- ...but that's not the case here. Steve Earle and the band put on a great show, and fortunately it was recorded, but the sound lacks low end. I suspect the problem is the mastering, and not the recording itself since everything else seems right. This was my first Austin City Limits disc, and it will be my last. There's no excuse for this.
- This shows that Steve Earle was at the top of his game before all the self imposed destruction. He left the top and came back to the top. If you are a fan then you should own this. I am not usally fond of live cds/albums but this is one of the few exceptions.
- One rarely gets the opportunity to re-approach a classic album such as Earle's "Guitar Town" with fresh ears. But that's exactly what this CD and DVD provide with their looks at Earle's 1986 Austin City Limits appearance, expanded from the 30 minute television edit to the full hour performance. Riding the crest of his landmark debut, and with half of his follow-up, "Exit 0," in his hip-pocket, Earle lights up the stage with a giddy passion fueled by his incredible initial cache of material.
Listeners who've worn out their original vinyl will be renewed by the sparkle Earle brings to the stage. Dressed in a white t-shirt and jeans, he looks the role of the dreamers who populate his songs, cruising their pickups and homemade muscle cars through small-town America. This first blush of performing bravado winds the clock back on an album that's become an Americana staple: Earle performs everything from "Guitar Town" save "Someday," and works through half of its follow-up. His band translates the songs to stage with few changes, roughing up a few of the album's tidy edges with live vitality.
Whether unwinding the freedom of "Guitar Town" or wallowing in the emotional scars of "Little Rock & Roller," Earle can't help beam with the pride he has in his songs. The closing "I Love You Too Much" and encore of "San Antonio Girl" find the singer wringing every last drop of enjoyment out of his time on stage. Save for a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper" Earle "made all these songs up," and a more compelling collection of vignettes and characters would be hard to find.

- There has been a vast amount of concert and studio material finding its way to CD and album from The Stooges and Iggy & The Stooges that it is oftentimes a tough call where to start...or what is actually relevant.
This collection culled from a series of September 1973 gigs at the Whisky a Go Go and a 1974 San Francisco concert is about as solid a release available; Iggy (Pop) Stooge is holding things together, the band is in good form and the audience is enthusiastic. The photo collection from the performances are an added bonus and the entire package is solid.
This is California Dreamin' from a decadent proto-punk perspective, but demonstrates that there were rare moments when an artist who was quickly losing a battle with personal demons could still deliver the goods.
- If you're a deep fan you won't be bothered by the bootleg qaulity of the tracks. Iggy's speaking voice is heard among the music culled from 1973 and 1974 gigs. Bass is strong, audience resonates.
It appears that the famous photo seen on the Live In Michigan CD is taken from the '73 show herein. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Some hideous, some beautiful photography in the booklet.
Prince...bend an ear, baby.
- 'California Bleeding' brings us die hards three(3) live concert snippets. Two of the three are from a five-night stay the Stooges played at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in September,1973.Stooges fans, please take note:these tracks are NOT of the same that were released on the French label Revenge, titled The Stooges-'Live At The Whiskey'.The show on THAT disc was from the Sept.16 gig.The tunes on THIS disc are from the Sept.15 and Sept.19 gigs.Probably not much difference, but they are culled from another show.Sound quality seems to vary on certain cuts.I,personally was impressed with "Open Up And Bleed",the rarely played "Johanna" and performance art-like "She Creatures Of The Hollywood Hills".Noticed that the Stooges fifth member(?) keyboardist Scott Thurston was playing some pretty mean harmonia here and there. No better than 'Double Danger'.
- This is raw. This is very nasty nasty rock n roll made by some very intense guys. It's live, and it's desperate. Recorded at various L.A. nightspots, including the Whisky..this album captures Iggy and the stooges and their ferocious, seat of the pants best. "Take it easy brother, take it easy brother.." Buy this cd only if you wanna get down n dirty with the Igster.. if not..check out the slick new remix of raw power. That rocks, but CA Bleeding is truly RAW. Cut down to the bone.

- beware, of all the bootlegs and live recordings I have with jt (and that is a lot) this is the worst, jt is so wasted and it is in no way fun or entertaining, wayne holds the songs together, but I get depressed eveytime I try to listen to it, buy belfast rock, panic on sunset strip or why not max's...
- First off, I love Johnny Thunders and Wayne Kramer but his CD of some pretty sad concerts is awful. Johnny sounds like is is at the height of his addiction and is often lackluster or incoherant. Wayne's guitar work is fine. I was looking forward to a meeting of the two but this was disjointed. I can see why they didn't stick it out. Once again, I love Thunders but I felt sorry for Kramer to have to work this way. Also, the sound sucks. If you need this for your Thunders collection, go for it.
- As much as a huge MC 5 fan that I am,I can't BELIEVE I've never even heard of this short-lived punk 'supergroup'(if you care to call it that). After former MC 5 guitarist Wayne Kramer was released from jail in 1979,he apparently teamed up with former NY Dolls guitarist to form this side project,Gang War.Turns out Gang War never did release an actual lp,but there are a few live recordings of their several live performances they did.Think one factor that I really liked about this seventeen track CD was the element of surprise here.Could NOT believe some of the tunes that turns up here, like MC 5's "Ramblin' Rose", Thunder's "London Boys", Nancy Sinatra's smash hit from way-back when, a slammin' effort of "These Boots Are Made For Walking", Chuck Berry's "Around And Around", Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" and Kramer's "Hey,Thanks". I mean, is this JUST a fun record or what? Very much recommended, if you like what you read here. Sound quality is good, too.
- This cd is a mix of two seperate Gang War shows, and on the first show the band is in pretty good form and the sound is pretty good. It really does sound like a cross between The Heartbreakers and the MC5. Johnny's guitar is there in all it's buzzsaw glory, and every once in a while Wayne lets some wild acid drenched lines fly, and their styles really complment each other pretty well. The band mixes it up with some raunchy rock and roll, playing a mix of Johnny and Wayne's tunes with some great covers (who can forget their version of These Boots Are Made for Walking or Chuck Berry's Around and Around?) To sum it up, the first 3/4 of the cd is some dirty rock and roll.
However, the show that starts with The Harder They Come (which is the same material as on Live at the Channel Club) has Thunders completely out of it. By this point (as we learn in the surprising in depth liner notes) Johnny's wife has just left him, and, true to form, he immedietly started self destructing. So he spends half of these last 5 tracks berating the audience between and during the songs (The Ten Commandments is particularly hard to listen to).
If you're a Thunders or an MC5/Wayne Kramer fan, this is a CD that you want. The first 3/4 of this cd has both of them in fine form play some raw and wild rock and roll with a punk bite to it. If you're just getting into these guys, maybe this ain't the best place to start. Do yourself a favor and make sure you got the Heartbreakers LAMF The Lost 77 Mixes, Thunders' So Alone, and the MC5's Kick Out The Jams first. If I could, i'd give this 3 1/2 stars, but because we're talking about punk royalty here, I'll round up.

-
I thought this show in London was better than their previous night there, I think it has one of the better versions of Black which the crowd really gets into towards the end of the song, Eddie isn't very talkative but for the most part he seems in a good mood and Matt is having a more fun tonight with the drums ecspecially on Immortality which Eddie remembers most of the lyrics, all in all its a good show better than average but not their best European show.
- There's a lot not to like about this show. Start with some unfortunate lyrical stumbles on Corduroy, Dissident, and In Hiding early in the set- the latter is absolutely ruined, which is a shame because it's such a great song. Just as importantly, the encore is a scant six songs- this would be great for any other band, but for Pearl Jam, it's a night off. By ending the set with six standards, it was no doubt a crowd-pleasing show, but it wouldn't have killed them to throw a "Baba O'Riley" or "Yellow Ledbetter" at the end.
- Pearl Jam is the best live band on the planet. This is an incredible concert that will be looked for years from now, when it's out of print. The band is flawless, energetic, playful, but most of all outstanding. Some of the band's most enigmatic material is on display in this rare experience. Classics like SOmetimes, Hail, Hail, ANimal, Habit, Off he Goes, not For you, Immortality, ALive ( a brilliant performance), Black. Oh, I could go on all day long. This is the band at one of its finest moments. Rock on, pearl Jam!!!!!
- This is my favourite bootleg from the series because I was at this gig & it was the first time I'd ever seen PJ live. The atmosphere was beautiful, total strangers hugged me during the show & said things like 'isn't this fantastic!' It was the first time the band had played in England for about 10 years & most of us had waited that long to see them. Every time I listen to this CD it brings back the rapturous happiness of that night.
My only disappointment is that they didn't play 'Porch', 'Angel' or 'Breath' at this gig. Then it would have been perfect.
- I think the US fans will really get a kick out of the Europe series. The audiences in Europe are alive and kicking through the entire shows... singing, clapping and cheering the entire time. Some may wonder why PJ would release an entire tour on CD... might seem like overkill to some. But the band are kind of like the Dead or Dave Matthews in the respect that no two shows are alike... heck, no two versions of a song are alike. Therefore you will find that many reviews can be very subjective. For instance.. this show has my absolute favorite version of Daughter... it is haunting and thickly layered. Ask around though and maybe I am the only one who feels that way...that is the beauty of this series. So should you get this show over another.. well I put it near the top of the Europe shows (along with Verona and Katowice 2).

- Man, anybody who has seen BTE live in concert at either HOB or Tipitina's knows they put on a GREAT show. Wow, everybody knew every word to every song. Lots of hot LSU girls too!
- Better Than Ezra is good on record and unbelievable as a live act.
I think they were unfairly tagged as an alternative group when they first came out with the hit single "Good". This is a band that cannot be categorized in any manner.
There are 3 things that make this band a great live act;
1) The songwriting is very earnest and personable;
2) The band plays with a lot of energy. It seems as though they are more excited to be playing then for you to be listening and
3) Singer Kevin's Griffin's interaction with the audience.
Because you cannot pigeonhole them into any type of music, their live show offers a wide, a mine a real wide variety of music. They rock out, they do a little rap, they do tender ballads, they do extended jams, they noodle on their instruments.
This cd is a decent representative of their live act but it is no substitute. They in betweeen song banter, as well as when they (out of nowhere) go into cover songs are integral parts of a live Better Than Ezra show.
"Good", "King of New Orleans", "Extraordinary", and "Desperately Wanting" are songs that really come alive on the live CD.
If you ever get a chance, do see this band live especially in a small venue. They are the most likeable band around
As another reviewed said, they are ridiculously underrated!
- This CD is an awesome, concert-like experience. If you can't see them in person, this is the next best thing.
- Live At The House Of Blues New Orleans is a great set from a great band!
- I have been waiting for Ezra to release a live album, and I'm thrilled. I purchased the DVD and the CD and both are worth every penny. While no recording can entirely capture the "live show" experience this is a noble effort. I would recommend it to anyone Ezralites and newbies alike.

- I anticipated buying this release on Amazon , especially after reading 5 star reviewa. I was disaappointed .Two songs , i think they are titled Death Is Not the End , and This is the Sea , are great , but much of the album ,and it is a double C D , ( and especially the fiddle , ) sounds the same , with virtually none of the sounds I love on a live alvum , to wit the crowd.
- that it had been the case. That what?
that the best d*mn live band ever had recorded a live album sometime in the mid/late '80's when they were at that awesome full throttle force. Then, magically, it appeared, ten years or so later. A fitting musical coda to an out of control, always on the edge, and always insanely musical fairytale. The people behind these performances knew what we all knew, that there had to be a document other than the myriad of badly recorded bootlegs. ... Here it is, in all its brilliant glory. If you never knew who they were, and never saw them, it won't be quite the same, but it's all here, you can just imagine it Mike, Anto, Steve, etc .. thanks for those wonderful shows. Magnificent.
- From the opening soulful exuberence of Dylan's hopeful "Death is Not the End" to the poignant and soothing lullaby "Saints and Angels", The Live Adventures of the Waterboys is an orgasmic experience replete with scorching guitar rifts, sizziling fiddle playing, a sonic saxophone and, of course, Mike Scott's spiritually penetrating lyrics. Live albums are too often poorly recorded attempts at capturing the enthusiam and soul of a band's heart, but not here; for this album is a well produced and sonically breathtaking affair that takes you on a journey through Mike Scott's world, where we witness his sometimes biting reprisals of world leaders who rule with a despotic hand (notice his dedication on "We Will Not Be Lovers"), as well as his heartrending displays of human compassion and his desire for human reconciliation on such songs as "The Thrill is Gone/And the Healing Has Begun", "The Pan Within", and "Spirit." The music races from traditional style Irish ("Meet Me at the Station") to furious rock and roll ("Savage Earth Heart"). An album that will truly take your heart to places outside this earthly realm and all its mundane experiences, and leave you gasping for breath at the end, The Live Adventures of the Waterboys is a pure joy to any and all who will offer it a listen. Thank you Mike Scott for an album that heals, especially in these dark times that we live in today.
- this represents the pinnacle of the Waterboys' achievement - demonstrating how music can really take you to a higher place. The band fits so well together, and the atmosphere of their live shows comes through so strong!
the second disk (Glastonbury Festival) is absolutely stunning, including stellar versions of The Pan Within, Spirit & Savage Earth Heart. Every Waterboys fan must have this!
- i just listened to the double live cd.It was fantastic. Where have these boys been.It is some of the best music i ever heard. They are so tight cant believe they are not popularand marketed mainstream.I'm 50 years old and been to thousands of concerts and never heard of the "Waterboys "until yesterday.A friend turned me on and i love them .I am ordering their catolog of albums today. They have all the elements, rock ,jazz, blues, soul, it all can be heard. I'm so blown away ,i can't believe what i've been missing.I rank them up there with the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Moody Blues.Listen soon u won't be disappointed.

5 comments about Out West.
- Into the new millennium and Gomez together with Muse, Mercury Rev, Elbow, Coldplay and The Flaming Lips (from "Soft Bulletin" (1999) onwards) were the bands that really excited me the most. (Previous to these recent years Kings X and Dream Theater "did it for me" in the 90's, Marillion were "my 80's" band together with Simple Minds, Big Country, Waterboys and U2. My 70's favorites were largely Genesis, Rush and Jethro Tull.
This live album from 2005 is, for me, a summation of what is great about Gomez. Two great and distinctive lead singers, fantastic musicians who play great rock music. The first Gomez album I bought was "Liquid Skin" (their second) in 1999 and shortly after that got their tremendous debut "Bring it on" from 1998. Six tracks from each of these are here live with, for me, the highlight being a stellar performance of "Here comes the breeze" (from Bring It On). Two tracks from "In Our Gun" (2002), three from their 2004 effort "Split the difference", a cover of Tom Wait's "Going Out West" plus Nick Drake's "Black Eyed Dog" (a "combo track with Gomez "Free to Run" from "Bring it on" and a B side track "Do's and Don'ts" round off a tremendous live album.
Certainly one of the great live albums of the new millennium from one of the great bands of these modern times, a tremendous experience in today's age - real musicians playing real instruments and playing with energy and passion in front of a very appreciative audience at the Fillmore in San Francisco.
Certainly one of my favourite live albums over the last 35 years here are some of my other favourites...
- "How the West was won" from Led Zeppelin (1972)
- "Made in Japan" from Deep Purple (1972)
- "Yessongs" from Yes (1973)
- "Welcome back my friends" from ELP (1973)
- "Too late to stop now" from Van Morrison (1974)
- "On your feet or on your knees" from Blue Oyster Cult (1975)
- "Live in London" from Bruce Springsteen (1975)
- "One more from the Road" from Lynyrd Skynrd (1976)
- "Frampton comes alive" from Peter Frampton (1976)
- "Live Bullet" from Bob Seger (1976)
- "Seconds Out" from Genesis (1977)
- "A Live Record" from Camel (1978)
- "Bursting Out Live" from Jethro Tull (1978)
- "Two for the Show" from Kansas (1978)
- "Playing the fool" Gentle Giant (1978)
- "Waiting fro Columbus" from Little Feat (1978)
- "Strangers in the Night" from UFO (1979)
- "Live Rust" from Neil Young (1979).
- "Paris" from Supertramp (1980).
- "Exit...Stage left" from Rush (1981)
- "Under a blood red sky" from U2 (1983)
- "Stop making sense" from Talking Heads (1984)
- "Live in the city of Light" from Simple Minds (1986)
- "Live adventures of the Waterboys" from the Waterboys (1986)
- "Operation Livecrime" from Queensryche (1991)
- "Without a safety Net" from Big Country (1992)
- "Secret World Live" from Peter Gabriel (1994)
- "Together in Concert" from Tim Finn, Dave Dobbyn, Bic Runga (2000)
- "Live Scenes from New York" from Dream Theater (2000)
- "Hullabaloo" from Muse (2002)
- "Out West" from Gomez (2005)
- "Instant Delivery" from Flower Kings (2006).
- "Okonokos" from My Morning Jacket (2006)
I really enjoy this album (especially up loud when driving), if you do get it I hope you do to.
- This album disappoints. The album is poorly mastered and the songs do not do justice either to Gomez's sound in concert or to that on their albums. Gomez favorites, such as Free to Run or Make No Sound, lack the special licks that made them stand out. No violin, no intricate chord progression; the detail is missing, and the bass overwhelms the composition that you expect from Gomez. Overall, the album sounds flat and lifeless.
- I've attended multiple Gomez shows and this 2 CD set definitely captures their energy. Three January 2005 concerts in San Francisco were condensed into one show-length setlist for this release. Luckily over half the songs come from the first two Gomez albums, classics that the band has failed to match. "Here Comes The Breeze" and several others clearly eclipse their respective studio treatments.
- Compiled from three nights of material at the Fillmore in San Francisco, the two discs of Out West project an image of a band whose strengths seem only to be bolstered in the midst of a live performance. British five-piece Gomez have always had their share of jam-rock influences, but have managed to tread a cautious line between the infectiousness of `90s Brit-pop and the extended solos of a Bonnaroo Festival, without giving into either side's dangerous excesses. Out West is no exception, finding the band alternating between effectively concise songwriting and long-winded instrumental passages, often in the same song. The twenty tracks here are mostly comprised of Gomez originals, plucked from their four previous albums, with a couple Tom Waits ("Going Out West") and Nick Drake ("Black Eyed Dog") songs thrown in for good measure.
- Landon Moblad
Synthesis.net
- In 1970, The Who released Live at Leeds, setting the benchmark for many live albums to follow. Now Gomez has released Out West, recorded live at the Fillmore West in San Francisco earlier this year. Not all bands can pull off a live album. Often it's just a ploy to fill in time, or a way of making some cash after the band have called it quits. Gomez doesn't fit this description. This double album displays the work of a band showing no intentions of slowing down.
The band have recorded four studio albums, debuting in 1998 with Bring it on. Out West contains twenty songs, including at least two tracks from each studio album. Blending psychedelic rock with hard blues, sounds from the 1960's echoed with today's electronic overtones. The songs are all very loose, each band member drilling their instrument to full capacity.
The highlight of the album would have to be the drum and bass work. Best heard during `Here comes the Breeze', `Ping One Down' and `Get Myself Arrested'. I've only heard better on Live at Leeds. For those lucky enough to have witnessed Gomez's live performance, this album will bring back some cherished memories.

- I just saw these guys last night (with Joe Ely) and there are none better. Jimmie Dale and Butch sing and play in absolute harmony. Buy this recording while you can. When it's gone-you lose.
- I became aware of Butch Hancock when he opened for Cowboy Junkies in '89.
I became aware of Jimmie Dale Gilmore when i bought the import of this album long before it was available on a US label. Butch and Jimmie Dale are, individually, excellent songwriters and performers in a "high lonesome" style. Together they are dynamite. From the opening track, A.P. Carter's "Helo Stranger" on to the end, with Butch's truly surreal "West Texas Waltz" (with some of the most outrageous rhymes ever perpetrated with a straight face) there are no low points in this album, only, as Lucy van Pelt once put it "ups and upper ups". Jimmie Dale's "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" and "Dallas" are meditations on the two sides of the coin of the urban experience. "Howlin' at Midnight" could be vintage Hank Sr. -- i understand it's by Lucinda Williams. Butch's "Two Roads" and "Already Gone" illustrate what Joe Ely has described as Butch's tendency to write "seven minute novellas", but they're fine stuff, for all that -- especially "Gone" with its transition from a song about blighted love to its pointed commentary on the treatment of First American tribes. "Firewater (Seeks Its Own Level)" always put me in mind of a friend who used to play bass in another band. "Special Treatment" (with Paul Kelly) is a song about a real Australian Government program to take Aborigine infants to be raised in white homes to help the Abos "acculturate" faster... Sad and quiet, it's horrifying in its implications. This is a Very Special Album -- two of the Austin/alt.country movement's leading lights, together, live, at their peak.

5 comments about Americans Abroad!!! Against Me!!! Live in London!!!.
- 52 minutes of humor and politically driven punk rock mayhem. The untouched production makes the listener believe they are truly part of the show. As an added bonus, the group performs a band new song ("Americans Abroad" - how appropriate) and includes a video of their performance of "Problems"
- If you're a fan of Against Me! you understand that vocalist/guitarist Tom Gabel has a penchant for surprise. No one ever knows what to expect from Gabel and his ever-changing lineup--not even Gabel himself. Nothing is ever planned. Each of the albums Gabel has recorded for Fat Wreck Chords evolved out of collaborations with myriad sidemen, friends, and producers.
The full impact of this free-spirited approach towards punk is found on Americans Abroad, which documents a show the band played at London's Mean Fiddler earlier this year. It's a tremendous show. The current lineup, which includes Warren on drums, James on guitar, and Andrew on bass, delivers an eminent performance filled with extreme political material backed by subtle social observations that exposes the onslaught of madness gripping the world.
Every song on Americans Abroad is a gem, but a few reach orgasmic ecstasies. "Unprotected Sex with Multiple Partners", the classic "Reinventing Axl Rose", "Pints of Guinness Make You Strong", "Cliché Guevara" and "Turn Those Clapping Hands Into Balled Fists" are frenzied blows to your conscience with Gabel, James and Andrew pounding the audience out of complacency. Gabel swings wildly between imploring the audience to pay attention to demanding response. It's a show reminiscent of late 70's L.A. punk as practiced by The Germs, Flesh Eaters and Randoms, and Gabel appropriately steals the intense energy of those bands and explodes it on Londoners with the iconoclastic flair of Guy Fawkes.
Americans Abroad also features the previously unreleased title track, and a bonus video that features parts of the Mean Fiddler gig. More importantly, it's an album that excites, motivates, and showcases Gabel's wry wit and the band's monster chops. It may take you a couple of seconds to recognize some of the songs because they've all been re-worked for this tour. However, it's worth the wait on these tracks to discover the new paths Gabel leads you down.
That Against Me! made a reputation for itself by constantly moving the boundaries of punk music is a feat in itself. The performances on Americans Abroad display not only a penchant for surprise, but a willingness to continue experimenting with a style that went dormant too quickly. When punk was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world, no one figured it would last. Thanks to groups like Against Me! punk will continue to lead its fans into rich musical terrains.
- I haven't seen them live but anyone who has seen the DVD, "We're Never Going Home", would agree that this sounds far different. Tom never sang the whole way through a song on the DVD, often taking breaks and passing the mic around for fans to sing. I would rather get what their live show is really like because I don't think this is it. Although I am a fan of Americans Abroad, the song.
- i love against me but this live record isnt very good. crowd is almost inexistant, songs are slower than the originals and the band seem bored. ive seen them and they are defintly better than this live
- Ive been an Against Me! fan for a long time. i have all there cds and seen them twice. they are the greatest this cd is good piece of what they sound like live. i cant wait for there next cd! BUY THIS ALBUM YOU WONT REGRET!
