5 comments about Let Yourself Go: Celebrating Fred Astaire.

  1. "This is splendid jazz which also happens to be a popular song recital of the highest quality. Consumer advice? Buy it." ~ Andrew Vine, Yorkshire Post ~

On this fitting tribute album, "Let Yourself Go: Celebrating Fred Astaire," Stacey Kent takes the listeners back in time to the splendid world of a fine actor, notable singer, great dancer and creative choreographer all rolled into one, the legendary Fred Astaire. He earned multiple acting awards and honors for his remarkable artistry, which ultimately earned him the recognition as the the fifth "Greatest Male Star of All-Time" by the American Film Institute.

I'm glad that Stacey Kent and her long-time British bandmates Jim Tomlinson (sax), David Newton (piano), Colin Oxley (guitar), Simon Thorpe (bass) and Steve Brown (drums) have recorded a magnificent tribute album consisting of thirteen songs that identify Fred Astaire's greatness. All the songs are perfectly pretty and guaranteed to give the listeners an enjoyable musical adventure starting off with the title track, an Irving Berlin classic, "Let Yourself Go" to a gem from Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz, "By Myself" featuring David Newton on that beautiful piano accompaniment.

As an opener to this sparkling presentation, Kent will induce you to let go as she sings "Let Yourself Go" and will invite you to dance to the music of "Shall We Dance?" Of course, she will not take "I Won't Dance" for an answer.

What good is a set of standards without Gershwin, Kern, Berlin, Mercer and the rest of songwriters from Tin Pan Alley? Most of their best works are spotlighted here, from "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "A Fine Romance" and "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" to "By Myself," "He Loves And She Loves" and "S Wonderful." There isn't any lackluster song - these are timeless, tasteful and classy songs that are all freshly, ingeniously and perfectly rendered. Stacey Kent's impressive vocal style is at its best and the musicianship is simply the greatest.

This is a fitting tribute that I most definitely recommend not only to Fred Astaire and Stacey Kent fans, but also to music lovers who appreciate the Great American Songbook recorded in beautiful settings.

  2. This is the my most recent Stacey purchase and I like the song selection more than I thought I would before I got it. More up beat and happy than her more ballad albums.

A recent Washington Post article before Stacey Kent's appearance at Blues Alley said she had an "adult sexuality". I had to find out. Having listened, she has a coy, kittenish sexuality that come through most all her songs. A kittenish, cat-and-mouse quality. I have since seen her at Blues Alley and she does a great live show. Both her and Jim seem less pretentious than a lot of stars.

She has a small voice - she rarely, if ever, sings loud or with much dynamics. But the mix is always consistent and pleasant.

The fav song here is the sad "One for my Baby", but I really like the cheerful title track. You can imagine Fred and Ginger dancing across the screen. Jim Tomlinson on Sax sounds like Stan Getz back from the grave, yet again.

Stacey & Jim have made a number of albums. The differences between each are the songs, whether the selection is to your taste, the arrangements are pretty similar from album to album.

  3. Stacey Kent has a tiny, girlish voice, similar in some ways to the wonderful Blossom Dearie, but without, as far as I can tell, an iota of Dearie's transcendent wit and humor. Kent's album covers, with their glamour girl sheen, reinforce the idea that she takes herself very seriously. This album makes pleasant background music, but it's not a sit down and listen kind of album. The songs don't feel lived in, and she doesn't feel as if she has enough life experience to invest them with the requisite meaning. Still, pleasant sounds are better than unpleasant ones, and for that reason I give it two stars.

  4. Few contemporary vocalists interpret standards with new delight while keeping the original glory in tact. Stacey's voice is clear and warm; and unlike many recordings, the instrumentals accent the vocals instead of compete against them. Between Noah Jones, Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, and Stacey Kent, I enjoy Stacey Kent the most.

  5. I don't know just where Stacey Kent came from, but the first time I heard her voice I thought it was an old recording of Joanie Sommers. But Stacey has a certain knack for great phrasing as well, and she hits all the right notes.

5 comments about Beth Nielsen Chapman - Greatest Hits.

  1. I came accross Beth when my sister died. I remember hearing "Sand and Water" being played in the house after the funeral. Her haunting voice tempered with a clearness seemed to rest the minds and spirits of the family.

6 years later and my partner lost her father and I was asked if I knew any music that could be played at the funeral. I remembered the music of Beth and bought this album. My partner and her mother immediately fell in love (and cried) when "Say Goodnight" was played and this they choose for the final song at the funeral.

But please dont get the idea that this album is morbid. Its simply a delight of beautiful songs, sung with a clarity that is rare.

My partner has now fallen for "All I have", a beautifully crafted love song. Its become our song. Two people who have found each other and are just simply happy to have this love and dont need anything more. "All I have is all I need.."

A very emotional album that will lift your spirit whenever needed.

  2. A collection of depth and beauty. Haunting melodys and meaningful lyrics. An inspiring piece of work. One of my most played CDs.

  3. . . . then this is a great place to begin. Many of the tracks are earlier material and songs which Beth has written for other artists who went on to have hits with them, i.e. HAPPY GIRL, as done by Martina McBride and THE COLOR OF ROSES as covered by Bette Midler. Beth's versions are superior, in my opinion. She has a unique and distinctive voice which is capable of generating all kind of emotions in a person. Special mention must be made of the track ALL I HAVE, which still gets much radio play here in the UK. This is so personal, so beautiful and such an intimate love ballad that you can almost imagine Beth is performing this to you in your living room. This lady has the vocal style of the sadly missed and brilliant Eva Cassidy. AMAZING. SAND AND WATER, which was also done by Elton John, was also the title of her album she wrote when overcoming the grief of losing her husband to cancer in 1994, and has been used in ER, as I may have mentioned in my review of it. Great guitar work abounds on this track, both folk and classical influences collide ather well. I will also mention EMILY, which will have even the hardest man tearing up and letting go; LIFE HOLDS ON, which is full of hope, and a world-folk BEYOND THE BLUE with the mind-blowing Gregorian chant at the end - if the guitar riffing sounds familiar you may or may not know that Nelly Furtado ripped it off on one of her recent hits. I could go on, but I'll finish by saying you will be in for a treat. Very hard to fault!

  4. I enjoy this music and the artist. The songs are for a very laid back feeling and easy to listen to.

  5. Beth has established herself as one of Nashville's most prolific and successful songwriters (and for that reason she is sometimes classified inaccurately as a country singer), yet her own music owes more to folk, jazz and pop than it does to country music, even though Rodney Crowell and Jim Ed Norman (two noted country record producers) separately produced most of the tracks here. Beth's music has more in common with Joni Mitchell and Shawn Colvin than it does with Faith Hill, Kathy Mattea, Trisha Yearwood, Lorrie Morgan and other country singers who have recorded so many of her songs. As a country songwriter, Beth scored her first number hit with Strong enough to bend (recorded by Tanya Tucker) but, where this compilation is concerned, country fans will immediately recognize Happy girl (a country number one for Martina McBride). I'm sure that country singers have recorded some of the other songs here but none of them are as well known as Happy girl. Eventually, Beth's success as a songwriter spread beyond country music with pop, rock and folk singers recording her songs.

So this is really a collection of quality easy-listening music with other influences, especially folk. Beth has an outstanding, clear voice that makes one wonder why she has had only limited success as a singer, especially given her success as a songwriter. Actually, it seems that Beth chooses to record what she feels like without worrying about its commercial potential, relying on the royalties from her songwriting to provide her main income.

Death is a recurring theme in several of Beth's songs, but Beth likes to downplay it somewhat, trying to be positive (though the sadness and pain is obvious) and never actually using the d word. Maybe this is Beth's way of coming to terms with bereavement - she lost her husband to cancer in the mid-nineties. The opening track (Beyond the blue) is an ode to somebody (her husband?) who has already gone to heaven and who Beth looks forward to joining one day. The title track to one of Beth's albums (Sand and water) declares that we are all alive temporarily - actually, that album is the source for many of the tracks here. In another song (The color of roses), Beth dreams that a deceased person is still alive and says that the human spirit can overcome reality. Beth sings about survival (Life holds on), describing near-death situations.

Beth also looks on the bright side when singing about life, whatever the subject. Beth sings about her current partner (All I have, When I feel this way, I keep coming back to you, Say goodnight), a former partner with whom reconciliation is impossible, but a smile will do (Walk my may), a life-long friend who she rarely meets because they now live far apart (Emily) and returning to her parents for Christmas (Years).

Beth is clearly somebody who has experienced the best and worst that life has to offer, but who also has the ability to pass on those experiences in song. While she is normally happy to let others record her songs, this collection shows that Beth is a brilliant singer who is perfectly capable of recording her own material.

  1. This music brought me back to my youth when my parents would play Ima Sumac on the stereo. She has the only voice that I have ever heard with such range in both high and low octaves.

  2. As a young child in New Zealand of all places my mother had this as an LP in fact I still have it .She knew all about this woman and was fascinated by her voice.I was too and still am so it is wonderful to be able to get this voice on CD.She had an incredible range which is still mind blowing today I shall look forward to adding her CDs to may collection

  3. Outstanding CD will continue to buy from your company. Fast service and great shipping.

  4. I found one take of this record on some obscure Rolling Stone "Rare Tracks" world sampler. Its character, somewhere in between world, psychedelia, opera, put some eerie kind of spell on me.

Subsequent queries at some artist/album review sites indicated this best pick. I immediately ordered and received a loosely bound concept album ("aztec style") in song format, with focus on this beautiful, experimental voice .

Highly recommended for open minded world music explorers ... .

  5. My parents had both of the 10" records that were eventually combined on one LP, available now as a CD. The music caught my ear as a child, and then I rediscovered it as a young man, when experiments with pot and psychedelic drugs lead to this music being in heavy rotation on my turntable. But you don't need chemical augmentation to enjoy this incredible stuff, just an adventurous spirit; there is nothing else like either the music of Yma Sumac, or her voice, and few have bothered to imitate her (it's impossible, anyway; with the help of Les Baxter, Bas Sheva tried and failed). What, exactly, IS this music? Is it exotica? Opera? Avant-Garde? Latin Dance Music? The answer is "all of the above," and then some ... it harkens back to primitive times and anticipates acid rock. It would be at home in a tiki lounge, yet not be out of place on club dance floor. Check out a lounge/remix album called (what else?) ELECTRO LOUNGE, which samples Yma Sumac's music on a couple of tracks. Back to VOICE OF THE XTABAY, what was once a 10" record called INCA TAQUI makes up the second half of this album, and includes some of Ms. Sumac's most astounding vocal work. Among the first artists to play with vocal double-tracking, Yma's performances on 'Chuncho (The Forest Creatures )' and 'Maylaya! (My Destiny)' may be heard yet still not be believed. The first half of the LP features the musical arrangements of Les Baxter, and is slightly more conventional than the more ethnic sounding second half (arranged by then-husband Moises Vivanco), yet taken as a whole, this is probably Sumac's most powerful effort. For a look at the beautiful Yma Sumac in person, see the campy 1954 Charlton Heston adventure film SECRET OF THE INCAS, in which she pantomimes to a couple of songs from VOICE OF THE XTABAY. The cover of this album is taken from the set of that movie. For further listening, seek out the stereo version of FUEGO DEL ANDE (my personal favorite Yma Sumac record). I am still waiting for a CD issue of 1972's MIRACLES, a failed attempt at a comeback, which is, nevermind the dismal reviews it got at the time, a stunner, sounding like a cross between the Yma of old and Led Zeppelin! Unfortunately, this album did see digital reissue as YMA ROCKS for a brief time and, drat it, I missed it ... I think its time has come again. Is anyone listening?

  1. You have a lot of CD choices from which to choose in front of you, and reviewers (all experts) whine: which compilation sounds bad, how so many good ones were left out, how some are re-records, etc. So I am very glad to have this particular CD for my very own. I made a good choice. And the songs herein are all in such perfect harmony and covering so much of the Mills' career, and I am so glad to see so little negativity on the reviews of THIS compilation. Avoid the naysayers (who know better than us); buy THIS CD before they discover it and rain on your parade.

  2. paper doll&cab driver alone make this a must have.there vocals are rich and timeless.they have exactly in there music everything that is missing from much of todays and that is harmony and structure.

  3. I am a child of the '90s, and I first heard of The Mills Brothers on "Millenium", with their song "Till Then". I loved the song when I first heard it, and I still do. It's haunting melody and sooting lyrics that blend together to create a tune you'll carry with you forever.

  4. While the Mills Brothers were "before my time," I remember my mother singing "Paper Doll" and "Glow Worm" to me while she brushed my hair when I was a very little girl. Then I heard the Mills Brothers sing both of those songs on an Oldies radio station, and I was hooked. Their voices blend so beautifully, and their harmony is so incredible that it's difficult to believe that anyone who loves music would not love this album. From the poignant "Till Then" of the WWII years to the upbeat "Be My Life's Companion," this group knows their way around a song. Everyone will have his or her personal favorites--mine are still "Paper Doll" and "Glow Worm." My one regret--I can't help but wish that this album also featured "When You Were Sweet Sixteen," but if it did, it would rate six stars, and I can only give five. If you like real melodies, meaningful lyrics, and voices that will never grow old, buy this album.

  5. The Mills Brothers were one of the absolute best male vocal groups from the 30's thru the 50's. Having grown up listening to them I had to get this cd when it first came out and it gets played quite often. This includes all their best hits including the hard to find "Cab Driver" which is not found on other best of collections. For wonderful music with beautiful vocals, add this to your collection and enjoy.

  1. HOW DID I MISS THIS FOR SO LONG!!!

Oh my God woman...where did you come from???

Celine's best works are in her native voice...she reigns supreme!!!
An angel...she will take you to the heavens each and every time.

'Rien N'Est Vraiment Fini' sends chills right on through me...
beyond comparison if you enjoy her style and body of works.
This has become my favorite piece to date.

You have blessed my life with your music Celine, thank you kindly.
    How will you ever know???

    Bravo!!!

  2. Not a trascendent sound. If you are a CEline fan, you will be pleased, but that's it.

  3. I love this CD, don't get me wrong; I like Celine Dion, even the pop albums that she has been accused of "selling out" with.
But this CD is by far her best in a while! It shows her voice as what it really is, amazing, with out needing any synthesized sounds. I enjoy the songs with Jean-Jacques Goldman the most; a great singer/song writer with a wonderful voice on showcase!
Even if you don't understand French you will enjoy the feeling and power put into this CD. I would recommend this album to any Celine lover, and for anyone who's not...give this one a try, you might find she does have "the pipes" after all : )

  4. Excellent album but not as good as her earlier albums en Francais, in terms of the songs' melodies and lyrics. Yet it is still Celine.

  5. Just when you think she couldn't get any better, she did. This amazing album is one of Celine Dion's greatest works. I mean it. There is nothing even close to this, it doesn't compare to all of her other albums. I used to think that D'EUX (a.k.a. "The French Album" in the States) was her absolute best, but this truly wins.

Never before have you heard the rocker chic in Celine, but with it's premier single "Tout l'or des hommes" you see just that. She also does a country-rock song with some of her best vocals in her career called "Ne Bouge Pas!"

She reprised "Et, je t'aime encore" on this album, but this time in French which follows the english lyrics almost to the perfect 't.' The video is probably her least interesting of her career, but this song is meaningful.

One of the largest highlights of this superb album is the 3rd single "Contre Nature." It is Celine at her best, the Celine we all know and love. This ballad is the ballad among ballads.

This album is excellent! Buy it! Do you have to speak French to enjoy it? Non, non...ce n'est pas necessaire...mais c'est tres bien si vous parlez francais!

Merci, Celine! Je t'aime et je t'aimerai pour le rest de ma vie!

  1. While this is not the best CD of Roger Whittaker, I purchased it for only one song - I Am But A Small Voice. It didn't let me down. This is a special song to me and is difficult to find. He is still great - voice, songs.

  2. sound like the songs(the bigger hits at least)are re-makes at a much later time!!(not as good). disapointing to say the least..>>The seller was top notch and i got the cd in record time!! << IT WAS THE RECORD COMPANY..NOT THE SELLER THAT I HAVE A BEEF WITH!! THE SELLER IS GREAT AND I WILL ORDER FROM HIM AGAIN!!

  3. I bought this album because I've always liked Roger Whitaker's singing and incredible whistling. This album brought back so many memories. My husband and I have been listening to it in the car. Very upbeat.

  4. Everyone can enjoy Roger whittaker.
    This cd is no exception.
This is a great collection of his songs.
My nieces who are very young actually love his songs and try singing along. It's mellow despite his strong voice and I love it playing in the background whatever I do.
    Highly recommended.

  5. I discovered Roger Whittaker in the early 1970s. Some of the songs on this CD/album are very important to me. I especially love the nautical themed ones and "You are my Miracle".

5 comments about Hello, Dolly! (1964 Original Broadway Cast).

  1. I have to say this deluxe edition is a welcome add-on to my CD collection...I now have the Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey, and Mary Martin versions on CD...I believe Arkiv Music is the only vendor for the Mary Martin "London" version, but if you go to their website you can get that version as well as the Pearl Bailey version for $13.99 per copy...there are not any liner notes on either one, but was nice to finally replace my LP's with the CD's...I also purchased Jerry Herman's "The Grand Tour" for that price too!! I must mention the extra's on this Deluxe version are outstanding and liner notes are formidable!! It was nice to hear the numbers that Jerry Herman created for Ethel Merman, and to hear Pearlie Mae's rendition of So Long Dearie.....If there were only recordings made of some of the other Broadway star's Dolly's..like Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, and Ethel Merman (the complete shows of these performers), although they only performed the role for a few months..I know Phyllis Diller, and Eve Arden also performed the part...When I was at Southern Illinois University in the sixties, I got to see Dorothy Lamour as Dolly in a roadshow on our campus (1967)....she was very good even though she was in her 50's at the time...What I most remember about her performance is what she said at the end of the show...she gave special thanks to our fighting men in Viet Nam and saluted them for all of their efforts!! Well, again a very well done album, and show, which we will all remember for years to come Amen!!

  2. This is the best recording of Hello Dolly! without a doubt. The ONLY flaw in the entire show is Eileen Brennan as Irene Molloy. Her voice is not the greatest, but it doesn't really matter. The bonus tracks are to die for Mary Martin's are spectacular and Pearl Basiley's are great and Ethel Mreman's are just splendid. The packaging is not great though. The booklet is glued to the inside cover. Inspite of the packaging flaws this is the recording to get. The bonus tracks are splendid.

  3. This is the original recording, with all of the best names included. Wonderful, wonderful music.

  4. Great re-mastering of original BWay cast album with wonderful other Dollys, particularly Pearl Baily who makesHello, Dolly! (1964 Original Broadway Cast) (Deluxe Edition) the title tune her own. It is still a great score and a delight to own.

  5. Hello Dolly is one of my favorite shows. When you listen to the cast album, you really do--as others have said--feel the excitement of being there on opening night when Broadway history was being made. The wonderful RCA cast album has been a best seller for 43 years. But while I do feel it is necessary for any musical fan to have this cast recording in their collection, this is not personally my "Dolly" album of choice. I have three of the 5 major DOLLY recordings in my collection; this Original Cast, the Barbra Streisand movie soundtrack, and the Mary Martin London cast on LP (the others I do not have are the Pearl Bailey cast album and the Carol Channing revival). My preferred recording is a tie between the movie soundtrack and the Mary Martin album, with this one trailing (not far) behind. As far as the supporting cast are concerned, the original cast wins hand down. But HELLO DOLLY is really about the star, and in my opinion, Carol Channing can't sing...err, croak...her way out of a cardboard box. I realize that that is Channing's trademark, but it just doesn't work for me. As I said, this album is required equipment in any serious musical lover's collection, but I think that I too will "stick with Streisand." And for God's sake, I wish RCA would get off their rump and get the Mary Martin cast album out on CD, and reissue the Pearl Bailey cast album too while they're at it!

5 comments about City of Angels (1990 Original Broadway Cast).

  1. Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.

  2. A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.

  3. City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

    3) What You Don't Know About Women
    6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
    9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
    10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
    11) You're Nothing Without Me
    13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)

  4. 1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:

    Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
    Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
    Funny

    Great cast ... great buy!

  5. This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

5 comments about Phantom: The American Musical Sensation (1992 Studio Cast).

  1. This show is a must see on stage and the CD is a must buy. It is romantic, lush, and powerful.

  2. This is a great musical! It is too bad it rarely shows. The songs are great too!

Melodie de Paris - It has a smooth melody that rocks back and forth! It truly is the "Melodie de Paris"

Paris is a Tomb - This one has a dark melody to it. It is not my favorite one on the CD.

Dressing for the Night - This one is jumpy. It's like a fun-filled melody.

Where in the World - This was a good song! This is one of my favorite songs on the CD! The Phantom was looking for a girl with a nice voice.

This Place is Mine - This is a another jumpy song. Carlotta's voice is a little animated. I think it is just part of her role.

Home - This is my 2nd favorite! It has a smooth melodie that just makes you want to sing along with it!

Phantom Fugue - This song is fast. I find this one really fun to listen to!

You Are Music - This one has a nice melody to it. It didn't hit #1 though.

The Bistro - This is my 3rd favorite! "Sing!" has a nice melody. It doesn't last long. "Paree is a Lark" is sung by Carlotta. It is the same animated voice. "Melodie de Paris (reprise)" is just as nice as the first "Melodie de Paris"!

Who Could Ever Had Dreamed Up You - This song is #4 on my list. Phillipe didn't really thrill me. I liked Christine's part though!

Without Your Music - This would have to be #5 on my list. Richard White (The Phantom) does good for this song! There is nothing wrong with it!

My True Love - This is one of the #1's on my list! I love the melody. I listen to this one all the time!

My Mother Bore Me - I love the melody in this one! This is another #1 on my list!

You Are My Own - This is obviously, the last #1 on my list! It is a nice song. It is also sad because Erik is dying. Gerard is telling Erik how he is his father.

You Are Music (reprise) - This is the song where Erik dies. This is the saddest song on the CD. It is another #2 on my list.

This is a great CD! I highly recommend it! If I could, I would give it more than 5 stars.

  3. I bought this on a wing, hoping a little more than I got. I saw the women for Christine as Mariane Paroo in THE MUSIC MAN at Bass Hall, and loved her. So I looked at her biography and saw this. I bought it and was a bit dissapointed. The music is good, but not exactly memorible. So if your wanting a change from Webber, this is the thing to get. If your expecting spmthing close to Webbers version, look elsewhere.

  4. It is a shame to learn that Kopit and Yeston purchased the rights to the Pantom of the Opera but were usurped by Andrew Lloyd Webber as it was in the public domain in Enland. Otherwise, we would have this marvelous music to listen to as much as we now listen to Webber's work. In a way we are fortunate that Webber's work can be heard as well as Yeston's work as the latter was allowed to publish in the US. Still, it is sad to realize that the public mainly ignores this work as they think first, that it even exists and second, that it is inferior to the Webber's work. The fact is that Phantom is excellent in its own right and has great songs such as "Home", "Melodie de Paris" and "Who Could Have Dreamed Up You". I highly recommend it to anyone.

  5. I'm quite happy with this masterpiece. Glad to hear something different than Webber's Phantom.

5 comments about For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her.

  1. A boy gave me this album in 1964 or 65 for my birthday...(my name is Emily and I looked like the girl on the cover at that time). I listened to that album over and over and over. Glenn has such a wonderful voice. This album is my all time favorite. I love the songs on it....some I have never heard on the radio. I was sad when the record was broken. I have looked in every record store since trying to find it. So glad it is now on CD!

  2. As previously stated, instrumental overshadows vocals in 'Crucifixion'. I have the original album, with pops and snaps (actually 2 albums). By utilizing them as a template and boosting frequencies in vocal range, I did manage to restore it more towards the original. I wish someone would redo the mixing of this CD, hopefully nearer to original album, as I would buy it again.

  3. "For Emily..." is one of my favorite of Glenn's covers. "The Crucifixion" is another of my Glenn favorites and, sadly, on my copy of the cd the vocal is burried under the instrumental. In parts one simply can't make it out. I faxed this complaint to the record company listed in the liner notes. As it appears they did no take my complaint to heart. Avoid this one.

  4. As a long time Glenn Yarbrough fan I was dissapointed in this one. Glenn's voice is great when you can hear it. The instrumental portion overwhelms the vocal.

  5. One of the best by Glen Yarbrough. Bought the album years ago and have been looking for the CD for a long time. This is one CD to listen to over and over and it only will only get better.
