3 comments about Shelley Duvall's Tall Tales & Legends - Pecos Bill.

  1. THIS VIDEO HAS BECOME A FAMILY FAVORITE FROM MY 2-YEAR-OLD BROTHER TO MY PARENTS. I LIKE THIS VIDEO A LOT BECAUSE IT IS FULL OF LAUGHS, AND VERY COLORFUL,WESTERN SCENERY. THIS IS A VIDEO THAT WE CAN ALL WATCH TOGETHER. WE ARE A FAN OF DUVALL'S TALL TALES AND LEGENDS, BUT WE MUST ADMIT THAT THIS ONE IS PROBABLY OUR FAVORITE. IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE, THIS IS THE ONE TO START WITH. IT'S GUARANTEED TO LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN LAUGHING.

  2. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, this is the best of the Tall Tales and Legends series. It hits just the right balance between storytelling and humor, and parents will find it just as entertaining as the kids. More than any of the others, this episode captures the flavor and magic of what tall tales are all about. It manages to maintain a sense of wonder that will spark the imaginations of the viewers. Steve Gutenberg has the role of his career as Pecos Bill. He is perfectly matched by Rebecca De Mornay as Sluefoot Sue. Director Howard Storm keeps things light and colorful (much as he did with the equally wonderful Faerie Tale Theatre version of "Three Little Pigs"). It's non-stop entertaining and I can't recommend this episode enough. Thank you Shelley Duvall! Quality children's entertainment doesn't come any better than this!

  3. Probably one of the best Tall Tales available. Our whole family loves this one. Everyone in it is hysterical! The first part of this video also gives a good overview of what a tall tale is about.

2 comments about The Favorite Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley.

  1. This movie would be interesting to you only if you were a 6-year-old. Mary-Kate and Ashley are about 9 here. I can't stand listening to their songs. At least they only did some songs when they were little. I am glad that they aren't singers like Hilary Duff because she can sing sooo much better. This has such poor acting, even though Mary-Kate and Ashley are usually good actresses. (You can tell that is staged.) The miners who are searching for marshmallows are just plain ridiculous. The act like preschoolers who don't even know what real snow is. Gosh, I can't believe they put together this movie when they were 15. They did this babyish stuff about 6 years ago when they released this. All I can say is please!!!, please spare us. This is so babyish. It even has Mary-Kate narrating! It's sooo boring. It has no realism at all. Who's parents would let them go off to the Gulf of Mexico alone? I don't think anyone. Some of Mary-Kate and Ashley's stuff is cool, but this was really a waste of time. I think that by the time they were 15 most had forgotten about them as the "Trenchcoat Twins." They are probably even embarrassed about how they used to play the Trenchcoat Twins. It's so boring how they put songs in short movies like this to pass time. This was a waste of effort on Mary-Kate and Ashley's part. They could have spent more time making something more productive. They probably got bored so they released this movie. I am glad that I rented this movie from the library. It's not even worth $2.00 to rent it from a video rental. Definitely not recommended unless you are 6 or under. If you are 6 or under, then you will probably have fun dancing and singing to the songs and stuff like that, but it definitely won't entertain you if you are 10 and over. This would be educational for a 1st grader, maybe a 2nd grader, but by the time you were in Elementary School (3rd Grade), you would learn about volcanoes in school. If you want to see an entertaining release from Mary-Kate and Ashley, then you could go rent It Takes Two (even though they are little here, it's still fun), Holiday in the Sun, When in Rome, and Our Lips are Sealed.

  2. My favorite books all put to one video what can I say? This video is THE BEST EVER!!!

5 comments about Pippi Longstocking (1997).

  1. It's been 10 years ago since they brought Pippi Longstocking to life in the world of animation. I first saw this when I was 14, and I've already loved her ever since then. I've also read her books. Astrid Lindgren is an excellent author.

You may not know this, but there is also an animated TV series of Pippi Longstocking as well. Since Pippi was brought to animation 10 years ago, there should be a 10th anniversary special edition DVD of the movie which includes extras such as behind-the-scenes looks of how they brought Pippi into animation, interviews with some of the cast members, and even an audio commentary, among other features. They should also release Pippi's complete animated series on DVD in the United States as well. I had no idea at all her animated adventures were produced in Canada! I like the animated Pippi better than the live-action one.

Whatever happens, and if they ever decide to update the movie on DVD, I'll still love Pippi.
PIPPI LONGSTOCKING IS #1!!! ... for me, at least.

  2. My daughter has been a Pippi fan ever since I introduced it to her at the age of 12 months. Now 2 years old, she loves this animated version, but perfers the one of the 90s with Tami Erin. She likes the songs in this one, and I don't think they are so bad. It took me a while to get used to them though! This isn't like the original Pippi that we all know and love so well, but it is a cute, modern, animation to the beloved classic.

  3. I've watched Pippi Longstocking (Animation) since I was seven years old. And recently I've misplaced the VHS video. I couldn't help myself but to buy it again! Its a great movie! Fun to watch! Makes me laugh and want pancakes! :]

  4. A great story about a strong, creative girl and the non-stop adventures she comes up. Very positive, very fun for kids. My kids (2 and 5) love it.

  5. I didn't think it was possible to take the magic out of Pippi Longstocking, but this movie succeeds in spades. The songs are cringe-worthy, the story is choppy, and Pippi just isn't Pippi.

Read the book to your kid instead.

  1. I am a kindergarten teacher and every year, without fail, this movie becomes a class favorite. I have just purchased it for my own grandchildren. I would recommend it to everyone. I only wish they made it in DVD.

  2. Classic tale, told very well.

If you're looking to send your children a message about being an outcast or different, about improperly judging others, about the true worth of all things, this is your movie.

I can't remember anything that I didn't really enjoy about it. And at 30 enjoyable minutes for the whole message, the kids can stay focused.

Discussing the movie afterwards is definitely a plus. Great family and values oriented movie.

    Grab it!

4 comments about Scooby-Doo - Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle.

  1. Most people probably say this isn't worth your time since it's no where compared to the orginals, however I would so disagree since most of 80's scooby-doo are really hard to find. The fact that it lacks the possible charms of a good mystery solving then unlike the 70's ones however I think it was more focus on the humor to help obtain a younger audience. Anways if you are a good scrappy-doo fan and would recommend you get this one.

  2. In some ways, this is really bargain basement Scooby Doo. Don't get me wrong. This is an alright video, but I have certainly seen better Scooby tapes. The first episode involves the gang along with Scrappy going to a Halloween gathering at a castle. Soon, they realize that these party guests are really monsters. But they are in fact being haunted a ghost who possibly is a danger. I'm not so uptight that I'll deny this is an alright episode. But the plot is not really up to Scooby's usual levels. This episode is just a little too campy, and it lacks the charm we find in the better scooby episodes. (Notably 'Hassle in the Castle,' 'Scooby Doo and A Mummy Too,' 'Foul Play in Funland,' 'Go Away Ghost Ship,' 'A Night of Fright Is No Delight' and a few other episodes.) The second episode involves a tar monster haunting some archeological sights in Turkey. Again, it's a decent story, but it does lack the charm that we find in many other Scooby episodes. I guess my bottom line is that if [dollar amount] is not a big deal to you, you may as well add this video to your Scooby collection. If on the other hand, your budget is on the tighter side, try to borrow this first and then decide if it's worth the [dollar amount].

  3. This is the only complete episode of Scooby-Doo I have ever seen and its amazing it did not get me hooked on the show. Dracula is the perfect villain for the gang. Kids will like this and they will still like it when they stop being kids. Besides, Drac looks cool in this one.

  4. Scobby,Scrappy and the gang do this one really well. A wide variety of characters at Drak's castle make this very interesting along with the classical features of a Scobby Doo piece. The twist in the storey line ( when all the monsters want the gang to help them) is different and keeps the story interesting. Well done Scoob.....

5 comments about Animal Crackers.

  1. The whole family really enjoys listening to this! I have played it while friends were here and they went out and bought it for their kids/ nieces, nephews, etc., immediately. When you are sometimes forced to listen to cacaphonic electronic toys ad nauseum, this is a really welcome relief!

  2. overall ok. There are better children's cds. Some of the songs are really twisted and a little dark for kids. And I am usually the last to say so.

  3. Wee Hairy Beasties brings together a mix of bluegrass, Dixieland jazz, and blues that offers a relevant blueprint for a model of goofy kids' music that demands stellar musicianship and timelessness. If the band could be said to have a frontman it'd be former Mekons member John Langford, whose aggressive but friendly brogue makes a major contribution in addition to his lead acoustic guitar playing and percussion work; other band members and guests also take on vocal duties in a well-balanced blend of voices on this entertaining and often downright funny album.

The band isn't afraid of caricature ("Housefly Blues" is what you might suspect, and "I'm an A.N.T." is a straight-up parody of "I'm a M.A.N."), but overall, Wee Hairy Beasties creates a unique and cohesive musical world for children to enter when listening to the album. Two of our favorite tracks are songs which purport to back dancing animals performing for listeners, complete with supportive hollers from the band and comments from the animals themselves. This album is a deliberate, if restless, throwback to an earlier time, complete with jug, kazoo, washboard, kick drums, and a lot of zaniness, and it works beautifully.

Top Tracks: Wee Hairy Beasties / Ragtime Duck / I'm an A.N.T. / Cuttlefish Bone / Cyril the Karaoke Squirrel / Lightnin' the Turtle

  4. great little CD, provides a nice break from the more saccharine toddler and younger kids CDs
The main problem is our younger insists on rewining to hear the first three songs over and over again

  5. Reviewed by Three Silly Chicks - Readers, Writers, and Reviewers of funny books for kids. www.ThreeSillyChicks.com

You may think that all we chicks do on any given day is read silly books and eat sprinkled donuts. And you would mostly be right. But every now and then, we chicks get a bee in our bonnet to shake our tail feathers and our groove things and our whatnots. And when we do, we crank up ANIMAL CRACKERS by Wee Hairy Beasties for delicious, romp-stomping tracks like Flies on My Taters, Ragtime Duck, and A Newt Called Tiny ("I call him Tiny because he's my newt.")

Featuring Kelly Hogan, Devil in a Woodpile, and British punk rockers Jon Langford and Sally Timms of Mekons fame, these Wee Hairy Beasties know how to raise the roof and rock the roost. Kids will eat up these jiggle-wiggle songs like coco pops while parents fall to their knees in gratitude for a children's music CD that doesn't induce nausea after more than one listen.

5 comments about A Duck in New York City.

  1. We received this book and cd as a gift. After reading the book many times we finally got around to listening to the cd. It's absolutely fantastic! My kids don't want to listen to anything else. Thankfully my husband and I enjoy the songs and sing along too!

  2. Cute, fun, and highly dance-able, "A Duck in New York City" is a must for any child's music collection. We like "A Poodle in Paris" as well, but "Duck" is slightly superior. The Belly Button song is a favorite around here.

  3. I initially borrowed this book and CD set from the library on a whim because the cover looked interesting. Two renews later, I am purchasing one for the house. I have a 2 and 3 year old who listen to this CD non-stop. My 3 year old knows all the words, and I must confess I DO TO. The songs are so creative and catchy -- you will find yourself humming along with the alligators. This is certainly a smart collection of songs that will introduce your little one to various styles of music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

  4. A friend gave my daughter this CD for her first birthday, and we've been listening to it almost nonstop ever since. The lyrics are clever and fun, and the music is beautifully scored and performed. I sing along with all the songs myself, and my daughter sways and dances. Highly recommended!!!

  5. This is a really cute book with great pictures and a very imaginative story that emphasizes the "I think I can" theme.
It is great for children of all ages!

5 comments about Cedarmont Kids - Toddler Tunes.

  1. Got the dvd quick and disc was not loose in the box. My granddaughter loves it!

  2. My grandchildren, ages 3 and 1, come running when my daughter pops this video in. They are fascinated by it and are so cute as they sing and dance along. I highly recommend it!!

  3. These are great DVDs---all children love these. I brought the DVDs to my daughter's daycare centre and the teachers, and all children enjoyed viewing these from the beginning to end.

  4. My 20 month old son loves the Cedarmont Kids sing-alongs! I highly recommend Cedarmont Kids toddler tunes, preschool songs, and silly songs. Please, please skip all the Singing Babies Dvds and buy Cedarmont kids instead you'll thank me!

  5. My daughter is 23 months old, and she has loved pretty much all the DVD's in the Cedarmont Kids series since she was about 1 year old. They really hold her attention, and she likes to dance to the music. This one and "Silly Songs" seem to be 2 of her favorites. We also have several of the cassettes. I think this is a wonderful series for children.

2 comments about Two Little Sounds - Fun With Phonics And Numbers.

  1. We bought this cd to get the "Wiggy Wiggle Freeze Dance" (which is great) and have grown to love many of the other songs. Ten Little Monkeys and Apples and Bananas are great. Good for riding in the car, dancing around or even before bedtime. The music only versions are a neat addition to see if your little one really knows the words!

  2. Two Little Sounds: Fun With Phonics And Numbers is an educational music CD which is especially recommended for kids age 4-9 and that adapts traditional favorite songs and stories to encourage learning, reading, and math skills. Playful melodies and gentle lyrics enhance a fun and stimulating experience. Tracks include Two Little Sounds, My Ramblin' Cat, Down By The Bay, The One That Doesn't Rhyme, Wiggy Wiggles Freeze Dance, Ten Monkeys In A Tree, Meet My Travelin' Friends, We Discover Number Patterns, Apples Bananas Peaches Tomatoes, My Playful Pig, How Many Are Here (addition and subtraction), Hickory Dickory Dock, The English Language Gets A Little Kooky (consonants), Five Pennies Make A Nickel, Tall Tremendous Tens And Wee Wonderful Ones, What Are You Wearing?, The English Language Gets A Little Kooky (vowels), and Good-bye So Long Farewell Toodle-oo.
