  1. This is the best Gospel music CD I have ever heard. Great songs and wonderfull voices to make wish there were more to listen when it is all over.

  2. The Statler Brother's Gospel Favorites is one of my husband's favorite cd's. If you like good old songs gospel music this is the cd for you.

  3. For someone who's musical tastes range from the neo-Cajun Pine Leaf Boys to hard rockers like Def Leppard and Motley Crue to edge-of-Country bands like The Mavericks and the Desert Rose Band, you'd probably think that a review of a Statler Brothers' album would seem out of place. However, I must admit that I have a very soft spot in my heart for these guys. Growing up in southwest Louisiana, my dad ruled the radio and was the primary music buyer in the family. I was treated to acts like Merle Haggard, Jimmy Swaggart, Fats Domino, and Marty Robbins. I also got a healthy dose of the Statlers who, other than Merle, were probably my dad's favorite artists. My first concert was a Statler Brothers show and I would eventually see them again in Dollywood a few years later. Their sound has stuck with me forever.

This particular album shows the Statlers at their finest: singing Gospel music. I'm not talking about modern Gospel sounds. Nope, I'm talking about Southern Gospel, complete with four-part harmony, string pickin' and plenty of "oomph" to get you on your feet. Contemporary Christian artists can't hold a candle to traditional Southern Gospel sounds. From the wonderful "Just A Little Talk With Jesus" to the upbeat gem that is "I'll Fly Away," this album is wonderful. My personal favorite tunes include "Precious Memories" and "Turn Your Radio On."

Yes, a kid who grew up with Guns N' Roses, Whitesnake, and Metallica does know what good music is. You may not fancy my other tastes in music, but give the Statler Brothers a try. You might be surprised at how much you will really enjoy them.

    Highly recommended.

  4. This CD is a treasure for any Christian and Statler's fan. It will keep you humming all day.

  5. Yes! This CD is a winner!! Cannot beat the harmony of the Statler Brothers and there were plenty of selections for wonderful listening. Buy it!!

  1. great old hyms sung like an angel. amy grant at her best.

  2. I have been a fan of Amy's for quite some time now. i was very pleased to see that she made the leap back to here roots in this CD, however, i was disappointed when Amy decided to break songs up. "It is Well" would have been more beautiful on it's own. Amy also did this with some other selections which didn't seem to do justice to some of these very old hymns.

Amy in my opinion did it right on the second CD of old and favorite hymns letting each song stand on its own. It was far more pleasing to listen to the second CD.

  3. As Amy Grant fan, I pretty much love everything she does. However, this album did a good job of bringing new life to some old favorite hymns. While I enjoy listening to this at home, I find that I will often use it for background music at church (gathering, communion or after the service). It is a great album for pastors to have in their collections as well as Amy Grant fans.

  4. This is a wonderful collection of old time Christian songs of faith from Amy Grant. Magnificently produced by husband Vince Gill, it is at once artistically beautiful yet simply presented so that the words of faith are not overpowered by the productions. Grant made this album to commemorate her roots in Christian music and has lovingly rendered all those songs she sang as a child in church with her grandmother in a manner that would make her proud. It is gentle and soulful and the selections are perfect.

    1) "This is My Father's World"-This song has a ferris wheel kind of rhythm that ponders on the happiness of living in God's world in all its beauty.

    2) "My Jesus, I Love Thee"-There is a Scottish Highland kind of feeling to this selection as Amy sings of love for Jesus.

    3) "Softly and Tenderly"-Amy perfectly captures this haunting call for the weary to "come home" to God.

    4) "I Need Thee Every Hour/Nothing But the Blood"-The heartfelt "I Need Thee Every Hour" blends effortlessly into the rollicking tent revival duet of Amy and Vince on "Nothing but the Blood" that will have you feeling as though you should be up on your feet and clapping your hands together.

    5) "What You Already Own"-I am not sure if it was intentional or coincidence, but I could not help thinking of how Amy was abandoned by some in the Christian community for not being perfect. This gentle lament of sometimes being unfaithful and doing wrong and looking to God for strength shows his spirit remains with those with faith, which is played out by our lives.

    6) "It is Well With My Soul/The River's Gonna Keep on Rolling"-This beautful blending of songs has a flow like a river itself as Amy sings of God's love being like a river that keeps forgiving and makes us realize it is not possesions that are our legacy, but ourselves.

    7) "Do You Remember the Time"-This song is a longing for the innocence we all once had and an encouragement to hold on to how we once felt, when we were kids, and heaven seemed real.

    8) "Fields of Plenty/Be Still My Soul"-A melancholy guitar solo turns into a haunting admonition to leave things in God's hands, culminating with a voice over by Amy that is heartrending.

    9) "Imagine/Sing the Wondrous Love of Jesus"-Amy's imagining what it will be like to see and be in His Glory ends in the brief ode to her love of Jesus.

    10) "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing"-This great church hymn with it's terrific background vocals and country flavor makes you feel like you driving by an old country church during a different era.

    11) "Fairest Lord Jesus"-This is a guitar driven song of uplifting praise, and once again, makes you think of being in church.

    12) "Holy, Holy, Holy"-This is a beautiful song of love for God that is like looking out over a glorious vista of His creation.

    13) "What a Friend We Have in Jesus/Old Rugged Cross/How Great Thou Art"-Traditional church songs are beautifully melded together and offer a nostalgic longing for the faith of simpler times.

    14) "Marching to Zion"-The ending of a church service and that Scottish Highland feel return as Amy ends this wonderful album with an uplifting church hymn, choir and all.

This is a truly wonderful collection of songs born of faith that has a special feeling of old churches in the country and gatherings in small towns to sing praises. It is a very special CD that crosses boundaries and can be enjoyed by anyone who loves music.

It is a reminder to those of us who are jaded and world weary, who have stood next to the darkness and in it, who have seen a little too much, that good still does exist, as does hope.

5 comments about All About Love.

  1. This album has to be the weakest album of all of SCC's current work. Granted it takes up the theme of love , mainly to his wife but I feel this was a very self indulgent effort and one that should have remained a private one. The songs just don't cut it and the bottom line is after hitting his stride this album really threw many SCC fans for a loop and one that I think many haven't gotten over when you look at the sales of the last 2 albums , which are stellar by the way. It has a few excellent cuts but that is all I can say . I have it to make my collection complete but I think I have played a handful of times which is an oddity for me when its comes to SCC recordings.

  2. I like some of SCC songs but this is by far his best album. It contains a lot of love songs that he sings to and about his wife. It just is a great love album for all of those not interested in the worlds point of view of love but a Godly point of view. I would recommend this to all of those in love or married who just need a great love album. Standout songs are "When Love Takes you In" "Youve Got ME" the cover song "Im gonna be (500 miles)" and "I will Be Here"

  3. This CD is amazing. Nearly every song is a "WOW!" I believe it is one of his best CD's, that has come from his heart. BUY IT!!!

  4. Due to the title, "All About Love" and after reading several reviews, I expected this CD to be very mellow and somewhat sappy. When I first played it, I was in a mellow mood and wanted to relax. However, the CD is not what I expected. It is classic SCC, with catchy rhythms and as always, with amazing lyrics. His remake of the Proclaimer's "I'm gonna be (500 miles)" is just as good, if not better, than the original. "We belong together (Tarzan and Jane)" is another upbeat number. The song, "11-6-64" is a touching number about the day his wife was born. Steven has added two songs from previous CD's, "I will be here" and "When love takes you in" which adds themselves nicely to this wonderful CD containing 16 songs. If you are a SCC fan, you definitely need to purchase this CD. At the same time I bought "All About Love," I also purchased Steven's CD entitled "Declaration." In my opinion, "Declaration" is one of the best CD's SCC has ever recorded. So, do yourself a favor - purchase both...You'll be glad you did.

  5. OK, folks....I'm an SCC fan from a ways back and I don't understand why this album wouldn't deserve anything but 5 stars. "500 Miles" I could do without and I always skip over it, but that's the ONLY low point on this CD. This one never gets old. The thinking behind "11-6-64" is so smart and FLATTERING to his wife. Wouldn't all women love for a man to write about how our husband's life changed the day we were born? The fact that he's acknowledging God's purpose for marital love is refreshing. And the hauntingly beautiful "When Love Takes You In" (yes, I know it's a re-release) makes the entire CD worthwhile. My sister adopted a little boy from Russia and I plan on framing the lyrics for her for Christmas. Buy this CD, you won't be disappointed.

  1. If you are a fan of the gentle, gliding voice of Leigh Nash, you will enjoy the selection of Blue on Blue. Leigh has a way of infusing each song with melody beyond the music. When I play the record I find my mood elevating as I am lead by her sweet vocals into the careful lyrics. Some of the songs are pop-y, but I don't mind that because she is such a pleasure to have in the atmosphere. Each song is like a little joyous morsel that I look forward to unwrapping as the previous song ends.
As a fan of Sixpence and her Delerium track, I am happy to have found Blue on Blue. It's definitly worth the buy.

  2. I have to agree with another reviewer. For fans of Sixpense this album will get you part of the way there but not all the way. What is lacking is the essential harmony and sweet discordance that was created between Matt Slocum's guitar and Leigh's voice. I'm not pulling any punches here and being brutally honest the songs lack depth. Matt Slocum is just a better song writer and his absense here is very evident. I bought this Album because I heard and fell in love with the song "Charmed Life". One of Leigh's few solo efforts after Sixpense None The Richer. For those that are seeking that vibe - this is not the album that will give it to you.

  3. I loved this album. Although, to be fair, this definitely is not a bubble gum pop album that telegraphs within 15 seconds if you are going to like a given song or not. You really need to pay attention to what is going on and it might take two or three listens to really discover how accomplished, complex and graceful the overall album is. People who like poetry and savor listening to great lyrics will find "Blue on Blue" to be a treat during a long commute or maybe quiet afternoon where you just want to relax and contemplate things.

Leigh Nash has a particularly memorable voice that is supple and sweet without sounding too polished. And in this album, her sound is beautifully showcased with a low-key rock sound and, as I already said, some great songwriting. In fact, every time I listen to the album I'm more and more impressed with that aspect. Every song has something intriguing going on musically and the lyrics are universally intelligent, and emotionally wise. There really isn't a bad track on the whole album.

As a side note, I recommend you also check out Nash's work as a guest vocalist with Delerium. Other reviews mention that Nash was mostly known for being the lead singer for Sixpence None the Richer. But she's lent her voice to the rock-electronica band Delerium and that partnership produced some great songs. The sound is more up-tempo, but check out "Innocente" (from "Poem") and "Run for it" (from "Chimera").

  4. Leigh Nash released this, her first soloalbum, 4 years after the break-up of her band Sixpence None the Richer. Though some may feel that the album lacks a bit of the edge that can be heard on Sixpence None the Richer's albums, fans of the ballads of that band are bound to love this album too. Nash co-wrote all songs on the album, which is full of fine songwriting.

One of the very best songs "Nervous In The Light Of Dawn " was written with Sixpence None the Richer partner Matt Slocum, and it was really great news that the band in early 2008 announced their reformation.

Leigh Nash has a very beautiful voice and with so much great material it should not go wrong - and it doesn't. Most tracks are really not that different from SNTR, but the guitars are generally more in the background on this album. A nice exception to this is the rocking "Blue".

Other stand-outs are the opener "Along the Wall" - a nice ballad dominated by piano and nice vocals.

Another exquisite ballad is "Never Finsh" with its gorgeous chorus. The same could be said about the moving closing track "Just a Little".

Among the bonus-tracks there is another Matt Slocum collaboration - the upbeat "Run Together".

Vocally Nash often touches upon the same sentiments as another great songwriter Suzanne Vega; though her approach is obviously more "pop". A fine album.

  5. This CD is great. It's really rare to find a CD where every track is something interesting and melodic, but this did not disappoint.
The second cut, "nervous in the light of dawn" will stick to your brain for days, begging you to play it. And you will oblige because it's such a beautiful song. Leigh's voice is lovely and soothing, if not slightly haunting. In a good way.
Great CD. Buy it! It will become an indie favorite.

  1. Awesome DVD. The live worship was awesome and a blessing! The 2nd DVD has great teaching resources on worship and playing the songs with guitar and other instruments.

    Highly recommended!

  2. The Hillsong team leads an arena full of people into musical worship for 18 songs. The musicians and the audience seem to be completely focused on God, unaware of the many cameras that are capturing everything. Just a powerful and moving display of praise.

The drum workshop on the bonus DVD is excellent, teaching drummers to play 3 of the 18 songs. It's pretty detailed, explaining the feel of the song before demonstrating each part of the song. There's also a guitar workshop and two documentary features on the bonus DVD.

  3. This DVD is very highly recommended. I have had this DVD for about 2 months and it is always a blessing whenever I play it.

  4. Hillsong church has God's anointing on their song writers. The music is great, the lyrics are reflective of hearts. Relevant worship that will lift your spirit to enter His presence.

  5. Although not a fan of the swirling cameras and jump cuts in the DVD, the music is excellent. As a guitar player in a praise band, I found the guitar workshops very helpful. They show you how to play a few songs (3) and share what effects they use to get their sound. If you play in a praise band and want to get your tone closer to Hillsong, this DVD will definitely help (with a little practice of course!)

  1. I'm certainly not a BDW fan - but very disappointed at the Rich Mullins remake. Seldom does one improve on the original (as was the case here) so what is the point? Write your own songs and leave others alone.

  2. I really love this band. I was excited to get it. It stayed in my cd player for 2 weeks before I finally stopped listening to it in the car.

  3. I was lucky enough to see these guys in concert and couldn't WAIT to get the CD. It's really uplifting and I have about worn it out. I never get tired of listening to it.

  4. I heard big daddy for the first time in 2001! I was blessed by them and so were the entire crew that was with us. Their lyrics are honest and they are really good musicians to boot! On this albumn, the Rich Mullins song "Hold Me Jesus" is my favorite!

  5. I have been a big fan of Big Daddy Weave for a long time, so when I saw their new album, "Every Time I Breathe" at Wal-Mart, I had to buy it. I listened to it and decided that it was one of the best cds I had found in a long time. I have listened to the song "Every Time I Breathe" over and over again and it still moves me every time i listen to it. The other 10 songs are nothing short of excellent as well. A great cd that is a little more mellow than their previous releases but still upbeat with uplifting lyrics. This cd is a definite keeper!

5 comments about Rock of Ages...Hymns & Faith.

  1. This is an album of Christian music, primarily but not entirely focused on older hymns. The music is fairly mainstream country-rock. Grant's voice is very beautiful. All of the songs are very good. For me, the stand-outs are "Joyful, Joyful" a Christian hymn set to Beethoven's secular-pagan-messianic classic "Ode to Joy" from the 9th Symphony and "El Shaddai," an extremely simple and moving hymn to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

  2. You know, I have to give the Glory to GOD in Jesus' name for HIS servant Amy - - I have been healed and inspired for twenty years because of her willingness to share the gifts and talents GOD gave her to impart HIS unconditional, unfailing, and never-ending love for each and every one of us. Her albums have kept me from losing faith altogether..many, many times. I praise GOD in Jesus' name for the beautiful music, flowing right through me....and for the knowledge that "anywhere with Jesus, I am not alone, anywhere with Jesus, I can safely go. Sweet WILL of GOD..Let me say once more..that I love YOU.

  3. This album touchs all the spiritial feelings of ones soul. As I listen to this album, I can almost feel each song shift my emotions into a different gear. This is a great album to melt away the stresses of the day, while at the same time bringing an inner peace at the promise of tomorrow, by way of ones redemption in our renewal of faith. It is a beautifully produced album, and I am glad I have it in my collection. Re: the comments by "Christian Mom" It sounded kind of familiar. Almost like what a blacksmith would say when she would have an ax or two, too grind.

  4. What a wonderful album. Simple inspirational songs by a great singer. The execution is very professional...a hallmark of Vince Gill albums.

This album gives Ms. Grant another chance to showcase her beautiful voice w/songs on traditional church hymns. We all know that she's great at singing pop...but some of us don't like pop that much! I've grown up w/many of these songs in church, it's so happy to hear Ms. Grant sing them. Thank you, Amy & Vince.

  5. How can anyone say this is a terrible cd? It's great. I love it. I am an Amy fan and have been for quite some time and I think they are all great and this latest one is one of the best.

1 comments about Saints' Paradise: Trombone Shout Bands.

  1. The Amazon editorial description of this album is right on. A few years back, steel guitar gospel was a cross-over hit. Now it is time for trombone gospel bands. The sound is related to the New Orleans brass bands - but is truly unique. The notes provided with the CD give a good introduction both to the United House of Prayer and to the six shout bands included in the anthology. My personal favorite is One Day at a Time and Ease My Troubled Mind although Madison's Lively Stones are delightful if you want a higher energy music.

  1. Ordered for my mom. She said it was OK, but he's not as good as the last guy who played for the Gaithers.

  2. This is a very inspirational gospel album. The songs are all different and Gordon gives you a little of everything from traditional southern gospel to almost a ragtime sound. If you like music that makes your heart sing then this is the album to buy. It stays in my CD player even when everything else gets shuffled around. I love this album and the way it makes me feel. The title track alone is worth buying this album. You will feel different after you have listened to this CD.

  3. Gordon Mote has a great voice. I found this CD to be very inspirational.
