  1. happy with the source and shipping. not as many top hits as i thought per my wife's opinion. not the seller's fault.

  2. Who would have thought? To me, they sound like a group that should have come from Louisiana or Southern Mississippi because of their deep Delta bluesy swamp rock sound.

This CD could have been improved just a little better. I see that they gave us the whole version of "I've Heard It Through The Grapevine", but I really missed having the full version of "Suzie Q" as I've always known it. I've never heard it cut short like it was here, and there is no excuse for it. It would have fit on this CD, in addition, to having even one more bonus track, like "Born on a Bayou" or "Midnight Special".

Oh well, I guess I'll just take what they give us and collect my own perceived shortcomings and make my own second Chronicles CD. The second Chronicles CD that they released, well, I could laugh. The second half of "Suzie Q?" What a joke! I'll make my own 2 disc "Best of Creedance Clearwater Revival" because I do need "Ramble Tamble", "Keep on Chooglin'", and even, the two other tracks that I just mentioned, plus there are other great tracks. Hell, I could even make a second collection that includes John Fogerty's "Rock and Roll Girls", "Centerfold", and "The Old Man Down the Road" from 1984. It's so easy to make a second CD of CCR to complement this release of Chronicles. So, thanks for the effort anyway.

  3. Got this today-I agree with all the other reviewers that it's great and you should get one for your kids! Brought back a lot of memories and I got to listen to some songs I had forgotten CCR did. Going to listen to it again now.

  4. They should have left out tracks #7, 15, 19, and included a major hit, Born On The Bayou, and a couple of other of CCR's big hits that should be here. But apparently the plan was to sell a follow-up album, Chronicle #2, along with it's share of filler tracks. This one is still worthy of 5-stars.

  5. This isnt my taste in music, but since I got it for someone as a gift I cant say too much about it.

  1. Thanks for the quick delivery. This CD really brings back so many great memories! Thanks again>

  2. One of the best compilations ever of a legend's songbook. Wanting to replace vinyl with CDs I started to purchase all of Young's great recordings and then found this collection, which captures the best of his music over the years. Dig the cover photo, too.

  3. I never understodd the nastalga behind this guy he can't even sing. The only song by this dude I can handle is "Rockin' in the free world" and even that song is nothing special, the rest on this album are just annoying. Another under talented overrated hack.

  4. There's colors on the street
    Red, white and blue
    People shufflin' their feet
    People sleepin' in their shoes
    But there's a warnin' sign
    on the road ahead
There's a lot of people sayin'
    we'd be better off dead
    Don't feel like Satan,
    but I am to them
So I try to forget it,
    any way I can.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
    Under an old street light
    Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
    She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
    There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
    never get to be cool.

  5. Greatest Hits being Young's 3rd compilation and is an album "based on original record sales, airplay and download history". The album was met with great reviews by the critics and was given a full score by Allmusic. It also did well with the public peaking at #27 on the Billboard 200. We get a list of whom plays what for each track. We also get a nice mini poster of Neil Young looking pensive with his guitar. 4/5.

  1. More Great Jerry with other Great Players, more memories of the best years of my life, living in the Bay Area and working part time for BGP.

  2. With so much posthumously released product---the Dead's catalogue, the Garcia/Grisman collaborations, remastered solo Garcia, and the JGB---it's hard to imagine that there's much left in the vaults to warrant euphoria from Jerry's devotees. But there is!

The newest release, Let It Rock, finds a skeletal version of the JGB. And this foursome, with session man extraordinaire, Nicky Hopkins, playing some gorgeous piano throughout---and even a few of his own compositions---plays with such synergy and vitality that it's remarkable they only lasted a mere handful of months. The playing is focused, bright, and inspired. The rhythm section is rock solid and Garcia's guitar tone has never sounded better: at times, it somewhat suggests the thick slabs of blues Roy Buchanan was known for when he was running circles around his peers in the early 70's.

Every tune is a winner here---from the lazy groove of "Let it Rock" to the bluesy riffing of "That's What Love Will Make You Do" to the delicious funk of "I'm a Road Runner" to the gentler tones of "I'll Take A Melody" and "Sugaree." Simply put: this is eclectic, melodic, controlled, and passionate guitar playing at its best.

  3. I own pretty much everything released that is JGB and this is easily one of my favorites. The sound quality of this performance, unlike a lot of JGB and Grateful Dead releases, is a-one; sounds like it was recorded in 2010. Why the same equipment wasn't used to record all JGB and Dead performances is an unfortunate mystery to me.

As for the music itself, there isn't a throw-away in the bunch; all musicians absolutely shine throughout. Tutt and Kahn provide a solid base for Hopkin's bar room piano and Jerry's unbelievable guitar work. I've listened to "It's Too Late" and "Road Runner" too many times to count and I can and never will tire of hearing them or any of the songs on this recording. As near to perfection as one could hope for.

  4. So, Is it more than a coincidence that the graphics of this cover closely resemble the album graphics of the Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, and Stephen Stills historic Super Session jam recorded in Al's apartment in NYC? Anybody have any inside word on this? Rhino? Nice company to keep as both sets are 5 stars!

  5. Garcia did many projects outside of the Dead, I saw The JGB many times at The Tower Theater here in Philly in the 70s. This is one of his first, but shortlived groups, I had never heard anything by them. This 2 CD set is refreshing with Ron Tutt and John Kahn who played with him and Merle Saunders at this same Venue.

Jerry is relaxed and getting some great tones out of the White Custom guitar. Nicky Hopkins is a master of the piano, his style is delightful and he is a different take than Keith Godchaux. The music flows or chugs along, starting out with "Let It Rock" which is a great jam, They do songs from both of their catalogs plus others and covers. The recording is a delight to listen to , very clean and great tones. A must have for a Jerry Fan.

5 comments about Wilco (The Album).

  1. Alt-country rockers Wilco have been together for a while now, but they still know how to cut a record. The addition of Nels Cline since Sky Blue Sky has added such a beautiful dimension to their music, and the joy and understanding that comes through on this record is nearly palpable. Starting from the eponymous opening track, where Jeff Tweedy asserts that through thick and thin "Wilco will love you, baby", the band enters into relational territory with the fan that few bands care to explore. Another highlight is "Bull Black Nova" which steadily builds with a noisy, consuming crescendo reminiscent of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. "You and I" is a gentle, couple's song that shows off Tweedy's softer side and songwriting ability of being able to do so much with so little. My favorite is "I'll Fight" with its messianic imagery and sacrificial message above a jaunting, spiky accompaniment. Though definitely not as ambitious as some of their earlier releases, Wilco (The Album) displays the band perfecting what they do best and leaves the listener all the better for it.

  2. Wilco being Wilco's 2009 release and 7th studio album is an alternative rock release and sounds like REM. The album was a hit in Sweden and Finland. It also did well among the critics. Allmusic, Rolling Stone and Robert Christgau all gave the album good grades in their reviews. All the lyrics are included in the booklet along with photographs of the band. 4/5.

  3. Tweedy has not written a really engaging melody on this record (although You and I comes close), but the band, the arrangements, and everything else that makes sounds like Wilco in top form. But the only difference between most these songs are the arrangements and the lyrics; the chords and melodies are just swapped around leading to a wall of sameness by the time the CD is over. I loved the first four Wilco records, they were filled with songs I could hum and "Sky Blue Sky" had its moments, but here Tweedy appears to be coasting on his laurels.

  4. I've enjoyed all of Wilco's recent albums, but this one is really quite bland, and their sound has lost its edge. The melodies don't grab, and the lyrics that stand out seem cliched or repetitive of older themes. They seem like genuinely good people, and I hope they can recapture their inspiration.

  5. Typical good songs but it would have been very interesting to see how this album would have fleshed out if Jay Bennett was still in the band at the time it was recorded. These songs are missing that extra "something". While I understand there were reasons for Jay and the band to part ways, I never realized how important he was to the development of the albums sounds until he was gone. While I can appreciate the contributions and playing of players like Jim O'Rourke,Nels Cline and Pat Sansone, Jay Bennett appears to have been much more important in his contributions than I had previously thought. Like Blue Sky Blue, this record is missing that little bit of something that Jay brought to Being There,Summerteeth and YHF.

  1. This is NOT an import, it is the generic greatest hits found in stores. It is not housed in a mini lp slip case, but the normal jewel case found in stores

  2. Absolutely acceptable musicianship all around: competent guitar, rhythmic bass, time-keeping drums, and above all, inoffensive songs that are very easy on the ear.

"Take it to the Limit" was playing in a restaurant whilst I was having dinner with my parents. Mom and Dad, who hate all things rock, weren't offended at all with this wonderfully benign offering. In fact, this material is so precisely innocuous that it finds its way into department stores and even strip malls.

In fact, one could use this album as the basis for a sort of bingo game: A few friends each get bingo cards with these and other Eagles tunes on them, arranged in differing orders, and when one of these songs plays on classic rock radio, the player(s) that hears it gets to cover the corresponding square. The first one to fill up a row (which would take about a day, tops) wins! What do they win? Why, the two-CD set, of course! Sorta relies on the honor system, but I think it still has promise.

Anyway, The Eagles had yet to release the pretty good "Hotel California," but this compilation has sold millions regardless.

(Tune to your local classic rock station...which tunes will it be?)

  3. never receved album in mail it has been two months since you took my money

  4. This album is good, it was put together well. I'm happy with it, and would recommend it to Eagle fans.

  5. This is the greatest of the "Greatest Hits" Albums by any rock band! Even though they are on the border of country, these tunes are the old California rock of the 70's and this is one to have in your collection!

  1. The first time I heard the Drive-By Truckers was a few years ago on one of those streaming internet radio sites. I was not impressed. I like country, and I like rock, but they were louder and more bombastic than I generally like my music. However, when they showed up on Austin City Limits a little while ago, I decided to give them another try, and they converted me. What converted me was not front-man Patterson Hood, but Mike Cooley. More mellow than Hood, Cooley presented himself as a subtle guitarist who favors tone and texture over flash, and his singing style has a brilliantly off-kilter rhythm, along with a perfect country twang. That caught my attention enough for me to pay closer attention to the band as a whole. When I did, I was rewarded with thoughtful and nuanced music that rocks as hard as any other band around. I was delighted to discover that the very performance that converted me was released as this CD/DVD combo pack.

The Drive-By Truckers may be easy for fans of older country and rock to dismiss as just a sloppy, Gen-X version of a Southern rock/country band, but I challenge anyone to listen to a Mike Cooley song and write these guys off as sloppy or derivative of anyone. Yes, Patterson Hood has grown on me, but Cooley is the one who just amazes me. Far from thoughtlessly bombastic, their lyrics convey the hardship of being poor in the South without self-righteousness or posturing. That is a difficult balance to strike. The performance here is strong, and while the band doesn't generally stray as far from previous recordings of the tracks as modern jam bands do, they do add something new. However, most fans will probably play the DVD more than the CD anyway. This is well worth picking up for Drive-By Truckers fans, and it just might convert those who aren't yet fans. It converted me. I only give it four stars because Southern Rock Opera sets such a high bar.

  2. Solid live album from the DBT. The DVD adds a lot, as this line-up is different from their previous DVD, Live at the 40 Watt Club.
If you are not familiar with the DBT, the closest I can compare them to is Neil Young & Crzy Horse. Frontman Patterson Hood is quite the storyteller, and "18 Wheels of Love" is quite a story, probably the best on the album.
I consider this a half-notch below their best works, like Southern Rock Opera, The Dirty South and Decoration Day, but well worth picking up , especially when you consider the value of the DVD.

  3. Being a huge fan of DBT, this DVD is a great way to see them at their best - live.

  4. Great post-Jason performance of the Truckers! Good balance between all members. Excellent Living Bubba! Cooley is spot-on as usual.

  5. I have been a hard core DBT fan since the first day I discovered them. I have always considered myself somewhat of a music snob. I like what I like, you know. I don't much buy into music reviews and the hoopla some of these "so called" critics like to put on paper. Plain and simple, some of it is just over-rated. The Drive by Truckers have become a total escape and presents in my life of listening to music. I found myself buying and listening to everything they've put out....and rightfully so. Being from the South, I "get" their music. I get it soo much that it makes more sense more than 90% of the music out today that is "supposed" to be so full of emotion, stories, personality and so on. The DBT have grabbed the spooky, quirky, fabled, hell raising, whimsical, fantasy, dirty, hard working, country-rock n roll SOUTH....put it on a record....packaged it...and made it ready for your listening pleasure.

I got the pleasure of attending the opening night for the "Brighter than Creations Dark" show in Athens, Georgia. My wife and I traveled more than 6 hours from Alabama and it was worth every second. What makes them even better than imagined is I am a musician myself. I know what a good show is....and then I know what a GOOOOD show is. THANK YOU DBT for putting ouy incredible music!!!!

5 comments about The Eagles - Farewell 1 Tour - Live From Melbourne.

  1. The DVD is excellent! If you're an Eagles fan you'll really enjoy this concert. I had forgotten how much I liked them until viewing this DVD.

  2. This was one of, if not the best, concert DVDs I've seen and I own about 20! They played everything you'd want to hear. It was neat how they played each others songs (Walsh, Henley and Eagles songs). The 2nd disc was particularly good, they really jammed. The acoustic section was a nice break between the semi-mellow 1st half and the rocking 2nd half. Schmitt, Frey and Walsh were the most entertaining on stage and Stueart Smith is a surprisingly good guitarist, I'd never heard of him. Walsh's "Life's Been Good" was fun and he jammed. Recommended for other 70s rock fans, but particularly Eagles fans!

  3. What can I say, this thing is excellent. I may have already created a review, but I just had to add a couple things. If you're feeling down, pop this sucker in the DVD player and the blues disappear! No matter how crappy the mood, this is a sure cure. I've owned Hell Freezes Over, which was excellent as well, but I've never seen the Eagles have so much fun on stage. I love it, love it, love it.

  4. This is one of the best, if not THE best, Eagles concerts I've ever watched. Farewell: 1 is essentially the definitive live collection of the most memorbale songs from the Eagles' amazing music career, as well as megahits from Joe Walsh's and Don Henley's solo projects. The Eagles have aged since they first hit the music scene decades ago, but these guys are very much at the top of their game. Joe Walsh performs better on guitar than ever. Timothy Schmit and Don Henley's voices sound the best I've ever heard them sound. The Eagles really went all out for Farwell: 1. When watching this concert, its evident that these guys really know how to perform to a crowd and truly enjoy what they do.

Don really gets a chance to show what an amazing frontman he is, especially when performing his 80's solo career songs with the Eagles. Bass player, Timothy Schmit's impressive, high pitched vocals shine on songs like "I Can't Tell You Why", "Love Will Keep Us Alive", "Hotel California" and "Hole in the World".

Joe Walsh gets a chance to be the smart-assed, fun-loving, goof that he truly is. (I vote Joe for the role of the next Joker in future Batman movies.) Walsh is given several oppurtunities to show off his refined lead guitar and soloing skills. My only qualm is that some of the lead guitar and solo parts of songs were handed over to the Eagles' stand-in concert guitarist, instead of Joe. Walsh, however, does get to perform some of his solo career songs, such as "Life's Been Good", "In the City", and "One Day at a Time". I am a HUGE Joe Walsh and Don Henley fan, so perhaps this review is slightly biased.

They only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was some of the songs that Glenn Frey either wrote, co-wrote, or just plain sang too twangy (i.e.- "Peaceful Easy Feeling", "Take It to the Limit", "Lyin' Eyes", "Tequilla Sunrise"). To me, they sound way too similar to one another and far too country bumpkin for my taste. I am however a huge fan of Frey's solo work from the 80's (which was more rock n' roll based). I was glad to see his hit solo song "You Belong to the City" IS included in the band's playlist for this first, and hopefully not the last Farewell tour. If you are a fan of the Eagles, Don Henley or Joe Walsh, then I strongly recommend you check this dvd out. Even new fans of The Eagles, Don or Joe will find something impresive here they like.

  5. I have to say, after Glenn Frey treated Don Felder so abusively (eventually firing him from the band) when Felder suggested a well-deserved salary adjustment, it just sapped all the affection I had for the Eagles. Not sure why.
But about this DVD: Were it not for the great Joe Walsh, this concert would be merely garden-variety Eagles music, immaculately played, but without real heart, real mirth, or any life. Without Joe, it would be three guys standing stiffly in a row. Their added brass section does provide spice--their black smocks look interesting. I saw the Eagles in concert in Anaheim, California in 2008, and again I have to say, it was simply boring; and go figure: almost no Walsh pieces were played. It was five guys standing in a row imitating Eagles records. There was no joy in it, no life. Such as in this DVD--except for Walsh. The band would do well to rename: "Joe Walsh and the Eagles."
I much prefer "Hell Freezes Over", which beamed with heart, passion, and unpretentious mirth. And Don Felder--before Frey beheaded him.
Glenn, maybe simply admit you were wrong and hire Don back, forgetting about the lawsuit, as if there are "no more cloudy days." And heck you guys, dance a little on stage; don't take yourselves so dang seriously.

5 comments about After the Gold Rush.

  1. Neil Young's third album, After the Goldrush, is testimony to his eloquent songwriting skills. Some of his finest work can be found on this recording. The album is mainly a mix of acoustic guitar and piano driven material, along with some electric intensity reminiscent of his second album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. This album may be forty years old, but it's still amazing. Young writes plaintive songs, full of yearning. Highlights include the wistful title track, the angry "Southern Man" written about racial inequality (one of Young's songs that inspired some controversy, as well as Lynyrd Skynyrd 's "Sweet Home Alabama"), and the absolutely amazing "Don't Let It Bring You Down". One of my favorite Young tunes has long been the short and sweet "Cripple Creek Ferry". Honestly, there isn't a bad song on this album and even the cover of Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me" fits seamlessly into Young's pastiche of melancholy, redemption, and yearning.

The 2009 remaster is simply amazing. The piano is bright and vibrant, individual notes ring out from the acoustic guitar, and the electric guitar snarls out from the speakers. Background vocals have a clarity not found on the original CD issue. This obviously isn't a repackage job to bring in a few extra bucks, but an honest attempt to breathe new life into a classic session. Even the CD booklet is printed on heavy, textured paper. After the Goldrush was already a 5 star album, but John Nowland and Tim Mulligan's remastering work has served to make it even better.

  2. Why are those four bars still missing at the end of the guitar solo in "Southern Man"? This was my main reason for buying this cd and again I've been fooled. Those were fours were there in 1970 and to my mind they should be edited back in. Don't make the same mistake as me!

  3. To the average listener, Neil Young is probably best known for his 1972 hit album Harvest and its #1 hit single, Heart Of Gold, but After The Goldrush, the record he released prior to Harvest, is arguably his best album. Virtually every song on here is a gem and taken as a whole are representative of the many, shifting styles of Neil's work. Rock songs like Southern Man and When You Dance are placed side by side with acoustic gems like Only Love Can Break Your Heart and the soaring Tell Me Why. But the most effective songs on here, the achingly beautiful Birds and the haunting title track, were recorded with a simple piano arrangement which only served to highlight the lyrics. The remastered version is as close as one can come to the original vinyl edition and well worth the price. If you don't have this CD, buy it. If you already have the original CD, replace it with this one. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

  4. After The Gold Rush is the second remastered CD I have bought from the Neil Young Archives series. The first, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere I bought because I didn't yet own it on CD. This one I bought to compare with the old Reprise label release that I already own. After listening to both of them many times, it seems that the benefits of the remastering accrue much more to the former album than to this one. As one reviewer noted, the remastering done thus far for the Archival Series is more apparent on the electric pieces.
As far as the music goes, After The Gold Rush is one of the most important albums of the last half of the 20th century. And while a remaster is long overdue, I have to strain my ears to notice any appreciable improvements on most songs. The benefits of the remaster are most apparent on the smug, preachy yet still powerful Southern Man. Elsewhere the benefits are quite underwhelming.
Like the Reprise issue, this CD is accompanied by an attractive booklet containing lyrics, pictures, and important album information. If you already own this on CD, whether an upgrade is worth the added expense depends on the quality of your sound system. But then, this remaster is so inexpensive it will be hard to resist. I look forward to further releases in the series.

  5. EVERY SINGLE SONG on this album is pure GOLD. Neil is truly OUTSTANDING in these gems. No song is tired nor can a music lover grow tired of them. Brilliance and folk-rock pay dirt here. If I died tomorrow, I'd do it with a smile while listening to this master piece...je

  1. Beatles for Sale is the Beatles at their early best! The vocals in harmony, the playing at their own standards make this LP a must for any true Beatles collector. Grab this while it's available, you won't be disappointed!!

  2. This is one of the more underrated Beatles albums along with Let It Be. The covers are great and the originals are a preview of what was to come. The 3 songs that open the album are some of the best they recorded during the early pre-Rubber Soul years. Definitely worth a buy, since it usually gets looked over.

  3. I bought this album originally because I couldn't find one of the greatest Beatle songs ever (in my opinion) on iTunes, John Lennon's version of "Rock and Roll Music". His passion and energy on this song is so infectuous, the way he loses his voice at the end! But in purchasing this album, I also realized a lot of other, lesser-known Beatle songs that still make you take notice "all those years ago"! "Mr. Moonlight" with the cheesy-sounding organ in the background still packs a punch, as does "Everybody's Trying to be My Baby" and "Honey Don't" -- two of Carl Perkins' classics!

  4. Beatles early fun songs. Mostly originals, with a few good covers. Released at the end of 1964. Music holds up as well today as almost 50 years ago. Can't go wrong.

  5. Have been a Beatles fan for 37 years (day 1). Can't feel anything but true awe for their music.
