5 comments about My Fair Lady (1964 Film Soundtrack).
- I bought this soundtrack for my mom for her birthday-she loved it! Shipping was fine, price was decent, everything was in good shape...
It's good to see timeless songs surviving through the digital age.
- If you like 1960s musicals, this CD is fits the bill. My Fair Lady is a classic. Good quality recording from the film soundtrack.
- This CD of the songs from the 1964 film My Fair Lady really does a great job of giving you the flavor of this spectacular musical. The sound quality is superb; and the artwork is well done.
The overture is as beautiful as it was the very first time I ever heard it while watching this film. The lush musical arrangement works very well to mark the beginning of this classic and timeless motion picture. The strings sound great. "Why can't The English?" is performed mainly by Rex Harrison; he can't really sing but the way he essentially speaks his lines to this tune really makes this number hum along well! Rex Harrison is able to use his voice to boom out the lyrics to anyone even remotely within earshot--and this impresses me very much.
"Wouldn't It Be Loverly" features the Marni Nixon singing in place of Audrey Hepburn (Hepburn's singing voice was dubbed). Marni sings this with great sensitively and she pegs down that accent like the pro she always was! "With A Little Bit Of Luck" has the great Stanley Holloway performing to perfection; and there's a great number in "The Rain In Spain" when Eliza Doolittle finally manages to get the "proper" accent down pat.
"I Could Have Danced All Night" features Marni Nixon at her very best; the operatic qualities of her voice really shine through on this number! Bill Shirley also does a great job on "On The Street Where You Live." Bill could really belt this out! "Show Me" also showcases Marni Nixon's great talents as a vocalist; her voice sounds clear as a bell and she never misses a note!
"A Hymn To Him" is a very funny number performed primarily by the great Rex Harrison; he delivers this with panache, heart and soul. Again, his essentially speaking his lines never seems to interfere with his exceptional ability to deliver a song flawlessly. It's amazing. "Without You" again has Marni Nixon dubbing the voice of Audrey Hepburn for this great number from the ending portion of this motion picture; and as usual Marni delivers this with all the heart and soul of a greatly talented chanteuse.
"I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" is really the last musical number just before the ending credits; and Rex Harrison simply never sounded better! He aces this easily and it makes a fine ending musical song for this motion picture soundtrack album. Of course, we also get the music from the ending credits.
My Fair Lady is one of the best musicals ever made. This soundtrack album of songs and music from the motion picture is a must have for fans of the great musicals.
- I'm really just appalled that Audrey Hepburn is credited on this soundtrack, as she never sang for the movie and Julie Andrews was the original Eliza, so there's no way in hell that Audrey Hepburn qualifies for the "original cast" of any music recording of this show. Otherwise it's a lovely recording and brings back old memories.
- Some movie-musicals have it pretty easy. if filmakers can get the original broadway cast, or at least most of it, and include the majority, if not all of the songs. then they're pretty much set. for proof of this, look no further than 1964's adaptation of My Fair Lady.
SONGS
all of the songs from the stage show are here, which gives this soundtrack a wonderfully full feeling. the orchestra feels rich and lush on all the tracks, plus some purely instrumental tracks that really add life and fill out the soundtrack nicely. because most of the broadway cast is here, the songs all sound great too.
SONGS 4 out of 5
PERFORMERS
rex harrison, stanley holloway, and wilfred hyde-white all reprise their broadway roles and make their songs just as witty and clever as ever. they all sound just as great and add a wonderful broadway-feel to the album. bill shirley dubbs the part of freddy here, and since i fealt that his songs were fairly bland his presence isn't particularly noticable. the real difference is in the form of audrey hepburn vs julie andrews.
actually its more marni nixon (who dubbed for hepburn) vs julie andrews. marni nixon is a great singer, but the only problem here is that she should have been allowed to just sing the part. songs like "wouldn't it be loverly" and "just you wait" make it painfully obveous that two women are performing the part. songs like "i could've danced all night", "show me", and "without you" are great just because nixon is allowed to just sing the damn role.
PERFORMERS 4 out of 5
fans of musicals and this show will still appreciate this soundtrack, since even at its weakest, this soundtrack is still impressive. however, light fans will want to pass this over for the original broadway cast album, since evn if marni nixon had been allowed to perform the whole soundtrack, julie andrews is still more impressive.

5 comments about Falling into You.
- This is such an inspirational CD! I love her voice, especially in number 3 - if you're a ballroom dancer, this is a beautiful Rumba! There are a couple other Rumbas worth listening to as well. Please give it a whirl first and you'll be enchanted by her, even if this is some of her early work.
- Falling Into You by Celine Dion was a good album for its time but now this cd is pretty much throwaway pop. Songs I do appreciate include: Because You Loved Me, River Deep Mountain High, Call the Man, All By Myself, It's All Coming Back to me Now, and the title-track. The rest of the songs are filler. I used to be a fan of Celine's but after Let's Talk About Love album I lost interest, my music taste changed after that. Romantic album but nothing spectacular.
- I love Celine Dion music and this album is always one of my favorites. Even when Taking Chances came out recently I love that Album but this one is classic Celine. Some of my favorite Celine songs off this album are "Dreamin of You", "If That's What It Takes", and of course the ones that are more known; which are, "Because You Loved Me", "All By Myself" and "It's All Coming back to me now." I love this entire album.
- This CD plays and sounds as good as any new one that I have
purchased, and best of all, cost VERY little. Shipped to me
quickly. I am very satisfied with this purchase.
- This is Celine's best album to date. Filled with powerful ballads and amazing lyrics, this is an album that after 12 years I still like to play like I just bought it yesterday.
My favorite song is "If that's what it takes" which is the English version of the French "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" released in 1995, one of Celine's signature songs. The English lyrics are a breathtaking declaration of love and a promise to fight and even die for love of that special someone(I will risk everything, I will fight, I will bleed
I will lay down my life, if that's what you need
Ev'ry second I live, that's the promise I make
Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes)
This is album is Celine's masterpiece.

5 comments about Hair: Original Soundtrack Recording - Special Anniversary Edition.
- I bought this as a gift, and they really liked it. If you liked the movie/ musical you will like this CD.
- this special anniversary edition is better than I expected. I saw the movie dozens of times and it always gave me "crystal mistyc revelations" . This soundtrack teleport you to those places where the anti war movement is present, where the freedom of the souls and the bohemian life rouls your existence. Let "the tribe" play their game and enjoy all these 27 tracks full of life. "The air is everywhere..."
- I saw this movie when it came out and I have always loved the soundtrack. Someone told me the Broadway soundtrack was better, so I listened to it recently. I ended up appreciating even more how good this is. The singing is better, the arrangements are better, and I am guessing the choreography in the film is better (though I never saw the play--I was too young).
I would recount how great the various songs are but other reviewers have already done that.
- I love this soundtrack. Of course I would though, especially since the movie is the first and ONLY movie I have ever owned. Born in the early 60's I really didn't "live" the life - but by the time I got to college I was a latent hippy. I hadn't watched the movie for several years when I stumbled upon a scene while browsing on one of those post-your-own video websites - and I immediately dug my movie out from storage. After the viewing, went right to Amazon.com and ordered the soundtrack. I had to have it. Since then I have played it in my car, at work in my cubicle (with headphones on), and even on the laptop while I sit here today. The soundtrack captures the movie in it's entirety. Man, I really miss Nell Carter.
- Allready knew the music (had it as an LP for many years)
Like an old friend you meet again after a lot of years.
A-OK!!

5 comments about Billy Elliot.
- I saw the play in London while I was on vacation two years ago and it was fantastic. The film is great but the music from the play is complely different. If you enjoyed the soundtrack from the film you must hear the cast soundtrack.
- At age 12 I saw the original production of "Oklahoma". Then, yeah God,I saw the orginal "South Pacific, "kiss Me Kate", My Fair Lady", "Mame","Gypsy" AND let me tell you loud and clearly "Billy Elliot, The Musical" is right up there!!! Don't miss it. I saw it in London and can't wait to bring my grandchildren to the N.Y. production.
- It is charitable to call this show mediocre. The music isn't the usual Sir Elton theatrical music dreck. I guess that's a plus. The lyrics are awful. The same words are repeated over and over and over, so the pointed is quickly made, the song goes nowhere. Most of the lyrics are generic. Most of the songs give the impression of being the same length. I hope the show never makes it to Broadway. Stick with the movie!
- What a stirring musical! I had heard so much about this musical having seen the film version and knowing a musical adaptation was going to be made. Several people had recommended it after have they had the opportunity to see it on the West End. Also being a huge fan of Elton John, enjoying his pop records as well as his musical ventures, I was really interested in giving this CD a listen...
...and I'm sure glad I did! Again, I'll say it's absolutely stirring. The chorus numbers are probably the most powerful particularly the opening number "The Stars Look Down" which features as a theme several times throughout the score. You can really imagine them filling an entire auditorium.
Liam Mower as Billy has the sweetest most resonating voice. When he sings "The Letter" and his Mum joins in, you are moved to tears. Other great numbers include "Shine" where Haydn Gwynne gives her character of Mrs Wilkinson such a personality. Her voice isn't particularly outstanding but I love her character. It's nice to see characters like Mr Braithwaite being given some personality and filling out Grandma's back story with her own song "Grandma's Song". Other uplifting numbers include "Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher" and "Expressing Yourself".
There is mild language but it adds to the mood of the piece. All in all thoroughly entertaining and I can't wait for it to come to Sydney in 2008!
- A bit different than the movie which was delightful, this soundtrack remains very loyal to the original.

5 comments about Singles 1969-1981.
- It's the Carpenters - Karen and Richard - need I say more?
Top selling group of the decade (70's). Great songs, great arrangments and what a voice! Karen Carpenter was one of the most gifted stylist that has ever lived. These songs pay tribute to her timeless talent.
- Singles 1969-1981 is an excellent CD of hits by Karen and Richard Carpenter. As a casual fan, I was quite pleased and I never noticed anything terribly wrong with this album as some reviewers have noted. If indeed some of the music has been altered, whatever alterations they made were very good ones indeed! The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done.
"For All We Know" opens the CD with a melody that stuns me with its beauty. I could never forget the lyrics to this song; it's that meaningful to me. Karen Carpenter sings with all her heart and soul and she delivers this as if she's singing just to you! Richard does a great job on this number, too. "It's Going To Take Some Time" has excellent backup vocals as Karen Carpenter sings this with panache; she handles the complicated tempo and key changes like the pro she was and still remains! Richard Carpenter, of course, does his usual superlative performance and that's nothing short of sublime. Great! "We've Only Just Begun" is the sweetest of songs and as Karen and Richard Carpenter perform this song it truly gets such a sensitive, optimistic feeling that it draws you in by the very beauty of its melody. "Superstar" is a most painful ballad that always tugs at my heartstrings and it moves me greatly; I feel such sadness when I hear "Superstar;" this is one of the best torch songs I've heard--ever.
"Rainy Days And Mondays" also impresses me with its beauty even though the lyrics certainly aren't all that positive; and there's also "Goodbye To Love." "Goodbye To Love" has Richard Carpenter playing with all his might and it shows when you hear this tune. Karen sings this to perfection and the end result is that "Goodbye To Love" is easily a major highlight of this album. "Top Of The World" is an especially optimistic ballad and the strings are used to great advantage, too. "Top Of The World" has a fantastic beat, too!
"Ticket To Ride" gets a remarkable makeover as Richard and Karen perform their cover of this classic Beatles song; and "Sing" always brings back good memories--this was the first song I ever heard by Karen and Richard Carpenter. "Sing" has a wonderful message about living your life your own way without hurting anyone--and that's terrific.
"Please Mr. Postman" is yet another sublime cover of a great love song; and listen for "(They Long To Be) Close To You." This Burt Bacharach tune shines like gold when Karen and Richard perform this with panache.
The liner notes include an informative essay, too.
Karen and Richard Carpenter turned out hit after hit that still resonate well today because of their truly classic and timeless beauty. Their songs contained important messages about life that will never be considered out of style. I highly recommend this to Carpenters fans and newcomers especially will love this budget priced compilation CD.
- If only Karen could have hung on I bet her and her brother would still be making new CD's today. This includes all of there big hits and that golden voice.
- Although the songs are are quiet and considered more "elevator music" than anything, Karen Carpenter really had a beautiful signing voice. Her tone was clear and very emotion packed. Those who enjoy music you can sit and listen to (as well as sing along with) should consider this a must buy. Unless you already have all the individual Carpenter's albums.
- This Carpenter's album is great! I consider it to be one of their best! It will make you feel young again as you listen to these heart-warming songs. You can't help but feel that teenage spark when you think someone likes you while listening to them. Karen's voice can never be out-done!So curl up with your favorite someone and enjoy a romantic journey with the Carpenters. Or sit back and relax alone as you listen to these old-time favorites. You will begin to feel special and loved even if you don't have a specific someone in mind!

- A Great Collection, The Sound Re mix & Re Mastering is wonderfull. Add it to your collection
- I am very pleased with this purchase and the timely delivery.

- My Kids and I enjoyed the songs on this CD. It's great music for all ages!!!
- Perry Como is as always in superb singing voice and sounds as wonderful as ever. The songs on this collection have all been sourced from the Release Master Tapes and/or Metal Parts (not original sources like 1st Generation Master Tapes, but the next best thing!)
This CD gets 5 stars straight away because of the guy on the CD - Perry Como!
However, there are several problems with this collection. This IS NOT 'The very Best of Perry Como' - a more appropriate title would have been 'Some of Perry Como's Biggest Sellers'.
'The very best of' CD's should give compilation producers the opportunity to explore the performers legacy more thoroughly. Here, all you have is songs that have been released on 100's of compilations through the years, plus many novelty songs - all of which are superbly performed, but that isn't doing much for Perry's credability! There are at least 6 or 7 'novelty' songs on this set and the rest are all ballads, etc thathave also been released countless amounts of times.
A 'The very Best of' collection should look at the performers entire legacy and pick tracks from various genres, era's, etc and include them chronologically. 'The very Best of' collections should also give you a taster of how diverse the singer was. This collection does not do that!
Once again making people not take Perry seriously!
Perry is currently one of the most underrated singers of his generation. It is probably a lot to do with the fact that Perry did not have the enormous ego that Frank Sinatra had - which is most definitely one of the reasons Perry has so much respect from his fans!
Perry lived the quiet, honest life. He wasn't getting into trouble, his private life was his own and he was a realy nice guy!
Another problem is that he scored so many hits with Novelty songs (which are superbly done by Perry!) but, so many lazy music lovers who don't look further than the big hits are assuming that this was the extent of Perry's legacy! THEY ARE TOTALLY WRONG!
I suggest that those of you who think that Perry's extent of music is mainly novelty songs should check out the following website: www.kokomo.ca - a superb website, cataloging Perry's -'Known to Exist' discography. You WILL be impressed, if you appreciate and enjoy top class performers and music.
There is one very special addition to this collection. It is an alternate take of 'It's impossible' - Which will interest any Como enthusiasts!
Perry Como to me is the greatest singer in the World - ever! That's my own opinion, but anyone else, it is definitely a fact that Perry was one of the finest performers of the 20th century - without a doubt!
This CD is a great addition to any CD collection! But! Please do bare in mind that this IS NOT 'The very best of Perry Como'! To me every song is the very best! Pardon the pun, but 'It's Impossible' to make a 'The very best of' collection Perry Como recordings consisting of one CD! You need at the very least a box set of CD's!
Superb Listening as always!
Matthew Long
An enormous Perry Como fan of a much younger generation!
- The old barber Perry Como had the smoothest, most relaxed voice. At times he looked as if he was falling asleep. He exuded a niceness, a sentimentality that none of his compeers could match. He didn't have Sinatra's musical brilliance, but he had a kind of quiet integrity that radiated calm and pleasantness. My own favorites among the songs include one which I believe was his last great hit , "It's Impossible" and 'Some Enchanted Evening' 'If' . I personally do not go very much for the novelty songs, of 'Hot- Diggety -Dog' type.
Just relax and enjoy.
The songs included here are:
1. I'm Gonna Love That Gal (Like She's Never Been Loved Before)
2. Till The End Of Time
3. (A Hubba-Hubba-Hubba) Dig You Later
4. I'm Always Chasing Rainbows
5. Prisoner Of Love
6. Surrender
7. Chi-Baba, Chi-Baba (My Bambino Go To Sleep)
8. Because
9. 'A' - You're Adorable
10. Some Enchanted Evening
11. Hoop-Dee-Doo
12. If
13. Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes
14. No Other Love
15. Wanted 16. Papa Loves Mambo
17. Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)
18. Round And Round 19. Catch A Falling Star
20. It's Impossible

5 comments about Gypsy - A Musical Fable (1959 Original Broadway Cast).
- Merman belts the songs out of the ballpark in a way that Midler can't touch and LuPone only nears in 'Rose's Turn.' The additional tracks on this are worth a listen and enhance the perspective, like the included liner notes, of the final production.
- I WAS VERY GRACED TO SEE "GYPSY" WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD. THE NEW PRODUCTION WITH PATTI LUPONE AT THE ST. JAMES FINALLY MATCHES THIS....MICHAEL CULLEN..

By the time we're through entertaining you
You'll have a barrel of fun!
Gypsy remains one of the very finest musicals ever produced. With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim how could you go wrong? Well, they certainly didn't go wrong; and this original cast recording proves it.
I agree with people who believe that the overture for this musical is one of the finest ever written. It flows beautifully and seamlessly through portions of many of the musical arrangements for the songs in this musical. Impressive!
The musical score on this CD contains many songs that to this day remain instantly recognizable. "Let me Entertain You;" "Some People;" "Small World;" "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Together Wherever We Go" boast those catchy Jule Styne melodies and incredible lyrics that only Sondheim could have written.
"Let Me Entertain You" is the first song on this CD; and Ethel Merman as Mama Rose with Jacqueline Mayro as Baby June and Karen Moore as Baby Louise perform this flawlessly. The song flows so naturally that you completely believe that the two young girls are truly being coached by their domineering mother as they rehearse for a kiddie show in a vaudeville theater. Ethel Merman delivers "Some People" very convincingly; it is here that we see the first undeniable evidence that Merman was born to play Mama Rose. Merman belts out this song passionately as only she could; Merman blows the roof off the house.
Other great songs on this CD include the beautifully arranged "Small World" which is performed with great sensitivity by Ethel Merman as Jack Klugman joins in to make the song even more romantic; the moving "If Momma Was Married" by Sandra Church and Lane Bradbury as they deeply wish for a reprieve from their pushy stage mother; "Everything's Coming Up Roses" sung without a single superfluous note by Ethel Merman and "Together Wherever We Go" performed by Ethel Merman, Jack Klugman and Sandra Church.
Ethel Merman also delivers one especially powerful number at the end of the musical, "Rose's Turn." Merman's voice remains as strong, vibrant and passionate as ever as her character laments that things didn't turn out as happily as she had planned. The musical arrangement underscores Mama Rose's descent into a type of nervous breakdown as Mama Rose performs her swan song.
The CD continues with four bonus tracks that include entire numbers that originally wound up on the cutting room floor. These tracks add color to the original cast recording and enable the listener to hear even the slightest of differences editors made as they rushed to release the LP only one week after Gypsy opened at The Broadway Theater. Look for some interesting changes in "Some People;" "Mr. Goldstone/Little Lamb;" as well as two songs that were dropped from this production of Gypsy entitled "Mama's Talking Soft" and "Nice She Ain't." Excellent bonuses!
The sound quality is rather good although there were times when I could hear minor surface noise in the background. The liner notes offer black and white pictures from Gypsy and essays by Martin Gottfried and Tom Shepard. There are liner notes reprinted from the original LP jacket by George B. Dale, too.
Gypsy was produced several times more after this production closed. However, this is the definitive version because Ethel Merman carries the show with her zesty and powerful voice. Nobody could or ever will touch Ethel Merman as the quintessential Mama Rose.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of original cast recordings of great Broadway musicals; and of course Ethel Merman fans will thrill to these superlative numbers.
Enjoy!
- One of the best scores ever written for the stage!

- How we yearn for the bands and sounds of the 1950's. Good old Days? Hey, I am only 44 years old. This sound is before I was born. Compare to today's music, I will get lost in the 1950's anytime! Thanks Guys! Thanks Les! JimmyMac Clifton Heights Pa.
- This trip through Les Paul and Mary Ford's recordings is so delightful that every time I listen to it, I wish it were longer. I find myself singing along every time.
The long excerpt from the 1950 Les Paul radio show at the end of the disc is interesting and fun, but all known episodes from the short-lived show are available and easy to find on the Internet.
- Les Paul was one of the first in the creation of modern music. The album was a joy to hear.
- Very Good audiofidelity. Enjoyed the Les & Mary recordings more than the instrumentals however. From the historical perspective, Paul's productions are interesting also.
- If you're after a truly representative compilation of the works of Les Paul (and Mary Ford), then this is it. It's all there, pretty much on one CD. Thoroughly recommended listening for devotees and music lovers alike.

- I was very proud to have worked on all three("What's New","Lush Life",and"For Sentimental Reason's"with my late father. The last album"For Sentimental Reasons"wasn't released until the year following his death(1986).My Father and Linda were very fond of each other. My father would say that she(Linda)has a wonderful instrument. He helped her to get the most out of her"Wonderful Instrument"!C.R.Riddle
- ....is not just a wonderful handful of old standards by a vocalist of moderate capacity....the REAL treat is the musical arrangements and orchestral performance of Nelson Riddle....and how Linda blends her style with an outstanding ensemble performance which produces a superb example of the kind of musical skills thought to be extinct.
- As in the Albums "Lush Life" and for "Sentimantal Reasons" another stunning collaboration between Linda Ronstadt and Nelson Riddle of songs plucked form the American Songbook. Excellent interpretations - "I guess I'll hang my tears out to dry" will probably have you in tears.
- Linda Ronstadt and the Nelson Riddle Ochestra CD is just the right mix of hum-along easy listening music. Just right for anyone!
- Of all her collaborations with Nelson Riddle, this CD is the best...hands down. This CD sounds better to me today than it did in 1984 when I bought the original LP. Linda's voice was at her strongest and finest and it shows in her control and and precision. She waltzes beautifully through these classics and Nelson Riddle's arrangements are much more conducive to her style than David Campbell's arrangements of the Skywalker Symphony on "Cry Like a rainstorm, Howl like the wind." Overall, with only nine songs, "What's New" is a powerfull ride that is over too soon.

- I have been a fan of Anne Murray for years, both listening to her recordings and seeing her in concert several times. The song selection on this CD is very good. The production is one the worst I have ever heard on a CD. The sound fades in and out. At the times when the sound isn't fading the production is simply bad. I listened to the CD one time and don't think I can bear listening to it again. The sound isn't that bad on the Amazon previews therefore, I didn't expect this at all. I was considering the purchase of another of Anne's recent CDs but now I am wary and may not do so.
- If you are an Anne Murray fan you HAVE to listen to these two CDs! Out of this world!
- I ordered a CD of Anne Murray's 'What a Wonderful World' for my mother for Mother's Day. It arrived in a timely manner, was very reasonably priced and she loved it! One should never buy CD's or DVD's from anyplace but Amazon! It's convenient and very fast.
- I enjoyed listening to the CD...I liked Anne Murray's music to begin with ..I sat in bed and listened till I was ready to fall asleep..When I feel down in the dumps I put in on and listen....
- This is truly Wonderful. this is the second set that I have bought. wonderful when alone or with a group as everyone sing along. GREAT
