  1. The Texas Western victory over Kentucky has got to be THE single most important game ever played in collegiate athletics. Only fitting that the soundtrack calls up the same emotion when you listen to it as watching the film surely does. Great songs, great artists, and great original scores. If you liked the movie, you gotta have this disc. GO MINERS!!!!!

  2. If you liked the movie, then you'll enjoy spinning the tunes from those days again. The music gave thid flick some flair and Alicia Keys does some great stuff to update some great old tunes.

  3. A few good songs but not many. Very dissapointed. Not enough scores from the movie.

  4. I bought this CD right after I saw Glory Road today. My favorite track is People Get Ready by Alicia Keys. This is a great song about how if we have faith in God anything is possible. I loved her soulful delivery on this song very much. The title track Glory Road is very uplifting. I love the choir singing on this track. I also enjoyed the track entitled I Will Make The Darkness Light. This is such a moving song about fighting for what you believe in. Alicia sounds so sexy on this song. There are also some classic R and B songs like Twist and Shout, Uptight, and Dancing In The Street. These are delighful songs to listen and move to. There is a song by Otis Redding entitled I've Been Loving You Too Long To Stop Now. This is a heartfelt sincere love song, and it is one of my favorites. This is a wonderful soundtrack.

  5. Too often it seems as if a soundtrack is a "stand alone" product to the movie. In the case of Glory Road, the soundtrack and movie brilliantly weaves the story of the Texas Western basketball team and the society it faced at home and on the road. Glory Road is by far the best sports movie produced for the big screen. The soundtrack should be a part of anyone's collection who not only has an appreciation of R&B, but who also wants to place the music chronicled in a historical context.

  1. This album was recorded 15 years after AMAZING GRACE, Aretha Franklin's groundbreaking gospel album. It's hard to top that album, but this is a nice collection nonetheless. You can tell that Aretha loves this kind of music. I wish she would do another album like this! Guests on the album include Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Jasper Williams, and Rev. C.L. Franklin, plus Mavis Staples, Joe Ligon, and her sisters, Carol and Erma.

I have to say my absolute favorite is her rendition of "Ave Maria". It's breathtaking, and one of the best versions I have heard of this song. Aretha sings standards like "Surely God Is Able" and "The Lord's Prayer,", and a scorching version of "Higher Ground."

Overall a really nice return to Gospel. Every Aretha Franklin fan should hear this cd!

  2. I started listening to Aretha franklin in the early 80's and I am just finding this album. This is a very spiritual moving and inspirational album made back in 1987 by The Queen of Soul. Aretha makes a very poinent observation that she was very happy to have her family there singing and praying with her including her two late sisters, brother, and grandmother the mother of the late REV. C.L. Franklin. My Favorite songs on the album are surley god is able, Packing up, we need power, and ive been in the storm too long. All these songs Aretha goes all out vocally on. Dispite the fact that Aretha's voice has changed she puts her heart and soul into this inspirational project. I am waiting for Ms Franklin to make another gospel album.

  3. I adore the "Amazing Grace" cd ( I have both versions, and still play them both regularly ). The music on this one, though, has that terribly slick, over-produced eighties sheen to it that I just can't get into. It has none of the soul that made "Amazing Grace" transcend all boundaries. The vocals are, as usual, incredibly moving. It's just the music itself that I don't care for. If you are a fan of newer RnB styled Gospel like Yolanda Adams and things like that, you might like this. I just found it "samey", much like the majority of Aretha Franklin's eighties recordings for Arista.

  4. Even though she has aged and such is displayed in her voice, the Queen's ability to use experience and such vocal control is unparalleled... I can hardly wait for the next gospel recording by the Queen!!! I LOVE YOU RE-RE!!!

  5. Overall, this is an excellent CD. No. 3 of Aretha's Gospel Epics.

There is some heavy preaching by Jesse Jackson and Rev. Jasper Williams. This may turn off some listeners, but it does give one the full impact of a religious service in an African-American Baptist church (minus the taking of collection).

Aretha, Mavis Stapes, and others handle the material excellently. They do Clara Ward justice on "Surely God Is Able" and "Packing up." "Be Grateful" is pretty good too as "I've Been In The Strom Too Long."

Unfortunately, there are two drawbacks. One is that this CD was not well recorded. You really have to amp the volume on this one to get it good. Secondly, years of cigarette smoking (or improper throat care) has taken much of the lustre from Miss Franklin's voice, which puts the performance level at a couple of grades below 1972's Amazing Grace or her 1956 debut "Never Grow Old" (a.k.a "Aretha Gospel").

In spite of that, it's a worthwhile and enjoyable purchase. But I wonder why it was out of circulation for so many years?

5 comments about Can You Hear Us?.

  1. Easily one of my favorite albums ever .
I love the very honest, simple lyrics ,the catchy beats and the passion with which they're sung.

  2. Very cool CD. Totally a Worship CD, as all of DCB's are. DCB Makes you rethink worship, not all worship bands make you do that, but I guess the most important thing is that bands worry about worship, for it to be just Worship to our Lord and not worship to the band itself. Loved it.

  3. So I have "Illuminate" and "A Collision" (the best CD of all time!) but decided that my collection was missing something if I did not purchase "Can You Hear Us?" I'm very glad I did! The CD starts off with "I Need Words," which is just David and an acoustic guitar and is sparse but beautiful. Then it goes onto track 2 with "Our Love Is Loud," a rocking song that is classic David Crowder. Track 3, "You're My Everything" is one of my favorites as David's voice is perfectly fragile and each inflection he sings fits with the emotion of the song. Tracks four and five are also very good songs that make you want to sing along. I have mixed feelings, however, with track 6, "All Creatures of our God and King." The tempo is kind of odd and it does not sound nearly as good as "All Creatures #2" that is on Illuminate. Oh well. "God of Wrath" is a cool song, but one of my favorites is David Crowder's cover of "Obsession" by Delirious. The song and theme work to David's strength and when he's singing "And my heart burns for you," you know that he truly means it. "My Hope" is also a very strong track on this CD that makes you want to sing the chorus with him. Track 10 is a cover of a Sinead O'Conner song ("Thank You For Hearing Me"), which works perfectly with a Christian song and David ends it with "My Jesus, I love thee; I know Thou Art Mine." Very cool. Then we have a cover of Matt Redman's song "Undiginified," which David also makes his own. Lastly, there is the secret song "You Alone" that finishes off the album beautifully with the repeating words "I'm Alive, I'm Alive." All in all, this is a very strong worship album. The cool thing about the David Crowder Band is that they can take any song and make it cool and put their own seal on it. Many bands don't have a signature sound or do covers that try to sound like the original (but usually fail). Not so with this band. His voice is filled with such passion that it makes you want to close your eyes and sing along. This CD, in my opinion, is not as good as "Illuminate" (which is definitely a five star album as well) or as good as "A Collision," (which is a six star album!). However, you can see how the David Crowder band has matured with each CD and are just getting better and better (I also think it is amazing how his 3 full length CDs here on Amazon all have an average rating of 5!). If you do not have this CD, I highly recommend because it has many good tracks and your CD collection wouldn't be the same without it. Rock on, David Crowder!

  4. This album is full of worshipful Christian lyrics combined with a sound that is very catchy.

The David Crowder Band has one of those sounds that continues to grow on you the more you listen to their music. It is very creative and very different.

There are several very good songs on this album and none that are bad. It is well worth a listen.

  5. Very gripping lyrics. Not as appealing as "Illuminate" project but still a must buy for any worshipers out there.

  1. I bought this for my Mother, a devout Christian now being tested with illness at the end of her life. Being blind and recently being diagnosed with Alzheimers, I look for anything that will bring her peace and comfort during these troubling times. I've found she can no longer listen to TV as she confuses it with reality. So I started buying her the music she's loved all of her life and it has really been a blessing for both of us. She can be highly agitated and I'll put on this CD and before you know it her agitation is gone and she's singing along with the group. I just wish it had about 40 songs as I have to play it over and over several times for her. Now I find myself singing along with the songs. I've now purchased her a couple of other CD by The Cathedrals and we love them all.

5 comments about Greatest Gospel Songs.

  1. This compilation is another winner, produced by Paul Williams for 'House of Hits Productions Ltd'.

Paul Williams also produced another fantastic Perry Como compilation for 'House of Hits' a year prior to this release called 'Greatest Christmas Songs'.

In both compilations, sound quality is superior and song collections is generally superb! Blending popular evergreens with songs that are much rarer!

The compilation is made up of 21 superbly sung and beautifully arranged Como treasures of the 'Faith and Inspirational' side of Perry!

This compilation shows that as well as handling a gentle but meaningful song of prayer smoothly, he can also belt out with pure excellence, a triumphant expression of a hymn or popular song of faith with superior control!

Here we see songs taken from two of Perry's classic albums of 'Faith and Inspiration': 'I Believe' and 'When you come to the end of the day' along with a blend of single and EP releases!

This album has be superbly mixed and re-mastered to a high standard which is most certainly what us Como fans really want!

The CD also comes complete with a well researched and informative set of liner notes, plus 3 nice shots of Perry included throughout the booklet and casing!

I can NEVER fault any of Perry Como's work, it is all unique in it's own way, just like the unique human being that he was, is and always will be regarded of by his millions of fans Worldwide!

So whether your feeling happy or sad, play this album to uplift your spirits, whether you want to hear a gentle song of faith or a patriotic song of inspiration. There is something to suit all tastes!

Some people feel that the version of 'Ave Maria' used should have been more appropriately one of the earlier versions. All the versions Perry has sung have been wonderful. The 1968 version included here does have a Christmas feel to it, but is certainly beautiful.

Also, 'Holy God we praise thy name', which is included in this collection IS NOT the complete version. It is missing the accompaniment of St. Patrick's Cathedral Boys Choir from the 2nd verse onwards. The actual recording included lasts 1:29 (approximately), however, within the booklet it states the time as being 2:43 (approximately) which in contradiction of the actual content within the compilation! It has been suggested that this was a partial take, before the addition of the Choir was included. So, in a way it is considrably rare taking that into consideration. It displays the stages thgrough the production of a song. If you had never heard the song prior or closely observed the liner notes stating the approximate running time, you would not be aware of this production error!

Having said that, BMG have apparently corrected the error and happily agreed to replace anyone's copy of the CD that has the errors on with the corrected version. This is obviously a sign of good service on BMG's side! Fair play BMG!

To be honest though, I am not particularly bothered. I will probably just end up purchasing the corrected version as well in the future! It is nice to have both versions if your a collector such as I!

'Holy God we praise thy name' is also avialable on several other compilations of Faith and Inspiration and Christmas songs, so keep your eyes on the lookout for them! Even so, the sound quality is by NO means superior to the quality within this compilation!

Finally, some people have remarked that 'Greatest Gospel Songs' is an odd title. Well, I suppose it is! We generally consider Perry's songs of this genre as songs of 'Faith and Inspiration'. They make it sound as if Perry will be singing 'O happy day' on the CD - wow! Wouldn't that be fun!

Keep these Perry Como compilation's coming!

A superb collection, well worth the money - like all of Perry Como's work!

    Matthew Long
(An enormous Perry Como fan of a much younger generation!)

  2. I actually bought this CD because of the beautiful old song "Good Night, Sweet Jesus," which I wanted to teach to my 3-year-old (he loves it). I haven't been able to find that song anywhere else! The only reason I give this album 4 stars instead of 5 is because I'm not crazy about a lot of the song choices. However, Perry Como's beautifully soothing voice makes up for it. And his version of "Ave Maria" makes it all worth it.

  3. There appear to be two different versions of this CD currently available which are causing confusion with reviewers. The first production run of this CD contained a number of errors the most serious of which was an abridged version of Perry's "Holy God We Praise Thy Name" where the hymn was cut off just prior to the St. Patrick's Cathedral Boy's Choir. The time given within the credits was correct but the actual track time was not. Other errors included monaural versions of stereo originals such as Perry's 1959 "The Lord's Prayer" and songs from his stereophonic album "When You Come to the End of the Day" released in 1958. Some reviewers claim that they have purchased copies within which these errors have since been corrected. If you have purchased the faulty version of this CD compilation it should be returned for exchange.

  4. I am delighted to hear that BMG has finally corrected the errors within this CD! That's wonderful news. The original issue was missing almost half of one hymn "Holy God We Praise Thy Name" while several of the hymns were in monaural instead of real stereo as they should have been! Good for BMG! I'm sending my old copy in for replacement pronto. Fans should know, however, that all of the songs from Perry's album "When You Come to the End of the Day" have since been released within two different compilations, one from Collectables and the other from Buddha. The Buddha compilation included full stereophonic versions of ALL songs including his 1959 recordings "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" for the first time in more than forty years. Nevertheless, BRAVO TO BMG! for correcting this CD!

  5. This CD is one of many recorded by Mr. C. I listen today to the contemporary religious recordings....only for a few moments.
Perry Como's The Lords Prayer and other (gospel) recordings surpass any other male vocalists. His range...his style and his phrasing are perfect for all of his recordings. He chose them with great care. He sings them because he means every word of them. That makes a great difference. So many recorded songs only for the money. He recorded, of course, for the income. He did not record songs only for the money.

Anyone who can listen to this CD and find fault...should wake up and smell the coffee. What I hear of today's recordings....makes me want to return to my selected...and paid for CDs, albums, 78s...45s..tapes... How good it is to hear quality recordings on CD. The man lived a life such as no other performer of his day....and as no other living today.

Perry Como Quality. critics only know where to find some excuse to comment. Let them list ones they think are better.

5 comments about Time Again: Amy Grant Live All Access.

  1. Having yet to see Amy Grant in concert, I was drawn to this album -- especially because it came with a four-song DVD of Amy doing some live performances. I enjoyed the body of the album quite a bit. I was particularly impressed with how well Amy integrated her contemporary Christian music with her regular pop; she really melds the two into a cohesive, non-alienating show. One would think Amy would have strung all her pop hits into a show, but she didn't. In fact, some of her biggest hits (such as "Find A Way" and the #1 hit "That's What Love Is For") are omitted in favor of lesser-known material like "Simple Things" and the exquisite "Stay For Awhile," an slow-burning anthem to old friendships.

So, if you like Amy Grant and enjoy live recordings, you will probably like this. Amy's voice sounds almost as good as it does on her records, but not quite. (However, I vastly prefer the original version of "In A Little While" to the new studio version tacked onto the end of this CD.) And Amy's band (particularly the bassist and the harmonica player) hit some sour notes; though the band is quite good overall.

Now, about the DVD. I get the sense that the DVD was a freebie to promote the full-length DVD that is available. Honestly, from viewing the selections from this bonus disc, I would certainly NOT buy the DVD. The editing is distracting and poorly executed. It's like the director wanted to make the show as jerky and difficult to focus on as possible. In the four cuts on the DVD, I didn't get any sense of what Amy Grant would be like in concert, because the cutaways were abrupt (apparently trying to be "hip"), and Amy's mouth was out of synch with the lyrics on the soundtrack. Just bizarre. I think I'll skip that DVD and see Amy the next time she breezes through town.

The CD is definitely worth owning; the DVD, not so much.

  2. AMEN amy - you rock...I saw you rock boston common a "couple" years back - thanks for your spirit, soul and voice.

  3. And the kids wonder why she's still a dominant force in Christian music, even though she hasn't had a number one pop hit in years. Well, she has a back catalog of 200-plus quality, honest, lived-in songs and a charming and lovably unadorned "Ideal Friend" public persona that no other CCM artist can touch. That's why.

As others have noted, she was sometimes given short shrift for her singing and songwriting abilities because of her unmatched popularity and her looks. But time has proven her impressively capable in both arenas. In fact, some of her lyrics are revealed as prescient and are even more powerful as she (actually, we) go through midlife. Sandi Patti was the premiere Christian vocalist in the 1980s but Amy was the impassioned voice of everyone's hopes and doubts.

A word of caution: If you're fixated on being able to sing along note-for-note with these classic songs, you may be in for a disappointment. Not only have the arrangements and instrumentation of her older synth-pop tunes been altered for a casual stripped-down feel but Amy is more experimental in her phrasing these days. if you appreciate the Frank Sinatra/Willie Nelson school of reinterpretation with each performance, you'll love this set. If you're interested in a perfectly recreated nostalgia session, not so much.

The constraints of the single-CD format cause some of Amy's trademark just-folks banter and pindrop-quiet stories of the DVD presentation to be lost. But this is a mandatory audio version for the car and iPod.

  4. Amy Grant may just be considered the greatest Christian Contemporary Artist in modern music history. She has both the commercial and critical success to back this up. It's hard to believe that Amy's career spans nearly 30 years. On top of achieving this success in the Christian Contemporary arena, Amy had a very successful "crossover" to the mainstream pop-music scene in the 1990s. Surprisingly, most of Amy's most successful material - in both the Christian and Pop arenas has not been on a live album. Yes, Amy released two albums very early in her career (1981's "In Concert" and "In Concert Volume 2"), but this did not contain the material that fans are most familiar with. It would be 25 years later when "Amy Grant - Time Again" would be released. This would be the long-awaited live album that would draw from her most successful material. Overall, this album while not perfect - does help to fill this one void in Amy's very successful career.

I can look at Amy Grant's career as encompassing three main phases. The first phase covers 1977 through 1981 (her debut self-title album "Amy Grant" through the "In Concert Volume 2"). In this phase, Amy definitely showed her youthful side (her first album was released while she still was in high school). For the most part, Amy did some nice songs and was able to establish herself as a Contemporary Christian Artist. In Phase 2 (this would cover 1982-1988, starting with "Age to Age" and going to this album "Amy Grant - The Collection"), Amy ascended to legendary status in the Contemporary Christian music-world both commercially and critically. This is where her husband to be Gary Chapman would begin to have an influence in her music. In this phase, Amy would show the most depth with her Christian music. When Phase 3 (1988 to present, starting with "Lead Me On" to present), Amy went into her full-fledged crossover into the mainstream (pop) music arena. 1981's "In Concert" albums do a great job at showing some of Amy's best live work from Phase 1 (in fact, many fans will find some really "hidden gems" in Amy's career on these albums). "Time Again" will focus more on her work from Phase 2 and Phase 3.

As mentioned, this collection does help to fill the void. It has its good points and weak points. Here are ten things to look from:

1.The collection draws its music from performances on April 11-12th, 2006. For the most part - there is something magical about hearing a great performance on a single night captured on a collection. For the most part, I find that when taking live songs from different concerts on different nights, the flow is disrupted. . However, this collection does a nice job at getting as close to creating a single night experience as possible.

2.The collection includes a CD and a "Bonus DVD". The "Bonus DVD" should not be confused with the separate full DVD release of "Time Again". It is important to know that not all of the songs from the April 11-12th shows are included on here. A more complete version is found on the full-length DVD. Songs such as "Carry You", "Lucky One", "Fathers Eyes", "El Shaddai", "Big Yellow Taxi", and "If These Walls Could Speak" are only included on the full DVD. "Lucky One" is also not on the CD, but is on the Bonus DVD. The band Rush released an identical CD copy to their DVD "Rush in Rio" - and it was a complete concert from a single night. I wish more artists would follow this lead.

3.The Bonus DVD didn't do a lot to sell me on the full DVD release. I found much of the camera work to flip too much between Amy and the band - breaking focus on the performance. There are split screens that are on "Stay For a While" and "Lucky One" which I also found to be very distracting and annoying.

4.The nice thing is the small venue that these performances were taken from. The performances were from Bass Hall in Fort Worth, Texas. I think the intent of having an "intimate" live recording is successful. The Bonus DVD helps to demonstrate this visually. In addition, Amy has a strong band backing her up - and this helps Amy make the most of this setting.

5.There is a very interesting version of "Baby Baby". Amy does a country-spin on the song. I felt this spin in a live setting was actually a better version of the song.

6.The version of "Every Heartbeat" is outstanding. It is the best live cut from the collection - the only problem was it was too short.

7.One can make an argument that albums such as "Lead Me On" and "House of Love" are not well represented on the set list. However I think a more glaring omission is that there is no material from "Unguarded".

8.The set includes an Acoustic "unplugged" Set midway through the performance. This is typical with most live performances today. This helps enhance the "intimate" setting of the show.

9.I liked the inclusion of "Believe" - the theme song from Amy's reality show, "Three Wishes".

10.There is a solid new studio version of Amy's 1982 show, "In a Little While". This new studio version not only has more of a pop feel than the 1982 version, but it also reflects Amy's maturity as now a 40 plus year-old woman. You will also hear more guitar on this version.

The liner notes include acknowledgements from Amy herself and producer Steve Bishir. There are also musician and songwriting credits listed. Overall despite some of the weaker points of this collection, I don't think anyone can complain about the quality of the performance. This is one that should help fill the void of the lack of a live album from Amy Grant and should also appeal to the mainstream fan.

  5. Before listening to this CD, my favorite live album was KISS ALIVE II Alive II, but no more! Amy leaves them in the dust! And without the blood, pyro, and makeup. Trust me, this one makes you want to scream! Rock On!

  1. Sounds Of Blackness was a group that although they had many hits with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis got lost in the shuffle. Everyone has undoubtedly heard SoB's Optimistic...if not then go get that song immediately somehow someway. This album is more of that type of sound as Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis do most of the production on this album. Sounds Of Blackness are a choir and they sound very terrific on this album and although there are some song interpretations that I have to skip, the majority of the songs are a good listen. My favorite songs include Soul Holidays, Its Christmas Time, and O Holy NIght. Pick up this album is a great way to enjoy the holidays.

  2. This cd is the most enjoyable christmas music you could listen to. In fact they had a live stage play back in 1992 and all of the songs had corresponding themes, I wish they would do it again because it was one of the best performances i've ever seen. Every time I hear this cd around the holiday season, it always puts a smile on my face.

  3. If you're tired of the typical Christmas songs then this is for you. The music is soulful and more geared for the R&B listener. This album takes the usual Xmas songs and adds "Blackness" and I would recommend this CD to anyone.

  4. This album is in frequent rotation of my more than one hundred Christmas albums. I first bought this ten years ago on cassette and just last week spent 99-cents on a cut-out CD version. [Evidently it was re-released in 2000 on the K-tel label.] This music is soulful, majestic, uplifting...and funky! Listen to their rousing version of "Children Go" or the pull-out-all-the-stops rendition of "Away in a Manger." It's impossible to sit still while you're listening to this. Executive producers are Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who produced "Soul Holidays" and "It's Christmas Time." If you're looking for a break from the umpteenth playing of "White Christmas," this album is guaranteed to ward off the Christmas Blues. RECOMMENDED

  5. When this group emerged a decade ago with the grand "Optimistic," taken from its debut album, their own bar had been raised. "A Musical Fantasy" was the ensemble's second release and it is an above-average production.

Musical treasures on the disc are: "Soul Holiday" "O'Holy Night," "Peace on Earth for Everyone," "Dance, Chitlins, Dance" "Why Don't You Believe," and "Merry Christmas To the World."

  3. These guys are not bad, but innovative or experimental they are not. Just because there are quirky keyboards and electronic beats mixed with rock n roll elements doesn't mean its experimental. Pink Floyd was experimental. The Flaming Lips are experimental. Mute Math is pop rock. There are definitely some interesting elements in the music, like the vocal melodies (a little Stingish), but this is not worth the incredible praise it has received. I wouldn't buy it. I'd buy a few songs.

  4. I owned this cd until one of my friends stole it from me, but I LOVE IT. It is deff worth buying, I'm actually going to a mutemath concert this month and I am extremely excited. Mutemath sounds so different from any other band that I have heard and I love it.

  5. Mutemath performed on the 2006 Warped Tour. This is an EP that is just as great as their newer full-length. Everyone comments on the vocals sounding like STing (when he was good in the POlice !!) but they forget to say that the atmospherics on the album are beyond anyone else's music. There are numerous guitars and synths that aren't heard on the first listen. Played at loudest volume, the dynamics change even more. I heard them on Less Than Jake's tour bus for the first time and was instantly hooked. You will not be disappointed. And see them live !!! (They also have a positive message and it isn't shoved down your throat like bad medicine, but rather soothing like a nice Hallz cough drop.)
