  1. There is no doubt about the feeling of George Michael's deep soulfulness. I simply often really do forget how remarkable of an influence he has been in the music industry. His songs have been more about art and heart for over 25 years in the music industry on his own, and as a part of Wham! during his 80's success. Now, he has another greatest hits records to celebrate his highs and lows in music. While there already is a nearly-prefect reflection of his big hits with 1998's Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael, another one was made a few years ago throughout Europe and mainly overseas with 25. A collection that made a big splash worldwide, has finally made its was to American audiences.

The 2008 re-release of Twenty-Five is a compilation that tries to showcase George Michael through his simplistic and soulful voice throught his 3 decades of making deep and somber music. The songs have all been remastered well from his past records and really sound great. The album includes so many of his classics from his big hits from Wham! including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, the elequent Careless Whishper and his mainstream solo efforts including the #1 smashes Father Figure, the upbeat Faith, and lesser-known songs that blend in well including the overlooked Jesus To A Child and his 2004 comeback single Amazing. The new songs also work like a charm here including his haunting and sultry collaboration with newcomer Muyta on This Is Not Real Love and An Easier Affair.

Unfortunately, This expanded edition though does overlook a lot of George's great tracks, which is the same thing that plagues the simplier, more widespread 2 disc collection. Twenty-Five does overlook a lot of songs that die hard George Michael fans might feel saddened that were omitted including the provocative smash I Want Your Sex, the beats of Monkey, as well as some of his collaboartions including his 1987 duet with Aretha Franklin on I Knew You Were Waiting for Me, as well as other great songs from his Wham! era like I'm Your Man and Where Did Your Heart Go. The expanded edition also brings in lesser-known songs instead that try to appeal more to George's die hard fan base with the extra third disc of songs include some decent songs including Cars And Trains, Please Send Me Someone (Anselmo's Song), and many others. The third disc could've brought in more excitement, but leaves a bit of a whimper to newcomers.

All in all, the expanded version of George Michael's Twenty-Five could've made up for some of the problems that the regular 2-disc collection had overlooked. Nevertheless, it still works as a nice re-introduction to an 80's icon who still remains a great guilty plesure from the heart and simply the voice. That here shouldn't be overlooked from George Michael's style. If you're new though to George Michael's music, you are mainly better off with either downloading buying Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael, or the original double-album edition of Twenty-Five.

  2. This has been in my cd player since I got it !! Love It !!!

  3. I love George Michael to death, no matter what personal issues we've heard about in the news lately. Listening to this cd makes me love him more than ever. I was just disappointed in how they put the song "Flawless (Go to the City)". They edited the curse word out & didn't even put the whole song on the cd. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying listening to one of the best out there, ever!!!! In my humble opinion that is.

  4. First off, I love George Michael, so I may be biased. However, my husband is not the seasoned fan that I am, so this 3 disc set is required listening in my car. It gets him reacquainted with George. The few new songs are fantastic and I wish he was played on the radio in the US. He has a powerhouse voice that can do upbeat and slow songs equally well!

  5. ITS A GREAT TO HEAR ALL HIS FAVORITES FROM THE BEGING, HES A GREAT ARTIST

  1. I'm from Chicago.....This album is very good old school, from Mendel, IIT, Chicago State, wharehouse. The person who gave it less is too young to understand....You don't buy this CD to spinn or mix....Its for Jackin.....Also it states all over the CD, mixed by BLAU,BLAU....just take the time and READ....... A++++

    1500

  2. I am a dj from the chicago area and i am faithfully seeking all old school chicago house music. As all real dj's know, you can't use a cd that has already been mixed by another dj. When I purchased Trax 20th anniversary cd there was no indication that the tracks listed were already mixed. This cd is totally useless to me. There should be some sort of indication letting the consumer know if the track listing is mixed or individual tracks.

  3. wow... I read about this in some mag. I first heard this while I was kinda coming outta my 'goth/ alternative' stage ~1988. I bought this cassette called House Hallucinates @ Rainbow Records (a chain that is now all out of biz I think). Anyways, there were these tracks on there that was a sound I had never heard before. I played that tape hundreds of times blasting out of my silver 16v Scirocco. :) So anyways... flash forward to like 1990 or so and we're at Bonnie Dune beach in Santa Cruz for Wicked's full moon parties with SF djs Garth, Jeno, Markie and Thomas just blowing minds. But I'm outta my gourd and a couple of these songs on this compilation come on and just like take me over the top. Well, some naked guy then jumped into a camp fire and the cops don't bust the thousands of people dancing under a beautiful summer sky but ticket everyone's car... but a handful. mine included... Anyways, AcidHouse was just so raw. This compilation/ label (Trax)/ sound/ etc just completely got me hyped on the whole thing and now like 15 years later still doing the do. I bought myself a TB-303, SH-101 and all that. Here's to the infinite beat...

  4. i first heard about this release in xlr8r, which was quite surprising since i was reading it at a studio run by vince lawrence, creator of one of the first (THE first, according to screamin' rachel) house tracks. he didn't go on to be a big name, but his track ('phantasy') is great. what makes this release so powerful, though, is that this is one of the lesser tracks on the three discs. not only that, the mix job on the first two is brilliant, carrying you from one track to the next without any break in momentum. if you like house, or you ever wanted to know what it is, this is the place to start.

  5. Well, I think everybody got to have this compilation..Trax it's the History of house, here are the sounds of the wind city, the 3rd millenium blues, here are the most beatiful spacey melodies you can hear, here is the beginning and the future of Music. The artists and the tracks here included are absolutely classics for every listener, try and enjoy it!

  1. Great, important, fun collection! I have to ask--why does the photo show vinyl, but no vinyl was shipped to me? Only CDs. Years ago, my girlfriend at the time got this collection, and there may have been an all-vinyl release (can't remember for sure). Regardless, she had some vinyl and I remember some songs that are missing from the 5 CD set I received. (For example, "Super Wolf Can Do It" was reprised as a quasi karaoke version called "Anybody Can Do It," letting you rap your own lyrics over it. Did I get short changed?

  2. you know what i hate? i hate that these young folk today do not have any respect for da TRUE SCHOOL. i remember watching that MAKING THE BAND when DA BAND was on there (what a friggin' joke!!!!!) and diddy told them to do RAPPER'S DELIGHT and none of them knew it. i thought that all of them should've been sent home right there.

young or old, get this!!!! no, it does not tell the whole story, but it will up you on where a lot of these "new artists" are getting their ideas from. any young cats that are reading this, respect da TRUE SCHOOL!!!! i thank you.

  3. So many people have forgot about where Hip-Hop started and some of the greatest MC's such as Melly Mel. This album is most important piece of my Hip-Hop collection.

  4. I like to dance on HipHopmusic, so that's why I like these CD'S so much. It's real old stuff of the '80 and the beginning of the '90.

  5. This album goes way back to the beginning of rapmusic. Back to the days of broken glas everywhere and casanovo fly. You can't have better than this. The godfathers of rap are in the house.

5 comments about City Lounge: New York-London-Paris-Berlin.

  1. If you're expecting a mix type cd - this is not. Individual songs - stop and go/close and play (remember making those type of cassettes in the 70s)- make this a disappointing cd. The Berlin and NYC cds are okay - the London cd is passable - the Paris cd is bad.

  2. It's great music with great artists. Notable tracks that I didn't have on CD yet were 'cafe de flore by dr. rockit', 'all that you give by the cinematic orchestra'

And notable artists: chet baker, st germain, i:cube, stephane pompougnac, chateau flight (notable song not on this cd is "camping jazz" of which I know the name), gotan project, the herbaliser, slow train, mr scruff, mark rae (from Rae & Christian), Aim, jazzanova, de-phazz, beanfield, infracom, truby trio, marschmellows, boozoo bajou, mo horizons, alphawezen, thievery corporation.

These are the names that I know best, and to see that many on one compilation is a blessing.

  3. I bought this after hearing some of the songs playing in a restaurant and asking what they where playing. Decided to take a chance with it and was not disappointed. In general, the songs are interesting, some even fun. The mix includes a number of styles and doesn't get bogged down by one type. There is a song or two that I skip over when it comes up, but in general I can let each of the discs play and like most of what I hear.

However, don't bother getting the second volume, it's no good.

  4. Nowadays when I venture out to buy an actual CD, it's usually a box compilation of some sort. iTunes has become a godsend; but I still get excited at discovering a promising CD on the rack and just taking a chance on what's there. For me it's part of the great experience of being a music lover.

If you get into the more relaxed side of club music and electronica--nujazz, downtempo, whatever--this collection will grow on you, one track at a time. In typical 'box set' fashion, don't expect to love everthing here; but there are enough tight little grooves to make it worth the purchase.

  5. There are places you can get the set for $24. If BarGrooves and jazz mix is your bag, City Lounge will fill the void. However, if you are looking for dance tunes, rhythm, beats that will get people up on the floor, this isn't it. I suppose the music would work best as background music (think KMart in a Bar Environment) while people are flirting with each other, concentrating on each others fleshy parts and sizes, and tanking Bombay and tequila.

Using it to pass time while stuck in traffic, or as a musical upper while on the way to work, isn't quite the goal of this sound. Be happy you bought the set of 4 rather than each one individually, as some tracks are better than others, and some CDs better than others, and maybe may make the $24 seem a justified purchase (vs. $74 or so).

Could be sexy enough music, but only if you are lying next to the other already naked and too lazy to get up and change the cd to something else...

5 comments about Jóga.

  1. 1. Joga(Howie B. Main Mix)-This track is a variation on the album version with very few minor differences (namely extra beats and a few new noises at the end). The beats are more "thumping" than on the album version, but the strings are retained so it sounds just as beautiful.
    2. Joga(String & Vocal Mix)-This is basically an orchestral version of the album track. very nice.
    3. Joga(Buzz Water Mix)-a toned down mix. Mostly vocals and some soothing keyboard and distant beats (which you can barely hear, sounds like when someone is wearing headphones and you can barely hear the beat of the song they're listening to). Further into the song, they put in a kind of annoying noise.
    4. All Is Full Of Love(Choice Mix)-This is the album version without the harpsichord. I bet the majority of people couldn't tell the difference though.
    5. Joga(Album Version)
    6. Sod Off-WONDERFUL non-album track with very powerful strings. This is Bjork putting her foot down.
    7. Immature (Bjork's Version)-a very stripped down version of the album track except with newly recorded vocals. Think acapella with piano. I actually like this version a lot.
    8. So Broken-another fantastic b-side. this one features acoustic guitars. nice.
    9. Joga(Alec Empire Mix)/10. Joga(Alec Empire Hardcore Mix/11. Joga(Alec Empire Hardcore Mix-all 3 of these sounded the same to me. It's basically just NOISE with scattered vocals. Ruines the song, totally useless.
So aside from the last 3 tracks and the unecessary "all is full of love" version, this CD is worth getting, mostly for the B-sides

  2. This contains ALL the remixes of jóga, and all the other songs from the three-part jóga single.
The howie b. remixes are great, the buzzwater remix is beauteous, the string and vocal mix is gloriously stripped down to its orchestral roots...and the original is the strikingly beautiful song we know and love...and the Alec Empire remixes are...Noisily energetic and gorgeous:>
The Choice mix of all is full of love, however, is unnecessary and without much discernable difference from the orignal at all. But besides all that, the extra songs, such as Björk's groovy, semi a-capella version of immature, the dramatic Sod Off, and the heartwrenching and beautiful So Broken, really aid in taking one on a glorious musical journey.
This is a great release no Björk fan should be without.

  3. This little CD is a mini gem that comprises all of the Joga singles into one EP, if you will. There are 2 great mixes of Joga one is done by Howie B., the other is the Buzz Water mix. They are minimalistic mixes and are a nice counterpoint to the menace at the end of the album. The B-sides are of mixed quality. Sod Off is excellent in parts, but is incredibly grating in others, the song is a puzzler. So Broken is a guitar driven song that has Bjork go way off the handle with the vocals, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Lastly, here comes Alec Empire. The hardcore master comes and offers his services; basically the songs are Alec going into a self-indulgent rage of hardcore beauty. If you started the song a minute in, there is no way you'd know it was a remix, but it doesn't matter. They're still pretty damn solid, and I like the way the vocals are worked into the remix. Overall, if you're willing to pay an admittedly steep price, you should get your money's worth.

  4. This CD is a must for two reasons: 1) So Broken: One of Bjork's all-time greatest B-sides (and true fans will know what an honor that title is), with beautiful, soaring flamenco guitar in place of the usual sonic oddities under Bjork's always beautiful lyrics and vocals. 2) The Alec Empire Joga, the scariest, most engrossing, most unbelievably different Bjork reconstruction ever. Don't be thrown off by it, it's a dificult piece, but I promise you it's all there, just keep listening. To be perfectly honest, I've had this disc for some time, and couldn't even begin to tell you about many of the other tracks. Those tracks are so standout they eclipse everything else. Buy it buy it buy it.

  5. This song is pure poetry-evocative of so many emotions. Highly recommend you see the video representation of this song as well. My favorite mix is the Buzz Water mix.
