5 comments about Sings 22 Favorite Hymns.

  1. These are the traditional hymns I grew up with and Mr. Ford sings them beautifully. Listening to them gives me time to pause in my life for private worship and praise to God through song.

  2. Some of the best old sacred songs in the beautiful voice of Tennessee Ernie Ford!

  3. My mother was dying in a hospice. We needed some music to play for her while she was there. Two of her favorite hymns were on the one cd. It was hard to find that. Amazon came through with the selection, and overnited it to me. My mother passed 2 days later. I'll always be grateful for that cd.

  4. Tennessee Ernie Ford was a very popular singer when I was a child and my parents and siblings loved to watch his TV show. He would always end the show with a hymn and I wanted to revisit those songs and the happy days of my youth. The Hymns and Ernie are as good as ever.

  5. I bought this CD specifically for the song "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" which is hard to find on a CD. This hymn was written in 1830 by Ray Palmer (lyrics) and put to music later by Lowell Mason, a man Palmer met on the streets of Boston. Mason took home the lyric, wrote a melody, and a few days later found Palmer and told him no matter what Palmer did for the rest of his life, he would be remembered for the hymn.

Another gem here is "Just As I Am Without One Plea." This is the amazing story of Charlotte Elliot. This bedridden, sick woman was feeling sorry she could not help her pastor with his fundraising for charity as she was simply too sick. After writing this hymn in 1835, she was shocked to find copies of it being sold by the thousands. The proceeds were given to the very charity Charlotte thought she could not help. After she died in 1871, others found stacks of letters sent to her from all over the world, thanking her for changing their lives and bringing them to Christ.

These are not the only two historical hymns in collection.

This is not just a CD of the great hymns of our time. This CD is a living history of hymns going far back in time.

    It is a treasure.

I am thankful I got a chance to see Tennessee Ernie Ford when he appeared on TV during his glory years.

  1. I heard these guys on Austin City Limits and couldnt get there funk out of my head. I love this cd. I will be sure to purchase more and more...

  2. "Unclassified" is a humble name for an album I'd call amazing. Robert Randolph's guitar would have gotten me up on Sunday AM for church, for sure.

"Soul Refreshing" was the first cut I'd heard on an alternative station here in Knoxville. Took a bit to get the DJ to answer, seems I was the 4th or 5th person to call the station and ask who the group was.

The whole CD's solid, rocked out funk. The feeling is positive and uplifting. "Unclassified" would be a good CD to put on for a rainy day.

I also noticed that I had Robert Randolph in two other collections: "Power of Soul" a tribute to Jimi Hendrix doing "Purple Haze" and Santana's "All That I Am" playing on "Trinity."

  3. I've never heard anyone that sounds quite like them. It's a great mix of high-energy music! It's impossible not to smile and listen to them at the same time.

  4. The CD was not what I expected. There were only two songs that I liked. If you like popsy, jamband kinda music, you might like this CD.

  5. I know by reading the other reviews of Robert Randolf & The Family Band's
CD-"Unclassified", that their are as many opinions attached to it and his
other CD's and any Grateful Dead release, and it all boils down to
what makes ones ears happy, thats all. This CD makes my ears happy, my
toe's tap, and my bootie do gyrations I didn't know it had in it.
This is a JOYUS, RIGHTOUS, FROM THE GUT TO THE MIND kind of music. To
answer a question that pops up in other reviews, "his simple songs", to
me itseems he is singing praise to his supreme being. The music that
backs the lyrics, and the music is also his expression of praise, not all
gospel is gospel. But what ever you believe in has to be moved by Robert
Randolph & The Family Band. But other than that, this CD and other of
theirs is a vary strange balance of reach out and grab you by the guts,
and an aquired taste. Brave new concept, great music, praise your deity
that their are bands out their that cannot and probably never be pigeon
holed. That is a rare commodity in this world of stamped out soon to
elevator/shoping music world. I would advise to to at least listen if not
buy this CD, it may open your mind to something different.

5 comments about WOW Worship: Yellow.

  1. I recently purchased the WOW Worship, Yellow. The CD is a great worship CD, with lots of familiar songs. I would definitely recommend this CD to everyone. The reasons for only four stars are that there are a couple of arrangements that I didn't particularly care for and two of those seem to just keep on going. You might like those, though. Great CD.

  2. Bought this for one song - In Christ Alone - but they are all great! Would recommend this CD!

  3. I love these two cds and believe anyone of any age would enjoy them. They are terrific contemporary worship songs that point our minds to God. My favorite songs are "All in all" by nichole nordeman, "In Christ alone" by geoff moore and Adreinne Liesching, and "Your Love, O Lord" by Third day. There were a couple songs I didn't really care for like Out of Eden's version of "Every Move I Make", "Let Everything That Has Breath" performed by Matt Redman (I like the original version done by Cademan's Call on the City on a Hill cd much better.), and "The Happy Song" by by Delirious. They are not horrible songs though. All the songs sounded up to date, no 80's sounding stuff. If you are looking for great pop worship songs that aren't too loud but not too quiet and boring either, then this is the cd for you.

  4. I love every song on this CD. The songs are uplifting and familiar. This is one CD you can play over and over again.

  5. What makes these compilations so great is that the songs ARE NOT always performed by the original artist or songwriter. The reason this is so special is because you get to hear other artists take on a song that makes it almost it's own new song. An example of this would be ZOE Girl's version of "Jesus, Lover Of My Soul" from WOW Red. The song by itself is great, but then ZOE Girl's version adds tons of power and depth. Another great thing about the WOW series is that when the original artist does perform, they may do a modified version of the song that you cannot get anywhere else. An example of this is "Draw Me Close " from the Katinas on WOW Yellow or Chris Tomlin & Steven Curtis Chapman doing " We Fall Down" from WOW Red. I love hearing different artists sing the same praise songs because they bring a different flavor and vibe to the song. The WOW series are worth every penny and THE BEST praise & worship music around!

5 comments about My Mother's Hymn Book.

  1. I am not normally a huge fan of hymns. I love contemporary Christian music, but also enjoy the occasional hymn.

This particular collection is great. The selected songs are mostly classics in this genre. They are sung by an American cultural icon who had a significant spiritual journey himself. They were recorded close to the end of his life. These also have a common theme: Looking forward to eternal life after leaving this one. He had indicated that this was his favorite of the numerous albums that he recorded.

These songs came from Johnny's mother's cherished hymn book. He had grown up hearing her play these often. For anyone who grew up listening to and singing hymns, many of these will likely be quite familiar.

Although Cash's voice on these songs is weaker than it had once been, one can easily tell that he had his whole heart into the message here.

I would certainly recommend this album. Another great hymn collection that I would strongly endorse is Jars of Clay - Redemption Songs.

  2. Johnny Cash has released many Gospel albums and compilations during his half century career. MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK is easily his best album of Gospel tunes that is still in print and still readily available on CD, recorded and released all at once, (not part of any compilation album).

MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK by Johnny Cash is a great album to listen to, whether you like Johnny Cash, or Gospel music, or both. The quiet, voice and acoustic guitar only sparseness seems very personal and expressive. Cash loved doing Gospel music, and you can tell that his heart and soul is in this album of beloved church songs which he learned as a child, literally learning them out of the library of songs in his mother's well worn book of hymns.

MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK is calm and quiet listening that is great for calm and quiet Sunday afternoons and contemplation. The musical performances are good to great, and so is the lyrical content.

The b/w CD booklet has personal comments written by Johnny Cash for every song on this album, so that is very interesting.

At the AMERICAN record label, they often had Johnny Cash record tons of music very cheaply and economically, by just recording him singing and strumming his guitar, without any added instruments nor other musicians. MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK is the best and most consistent of the albums recorded and released this way. His last album of newly recorded music, 100 HIGHWAYS is pretty much entirely in the same performance format, but is not mostly Gospel in content, though it is very interesting as his last recordings. American V: A Hundred Highways

GOSPEL GLORY by Johnny Cash is my single favorite Gospel compilation by Johnny Cash, because of the high percentage of famous Christian standards that sound very contemporary in their recording style. Gospel Glory

But GOSPEL GLORY can be topped by the Johnny Cash Gospel compilation CD called JUST AS I AM, which contains all but one of the recordings on GOSPEL GLORY, and then also doubles the song count with other Gospel songs from his career. Just as I Am

CASH: ULTIMATE GOSPEL is a recent 2007 remastering and round up of many rare and out of print Gospel tunes by Johnny! It is almost as good as JUST AS I AM. The fresh remastering of a 2007 re-release makes many of the oldest recordings sound fresh again, and much more enjoyable than the same recordings which appeared on earlier CDs released in the 1990's and earlier. A great CD! Cash: Ultimate Gospel

PERSONAL FILE is a two CD pack of which disc 2 is entirely Gospel tunes, almost as good as MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK. It is a compilation of "lost" rehearsal tapes of Johnny just singing and strumming his guitar, just like on MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK. The singing is stronger and the guitar playing is a bit more lively, but the songs are not quite as strong as the selections of MY MOTHER'S HYMN BOOK. Personal File

And don't forget to check out Johnny Cash's reading of the entire NEW TESTAMENT on CD, which is very fun for any Johnny Cash listeners and/or Bible lovers! The last CD in the set is just Johnny Cash reading the Book of Revelation in its entirety, as if it is a CD album all by itself! Cool stuff and very inspirational! Johnny Cash Reads the Complete New Testament: Collector's Edition

  3. Thanks was the one I was looking for.

  4. Finally, Johnny Cash finds what he was meant to be. Just his guitar playing, his voice, and a great selection of songs make this a must have. Johnny was a legend and this is his album, what he wanted to do all of his life. Buy this it is wonderful.

  5. The 15 songs selected by Johnny not that long before his death all came literally from his mom's favorite hymnal. That is the weakness of the effort, to me, because of a certain lack of variety in content. I agree also with an earlier reviewer who noted that Johnny's guitar work was too subdued here. (Perhaps in his illness, his pickin' suffered more than his vocalizing. While not as strong a voice as he showed on his 1993 American Recordings debut, it really is better than I expected.) Johnny does have some uptempo selections here, and they are the best on the disc. However, in his "Personal File" double-CD set recently released on Sony/Legacy, you get a whole disc of acoustic hymns and spirituals sung in Johnny's 1970's voice. That CD, overall, is much more compelling than this one. True fans will demand to own both, of course. In the "Personal File" effort, you also get a disc of Johnny singing traditional country songs, along with some self-penned tracks and a few 1970's era songs by other artists like Johnny Horton, John Prine and Carlene Carter. The cost of the two CD's of "Personal File" is just a tiny bit more than what you'll pay for "My Mother's Hymn Book" so I highly recommend making that purchase first. His religious disc from "Personal File" has hardly been out of my car CD player since I got it five or six weeks ago, and yet I am not a very religious person. They just grab you. So does "My Mother's Hymn Book" but not as powerfully.

  1. This CD is nothing short of simply freakin amazing! I love it and I'm happy I bought. Tracks like Joyful Noise and Hold On are crazy, but every track on the cd is good. Worth the money!

  2. The best preachers making music today are in rap or hip hop, and among them, FLAME is top-notch. Biblical quotes and allusions saturate his lyrics, and he also references some of today's best theologians. Above all, FLAME's music pulses with a passion for the Gospel.

I insistently recommend this CD to any who love hip hop, or those who might be willing to expand their musical tastes to behold the power of its lyrics, as I did.

  3. I had bought his first one"Our World Fallen" and he truly brought a message everyone needed to hear but when I saw that he was going to do another one to this,I got excited and had to listen to this.I have to say this is the best Christian Rap cd I have heard since Cross Movement did their last album.Flame made me just sit there with my mouth open with awesome Lyrics, fantastic beats and a message that the world could use right now.If you have never heard of Flame, you had to have been hiding under a rock, you must get this,no matter what the price is!He will bless your soul!

  4. This cd is Flame's best yet and easily one of CMR's Top 5 of all time. From start to finish it's fire with huge standouts being: Hold On, Go Buck, See More Him, I Been Redeemed, It's All Gone Pass, and the best song of 2008...JOYFUL NOISE! This song alone warrants you purchasing the entire album. Did I mention that the lyrics were fire and doctrinally sound as usual? Praise God for how HE's using Flame to minister. This cd is hot!

  5. Look I'm new to this christian hip hop world by on the realz "Wow!"
Flames set the standard pretty up high on this one. For my first Christian Hip hop ablum this is tight work! It's been nearly a month and it's all I play!

  1. This album is my absolute favorite, for several reasons. First, Every song speaks directly to my own heart in every sitution. This music really gets in your soul. Second, It's completly clean, and encouraging. It's not too often hese days you find music that is safe and good for your heart. Lastly, the music is solid gold!! Edgy, passionate, and full of Jesus! I totally rcomend this CD to anyone who loves music. Oh! and it's way better than their other records!

  2. this is a great Christian rock band, if you listen to Lifehouse or bands similar to them, then you will love Barlow Girl.

  3. Casual fans of Barlow Girl may be familiar with their powerful and loving ballads such as "Enough" and "I Need You To Love Me," but purchasing this album will let you in on a big secret: These ladies know how to rock. With the opening cut, "Grey," new fans will realize that the solid lyric and music stylings of the Girls' CCM light hits transitions perfectly into their rock songs. This carries on into songs like "Let Go" and and even pop rockers like "5 Minutes Of Fame."

If you like Christian bands like Superchic(k) or music along the lines of Kelly Clarkson's album "Breakaway" (but more moving and definitely more rockin'), check out Barlow Girl's "Another Journal Entry). They have a couple of other albums out as well, and they are also worth a look.

    Highly recommended.

  4. I absolutely LOVE this album. These songs are contemporary and fun to listen to but the lyrics are still meaningful. There is a great mix of rock and more traditional folk-ish songs, great harmony, and even a little rap stuck in - there is something for everyone on this album. The more I listen to this album, the more I love it! I listen to it EVERY day!!! I highly recommend this album to any christian looking for modern music with strong faith-based lyrics.

  5. Another Journal Entry is another quality CD by BarlowGirl. It combines good rock and roll with solid, positive lyrics. The lead singer has a very beautiful voice.

There are several very good songs on here. Some of my favorites are as follows: Grey, Let Go, I Need You To Love Me, and Never Alone.

This group combines some very good attributes: positive, inspirational lyrics that parents will appreciate with energetic rock that will appeal to teenagers. Actually, their appeal is far broader than just teens. This is good stuff for anyone.

If you are looking for something to buy for a teenage girl especially, I highly recommend BarlowGirl.

  1. I recently have fallen in love with Sarah Groves music. I don't know how I missed knowing about her. I got a different cd as a gift and then went "youtubing" to listen to other of her stuff. Painting Pictures of Egypt is why I bought this cd, but I love all the songs on it. She is refreshing, and devoted in her lyrics, as well as real with the struggles we have and the answer God is.

I highly recommend her for a fresh style of worship and Christian ballad music.

  2. This is an incredible CD. I saw Sara live, she is a very talented singer, musician and songwriter. I listen to this CD when I need to get focused on what is most important, my relationship with Jesus Christ. Some songs are like prayers, and others really cause me to reflect on my own life and what I could be doing better to truly walk with Him. The music is melodic and thoughtful to upbeat and fun, I truly enjoy this CD.

  3. It is amazing how one CD can contain so many songs that would respond to so many different "seasons" of life...
It is hard for me chose my favorite song because it changes as the story of my life changes..
**** 4 years ago, I had just gone through many changes, now home, new state...
my "anthem" at that time was "Pictures of Egypt"....
*** a while later, while I was in the midst of yet more decisions, my "anthem" was "The Word" .... "While I attemt to help myself, my Bible sits up on the shelf".... wow, did that ever get my attention... "hey Silly, find the answers in the Bible"
*** when things still did not get better for me after a few more months I "moved on" to "Hello God"..... begging the Lord to be clearer.. He, in His great wisdom, telling me to just wait" ...
*** I have since come a long way, by the Grace of Father.. and my new Anthem these days is "Audience of One" !!
Though I know that this is a plateau and that life will continue to throw me curves, Father is there for me.. no matter what...
Thank you Sara for being so transparent!!

  4. Sara Groves musical style is varied and interesting. Her lyrics are deep, emotional, convicting, and intelligent.

  5. This has to be one of the best albums ever released. It has everything from great lyrics, great vocals, and great music. Sara groves has such a wonderful voice that is powerful when singing this type of contemporay music. It has a nice blend of uptempo and slower songs that all seem to flow together. The songs are very inspirational and Christ cenetered. A must have album for everyone. Lots of Standout songs such as "Conversations" "WOrd" "Painting Pictures of Egypt" "How It IS Between Us" and "Know MY Heart"

5 comments about Gospels, Spirituals & Hymns.

  1. Purchase of this set was for musical experience rather than the religious message. Therefore Disc 2 is the highlight and Disc 1 more for those after religious inspiration.

  2. This is a great collection of songs and the arrangements are so great. Didn't it Rain is one of my favorites since I was a kid and no one can sing it like Mahalia! Love the piano on this album too!

  3. I do not regret the purchase of Gospels, Spirituals, and Hymns. Sometimes we need to hear frm those whose shoulders we stand on. We need to hear the word of the Lord from one who preaches through song, someone like Sister Mahalia Jackson. I highly recomend this set for your music library.

  4. Well, if you are into Gospel (or just into great singing, for that matter), you need look no further; simply put, I don't see how you could do without this collection. Provides a great selection from Jackson's repertoire, and rare gems.

  5. The music is great and the singer is phenomenal. All in all a great purchase.

4 comments about Country's 20 Classic Gospel: Songs of the Century.

  1. I bought this product for a Christmas gift.My friend was thrilled over the CD because it had good ole'favorite songs. I would recommend this CD to anyone that enjoys Southern Gospel Music.

  2. This was one of the best buys I done lately. The artists and songs were the perfect match to songs (especially Amazing Grace by the Statlers)

  3. This was a gift for my father and he loved it. We listened to it all morning Christmas Day. The songs are beautifully chosen and wonderfully familiar. A good mix.

  4. How often have you heard someone say how much they hate country, except for Johnny Cash or "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

Here's a compilation that person should enjoy.

Featuring old tracks from Cash, Elvis, Hank Williams, Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and more, this cd breathes of the authenticity of yesterday.

As a compilation, not every track is outstanding, however I enjoyed most of them, skipping only a few. The standout track is "Farther Along" by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton.
