3 comments about Sacred Voices: An A Capella Gospel Collection.

  1. There's not a dud in this collection of a capella gospel songs. The music is straight from the heart.

  2. This is wonderful music. I have sent this CD as a gift to a number of friends. I wish there were more like this!

  3. I found this sample of songs truly heart warming. There are lots of gospel music artists today who sing just the songs. This music has the "Power of God" behind it. I haven't heard singing like this since I was a child. We would go to different churches on Saturday nights for just singing services and you would hear some wonderful spirit-filled singing. This CD has the same type of singing; filled with the "Holy Spirit". Thank you Amazon.com for emailing me on this special sale.

5 comments about My Rifle, My Pony and Me.

  1. I bought this CD for the title song. It is the same as in the movie "Rio Bravo" (my husband's favorite movie which we watch all the time). There is a strange intro by John Wayne but doesn't take away from the song, which seems to be cut off at the end just a few seconds too soon. I like several other selections, including the theme from "The Searchers". The others are OK with some that are strange. Why have Lorne Greene half/talk-half/sing the "Bonanza" theme? Just give me the real thing. The CD has songs you wouldn't find just anywhere and I like that. I really wanted the Dean Martin/Ricky Nelson title song and the CD was worth it to me.

  2. A must for any man that loves westerns. My husband has played this CD so many times I'm surprised it still has sound. I have to admit that I also love it.

  3. This CD takes me back to when I first watched those movies and and (How Sweet It Is) to hear John Waynes natural voice when he introduces MY RIFLE, MY PONY AND ME. A treasure in it's self.

  4. Once again Bear Family comes through. There are some obscure tracks on this disc including Jimmy Stewart's Shenandoah and Dean Martin's vocal version of Rio Bravo which never made it into the movie!! Johnny Western's theme from "Paladin" is here as is the version of Frankie Laine's "Rawhide" with the whips cracking. I would liked to have seen Frankie's "3:10 to Yuma" and the other song that Dean and Ricky did from "Rio Bravo", "Cindy", and the them from "El Dorado", but all in all this is a very nice disc.

  5. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A must for both casual and die-hard Western fans. Great even if your sense of nostalgia doesn't reach that far back (like me; I'm 22). I love the combination of slow ballads and fast, jumpy songs.

  1. The early works of Hank Williams Jr. are very hard to find on cd. This disc, (like the other back to back collection), offers 6 gems from the MGM years.
This is a low-priced disc that will probably be out-of-print soon. Need I say more...GET THIS CD!

  2. If you like Old Country and Gospel music you cant go wrong with this one. This was my first Gospel CD and is still one of my favorites.

  3. Never knew hank had a light side to him.think i'll enjoy this c.d

2 comments about The Essential Masters.

  1. The 1966 passing of Ralph Stanley's older brother Carter ended their 20-plus year reign as a major force in mountain music, and briefly sidelined the younger Carter with grief. The following year Ralph Stanley rededicated himself to carrying on the tradition, and in doing so, created a solo career as a bandleader and songwriter that's outlasted the duo's time by two decades. His first work as the solo leader of the Clinch Mountain Boys included three albums for King that are excerpted here: 1967's "Brand New Country Songs," 1968's "Over the Sunset Hill," and 1969's tribute to his late brother, "Hills of Home."

Unsurprisingly, Stanley's initial outpouring of music carried on the sounds and themes of the Stanley Brothers, offering hill-bred string-band music that had the high-and-lonesome vocals of bluegrass but without the devotion to hot picking of his contemporaries. With guitarist Larry Sparks stepping up to the microphone, Stanley found another compelling duet partner to provide the high harmony for his songs of God, love, death, family and hard times. Everyone's in top-form throughout, praising Jesus, exploring the god-fearing side of Jesse James, and pining for a mean hill-country. There's fractured families, shattered love, and dissolute poverty, leavened only briefly by the comic joys of "Let's Go to the Fair.". Jimmy Martin adds a guest vocal to the love song, "Darling Brown Eyes," and fiddler Curley Ray Cline is showcased on the instrumental "Lost Train."

Stanley speaks directly to his departed brother on "Hills of Home" and contemplates his own impending passing on "I Wanna Go Home." It's not "O Death," or "Man of Constant Sorrow," but it's in the same patch. Those who want to hear it all can find the entirety of all three albums on the box set "Poor Rambler," but as a single disc, this is a superb sampler. It'd be nice to have personnel and session data, but that's a quibble given the uniformly high quality of the music. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2007 hyperbolium dot com]

  2. This CD is the first major single disc overview of Ralph Stanley's solo career, beginning right after the death of his brother Carter Stanley. The collection brings together the best of Stanley's recordings for the King and Gusto labels, many of them from the late '60s when he was arguably at the peak of his career.

    * Most of the tracks feature lead singer Larry Sparks, the man generally considered Ralph Stanley's most effective duet partner after the death of his brother Carter.

    * The release also features two tracks with Jimmy Martin (lead vocalist for Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys).
