  1. I will preface this review by saying it only gets a good rating based on the music and ideas of Jello Biafra. It is great to hear these previously unreleased songs, although I would feel less dirty if I bought a bootleg. If I had to rate the integrity, it would receive a zero. One will discover that the songs "Straight A's" and "Short Songs" were previously released on "Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death" and the quality was better. This is because Biafra and Alternative Tentacles did not release this; his spineless, money-grubbing ex-bandmates did. You will find their lousy attempts to bilk as many dollar bills out of thier legacy on Manifesto Records. They advertise "New Artwork!" and "Digitally Remastered!" to hook die-hard fans into purchasing lame Winston Smith rip-offs and sound quality that one would be hard up to distinguish from the original recordings. It is sad that Ray, Klaus, and Peligro would resort to such cheap marketing ploys to recycle the ideas of their former frontman. They are clearly just trying to gain publicity for their pathetic reunion despite their claims of 'doing it for the fans.' I am not just saying all of this because I am embittered by their twisted lawsuit against Biafra-check out the reunion for yourself! Go to their new website and read how much they love themselves! It would be funny if it didn't cast such a dark shadow over an otherwise highly respectable reputation. Biafra was the brains and talent behind most of the DKs work, and these new releases prove it-why else would they not write any new music? Worse yet, without Biafra, they have become one of the least respectable punk bands ever. Even stooping so low that they have shamelessly okayed the censorship of their own songs in video games and public performances.

  1. I loved this; I sort of knew it would never be particularly popular, but for some reason that never seemed to matter. It's just one of those albums that I can put in and listen to any time. Fun, clever, catchy, occasionally perceptive - what more could you ask for?

"Little Joe and Hoss never did this on Bonanza!"

  2. Originally released in 1988, as this was the New York alternative punk band's first effort. Believe I saw them open for Nirvana many moons ago. During their time together, Alice Donut put out seven CD's and many EP's from 1986-96. Tracks here I got the most out of were the awesome "Green Pea Soup", "New Jersey Exit", the unexpected Donovan cover "Sunshine Superman", the snippet "Love is A Thickle Thing" and semi-humorous "Tipper Gore". Might possibly appeal to fans of the Butthole Surfers, Jesus Lizard, Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth.

  3. These guys were pretty ingenious in their day. This is one of their best offerings, but their albums are all unique and strange enough to be the best on any given Tuesday.

They have, by the way, reformed recently and are playing scattered dates at home and abroad. Their latest album, "Three Sisters" is the first of a 3-part installment of CDs purportedly mixed on a mac.

You really can't go wrong with this group, this album, or any album they've put out.

  4. I have had a vinyl copy of this album from when it first came out, played the living dead out of it.Ive been searching for it on CD for yrs now and finally found it.
These guys are the genius of progressive alternative rock!!
Great hooks, lyrics all telling stories of infamous tabloid identities

  5. Alice Donut was one of the core bands of Alternative Tentacles back in the late '80s and early '90s. Their first album catches them at their rawest, but also their most fun. "Donut Comes Alive" brings across the presence of a live Donut performance - pure, wild, New Jersey punk, maximum rock n' roll fun - without being an actual "live" album. The album is so full of great songs that pointing out any in particular to look at would be a waste of time - pick anything and you won't go wrong. It's 100% pure punk fun.

Musically, Donut's style has much in common with the psychedlic punk style of the Butthole Surfers, but I regard Donut as being the more straight-up fun-to-listen-to of the two. The Surfers are great, but in a different way. Alice Donut's work is better informed by a sense of humor and a lively attitude than the Surfers, who usually come off as being much darker and more serious. However, this does not mean that Alice Donut does not pack some weight - in keeping with many Alternative Tentacles bands, Alice Donut follows in the footsteps of the Dead Kennedies with thier lyrics - heavy sarcasm, but always socially and politically relevant. Buy this album, sit back, dig the lyrics and enjoy the wild, slapdash music!

  1. This album is a bootleg and is not authorized by Iggy Pop. Neither he nor his record label get paid when you buy this disc. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to be sold here.

  2. This is one of the best iggy live cds, hard to find and has only one fault which is why I give the 4 stars . The sound quality changes in volume on track 8 Buttown it drops and then ascends but even with this flaw it rocks . Iggy should have recorded it better and released it on Virgin . I have a few other live cds of his that have the similar problems . It's unfortunate that a well recorded and produced live cd has not been released by his label. Iggy are you listening?

  3. This CD rules!!! This a great introduction to Iggy Pop, to get a feel for what kind of artist he is. The fire and passion he displays on this cd is incomparable to his mostly mellow studio albums. This is the next best thing to seeing him live. Buy this before you buy anthing else of his.

  1. Ian Dury and the Blockheads were one of the most unique acts in the history of late-Seventies/Eighties British rock. Bawdy, punky, dancey pub-rockers with the funkiest white rhythm section of all time (Norman Watt-Roy and Charlie Charles), all led by the lascivious sense of humor of our favorite cockney-to-the hilt imp Ian. As someone who saw them at the Bottom Line in New York (they did four nights there one incredible week in '79) and also saw them open for Lou Reed at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey about six months later plus a show at NY's Peppermint Lounge a year or two later, they were as good as a live act gets. You were entertained, overwhelmed, prodded, punked and pimped until the Blockheads turned your entire body into their own personal rhythm stick.

This set is a completely satisfying show (not going to get into reviewing each individual song) that almost matches (but not quite) the raw newness the band had a dozen years earlier at their inception and I would have given this cd five stars but "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" (their anthem) is nowhere to be found. What gives with that? They used to do that song every set. Had to have been a technical problem with that one or it would have been on there. If it had been, this would have gotten the max rating.

Still looking for a great-sounding set from their heyday of '77-'80 but can't find one anywhere. Now THAT would be an all-time cherished item.

We miss you Ian. A LOT. Thanks for the fabulous music from a true original.

  1. This album is a must for any true bad religion fan. Some of the songs on this album have never sounded better. Greg Graffin and the boys play their souls out, and it speaks. "American Jesus" is sublime. "Portrait of Authority" is perfected, and "Change of Ideas" sounds truly overwhelming. "Part III" is my personal favorite, and very fitting for the current politics, even though it was written so long ago. This song got me hooked on this album. When I drive, I always turn up this song. It, like Spinal Tap, reaches 11. "Dream of Unity" is also on this album, a hard to get gem. Greg Graffin's vocals are human, live and spontaneous, as in the version of "Generator" which is beyond compare. The liner notes are great, and they have descriptions of all the places they went, and where they recorded each individual song. There are some anecdotes that just boggle the mind.

Everybody who claims to like Bad Religion should have this CD. It is without a doubt my favorite live album of all time. The added heaviness makes the songs that much better, especially with such heavy hitters as "No Control." "Do What You Want" is also great. The whole album is great. Every critically minded music lover should feast upon the harmonic cornucopia that is Bad Religion! What other band has a PhD from Cornell leading the fracas? A band for the ages.. oh yeah, "Along the Way" is killer as well. Just buy it already!

    You are the government!

  2. This is a very solid CD, like most of BR's are.

BR's approach was quite interesting. Instead of putting a lot of money and effort into capturing a couple of shows, then cleaning up the results in the studio, they recorded continuously with basic equipment through their whole tour -- and picked the best cuts with only modest editing.

(Nitpick: I'm not fully convinced that it works on every track - the background vocals were not captured well on some songs.)

But good grief, there are 27 recordings on here! Even a nominal BR fan can find something to like on this album, and the band really loaded it to the rafters. This would be a "two CD set" from anyone else, but BR really delivers!

I'm so glad too, that they included some of their rarities on here. You might not get a chance to hear those, even if you do attend a live show.

Definately give this CD a chance, if have already bought a couple of BR releases, and are considering getting more.

  3. this is one of the only live albums id ever spring the payola for. the raw energy in the performances is just unbalievable. after seeing B.R. live about 6,7 years ago i was very pleased with the album for it brought back that show. this is definetly one of those albums you can listen to over and over driving everyone around you crazy unless there die hard fans too. id give this three thumbs up along the five stars. two of my thumbs and one from the guy standing next to me.a most definet worthy purchase.

  4. This CD is amazing. I give it four stars only because of certain songs that weren't included.

I'll review each of the three previously unheard tracks:

Dream of Unity: This song is famazing. That's all there is to it. It's a slow dirgey song about unity (duh.) It's just an incredible put-up-your-lighter song. They should put this on a mainstream release sometime. 7/5.

It's Reciprocal: Not bad at all, a lot better than some of the filler on Gray Race. I really like it. Good lyrics too. 4/5.

Tested: I just didn't get into this one. I'm not into it at all. 2/5.

Overall rating of the three new songs: 4/5.

Overall rating of the CD: 4/5.

Overall recommendation: Buy this, just for Dream of Unity and It's Reciprocal, not to mention some really great live versions.

Yes, I'd have liked to see some other songs like Anesthesia, Only Entertainment, Entropy, Walk Away, 21st Century Digital Boy, Inner Logic, Infected, and Handshake, but such is life.

  5. As someone who has listened to Bad Religion since they first came about, I am not only impressed by this album, I am obsessed with it.

This band found their style very early in their carreer and they have not changed it at all, even with all of the MTV pre-made poo that we are subjected to on a daily basis. Bad Religion still have the ability to write their own lyrics, and sound exactly the same as they did 10 years ago.

This album is living proof that this band sounds just as good live, if not better, than they do straight out of the studio.

I love hearing a song that I know and love in a different manner. It's especially good if you are drunk and want to sing along, but feel bad that you can never sound as good as they do.

If you are looking for a greatest hits album, get All Ages, if you wanna hear some of your favorite BR songs LIVE, get this one. Hell, get them both. I think that anyone who has anything to say about how the world is today needs to listen to a good BR album. Long live BR!!!! Come play in WV dammit!!!!
