5 comments about Live From 6A : Late Night With Conan O'Brien.
- So I'll make it brief. This is a hidden gem of the late 90's, and it contains the Holy Grail: Dead Man Walking. David Bowies acoustic version of a techno experiment is quite possibly the most chillingly beautiful song ever written by the Glam God of Rock and Roll. In addition "Do Ya" is awesome as is Edwyn Collin's "Girl Like You". Mostly every track is enjoyable.
- This album has a ecletic collection of live performances from a wide variety of bands that were popular in the late 90's. Seems like such a long time ago already!
The two performances that were lacking though were, 1. Cake. Not that they were bad but there was some sort of technical problem that set their sound "off". And 2. an unusual song by that annoying band from "there's something about Mary" Maybe I just didn't care for the sound of his vocals.
But otherwise a great live album with humor and dignity! David Bowies song was a masterpiece of professionalism.
- Conan pretty much took up where Letterman left off at NBC: cutting edge comedy and under-the-radar musical acts that don't get a lot of TV time elsewhere. So, for nearly 20 years now, Late Night has "introduced" a lot of acts to a national TV audience. The artists on this compilation aren't nearly as obscure as some of the acts you'll see on a nightly basis on Conan, but it's a pretty interesting mix. From well-respected stars (Bowie and Costello) to indie acts with loyal followings (Sweet, DiFranco, Richman, Soul Coughing, SNZ) to artists who've had a modern rock hit or two in the 90s (Bjork, Cake, Jamiroquai, Edwyn Collins, 311). The highlights for me include Bowie's acoustic version of his "Dead Man Walking," Matthew Sweet's torrid soundcheck cover of The Move's "Do Ya," Costello's exquisite "All This Useless Beauty," Cake's driving "The Distance," and Jonathan Richman's slinky smooth "Let Her Go Into The Darkness." I'm not a fan of Jamiroquai or 311 (maybe you do) but they don't take away from the CD at all. Besides, it's hard to like EVERY band on compilations like this. It's still a great collection.
- Late Night is the best show on the air ever. I have been a hooked from the start. I think they need a new one. This one is geting old. The new one needs tracks from Conan and Andy and some tracks from Max (If they can put him in.) The CD is not that funny. The next CD needs D.O.P and C.P.W. The two best band I have seen on the show. It just so hapend the one was made up for a skit in a joke, making fun of ABCs Making The Band and the other was in the AT&T find the best band. It would be good in the next CD had the performer interv. Its good 311 and Cake are great on the CD.
- I had a hard time finding this CD, but now that I finally have it I've gotta tell you that it is GREAT. There are several superb artists giving fresh performances (David Bowie, Bjork, Elvis Costello, Cake) along with some really humorous lyrics in "Let Her Go into the Darkness" by Jonathan Richman. Bottom line: Even if you're not a big fan of "Late Night," I think you'll really enjoy "Live From 6A."

- Love and Rockets are my favorite band of all time, and have been for 22 years. Thus is it with a heavy heart that I caution the prospective listener with this review.
First, while the performance itself was passionate and well-executed, the sound quality of the recording is that of a bootleg at a Grateful Dead show by a guy who's had waaaaaaay too much acid. Indeed, poor Kevin sounds like he's taking out his frustrations on some abandoned luggage, and David is barely audible at all. Finally, Dan's guitar appears to be filtered through a tin can.
Please note: I saw the lads live at The Metro in Chicago, and the sound quality of a live show is several orders of magnitude better than is represented on this cd, so I know the problem isn't my ears.
Also: I played the cd in a Music Hall CD25.2 player with a state-of-the-art Burr-Brown DAC, so I know the problem isn't the playback hardware.
If I could, I would mail this cd to the band, with a note saying they can bloody well keep it.
It's too bad they aren't interested in contact from the fans, because they could benefit from some feedback.
- Ironic, for me, that this is the only official live Love & Rockets document. I saw them in April 1996, nine days before this concert was recorded, and made a bootleg of the show - which I loved and listened to a million times until, sadly, the tape got lost somewhere in the shuffle.
Then - behold! - they released this live CD, which is essentially identical to my beloved home-made recording.
Now, on to the music.
Love and Rockets were an awe-inspiring live band, and this CD shows why. Although an audio recording gives no hint to their mind-blowing light show (of course), you do get a high energy performance with tons of great songs. It's almost impossible to believe only three guys were on stage to make such atmospheric-to-blasting music, but all the elements are clearly defined: Daniel Ash's cool-as-hell vocals and shimmering guitar, David J's solid and sometimes ominous bass, and Kevin Haskins' clockwork drumming, with Haskins also supplying some special effects (OK, pre-taped sounds) from his drums.
I won't get into a song-by-song review here, except to say - L&R had an ability to take a song from a whisper to an explosion in a truly unique way, sounding nothing like the soft-!!!LOUD!!!-soft blueprint so many grunge and metal bands mistake for dynamics.
Buy this CD. I saw L&R many times back in the day, and this disc gives ample evidence of what kept me coming back.
- I usually steer clear of live albums, but as a half-crazed "Love and Rockets" fanatic, I'm glad I didn't pass this one up. Freakingly outstanding in every way. This goes down as one of the best concert albums of all time rivalling anything I've heard including The Cult, Talking Heads, Bauhaus, et al.........
- The bulk of this album is taken from the Sweet FA tour stop on April 9, 1996 at the Metro in Chicago. If you follow the used bins at your local wax depot, you've probably seen this album labelled as a 'radio only' disc (meaning only meant to be broadcast by radio stations, not purchased by consumers) or maybe even heard it played over the airwaves as part of your local rock station's programming. Anyway, an 8-song version of this album was floating around pretty good as a bootleg in the music stores, so to recoup some of the sales L&R put a proper copy out for all to enjoy. The tail-end of the album comes from a different concert back in the late 80's in California and was previously available as B-sides to a few of their singles. As for which singles the songs appeared depended on whether you were looking to purchase vinyl, cassette, or CD.
I was in attendance of the Chicago show and boy did it rock! Full house, lively crowd, $14 tickets, the "Dandy Warhols" opened, Love and Rockets were "on" that night including 3 encores, and that cute short girl with the retro 60's glasses standing stage left who....I digress. The live sound was almost exactly like the album sound - I'm at a loss as to why these recordings sound so raw and different. Oh well. Still a great show. For the interested, here's the set list from the Chicago show in case you want to play the tracks back in their original order: 1) Body And Soul (taped intro) 2) Ball of Confusion 3) So Alive (dirty version) 4) Judgement Day 5) Rock On 6) Slice of Life (1st ever playing at a Love and Rockets show) 7) Use Me 8) Sweet Lover Hangover 9) Kundalini Express 10) Clean (David J.) 11) The Light --- Encore 1 --- 12) No New Tale To Tell 13) Mirror People --- Encore 2 --- 14) Holiday on the Moon 15) Yin and Yang (the Flowerpot Man) (really long trippy version) --- Encore 3 --- 16) Sweet F.A.
- this cd shows the progression of Love and Rockets. the newer material shows a rock band with glam influences..ie, current dance, sampling, and drum and guitar. this version of the hit "So Alive" is the "dirty" version which is stripped down to just drum and guitar, no samples. a lot of the "newer" old songs are stripped down, guitar and drums.
I wished it was 2 discs: Disc 1, circa 1989, when Earth Sun Moon came out, so you can see their glam/ psychedelic period. Disc 2, circa 1996, the stripped down rock and roll period.
I have seen Love and Rockets live 3 times and this covers everything.
ps...there is even a "shout out" for Heartbreak Hotel which was covered by Daniel Ash in Tones on Tail.

- Uh, don't try to understand anything out of his mouth on this one... a 24 bit master of tapes that sound like poo do nothing to improve the atmosphere and it's pointless to mix this in 5.1! One would think that better recording techniques and equipment were available in 1991. No cool extras except the "liner notes" DVD segment with a nice, short band/Shane bio... other than that, no cool extras at all. I love the Pogues but cannot stomach this waste of plastic DualDisc.

- Personally I'm very wary of live Gun Club albums, the early eighties glut of lo-fi semi-offical bootlegs being the cause (and yeah I know they sound better on cd but that's not the point)-anyway all I really want to say about this is HAVE NO FEAR-this is simply a really stunning record-great sound quality (obviously, since it's a radio broadcast), and a great line up-JLP/Congo/Romi and Simon Fish-the band is superb throughout.
I would reckon that if you've got to the point of searching for this album you already love The Gun Club and don't need me to tell you how great they are. This album (however much you eventually wind up paying for it) is worth it alone for the version of Yellow Eyes, and great as the original versions on the Ramblin' Jeffrey Lee album are, Go Tell The Mountain and Stranger In My Heart are different beasts on this record, but that's beside the point-it's all great, and your record collection needs this album !
- Yea, this appears to be the same recording that was also released as Ahmed's Wild Dream....a gig recorded for a Dutch radio broadcast by VPRO-radio in March 1992. A late Gun Club recording and it was a good gig...Jeffrey was on form and the guitar work on 'Go Tell The Mountain' is superb.
Bottom line is that a lot of poor live recordings got issued by various disaffected GC members over the years but this isn't one of them. Buy it!
- This Live-CD has a good sound and provides a good overview of Gun Clubs work. Regarding the songs, it features the style of Mother Juno and Fire of Love. As Gun Club is a live band, this CD can be recommended for it's added atmosphere alone. And there's a great Cover song also. So I would prefer this Live-CD over any Greatest-CD (given the same song selection).
- I remember going to see the Gun Club at Sheffields Leadmill. They turned up late, about 4 hours to be exact then the group of friends I was with decided into the second song it was time to catch the last bus home, afterwards whilst walking for four hours in the pouring rain trying to locate the whereabouts of my so-called mates house I reflected back on what I can only descibe as a truly inspirational gig, J L Pearce with his pale blue fender powering through all his classics, Kid Congo sliding and feeding back in all the right places, the fender twin reverb amp he was playing through propped up on a flimsy chair defying gravity with its pulsing vibrations, this was 13 or 14 years ago and I still reflect fondly to this day on one of the best gigs I have ever witnessed. Many gigs later of my own, there isn't one that hasn't had some ingredient of that Gun Club set which obviously has had a lasting effect on me.This album just about sums up my own personal thoughts on how a band should sound live.Where was I,Oh yeah -the album just buy it you know it makes sense.
- If you like The Gun Club and want a live cd - this is the best sounding one available. I have at least 2 to 3 other live recordings on cd and record and they range from o.k. sound to actually being able to hear people talk over the music...this Gun Club is clean, clear and crisp. I recommend it for any Gun Club fan. It is much better sounding compared to the other live releases on both cd and record formats.

- whipping as an intro is great and so is the rest of the show. NOt their best but still great. Very cool setlist might i add. This show deserves more than what oher people have rated it.
- Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. In the 2000 bootleg series, the other shows in the state of California were all good or great. Unfortunately, this gig in Sacramento marks the low point of the American tour, and this bootleg is one of the worst in the series. The band could be forgiven for fatigue (this was the 67th show in the tour), but they're also guilty of extreme laziness and carelessness tonight. Also, this show is one of the shortest in the tour and is a good 20 minutes shorter than average, as if they just gave up and left. The band did attempt to get creative with the set list, with several surprises and rarities. The surprise opener is "Whipping," which really gets the show off to a wild start. However, the momentum is immediately broken by the dreary "Insignificance." This song usually works well in the middle of the set, when it's time to get serious, but near the start of the show it's a total party pooper. The momentum is never quite recovered, and this show descends into a bottomless pit of errors and a general "who cares" attitude. "Tremor Christ" is terribly uncoordinated and just sounds sluggish, rather than sinister like it should. "Immortality" is mostly successful but breaks down in the outro when the band attempts to improvise a little. "Rearviewmirror" perks things up slightly, but once again things break down during an incredibly sluggish encore. Even Mike McCready's outro to "Yellow Ledbetter" is dull and uninspired, instead of the blazing display of riffsmanship that it usually is. For Pearl Jam, this probably felt like just one poor night, and the bootleg series proves that they were great 90% of the time. But the people who paid to see this show in Sacramento should have demanded a refund.
- i, too, saw this show and didn't like it. it was the worst of the half-dozen times i've seen pearl jam. i didn't like the set list, the performance was average by pj standards, and it was a short set. that said, the concert is a much better experience in the warmth of my own home. and the show is good -- if there weren't four dozen better pearl jam live albums out there. save your money and get the las vegas show from eight days earlier or the san francisco show from one day later, to name just two far-better shows.
- I bought this album because (1) I was at the cold, miserable show at Sac Valley Ampitheater and (2) the version of "The Kids Are Alright" was one I'd never heard before from them, except at the show, fast and more true to the Who version, very very good. It is shorter than many of the other concerts, but a gem in its own right. The appearances of "Whipping," "Last Exit" and "Tremor Christ" are wonderful, welcome additions to their more recent shows, and "State of Love and Trust" is one of the most heartfelt I've ever heard, Vedder singing to a different melody, dragging out the long notes. "Last Kiss" is also great. So- if these are some of your favorite songs, as they are mine, you'll greatly enjoy this album.

- This CD is awsome. If you are a Green Day fan it is a must have.
- This is a collection of great live tracks from green day's earlier days and it is very good... But $70!!! I'm from England and i bought it from the UK amazon for £12 brand new, imported from Japan! Either i got a bargain or you're being ripped off.
- i'd give this 10 stars, if i could! this was the 4th green day, well 'thing' i guess, that i bought(i acctaully found it at tower records for much cheeper then this), i'd had had AI, insomniac, and bullet in a bible before hand. it has awesome awesome awesome preformances, for ALL the songs on it, some which i greatly prefer over the studio recs. its a really wonderful line up aswell, except that at the end of FOD, billie does the 'hey-oh' thing into the crowd he does at alot of concerts, so not a terrific way to end, it makes you want more. but, really, even though it is an EP, it is still by far my favorite CD of all that i own. truely superb.
- I own two Green Day live ablums, "Bowling Bowling Bowling Parking Parking" and "Foot in Mouth" and this is by far the better one. It has most of Green Days earlier hits from their first ablum all the way up to Insominac. The song list is:
Going to Pasalaqua 5/5- this one was from their first ablum, catchy with a new Bass riff.
Welcome to Paradise5/5- the first single off Dookie, even more energetic live.
Geek Stink Breath 4/5- first single off Insomniac, has a catchy palm muted guitar riff, not much changed from the Ablum version
One of My Lies 5/5- A great song from Kerplunk, I don't have Kerplunk yet so I don't if there are any differences.
Stuck With Me 5/5- One of the best songs from Insomniac, Billie says its new but thats because he's not in America when he played it live.
Chump 4/5-This song is okay but I added an extra point because of the crazy ending guitar riff and because tihs song means Longview Follows.
Longview5/5- This proably the best Dookie single, it has one of the best Bass riffs in punk rock. Live its more energetic and the crowd reaction is great, but theres a part in the chourus where Billie stops singing anf you can barley hear the crowd singing over the loud Guitar and Bass.
2,000 Light Years Away5/5- This is Green Day's best Kerplunk song and Live it's even better.
When I Come Around 5/5- Another well know Dookie single, live its played faster and I like the guitar solo better without a rhythim guitar played in the backround.
Burnout 4/5- A little out of place as the second to last song since this is the first song on Dookie, its still good.
F.O.D. 4/5- A great way to end a great live ablum.
- This CD is a must for any Green Day fan. I have been a fan since 94', and always will be. Keep rocking Green Day!

- For the most part this rare collection has it's hits and misses..first of all, like Crass, the Bootleg, it's for the obsessed fan..so take it as it is..mostly raw live recordings with a smattering of demos, this record covers mostly unreleased material..key tracks are Safe, 12xU, an early live version of Our Swimmer, and Inventory. You won't find much that sounds like Pink Flag, Chairs Missing but closer to 154 and later 80's material..

- These fellas don't mess around. Straight on, no nonsense rock, the way it's supposed to be: fun, loud, and damn near ready to break apart.
If you don't like "These Calloused Hands" or "Don't Look At Me When I'm Looking At You," you should probably stop buying rock and roll music forever.
- It's so obvious by the two other lonely reviews that this record has been missed by countless morons too busy listenin' to fuggin' Limp Brisket and Linkies' Pork. I was turned on to this group a while back and it instilled my faith in good old fashion Rock n' Roll once again. Being an avid fan of 50's R n' B, Rockabilly and 60's/70's garage punk, I can attess to the fact that this slab of vinyl or plastic will kick your booty into next year. This is the perfect record to play when your dimwit neighbors are playin' that boring old CLASSIC ROCK poop on the radio. Wish these folks were still kickin', but if your interested check out the HARD FEELINGS, which features some of the members of this band. GOD BLESS ROCK N' ROLL, BABY!
- Revelators play a thrilling mixture of super-slide rhytm&blues that strongly makes you shake your hips. They deliver a non-stop roarin' fueled with a hillbilly-chainsaw-punk attitude that burns the ground. It's terrible they disbanded.
- This ROARS!!!!!!! as it's bustin' outta the garage!!!!!!! Like getting punched in the gut repeatedly (in a good way). Torqued, twisted, and way-amped up. Why, I'm soaking in it now. Raw, crunching, greasy, and abrasive r-n-r! If only this were around in the early '70s on 8 track-jam it in the under dash player and swig the pilfered beer as we cruise around aimlessly. At least we did have the Stooges.

- Idont know why they broke up but this cd is great and great for being live
- Despite the bands breakup, they did play a show late 2004 with Mu330 at the Chicago metro. I had never hear of them or Mu330 when my friends asked me to go to the show, but I do love ska. They were both spectacular. The each have a very different sound but should each be given a chance. Their anthem like "Pave the World" is a great show of how a band can move someone.
- Blue Meanies is dead. The band separated on May 2002. But this album will remain one of the psychiest ever. Ska? Punk? Core?
Prog? Maybe it's all this together, but with a big accent of that ska sound that they give themselves. Kinda circus that have turned to carnage, their lyrics talks about american life, mostly. Not for sweet ears. Even not for Mu330 fans who thinks that if they played together live so many times, they play the same kind of music. Not at all. For all Mr.Bungle,Primus,Naked City, and Aquabats fans.
- in a world where ska and punk fusion bands continue to sound like jeffries fan club rip-offs, this is the one band which truly stands out. this is the most energetic c.d. i have ever listened to, It's crazy. There is no modern ska/punk/jazz/polka?/metal band that you can even mention in the presence of these musicians. one of my favorite c.d.'s of all time... if i could only remember where I lost it...
- This is my favorite blue meanies cd ever. Anyone who loves these guys must own it, anyone who doesn't love these guys must own it, anyone how has never heard them, BUY IT!!!
Simply an amazing display of talent, i must listen to the entire cd at least twice a day, i picked it up at one of there shows a few months back, and haven't stopped listening yet. This is absolutely the best cd they have ever put out.
