  1. This cool box collects the Damned's 5 singles released on the stiff label. The first 2 singles are off the superb debut Damned Damned Damned and the final 3 are from the underrated follow up Music for Pleasure (C'mon now it did have a have a few good gems tucked away there) New Rose is noted for having been the first single released by a British punk band.

    Disc 1

    New Rose

    Help (Beatles cover)

    Disc 2

    Neat Neat Neat

    Stab your back

Singalong Scabies (instrumental version of stab your back)

    Disc 3

    Problem Child

    You take my money

    Disc 4

    Don't cry wolf

One way love (great slide guitar intro)

    Disc 5

    Strecher case baby

    Sick of being sick

Strecher case baby was originally a freebie given way at shows to celebrate the band's first anniversary. Also the Strecher case baby single has a cool cover it looks like a skull from far away but up close its a woman sitting in front of a mirror (Def Leppard used the same type of cover on the retro active album). This was available on a single disc compilation called Skip off school to see the damned in 1992 on the Demon record label. Each single also has its cover faithfully reproduced as well.

  1. All great singles but the perfect box set would be including a copy of all of Nirvanas's singles as follows:
    1.Love Buzz (Bleach)
    2.Blew (Bleach)
    3.Molly's Lips
    4.Sliver
    5.Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nevermind)
    6.Come As You Are( Nevermind)
    7.Lithium (Nevermind)
    8.In Bloom (Nevermind)
    9.Oh, the Guilt
    10.Heart-Shaped Box (In Utero)
    11.All Apologies (In Utero)
    12.Pennyroyal Tea (In Utero)
13.About A Girl (Unplugged In New York)

All of the above were singles once comercially available to buy in the shops. I know it only supposed to be singles from 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero' albums but the third single from 'In Utero', 'Pennyroyal Tea' was not even included. Those which havn't been included are the ones most people want as a result you have to pay rediculous prices for them because they are no longer made and have become very rare. For example you can now expect to pay no less than £500.00 for a copy of the Pennyroyal Tea or Love Buzz singles, high demand, no supply. This could have been avoided if included on the Box.

  2. First off for that money you can buy all of the major releases and pick up most of the rest of the material on a well-crafted bootleg. The only song that has been difficult to track down is the awesome demo version of "Aneurysm" on the Teen Spirit single, which they are now releasing on the new box set. The single set is almost as bad an example of branding and repackaging as Nirvana's 2002 album aptly titled...Nirvana; Kurt is spinning in his grave. Maybe if they included ALL of the singles it would be a better gem, but save your money for the new box set, kids. I've seen the track list and it shot up to number one on my Christmas list. By the way Kurt didn't kill himself, so bugger off with all the selfish talk. 'Who did?' you may ask...I don't know, but I think Courtney does. Peace.

  3. Well, I know a few people do, because there were a few reviews here, but it has a mere 45,000-something sales rank. In comparison to Neverminds 500-something after 13 years then thats pretty bad. Even Incesticide and Bleach have better sales-ranks...and those didn't even go platinum, well actually Incesticide eventually did.
Okay, more people should know about this besides Nirvana die-hards, its a very good compilation...but it ISNT great. The reason why this isn't great is, alongside the very high price of $60+ this also has only six singles. I know all the singles are awesome but in total Nirvana made approximately nine singles from Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide, In Utero and Unplugged. Only the singles off of Nevermind and In Utero appear here. The singles that are missing are 'Love Buzz' (off Bleach, buy it at most Nirvana fansites), 'Sliver' (off Incesticide', buy it at almost all Nirvana fansites) and 'About a Girl' (off Unplugged, buy it at a store near you). These are not the most important singles but they still belong in the box set.
Right, now with that out of the way I can focus on the qualities of the box set. Well for one all of the popular singles are here, they are 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Come as You Are', 'Lithium', 'In Bloom', 'Heart-Shaped Box' and 'Rape Me/All Apologies'. Another thing is that almost every song here is good. That includes even the b-sides, especially on the In Utero singles. If you dont have $60 you can always buy this for about $30 or even less on ebay. And another thing, you have to respect Nirvana for single-handedly destroying horrendous pop bands like Bon Jovi and Poison and bringing other great bands to the mainstream like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam (Alice in Chains too).
Even if you hate the crap-punk and the nu-hell metal (much like I do) thats out today then remember: IT WASNT NIRVANAS FAULT! IT WAS KORN AND BLINK 182, WHO SUCK! Just keep in mind that this is for die-hards ONLY, unless you love Nirvana then you will just say to yourself "this wasn't worth $60+". But I still love this as I am a die-hard.

  4. Kurt Cobain rocks he is the best rock musician in history.

  5. Trust me i know what i'm talking about.
Reasons NOT to buy this box:
You can buy most of the singles in this box off amazon for about 7$
This box is missing 3 singles that come to mind. Sliver, With a dive (live) b-side, (it's annoying to go get this) Pennyroyal Tea (because this is not in this box it has gone out of production so the price for this has risen dramatically, on ebay you may find it for 20 US dollars if you're lucky. This includes the I hat myself and i want to die demo)
And the Jesus Lizard split single Oh the guilt (nirvana) and Puss (Jesus Lizard). Oh the guilt reached #9 on the UK charts, and now. you have to buy it seperatly from all the other hits.
And that the new box With the lights out is coming out, and will have the b-sides (probably) and more stuff.
    Reasons TO buy this box:
None come to mind besides the fact that according to me every song on here is great. The b-sides include some masterpieces of Nirvana's work. If you're not after the b-sides, go buy the greatest hits, and get the singles on one album and more.

5 comments about The Stiff Records Box Set.

  1. i found this in a used cd store for $15 bucks when i was 19 years old, i bought it because i liked elvis costello, but i found it to be one of my most treasured possessions. my car was broken in to a few years ago, and they got 2 of the best discs- i still listen to the leftovers but i'm always looking to replace it. totally willing to pay $50 plus- highly recommended.

  2. Don't be afraid to plunk down the $50+ dollars on this box set - its totally worth it. It features great songs you know by Ian Dury, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello, which are all great to have in one location. But the real reason for picking it up is the gems by the groups you probably never heard of. Roogalator's "Cincinnati Fatback" is a undulating slice of glutinous, dirty funk from Porkopolis. "Between the Lines" by the Pink Fairies is the most scorching, out-of-control bar blues since the Rolling Stone's "Rip this Joint." Tenpole Tudor generally rocks, as do Madnesses' early hits. And there's some hilarious novelties like "Kill" by Los Trios Paranoias that is a affectionate poke at the punk aesthetic, a dead-on parody right down to its two note guitar solo and uber-nihilist lyrics ("I wanna cut me liver out and pin it on yer braces!"). There's three disks of great stuff (the fourth disk is pretty weak, actually), and its amazingly varied and fun stuff, from solid pop to pub rock to new wave to unclassifiable stuff. Not every song is great, but enough are. Highly, highly recommended.

  3. Stiff Records was a renegade, independent record label formed in England that released all varieties of music from power-pop to punk to ska to reggae and everything in between. It was the label that artists like Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, Ian Dury, Madness, Devo, Tracey Ullman, Dave Stewart & The Pogues got their start on. From its creation in 1976 to its demise in 1985, Stiff Records took chances on artists and put out records that may have not been released elsewhere. The label's first release shows it knew what it was doing, it is the brilliant Nick Lowe single "So It Goes" backed by "Heart In the City". Stiff gave the artists the freedom to experiment and push the boundairies of conventional music. The four discs are chock full of great songs and you get a generous helping of them with each disc averaging about 20 songs. To be honest, not all the artists are in the league of the above mentioned ones and many of the songs that are included range from forgettable to just plain bad. But this shows the spirit of Stiff. They left it all out there, from good to bad, from normal to weird, you hear it all. Nick Lowe summed up the general feeling towards Stiff wth his ode "I Love My Label".

  4. The Stiff Records Box Set is one of those "best I ever bought" type things. With an average of 24 songs per cd, it was a terrific value, and I figure the only thing better would be to actually own the albums from which the songs came. Sure, the quality of selections is kind of scattered. And I do have the songs on album of some of the artists, so although they may be the best cuts of the collection, they don't hold much value for me. But the rest is terrific. For anyone who first got into music in the late seventies, (and didn't like Journey and the Bee Gees), it's like the best indie radio program ever. An all-time great.

  5. This Box set is very fun. There is so much to listen to that you never get bored of it. On the other hand, some of the songs are pretty terrible. There are great artists and bands such as Ian Dury, Jona Lewie, and The Pogues.

  1. This was my first jello biafra spoken word cd I have ever purchased, and it is truly amazing. Jello molds his sarcastic humor, intelligence, and capacity to think all into one great album. The first cd is probably the funniest, with things like 'Half-Time,' 'Depends on the Drug,' and 'Clinton comes to Long Beach.' But the talks on the death penalty and the space shuttle are true, and consequently scary as hell. The New Soviet Union is my favorite part of the first disc, and again is frightening, the comparisons that Jello makes.
The second disc is on censorship but covers a wide variety of topics. A lot of it is about the media and how politicians and whoever are trying to censor cds and shows even more.
The last disc is my favorite. The first and longest track is mainly about prisons, and some of the horrifying statistics and reports about them. Then comes 'Wake up and Smell the Noise.' It is truly a brilliant track, about 20 minutes of intelligence, thought, and everything you would want in a political type speech. I won't ruin it, however, but this cd is definitely worth buying. It will make you think, make you laugh, and is a must-listen for anybody even slightly interested.

  2. I am a huge Dead kennedys fan, and am very fond of Jello's sarcastic, biting ideas and sense of humor. But this album, being my first JB spoken word album, really astounded me. Jello pulls you in immediately ( 'Watch a tv news report with the sound off...' ), and keeps you hooked throughout the disc. I listened to the whole thing all one night, because I litterally could not put my cd player down and stop. By the end it was like 1:00 and I was exhausted and amazed. Everything he says is so true and relates so much to our lives that its almost scary. Jello Biafra is truly one of the great revolutionaries of our time (up their with Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn). Anyway, I can't wait to pick up Become the Media and I Blow Minds for A Living, and any radical activist, punk, anarchist, or hell, ANYBODY, should listen to this awesome album. It will pull ya in and open your eyes whether or not you want to. Great stuff.

  3. This was an amazing comeback for Biafra. After a long vacation, Biafra came back with this new 3 CD set, and he sure had a lot to say.

This album was more about his artistic "1984"-like visions than anything else. Much like his first album, Biafra dishes out more horrific visions and terrifying truths.

This album is worth the small price you'll pay. It's entertaining, and even a few years later, it's quite informative.

  4. With this release by Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys it seems that his mind is only getting sharper. The only problem with this album is that it is all true! And he has had to see the hands of censorship upon him with Dead Kennedys.

  5. Biafra talks about some very important issues that are funny , and frightening , but his voice is very irritating , and sometimes he drags on & on and forgets what he is talking about.
