitars" (a taste of what Phil Manzanera is capable of - if you like it, check out his cd "Primitive Guitars").
With "Love Is the Drug" things pick up. One of roxy's few "hits" it would likely be tough to perform this in a way I wouldn't like - but the version here is excellent. Then comes an excellent cover of Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane" - better, in my opinion, than the original. Next is "My Only Love", another well done song, then a few hit an miss attempts (the best - "Avalon" - another song that would be tough to ruin). Concluding the cd is a killer cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" - containing an excellent sax solo (with feedback!) and free whistling by Brian Ferry sure to send chills up and down your spine.
Buy this cd - there are no bad songs and several outstanding cuts.
- A fine live album. Some songs are extremely extended without necessity. But the album has good vibe, smart production, good guitar solos and the always mesmerizing voice of Bryan Ferry.
- I have NO idea what the one-star reviewer was listening to, but if for nothing else than the brilliant despair of "Can't Let Go" this live album is a stunner. And then . . . and then . . . one gets to "Like a Hurricane" and there isn't a more emotionally charged moment in any live album I have ever heard by any band. Phenomenal. Ferry is the true genius of our time.

5 comments about The Family Values Tour '98.
- Well. Family Values? This tour must have been grande. Because of this CD, I have had to get all of Rammsteins albums, plus albums from Incubus, Orgy and Korn. This CD cost me too much money in the long run, but hell, its great! Buy it now!
- This CD is great - I was at the tour and this CD brought it all back, but it features only one song from Rammstein!!!??? They were the co-feature act with Korn so why did they only have one song on this CD? (That's obviously the only thing keeping it from being 5 stars)
- I'm listening to it right now, and I can truthfully say it makes writing this review that much better
- This cd will be the best investment of your life besides going to woodstock. if you have the money to get this cd then go get it now!!! my name is mathew hatcher and if i didn't have this cd i wouldn't be complete.
