  1. This is an outstanding collection of punk anthems, an essential six-pack of CDs which you can't beat for the price. Even most of the live renditions sound good!! A definite 5-star set.

  1. Made the 9 hour drive to be at this show. The whole thing was on HBO as well. Too much is missing from this CD set. The show was over 6 hours long and many of the best artists are not featured here at all.

  2. What artists deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but have been overlooked for whatever reason?
Here are the top 20 according to an internet poll:
    1. Pete Townshend (solo)
    2. Peter Gabriel (solo)
    3. Van Halen
    4. Lynard Skynard
    5. Genesis
    6. Alice Cooper
    7. Moody Blues
    8. Iron Maiden
    9. Rush
    10. Foreigner
    11. Chicago
    12. John Mellencamp
    13. Steve Miller
    14. Doobie Brothers
    15. The Cars

    17. Blondie
    18. Yes
    19. Thin Lizzy
    20. Styx

  3. Fantastic concert, especially John Mellencamp's version of ROCK IN THE USA is not to be missed, great energy. Jerry Lee Lewis, the Late great Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, the list goes on, the CD is worth a listen.

But when is this concert going to be on DVD?? It is long overdue! What's the story, put the concert on DVD already for everyone to see. I was overseas serving my country when the concert was broadcast, so I missed out, help us out who missed the concert!

  4. I've never liked the idea of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; it seems to me that institutionalizing the music and setting up some kind of semi-official Rock Aristocracy defeats much of the spirit and thrill of the music. It also seems to be yet another excuse for a lot of Rolling Stone nerd-critics to try and attach their names to those of their musical heroes.

And, with few exceptions, this album proves how misguided this whole concept was. The inclusion of Melissa Ethridge is annoying but predictable; the fact that she gets more tunes on this 2-CD package than Springsteen, Dylan, Johnny Cash or any other artist is beyond belief. It would be understandable if she did something special but she is dull as dishwater, screaming "Hello Cleveland!" (that's a deep sentiment repeated ad nauseum by almost every singer on this CD) before screeching "Can you remember the fine days when Rock and Roll...wore a drrrrrrress?!?!?!" Kind of an odd sentiment coming from a woman who refuses to wear dresses, but that's neither here nor there, the important thing to keep in mind is that Etheridge can't sing and has an extremely hard time finding the melodies of the three classic tunes she tackles. The Ronettes and Supremes were due more homage than this.

Disc 1 is rescued, temporarily, by Al Green, the most underrated singer of his generation, who turns in gorgeous renditions of "Tired of Being Alone" and "A Change is Gonna Come," but Chrissie Hynde does her very best to break the mood by screaming the name of every Cleveland suburb at the top of her lungs before phoning in a lackluster mumbling of "My City Was Gone."

After that things pick up for quite a while. Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Fogarty all deserved more space on Disc 1, and Jerry Lee Lewis rocks on Disc 2. Springsteen's "Shake Rattle & Roll" is surpisingly slow and doesn't display the Boss's usual energy, but he understands what he's doing, something that can't be said for every act on this CD.

Once The Killer and The Boss leave the stage, the show collapses. Natalie Merchant, Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby and especially the Allman Brothers all phone it in, stumbling through dull performances of songs it makes no sense for them to sing. Browne's version of Bob Marley's great "Redemption Song" is downright shameful, and it is embarassing to listen to Slash trying to remember the guitar parts to Hendrix' "Red House."

Most annoying of all are the constant reminders that the show is in Cleveland, Cleveland rocks, this is for Cleveland and, over and over and over, "Hello Cleveland!!!" Outside the city limits, WHO CARES?!? For whatever reason, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has decided that Cleveland is the center of the universe...which probably goes a long way towards explaining why this album, and the Hall itself, have been ignored everywhere outside of Ohio.

The Hall may have been a good idea, and the concept of this CD--a group of Rock giants covering classic Rock tunes in front of a live audience--is a good idea. Unfortunately, the reality of the Hall and the CD fall far short of the dream.

  5. THIS RECORDING IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE EXPERIENCE OF THE OPENING OF THE HALL OF FAME. A LOT OF ARTIST THAT PERFORMED THERE WERE NOT INCLUDED ON THIS CD. MAYBE ANOTHER VOLUME WILL FOLLOW WITH ERIC BURDON, BON JOVI, CHUCK BERRY, HEART, LITTLE RICHARD.... THERE WERE SO MANY IN THE 7 HOUR CONCERT, THAT A SINGLE CD COULD NOT COVER THAT CONCERT. IT WILL BE A COLLECTORS ITEM FOR THE AVID ROCK N ROLL FAN. I WAS THERE, AND I'LL NEVER FORGET IT AND IF YOU MISSED IT, YOU'LL NEVER GET THE CHANCE AGAIN EXCEPT TO HEAR US 65,000 FANS SCREAMING ON THE CD.

  1. This is the complete Sham 69 collection. All the CDs collected together in a single box set. Main drawback with that is you literally get a box with the CDs not in a jewel case but in paper covers which of course can get eaisly ripped or damaged.

The CDs themselves are great. Just what Sham were all about raw, simple punk played with conviction. All the classic Sham tracks are here and production quality is fine. Yeh we all know they kind of lost their way in the end but for those first few albums they brought out.....classics!

Well worth buying and well worth the 5 stars.

  1. I was expecting poor quality recordings (& I got poor quality recordings, but hey, it's punk rock!). But what I wasn't expecting was poor quality mastering. This has obviously been mastered on someone's home computer and they haven't even bothered to deselect the 2-second pause option between each track. This is not usually a big problem, except this compilation is two CDs of live music. So 2-seconds of silence between each track sounds pretty awful! ...And they also haven't managed to put the track markers at the beginning of each track. Instead, each track starts about 3 seconds into the song. The CDs are basically un-listenable and whichever way you try to package it, you can't blame this mess on punk rock!!!

Get Sid Sings instead. They did a bit of a cut and paste job with the set list running order but it's a far superior package.

5 comments about Singles.

  1. All great singles but the perfect box set would be including a copy of all of Nirvanas's singles as follows:
    1.Love Buzz (Bleach)
    2.Blew (Bleach)
    3.Molly's Lips
    4.Sliver
    5.Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nevermind)
    6.Come As You Are( Nevermind)
    7.Lithium (Nevermind)
    8.In Bloom (Nevermind)
    9.Oh, the Guilt
    10.Heart-Shaped Box (In Utero)
    11.All Apologies (In Utero)
    12.Pennyroyal Tea (In Utero)
13.About A Girl (Unplugged In New York)

All of the above were singles once comercially available to buy in the shops. I know it only supposed to be singles from 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero' albums but the third single from 'In Utero', 'Pennyroyal Tea' was not even included. Those which havn't been included are the ones most people want as a result you have to pay rediculous prices for them because they are no longer made and have become very rare. For example you can now expect to pay no less than £500.00 for a copy of the Pennyroyal Tea or Love Buzz singles, high demand, no supply. This could have been avoided if included on the Box.

  2. First off for that money you can buy all of the major releases and pick up most of the rest of the material on a well-crafted bootleg. The only song that has been difficult to track down is the awesome demo version of "Aneurysm" on the Teen Spirit single, which they are now releasing on the new box set. The single set is almost as bad an example of branding and repackaging as Nirvana's 2002 album aptly titled...Nirvana; Kurt is spinning in his grave. Maybe if they included ALL of the singles it would be a better gem, but save your money for the new box set, kids. I've seen the track list and it shot up to number one on my Christmas list. By the way Kurt didn't kill himself, so bugger off with all the selfish talk. 'Who did?' you may ask...I don't know, but I think Courtney does. Peace.

  3. Well, I know a few people do, because there were a few reviews here, but it has a mere 45,000-something sales rank. In comparison to Neverminds 500-something after 13 years then thats pretty bad. Even Incesticide and Bleach have better sales-ranks...and those didn't even go platinum, well actually Incesticide eventually did.
Okay, more people should know about this besides Nirvana die-hards, its a very good compilation...but it ISNT great. The reason why this isn't great is, alongside the very high price of $60+ this also has only six singles. I know all the singles are awesome but in total Nirvana made approximately nine singles from Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero and Unplugged. Only the singles off of Nevermind and In Utero appear here. The singles that are missing are 'Love Buzz' (off Bleach, buy it at most Nirvana fansites), 'Sliver' (off Incesticide', buy it at almost all Nirvana fansites) and 'About a Girl' (off Unplugged, buy it at a store near you). These are not the most important singles but they still belong in the box set.
Right, now with that out of the way I can focus on the qualities of the box set. Well for one all of the popular singles are here, they are 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Come as You Are', 'Lithium', 'In Bloom', 'Heart-Shaped Box' and 'Rape Me/All Apologies'. Another thing is that almost every song here is good. That includes even the b-sides, especially on the In Utero singles. If you dont have $60 you can always buy this for about $30 or even less on ebay. And another thing, you have to respect Nirvana for single-handedly destroying horrendous pop bands like Bon Jovi and Poison and bringing other great bands to the mainstream like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam (Alice in Chains too).
Even if you hate the crap-punk and the nu-hell metal (much like I do) thats out today then remember: IT WASNT NIRVANAS FAULT! IT WAS KORN AND BLINK 182, WHO SUCK! Just keep in mind that this is for die-hards ONLY, unless you love Nirvana then you will just say to yourself "this wasn't worth $60+". But I still love this as I am a die-hard.

  4. Kurt Cobain rocks he is the best rock musician in history.

  5. Trust me i know what i'm talking about.
Reasons NOT to buy this box:
You can buy most of the singles in this box off amazon for about 7$
This box is missing 3 singles that come to mind. Sliver, With a dive (live) b-side, (it's annoying to go get this) Pennyroyal Tea (because this is not in this box it has gone out of production so the price for this has risen dramatically, on ebay you may find it for 20 US dollars if you're lucky. This includes the I hat myself and i want to die demo)
And the Jesus Lizard split single Oh the guilt (nirvana) and Puss (Jesus Lizard). Oh the guilt reached #9 on the UK charts, and now. you have to buy it seperatly from all the other hits.
And that the new box With the lights out is coming out, and will have the b-sides (probably) and more stuff.
    Reasons TO buy this box:
None come to mind besides the fact that according to me every song on here is great. The b-sides include some masterpieces of Nirvana's work. If you're not after the b-sides, go buy the greatest hits, and get the singles on one album and more.
