  1. The Bruisers brought the sound of British oi! and americanized it. they set this great sound in blazing motion over these smokin' tracks that are early demos and some live songs. The tunes deal with good skinhead themes, and are true to life.

5 comments about 8/24/00 - Jones Beach, New York.

  1. Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This show is the second out of three shows at Jones Beach, and continues Pearl Jam's mini-growth spurt at this location. The previous night was pretty average and unremarkable, and the local finale the following night was absolutely stupendous. This middle child of the New York residency is a very solid performance. It's definitely better than the first night, and serves as a warm up for the following show in which they pulled out all the stops. In this bootleg, the performances by all band members are solid and no-nonsense, with especially fine renditions of the rockers "Last Exit" and "Spin the Black Circle." The band is especially strong in this evening's extended jams, really getting a groove going in the extended takes on "Daughter," "I Got S**t," and "Rearviewmirror." The set list is rather average, as compared to the overall series, but there are a few rarities like "Dissident" and "Rival," both of which are played energetically tonight. If you are in the market for a few good examples of the American bootlegs, this is a solid performance, and is a good instance of a strong show. But it is overshadowed by the gig the following evening, which is one of the best in the entire tour.

  2. I attended this concert and, for some reason, I didn't enjoy it as much as when I listened to the CD. I think at the show the sound didn't reach me as well as I'd have liked, but on the CD, I could hear everything I missed at the concert. Best of the sets I've listened to so far; and I'm not just saying that because I went to this one.

Just one note to PJ: please, PLEASE play "leash" again, somewhere, anywhere, I don't care where; just play it.

  3. This show was better than the first night, and had KRockRadio broadcasting it live. The weather was better, and so was the setlist. The version of "Daughter" followed by "It's OK" was one of the finest things I've ever heard. It ranks up there with the "Rockin' in the Free World" live from the MTV Video Awards.

    Good disc, good night, goobye.

  4. Pearl Jam's second night in Long Island equals the first night in intensity as they rip through top notch versions of "Hail, Hail", "Spin The Black Circle" and "Last Kiss" as well as stirring versions of "Porch" & "Black". They close the show with a strong version of "Yellow Leadbetter" which in previous shows had been a bit languid, but they step it up here.

  5. My first pearl jam concert ever, and, of course, I could afford the massive ticket price (looks like ticketmaster is laughing it's arse off right now). I ended up going with my mom, because hey, it is also a free ride. After a great set by Sonic Youth (My mom's comment: "This is F***ing art?), Pearl Jam opened with a bang, and a few of the songs from Binural. They got the classics "Courdoroy," "Daughter," and a great "Evenflow" with an eatrh shattering guitar solo by Mike. They also did no a cover of some band (well, I've never heard of them)'s song "It's Ok." Truly a moment that brought me to tears. The double euncore was a plus, but missing in action are "Rats," "Blood," "alive," and "Deep."

Overall a great CD, although porbably not the best of the bootlegs.

5 comments about The Live Record: Witless Banter & 25 Mildly Antagonistic Songs About Love.

  1. THE BAND:
Dance Hall Crashers are a 3rd wave ska band. Unusually, there are no horns, instead 2 female vocalists. So this album is a collection of ska and punk songs with a slightly softer edge due to the female vocals. If you like Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less Than Jake then you should check it out.

    THIS CD:
As for this particular album, the sound quality is excellent so there's no worries that it's a live recording. And the "witless banter" between songs gives it a bit of personality. Yes, the vocals are fast and hard to understand (not unusual for this style), but you can always look them up on the web. 25 tracks means this is like a Best Of. Dance Hall Crasher aficionados will probably want all of their studio albums instead, but most other people will be very happy with this CD.

  2. I just bought this CD and absolutely LOVE it!! I saw DHC in concert about 8 years ago in Hawaii and it was one of my all time favorites! This CD really brings back great memories of how GREAT they sound live! It's so upbeat and catchy!

  3. This is my first intro to DHC. I am a big fan of groups with intelligent or interesting lyrics (TMBG, Barenaked Ladies, Nerfherder) and used the Amazon recommendation to look into them. I figured this would hit their better songs and let me decide if I want to pursue them further.

The problem with a live album is that it is harder to understand the lyrics so I am not sure if I would like a studio album since I am such a lyrics fan. They seem like a fun band with lots of energy and would be a good live show. However, I don't like how they drop the F-bomb a lot.

Overall, it is likely a very good album for DHC fans but maybe not a good starter's album.

  4. To anyone reading this review, BUY THIS CD! I bought it after not knowing many DHC songs and it knocked me off of my feet. The CD was instantly on the list as one of my all time favorite CD's. There isn't one song on here not worth listening to. Trust me, it's the kind of CD you listen to in your car and decide to keep driving around, just so you can keep listening to..alright maybe I'm the only one that happened to, but trust me, there is not one song on here that you won't want to listen to. SO BUY IT ALREADY!

  5. If you're only going to own one DHC CD, it should be this one. It is a bit of a greatest hit compilation (though I miss Pick Up Lines and Setting Sun and some others) and many of the songs are better than on the studio recordings. I'll probably never get to see them live, but obviously they are meant to be heard that way.

If you can sit still through this CD, then something is wrong, because its mostly fast with many great lyrics.

Word of caution: DHC and the Ska sound is not everyone's cup of tea. But that is their loss.

    Enjoy.

5 comments about 10/12/00 - Kansas City, Missouri.

  1. I was at this very gig and this 2-CD/27 track band-released title MORE than serves the purpose of the show as a precious memory for me.Doesn't the band switch their setlist around often when they were recording these shows? Are they still recording their live concerts?Tunes I was so glad to get to experience once again were "Do The Evolution","Light Year",the classic "Even Flow","Spin Of The Black Circle","Better Man",the political statement "Jeremy","Black" and "MFC".A should-have.Superb sound quality.A+

  2. Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. As a collector of all of these crazy Pearl Jam bootlegs, I have found that many of them are so great, and a few are so bad, that you have tons of things to say about them. This performance in Kansas City is a good, competent performance, and is a little better than the tour average (when you look at the whole series overall), but there's not really much to say about this one. There are a few goodies in the set list, like "Release" which is always an effective opener, a dark and mysterious "Sleight of Hand," and the long-lost B-side "U." Mike McCready lights up "Nothing As It Seems" and "Even Flow" with more intense solos than usual (he can still crank 'em out after all these years), while the couplet "Untitled" and "MFC" makes an unusually late appearance in the encore to good effect. Eddie Vedder forgets significant chunks of lyrics in "Jeremy" and "Rearviewmirror" but he is saved in both cases by the band's strong performances in those songs, plus the helpful crowd. Eddie isn't too talkative tonight, but he does make a quip about the then-current Napster controversy, claiming that Napster was the only place to get a copy of "U." Of course, that's where Pearl Jam got their only copy.

  3. Being in the first 5 rows, sometimes I think that I can hear myself on the CD's! They didn't play many surprises that night, "U" stands out as the only rarity. Ed forgets the words to Jeremy but he finds his place when the crowd keeps singing. Overall, a great live Cd, if you can only get one, buy the last Seattle show...

  4. Well, I have listened to the cds, and they're awesome. The song selection is great, very rockin'. The downside is Eddie's voice, which sounds a little weary and worn. He's straining a bit and so melodious, it ain't. But if you like your live stuff raw and basic, a great show.

  5. I haven't listened to the cd yet, but I was at the show and it was amazing--I know you can't capture the feeling of "being there" on a cd, but I'm sure it will bring back great memories of an awesome night....

4 comments about Concert Classics.

  1. It is a bit surprising that a bootleg release taken from a concert is so readily available, as Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider have taken tremendous strides over the years to protect the artistic integrity of the band.

Taken from a 1975 concert, the four cuts sound as if they were recorded directly from the sound board with no post-production work. The cuts are Kometenmelodie, Autobahn and Morganspaziergang (Part 1 & Part 2). Though the title for the last number may be incorrect, it could be the way the band had it identified on the song list.

Concert Classics is really of interest to Kraftwerk fans and demonstrates how transfering the studio work to a venue was difficult back in the day. At one point, Hutter apologizes to the fans for the technical glitches.

With the brevity of the CD - and Morganspaziergang Part 2 being faded out - it makes one wonder if the entire concert was recorded, or this snippet was the only material that made it to tape.

  2. This is what I would call "classic" Kraftwerk, Kometenmelodie, etc, meaning their work before The Man Machine and Computer World. It's a very good album. It is recognizable as the song from the studio album, but has enough live improvisitation to make it interesting. My only complaint is that it isn't long enough.

  3. A short but very good recording of Kraftwerk in concert. There are a few pops and buzzes that in no way take away from the music. Other than that the sound of the disc is clear. The songs were played in a crisp, spirited, and professional manner. Kraftwerk obviously wanted to get them right.

I played the disc more than once and still want to hear it again. It sounded to me that they enjoyed playing that show, and were having some fun as well. Nothing wrong with that.
Makes me wish for more live work from Kraftwerk.

  4. Well, a slice of live KW from their early period. The technical shortcomings of this recording are soon forgotten as the music takes you into the surreal world of Ralf and Florian. I always wondered how they did it live. Anyhow, after you've heard Autobahn and other albums from this period, get this album. The sound is actually quite good, very stark with no post-production so it's very honest. The performances are excellent, there is of course some improv and the versions differ from the originals enough to stand alone. Also, listening to this you can appreciate the fact that the audience was hearing and watching something extremely unique at the time, a live band playing totally electronic instruments. There is also an intimacy of the performance that is nicely captured on this recording, which doesn't seem to have any reference as to where/when it was recorded. The technical shortcomings are a bit of hiss, some hum, but I found that once they get rolling on a tune it's not that noticeable. Recommended for KW fans of any period.

  1. This album is hard to find b/c it's good, and b/c the record company, Watermelon records I think, went bust, I think. The Gourds new record company is Sugar Hill Records. Also signed Sam Bush and other bluegrass favorites.

  2. If you can get your hands on it, it is worth every penny if only to hear their version of Gin and Juice (originally Snoop Doggy Dog). Around the net, popular wisdom is that the cover is by Phish or Ween, but THIS is it so find this album and buy it!!!

  3. I love Gin and Juice, some friends from Fayetteville introduced it to me over the Fourth of July weekend and I had to get the CD the only way to get it was over the computer. I wish it was more popular so maybe we could hear it on the radio sometime.

  4. The Gourds flat out rock and this album is outstanding. There's nothing better than rolling the bones, tossing back cold skeet, and jamming to Gin & Juice.

  1. I have just recently gotten into the Toy Dolls; I was lent a couple of their cds and I can't believe I've never heard them before! Olga is an incredible guitar player/songwriter. If you're into the Ramones or The Dickies, then check these guys out. This live cd isn't a bad place to start, also check out "Our Last Album?" or "Absurd Ditties". I could go on about these guys forever - check em out - punk rock done fast and catchy with a sense of humor, like it should be.

  1. This is a great introduction to a great band. It's also a great overview for all of us who already know and love Imperial Teen. Their music and live show is sweet in so many ways. It's sweet in the 'great' way. It's also sweet, because the band is so sweet. It was one of the warmest and most melodic shows I've ever seen. So, this CD is a great souvenir of the concert experience.....If you're in the mood for a sexy, poppy, melodic, sweet band, check this out!
