  1. Everyone pretty much knows that Sid was not much a bass player. That is true. In this case, Sid has decided to be a front man, and damn is he good.....well, most of the time. Occasionally he may forget some words to his own songs (Belsen). I'm not positive if this recording actually has him forgetting the words or not. Either way, Sid is a punk legend, and this is a chance to hear him like never before, in the mic. Must have for any true punk fan, and especially pistols fans. Sid may have been the downfall of the Sex Pistols, but he was also the only reason they mattered. This disc shows you what his real potential was. RIP SID

  1. With a fired up Iggy (Pop) Stooge, Ron Ashton (g), Scott Ashton (d), Steve Mackay (sax) and Mike Watt (b) make this much more than an ongoing reunion tour by ancient rockers.

It is nearly 80 minutes of hard-edged "proto-punk" that is made loud to be played even louder. The Stooges are in their element and deliver an intensity that captures the period before the band imploded in the early-1970s.

Recorded on March 22, 2004 at Shibuya-Ax in Tokyo, Japan, the 17 cuts are mostly drawn from the band's first two albums - The Stooges and Fun House - with the latter being played in its entirety.

To casually dismiss The Stooges is a mistake. To think the band has nothing left in the gas tank is just plain wrong. This is a highly flammable sonic soundscape.

  2. it's not Iggy and the Stooges...it's THE STOOGES...back in action and
better than ever. not for the faint of heart.

  3. Show was recorded at Shibuya Axe,in Tokyo on March 22,2004.Good sound quality.I've heard a few complaints about the sound quality from other patrons.I don't know what these nimrods are whining about, the sound is fine!Get a l-i-f-e!Tracks that should have certain Stooges fans wetting their beds are the total slamming opener "Loose",the blistering "1969","I Wanna Be Your Dog"(how many bands have covered this tune?),"No Fun","1970",new songs "Skull Ring" and "Dead Rock Star" along with the ass-kicking "Electric Chair" and the finale "Not Right".Material here was pulled from '69's self-titled Stooges album,'70's 'Funhouse' and 2003's 'Skull Ring'.Line-up:Iggy-vocals,Ron Asheton-guitar,Scott Asheton-drums,Mike Watt-bass and Steven Mackay-sax.Wanted to also mention this CD has a LOT of cursing. What more could a true fan of proto-punk ask for?So highly recommended,it almost hurts.Heard this title may already be out-of-print.

  4. As the other reviews posted here advise: This CD is for dedicated Stooges fans. The audio quality is not what you would hope for. I have advice for those who want a live, contemporary, Stooges CD.
    1) Buy the "Iggy and The Stooges Live in Detroit" DVD from Amazon.
2)Use your favorite DVD audio editing software or DVD audio ripping software to pull the audio tracks off of the DVD.
3)Transfer the audio to a CD.
    4)Enjoy.
Though Steve's sax is mixed a little hot for my taste, the audio is very, very good. Ron's guitar is right there, loud and proud the way it ought to be. The only downside is that there are a couple of songs on Telluric Chaos that are not on Live in Detroit. Believe me, it's worth the tradeoff.

Not that Telluric Chaos isn't a good bootleg - it's better than average for a, well, a bootleg. Look at the back cover if you do buy it. The photo is reversed. Ron is not left handed. What's that tell you about the quality control of the producer?

  5. this is a really good audience recording...and i'm kind of a bootleg snob. the performance by iggy and crew is absolutely on fire...the energy is fantastic. iggy pop is the single most important person in rock'n roll history. die-hard Stooges fans DO NOT MISS OUT on this because I've heard its ALREADY OUT OF PRINT. Essential for the hardcores.

  1. This is a great live document of this period. All I can say is that if you like the songs off of Evol and Sister, check this out, you won't be disapointed. The Ramones covers are an excellant bonus too.

  2. I was supposed to be at this show. Well maybe not "supposed", but I had planned on going I just couldnt find a ride (I was 14, no drivers license). When I saw the date and location of this live CD, I of course freaked out. After hearing this disc, I totally wish I was there. This is a great live document of Sister era SY (their best IMO). Dont listen to the people that say the sound quality is lacking, it really isnt. In fact I think the sound quality is pretty great. It makes me wonder what kind of records these people are listening to. I fully agree with the review below me, if there is one thing I cant stand, its audiophiles, especially ones complaining about a SY live recording. If you are a SY fan, you need to own this.

  3. Having had Sonic Youth jackhammer my ears any number of times in varied locations, including "warming up" for a reunited Iggy & the Stooges at an outdoor amphitheatre to an audience of mostly middle aged guys wearing New York Dolls t-shirts, I've gotta say this live document from the "Sister" tour is like Manna from heaven, and I don't even believe in heaven. Other reviewers of this item have complained about bad sound quality, but clearly these people have hearing even more badly degraded than mine, since as far as I can tell the sound quality here completely outstrips any bootleg of the band that I've heard. For instance, this is in freakin' STEREO for crying out loud--I mean, a bootleg is just like being at the show, if "being at the show" means standing outside the venue with yr ears pressed up against the doors. Considering the recording here was engineered by longtime SY friend Wharton Tiers the results couldn't really be any better. Let me also remind naysayers that we're talking about Sonic Youth, a band that has done more for feedback and drone than anyone going back to Hendrix, a band whose love of lo-fi squall is pretty much unmatched. If all you really want is "perfect sound forever" then maybe you should stick with the Alan Parsons Project and leave living, breathing and bleeding music to the rest of us. Sorry for the mini-rant, but audiophiles annoy me like rock critics who insist on using nonsense terms like "collegiate rock" or "Coldplay."

As for the actual disc I had intended to review, it's an absolutely primo chunk of pre-"Daydream Nation" SY, at a Chicago show introduced by none other than Steve Albini. A huge chunk of "Sister" is performed, as well as a few from "EVOL" and even "Brother James." The encore medley of Ramones tunes is also a total thrill. There are no real freestyle sonic digressions, something they indulged in the last time I saw them about a year ago as of this writing, but the songs themselves contain enough nooks and crannies to fill a library of bent notes and alternate tunings. If played at the proper volume (i.e., maximum) you'll hear it in yr sleep. Pleasant dreams!

  4. the japanese typing on the cover means "my mother went shopping". I just tought i should let you know.

  5. I mean, let's make no mistake, any Sonic Youth record is better than most everything else on the racks. But when comparing this to other bootlegs from the "Sister" tour, you wonder why they chose this one to release. The sound is SO thin, and it really kills some of the songs. I would recommend tracking down "Be My Sister in Death", as it has almost all the same songs but a MUCH better sound.

Let's be honest, though: you are going to buy this for the enchore where they do Ramones covers. I will grant that this is one of my favorite Sonic Youth moments, as they really put their all into these covers, having fun but still treating them with the reverance they are due. This is the Sonic Youth that everyone forgets about when they talk about them being too arty - these folks also have their feet planted firmly in punk rock and can also display a wild sense of humor.

1 comments about Familiar to Millions Highlights.

  1. This CD is just a UK only highlight's compilation into 13 tracks on 1 disc from the original Familiar To Millions 2 disc 18 track CD that was released in the USA & the UK. It is a different color and features a sticker on the front to promote their "10 years of Noise and Confusion" mini tour of the UK.

If you are a hardcore oasis fan & collector like me, you should get this one to complete your collection. If you just want an oasis concert on CD get the original 2-disc release, or even better get the DVD, both are available on amazon.com (and are cheaper than this import!) I gave this one 4 stars only because it was sort of re-hashing the other release, and I would give the first one 5 stars.

Note for collectors - It could be argued that this disc was the fist release from Noel's Big Brother label, instead of Sony/Epic having a hand in it and therefore a sort of "test-run" of the Big Brother system so that gives it more improtance!

5 comments about The Colossus of Destiny.

  1. Do not listen to anyone that tells you this is "genius" or "have an open mind". It's total garbage. If it's a wall of sound, then it is also a wall of poo. A waste of every single penny. Not even worth listening to. Save yourself the time and money. I wish someone had warned me.

All that being said, I am a Melvins fan. I just felt stupid for buying it. Maybe that's their point? I won't pretend to understand people I don't know. They still put out music I love (Nude with Boots, 2008). Go snag that album instead.

  2. I've been a Melvins head for about a year now, and it won't take long before they completely take over your music taste. I finally saw them live with Big Business last night. They were just incredible, with two drummers and a stunning stage prescence; The band left the crowd sonically deaf. Before they went on I picked up the album I've heard nothing but bad things about; Colossus of Destiny. All the reviews and people I've talked to come to the conclusion that this is just a tedious and whacked out noise record. Luckily for me, I love the Melvins freaky noise experiments. King Buzzo's EP's "Porg". Houdini's "spread Eagle Beagle". And Their most viciously odd album 'Honky' is probably my favorite release of theirs.

We popped this in driving back home from the show, and wow what a an acid trip this album is. I couldn't explain the strange transcendent soundscapes they create here, but it's very surreal. You kind of lose track of where your thoughts are going after about 20 minutes and slowly let it consume you. With creepy voice samples, UFO inspired keyboard ridden gestures, and just a brain swallowing doom vibe to the whole thing. 'Colossus of Destiny' is an hour of deadly abstraction that paralyzes and moves at the same time. All leading upto a soul swallowing version of their gluey porch treatments opener 'Eye Fly's', never sounded more earth melting. REALLY open minded fans know this is a great record.

The thing is; All the Melvins albums that are cult appraised (Houdini, Stoner Witch, (A) Senile Animal)are just really damn good music. But the mainstream fish are too easliy drowned in crappy repitive plastic music to notice. But the Melvins albums like this one, 'Honky' or 'Eggnog' are their challenging releases, and people just complain that their too weird or difficult. But think about how many accessible mind blowing albums they've released. They are the best band out there so when they decide to throw me something different I enjoy the musical challenge. It's a rewarding way of listening really.

But It's understandable why this one is so frowned upon, this is some really out there stuff. And probably the only one I wouldn't smoke out to. Whatever that means to you. But all in all, this is a wild Melvins ride and they've haven't failed me yet. That's alot more than I can say for the rest of the popular music world.

  3. Then you obviously don't know the Melvins. The Melvins have the tendency to just not care about anything and to have a sense of humor. If you're a long time fan of the Melvins and was totally caught off guard by it then you obviously haven't been paying attention. I mean, this is the same band that started a "fan club" and told fans to send five dollars and they'll give them exactly what they deserve, and then responded by not giving them anything. This is the same band that made Prick. It makes perfect sense that they'd play this live without warning their audience and then releasing it without warning as well. It was a big, elaborate joke that I think is totally hilarious, considering the club locked their doors for the event. That said, even though this was just a huge joke, I do really like this album a lot. I enjoy noise artists such as Merzbow and Masonna and I like industrial acts such as Throbbing Gristle and Skinny Puppy so this album isn't something that I find totally unapproachable. The sound on here reminds me of some of my favorite industrial artists, and it makes sense, considering King Buzzo cites Throbbing Gristle as an influence. This album is definitely harsh and is definitely unique in the Melvins discography. This album features a lot of distorted sound, high end screeches, and sampling. This album sounds something like a combination of the Melvins sludginess, the density of some Skinny Puppy albums, the abstract arrangements of Throbbing Gristle, and maybe a little Merzbow and Lustmord thrown in for good measure. Oh, and the version of Eye Flys on this alum completely tears, and in some ways it's better than the original . It's much noisier than the original and much more agressive. I'd recommend this for fans of Fantomas' Delirivm Cordia, the album Absolutego by Boris, Throbbing Gristle, Merzbow, and the David Scott Stone noise sets the Melvins featured on their last tour with Jello Biafra

  4. It seems to me that most people on here hate this album and write it off as a bunch of noise; which it is, but it is good noise. I listen to this album quite frequently at work as it provides a nice background to the whiny servers I have to deal with. I am a fan of Fantomas and Lustmord so that might be why I like this. I also really like Prick as well but not as much as this. It takes big balls for any band to play this live and then release it to their unsuspecting fans. I can see how many fans would feel cheated upon their purchase of this masterpiece; I would have too had I not been farily warned by a friend. I wasn't totally convinced after one listen but the more I listened to it the more it grew on me and it gets more airplay than say the Joe Preston solo ep or The Crybaby which are both great in their own right. Plus, after recently re-watching Forbidden Planet, I can't help but think this album is the Melvins' version of that movie's soundtrack.

  5. It's just freakin great, but probably not for all you "rockers" out there. Noise.

  1. I remember listening to this cassette when I was 17 yrs old and now, 15 yrs later I'm still listening to it. And I think its just as good today as it was back then, yeah the music is a bit on the garage band side but hey- thats whats great about it since the songs are all live. Reminds me of the times I have seen them play and I will always keep that close to me. This album has alot of special memories for me and my friends. I am so glad I was able to get this in the CD version so I can now share it with the youth of today.

  1. I really loved the Red Elvises, There vocals remind me of the awesome belting vocals of Rose Christair! the gothic metal vocalist from seattle that makes you want to cream your genes when you see Rose perform live! the Red Elvises Rock!

  2. This is a great disc to pick up if you want the Red Elvises experience. This is a representative selection of their concert song list. But trying to put them on a live record is difficult since they have so much personality and the shows are a lot of fun.

I think what I'm getting at is that I was expecting a little more. The band has a lot of funny little things to say between songs (some are on the record), but most tracks do not; the songs fade in and out of silence. This doesn't reflect the amazing rapport the band earns with any crowd. I expected to hear their usual, like "Show us your beers! Beer makes us sound better!"

I was concerned with sound fidelity as I was thinking about buying this. Well, the sound is almost *too* good; the vocals and lead guitar stand out, leaving the bass and rhythm guitar less present. I guess if you crank it with the bass up and the treble down you can try to recreate the live show sound. But all in all, it sounds too polished to be a live album. The Red Elvises are a band that makes their money on great shows, and this disc doesn't quite get there. I enjoyed the actual live sound than the live-album-sound. But perhaps that's just me.

I'm giving this four stars because it is a great colleciton, and the Red Elvises are a great band -- probably the best band nobody's heard of. Not five, since the live show experience could have been put on disc a little more faithfully.

The album is a great introduction to the Red Elvises but you really should go see them live. You won't regret it.

  1. How can this guy even be serious? Of course I'm referring to the trogladite making mention of this not being a children's cd and how he was suprised... It's HENRY ROLLINS! Where has this guy been and why werent his parents chemically castrated at birth? Anyway, HEnry is the man and continues to rock even without a band. Pull your finger out aof your @ss and listen to him and you might learn something.

  2. This is mis categorized as a children's CD. It is NOT a children's CD. The intro drops the F* bomb (I didn't listen past that).
