  1. Transaction was great, more then great t be honest. I love this album and have been looking for it for years and didn't think it would come out on a CD. I'm thankful it did and I play it very often.

  2. The only thing better than this wonderful record, is to listen to it while drinking a tall glass of Tuscan milk, which coincidentally, can also be purchased here on Amazon.com.

While this album makes plain the existence of Satan, in doing so to brings a face to evil. Much as Tuscan milk proves the existence of Angels, God, Jesus and a swell afterlife.

The Louvin Brothers use their voices like cutlasses, cutting into the flesh of Beezlebub on every track. It's obvious to even the least ardent music fan that the brothers were heavily influenced by legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Herb Alpert and of course Nick "Hurrr" Gilder.

With all of these facts staring you in the face, why have you still not bought this album and some Tuscan milk? Do you want to burn in Hades for all of eternity?

  3. THIS IS THE BEST GOSPLE SONG, THIS CD WILL LET YOU GET CLOSER TO CHRIST

  4. These two Louvin Brothers were an acoustic, country duo. Their singing harmonies are terrific, and their melodies and song hooks are very catchy. If you enjoy acoustic guitar strumming and gospel lyrics, then you cannot go wrong with this CD!

Sometimes the lyrics are funny, sometimes sad, but always openly and overtly about God, Jesus, the Bible, and living like you love all three = the Christian lifestyle.

These Louvin Brothers have filled the songs with Christian and Bible themes, and there is nothing ambiguous about the lyrics and song titles.

I wish every Contemporary Christian Rock artist would listen and learn from the great lyrical content on this album! Too often, these days, the current bestselling "Christian" artists have album and song titles, and lyrics, which are very vague about any Christian content, IF ANY CHRISTIAN CONTENT CAN EVEN BE FOUND! Most of these contemporary artists are so ashamed of the Gospel that they don't want to look uncool by being open about an overtly Christian message. They mostly relegate all mention of Jesus to their CD liner notes, but reading their song titles, or reading their lyrics, you can't find anything that is Christian in nature. They want the song to be about anything you want to think it is about, so you won't be offended that they are secretly thinking about God, but it sounds like they are singing about their boyfriends or girlfriends, etc. As if they hope to "crossover" into secular music by watering down the Christian content of the lyrics and titles. Rebecca St. James is the only rare exception that I can think of concerning this awful trendiness, she uses plenty of titles and lyrics that leave no doubt about meaning Jesus and God, period.

This Louvin Brothers album, SATAN IS REAL, is full of good, sound theology! Apart from an Elvis Presley Gospel compilation, this is the single best CD of Christian music that I own, and it is especially impressive since it was originally released with all these great songs, from the get go. This is NOT a compilation made up and collected over many years and albums worth of songs, in a greatest hits fashion. They released this studio album all by itself, and it stands as a powerful Christian witness, and an overlooked milestone in Christian recorded music history.

  5. ABOUT THE LOUVIN BROTHERS, THEY ARE REALLY GREAT & WONDERFUL.

  1. Bought this for a friend who saw the special on PBS and wanted the CD. She was thrilled. I was thrilled because the price on Amazon was significantly lower than anywhere else.

  2. It's hard to believe that it's been five years since the farewell tour. Any chance of a "reunion tour"? This CD has some of their best-loved material, and no one can entertain or work a crowd the way Harold, Phil, Don, and Jimmy can. Remarkably, given the complexity of the harmonies and the speed at which some of their numbers move, they hit every known with such incredible precision. Their live shows, honed from nearly 40 years on the road, are the stuff of legend, and this CD is amazing. It would be hard not to be moved by "More Than A Name On A Wall", an amazing live rendition. Highest marks.

  3. This is definietely a toe tapping DVD. I watch this Statler Brothers concert at least twice a week. Such great music, their harmony can make a bad day into a haven of contentment. I relly enjoy and love this DVD.

  4. The Farewell Concert is absolutely awesome. This is a must-have for Statler fans. I purchased one for myself and other family members for Christmas. They loved it too. Great entertainment for the whole family.

  5. As a child of the 70's, I grew up listening to the Statler Brothers. The catchy songs, the beautiful harmonies, the comedic bits in their shows, these are the ingredients of musical immortality. I talked my wife into seeing them live in 1996, she was leery of going because it was country music, which she is not crazy about, and she was not quite sure that she had ever heard of them. It was mostly an older crowd and the opening act was not good. Another strike was that she was 8 months pregnant and it was June. When they came out on stage, the entire building just absolutely came alive. The look of shock and disbelief that was on her face when she saw how the audience responded to them just walking on stage was priceless. It did not take the Statlers very long to win her over. By the third song, she thought that they were VERY GOOD and VERY FUNNY. Two years later they came back to town and I certainly did not have to convince her to go to their show.
I have several of their albums, including this DVD and CD. Even my 14 year old niece, who listens to what is to me the most terrible "music" ever, thinks that at least they are funny and that they sing well.
I was sad when they retired, but they deserve to after filling the years with great songs and great family entertainment.
We at least have the memories.

5 comments about Fire on the Mountain.

  1. This album is an insane blend of seventies country and the blues jams of the Allman Brothers Band. Even the cheesy Trudy is a gem. From the first wailing notes of Caballo Diablo to the last licks of Orange Blossom, this album is on fire! Charlie knows how to jam on the guitar and fiddle!

  2. In this writer's opinion, CDB carried the live southern rock flag when the Allman Bros. went on a slide in the mid-70s. Sure, there were Skynyrd and MTB, and they had their own nice little grooves. But for double-drummers/ dual guitar leads/swirling B3/gritty vocals and hard rockin boogies, nothing in this era tops CDB. No Place Left to Go is one of the best southern rock anthems ever. Charlie has taken some different paths since (haven't we all?), but those were some good times.

  3. CHARLIE DANIELS BEST ALBUMS ARE NOT AVAILABLE ON CD.

Released in 1974, this is the fourth album from the Charlie Daniels Band, and the fifth from Charlie Daniels overall. It is also the first (oldest) Daniels album that is available on CD. It is 42 minutes long and the sound quality is fairly good, but not perfect.

This was the major break through for Charlie Daniels. His previous albums hardly got any airplay, until his third album, Honey In The Rock, with Uneasy Rider. Also, the FM radio stations would play No Place To Go. I remember the first few times I heard it, and tried to figure out who the band was (Allman Brothers? Marshall Tucker? Quicksilver?).

With Fire on the Mountain, Daniels hit it big with The South's Going To Do it Again. Sort of Daniels' and southern rock's answer to Peter, Paul and Mary's, I Dig Rock and Roll Music.

Long Haired Country Boy was also a mild hit. It has one of my favorite lines: "the early morning sun shines/through the bubbles in my beer". Also getting airplay was Caballo Diablo, a rocking country song.

Fire on the Mountian also included live versions of Orange Blossom Special and No Place to Go (at 11 minutes) for the Southern Boogie fans.

Like many of his later albums, Fire On the Mountain would be a regurgitation of earlier works. Trudy and Georgia were also on Daniels first album (called Charlie Daniels). No Place to Go was on Honey in the Rock and Orange Blossom Special was a concert standard for Daniels and was on other live compilations featuring Daniels and other southern rock bands.

For many this is the first Daniels album because the first four have been forgotten (almost lost). In the late seventies, they were re-issued, but with different covers and titles. Honey in the Rock was re-issued as Uneasy Rider and Way Down Yonder was re-issued as Whiskey. None of these are available on CD.

Daniel's first hit, Uneasy Rider, was a spoken word number about a long haired hippy type getting a flat tire in front of a redneck bar, and how he had to fight his way out once the rednecks realized he had long hair. In a nasty turn, he made a remake of Uneasy Rider, called Uneasy Rider 88 on Homesick Heroes. In this updated version, Daniels accidently winds up in a gay bar, and he brags about how he beat up the fags.

Charlie Daniels was in his thirties before he formed his first band. Prior to this he tried writing for others (Elvis did one of his songs), was a studio musician (played on some of Dylan's records) and was a producer (Youngbloods). With the Charlie Daniels Band, he did southern rock for nearly a decade before going more country. He has a "museum" in Nashville, which is the back part of a store in the downtown area, a few doors down from Hooters.

Daniels Band was probably the second Southern Rock band (after the Allman Brothers). He added some more country to the sound (the Allman Brothers were more blues and jazz oriented). He also added the ridiculous big fat good old boy personna with the ridiculous oversized cowboy hat. He had some good songs and added some depth ot the music with his guitar playing and fiddle.

  4. In the world of Southern Rock, this album tops the charts. Charlie Daniels does a great job blending blues, country, rock, and the wonders of the south on this album. The re-release of "Trudy" and "Georgia" are by far perfected compared to their original release on the album "Charlie Daniels". For those just getting into The Charlie Daniels Band, this album is a great place to start. A definite must for fans of Southern Rock and Country Rock.

  5. to me this is the ultimate CDB cd, with stand out tracks like, long haired country boy, trudy, georgia, the south's gonna do it, orange blossom special, to be honest they are all stand out tracks!!! if you like old lynyrd skynyrd, or the allman bros. or even marshall tucker, do yourself a favor and get this cd!!!, true southern boogie!!

5 comments about Everybody's Brother.

  1. If you want to hear music that is from the heart and raw, then this CD is for you. I enjoy music that isn't tweaked to sound pretty or "top 40". This man has gone through some stuff and you hear it in his music. Also, he has influenced just about everyone of this genre of music. ALERT!!! There is an extended version of this CD out there so don't miss out on a few extra songs like I unfortunately did.

  2. this is in my opinion the best album of 2007 and the best i've heard for a long time......not one bad song on the cd.......i listen to it nearly everyday!!! Great work!!!

  3. It's hard not to be a long time country music fan without hearing a Billy Joe Shaver song. In the 70's Waylon Jennings did a whole album of Shaver's music. And, since then, nearly everybody has covered at least one of his songs - Rockers, Country, Blues, Folk; they have all done one or two.
Shaver has always unleashed his emotions in his music. And a whole lot of his songs have covered the ups and downs of a rambling honky-tonk lifestyle. Yet throughout all of his music there were numerous references to his Christian roots and his long term spiritual values.
This album uncovers the veneer and pushes his values to front and center. There may be some who are turned off by the overtly fundamentalist Christian messages. The music speaks for itself. But, if you are a Christian (I am)and you too have walked down some tonky-tonk paths (I have), you are going to love every track on this work.

  4. Billy Joe is still going STRONG! everyone in the USA should listen
to the title track EVERYBODY'S BROTHER. It has a real strong message.
what a better world this would be if everyone lived like this, used to be like this in the USA. when people had respect for one another! God Bless America and God Bless Billy Joe Shaver for this very STRONG message

  5. I've been a fan of Billy Joe for many years and I have every CD he has released. I have listened to this album many times since I purchased it and I have to say that this is definately one of his best; not to far behind his very best, Tramp on Your Street. Billy Joe is one of the best and most consistant songwriters today. If you are a fan don't hesitate to buy this. If you are new to Billy Joe this is as good a place to start as any.

  1. Outstanding! I just can't stop listening to it. Charlie has outdone himself..., AGAIN! Charlie's rich vocals are icing on the cake to his fantastic songwriting skills. I didn't heed the advice about not operating machinery or driving and instead listened to the CD for the first time on my way back home from a bluegrass event. The first three songs are great and then I fell into the memory evoking lyrics of "Devil on a Plow" and after I finally quit hitting the back button to re-listen to the track (this took a while) I ran into "Alison's Band" and I just couldn't quit smiling. Then came the rock solid melody of "Whiskey Willie" and by now I'm hooked and I can't wait to hear the rest, still smiling when I heard "The Less That I Drink" I couldn't help but laugh out loud (Wife didn't give me a kind look at first but did smile herself after a while). (The lyrics briefly remind me of John Prine's "Other Side of Town" as I grin while I listen) By now I'm totally involved in trying to avoid an accident as I drive while looking at the CD case and listening to the haunting "The Silver Bugle", by the time I reach the delicious chord changes in "My Dying Day" I'm sitting in the driveway at home and I have refused to leave the truck until I finish the CD. Wife left me in the truck for the bathroom a song ago and I didn't even notice!
"Good News" proves it's true, some things only get better with age and Charlie Sizemore is one of them.
This album is a must have for your bluegrass collection and it's one of the Bluegrass Connection Show's 2007 picks for "Best New Album".

  2. A rock-solid bluegrass set from singer-guitarist Charlie Sizemore, known in his teens as the kid who sang lead in Ralph Stanley's band after Keith Whitley split for Nashville, and now a forty-something tunesmith revered as a songwriter of high standing in both the country and bluegrass fields. This is Sizemore's first album in five years, and fans are well-primed for its delights... Like many great craftsman, Sizemore appreciates the work of others, and in addition to several of his own fine compositions, and here he includes gems from Hank Cochran, Paul Craft, Tom T. Hall, three songs co-written with Nashville legend Buddy Cannon and a hillbilly boogie oldie from Eddie Noack. There are songs about the Civil War, drinking, love lost and life lived, and a hilarious tribute song, "Alison's Band" (where Sizemore fantasizes about hitting the road with bluegrass diva Alison Krauss...) All in all, this is a fine offering from an old pro -- hopefully it won't take so long for the next one to come out! (DJ Joe Sixpack)

  3. Playing Time - 39:05 -- Charlie Sizemore has always been an overachieving Renaissance man. In 1977 (at only age 17), the Kentuckian's first big challenge was filling Keith Whitley's shoes as guitarist and lead singer with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. During his nine years with Stanley, he established a strong and credible reputation as one of the band's top lead singers. In 1986, Charlie formed his own group and returned to school "to learn" at the University of Kentucky where he subsequently graduated with honors. The hard worker is known as the only bluegrassers to both play the Grand Ole Opry and deliver a college commencement address all in the same year. Sizemore today is a family man who also maintains a successful law practice and fronts his own band with a style that "straddles a line between mountain bluegrass and modern country." His debut on the prestigious Rounder label, "Good News" is just that - a set of stirring music that causes us to rejoice and cheer his re-emergence on record after a five year hiatus.

The first impression I gathered about "Good News" is about how all the chosen songs deal with a man's tender interactions and touching relationships with other people, objects, and personal thoughts. The album begins and ends with reflective personal statements. Songs like "I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up" and "I Won't Be Far from Here" reveal the emotional honesty of someone opening up to bear one's soul. At the end of the set, "My Dying Day" and "Good News When I Die" provide two different dichotomous perspectives on life's passing. During the course of the set, Sizemore revisits the album's theme with Eddie Noack's "No Blues is Good News" about the happy feelings of a successful, loving relationship. That tune conveys a different kind of mood than feeling like a stone thrown to the "Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart," a song which could've been arranged in a higher key to perhaps infuse it with more fervent energy. Sizemore also sings stories about a paternal relationship (Devil on a Plow) and a playful bluegrass musical association with the members of "Alison's Band."

His nostalgic song recalling the homeplace is Paul Craft's "Mama Turn Aloosa My Soul" that hastens back to a place in the country, just a single-board shack. Raised on Kentucky's Puncheon Creek, Charlie's own Civil War song (co-written with Tom T. and Dixie Hall) tells a poignant story of "The Silver Bugle" calling the boys back home. Another song from the Halls, "Whiskey Willie" is a bouncing ballad of a character who lived in that same time period and kept the soldiers half-drunk for a very poignant reason revealed at the end of the tale. In a more contemporary time, a rowdy drunk has an easy excuse for his wrongdoings, just "Blame it on Vern." Ron Workman's "Hey Moon" provides an opportunity for Matt DeSpain's lead vocals to have a conversation with that lunar body. It's a good snappy song that illuminates the set. "Hey moon, Won't you come on out tonite / Shine down with your halo so bright / Hey moon, while I hold my baby tight / Won't you light up her smile and come on out tonight?"

Sizemore collaborated with the album co-producer Buddy Cannon to pen a song about a dependence on the bottle, "The Less That I Drink." It would've been nice for the band to present a hard-driving uptempo instrumental showcase, and some of Charlie's material really seems to beg for some fiddle in the mix. Those are minor criticisms, however, and this band has powerful vocal and instrumental prowess. Besides Charlie, the group includes Danny Barnes (mandolin, clawhammer banjo, vocals), Matt DeSpain (Dobro, Hawaiian guitar, vocals), Wayne Fields (banjo) and John Pennell (bass). All in all, "Good News" is a very enjoyable and notable album that broadcasts the music of a very happening band that is making waves. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

  4. The Charlie Sizemore Band has put together a new album after five years. The new release is due on the streets August 14. Ron Thomason of the Dry Branch Firesquad, wrote the liner notes and says "Charlie Sizemore is back, singing and writing bluegrass music. He's better than ever..." That, is an understatement!! I've been listening to this album over and over again. This is one of the finest collections of lively bluegrass that I've encountered for a while now. Maybe being away from bluegrass is a good thing because this album has a unique character, lively presence and original presentation. There's nothing not to like here. Thomason also says, "This CD is filled with the stuff that demands your attention -- makes you listen. Don't try to operate dangerous machinery or start your taxes while Charlie is singing. You'll just get hurt." Among the humor, there is a bit of truth to this statement. You'll need to set yourself down and take a hard listen to this release. You'll be glad you did. There are the sole reaching songs like "Blame It on Vern" or "Devil on a Plow." Ballad stories like "The Silver Bugle" are here and a familiar "I've fallen and I Can't Get Up" are here too. Then there's a song about "Alison's Band" referring to Alison Krauss and Union Station. You get some Tom T. Hall material and rightly so as the album was recorded in Tom T. and Dixie Hall's studio in Franklin, TN. If this were a black vinyl LP of days gone past, the album would be a Slinky by now. It's been played, replayed and played again. We waited for five years for this event. We can wait a few more weeks for the album to hit the streets. It will be worth the wait! This is a well rounded album that will surely get your attention. Bob Cherry, CYBERGRASS

5 comments about Southern Gospel's Top 20 Songs of the Century.

  1. This CD is even better than I expected. It has all the great songs that put me into worship mode again and again. The songs say what I feel. I recommend it to everyone.

  2. A mixture of Southern gospel sung by some of the very best voices that ever sang. This CD brings back memories of the days when an old school, or retired 'grayhound' bus would pull into our church parking lot and I would watch joyfully as these rhythm makers arrived to make our hearts sing praises to God. I pray that this type of happy music will always be around to, "make a joyful noise unto the Lord"!

  3. When they say the top 20 they weren't kidding. If you use a MP3 player while walking or exercising you will love listening to this. This is a really great album. Also introduces you to some gospel groups you may not have heard of. Buy it you'll like it!

  4. This is the best CD I've ever bought in my 40+ years! If you love southern gospel, you'll like this CD.

  5. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS RECORDING--IT IS GREAT, FANTASTIC, WONDERFUL AND VERY ANNOINTED.--IF YOU NEED A BLESSING,PURCHASE IT TODAY. I WOULD NEVER SELL MINE IF I KNEW I COULD NOT GET ANOTHER ONE.

  1. The Fisrt cd is alot better than this one, but this one is still okay. I only Liked one song on this disc and it is. Track 4. Will The Circle Be Unbroken/I'll Fly Away/ Jesus Loves Me. Don't get me wrong the music is beautiful, but i think the first one is alot better.

  2. Awesome.... Again! Power In The Blood, such a blessing! I've had this cd since the release date... Still one I play often!

  3. A beautiful CD, and my personal favorite. This CD was a tremendous comfort to me and my family after the loss of my brother. We had selections played at his services that held special meaning for us, and made his passing easier to accept. Beautiful, Soothing, Comforting, Worshipful.

  4. Now this is what a country gospel album should sound like! Excellent. You'll hear no complaints from me.

  5. Anyone who enjoys country, gospel or those old hymns from church will love this collection!

5 comments about Universal United House of Prayer.

  1. overtones of gospel-tinted scottish r & b singer frankie miller, a bit of swampy tony jo white, a dash of the rootsy-side of springsteen, all a nice mix on this excellent disc. blues, ballads, rocking alt-country, and more than a little gospel can be had here, including an epic nine minute version of dylan's "with god on our side." all buddy miller recordings are well worth having. "universal united house of prayer" is no exception.

  2. When I heard Buddy's music on GAC, I was blown away. What an amazing combination of Dylanesque cynicism, musical talent and honest, grass-roots Christian spirituality. This album is a must buy for anybody who yearns for the honesty of the '60s.

  3. This is soul-touching music for people who don't DO churchy, preachy, didactic Xtian music. It's thoughtful, serious, soul-full.

  4. I am a big fan of roots music. This album is a beautiful, captivating record that consistently delivers great music, song after song. If you enjoy this album and are looking for some similar great roots albums then I recommend the following:
    1) Appalachian Stomp: Bluegrass Classics
    2) Ain't No Grave: A Tribute To Traditional And Public Domain Songs
    3) March 16-20 by Uncle Tupelo
    4) Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs Of Stephen Foster
    5) Every Sound Below by Tim Eriksen

  5. Buddy Miller's CD features his rough vocals and top-quality, heavy-duty guitar work plus a pair of screeching, ecstatic background singers, the McCrary sisters. On songs such as "Worry too Much," the results are spectacularly good. "Shelter Me" is another song I like a lot.

This is hard rocking, anti-war, socially-conscious, southern gospel type music. The touch is heavy handed on Bob Dylan's song, "With God on our Side." The tune is excellent but the words are simplistic, and Buddy drags the song out for 9 minutes. It pains my ears to listen to the words at the same time that I enjoy Buddy's marvelous guitar playing.

The concept of this CD is apparently to show that fundamentalist Christianity has a heart -- and a lot of soul. That effort succeeds and most of the songs on this CD are good or really good.

  1. Well, this CD wasn't what I expected but it's a keeper. I'd rate this CD as mediocre.

  2. You've never heard Merle Haggard until you hear this CD. Merle's rendition of classic gospel songs is priceless. You'll find it's the one cd you leave in the player. Every time you hear the songs it's like they're new again!

  3. This is a great cd for someone that likes the old gospel songs and country music. My grandmother recently passed away and she absolutely adored this cd - it brought her much joy.

  4. This CD was a gift for my elderly aunt, purchased because of one specific song ("one Day at a Time")that she wanted. She was delighted to find there were many of the songs on the CD which appealed to her, and she now has several "favorites" and plays the CD on a daily basis.

  5. I have always loved the deep tones of Merle's voice, to hear it praising God and portraying the even deeper truths about the God of the universe was a real thrill for me!
