- The Christian moorings of Paul Overstreet really shine like the stars of heaven in this particular album. Showing the beauty in both the everyday and the difficult trials, this is truly an album which will bless you all the years of your life. It is one of our families favorites.

- We found this "very hard to find" album on audio cassette. If you don't mind cassettes you can still get yourself a copy.
Transatlantic Sessions Audio Cassette
- While this title undoubtedly has its weak spots, it is, overall, one of the best compilations of folk music to blend American and Scot/Irish influences. In the U.K., this recording of a BBC television program received popular acclaim. However, in the U.S., its release came and went with barely a whisper. In fact, in the days before Amazon.com, I couldn't locate the CD anywhere in the Atlanta, GA, area. Finally, friends from Scotland came to my rescue with a prized copy.
Producer Jerry Douglas has assembled a strong sampling of some of the best acoustic artists from both sides of the Atlantic. While some of the names are familiar to American listeners, others have achieved little commercial success in the U.S. -- most notably some of the Brits. Singer/songwriter Nanci Griffith turns in her usual solid performance, with lilting vocals, evocative writing and adequate guitar. However, the selection she chose to perform is, in my estimation, one of her weaker efforts. Ricky Skaggs, as always, turns in a pleasing performance, making you long for the "Simple Life" of his Kentucky homeland. But, again, the choice of material is questionable, given Skaggs' rich catalog of work. Other artists, like Michael Doucet and Eddie Reader, get your feet tapping. On the flip side, Maura O'Connell evokes emotions from deep within, with her melancholy voice and compelling material. Performers like Rosanne Cash and Radney Foster turn in solid performances and lend the production a bit of name recognition. And even Paul Brady's satirical tale of fame, drugs and death can't make you feel anything less than disappointed when this CD draws to a close. "Transatlantic Sessions" delivers more than a collaboration of great talents -- it provides a rich cultural experience you'll want to enjoy over and over again.

4 comments about Taste of Texas: Songs 'bout Texas by Texans.
- On Amazon the track is attributed to Johnny Cash (who is not a Texan)
On Apple iTunes Music Store it is credited to Waylon Jennings. "But butter my Butt and call me a biscuit," if that ain't ole' Willie Nelson!I really like the first track! It's TRUE!
- Speaking as a displaced Texan living abroad in the UK, I loved this CD. It made my heart do flip-flops just thinking about my beautiful homeland. This compalation is one all Texans should have in their collection. If nothing else for Moe Bandys Deep in The Heart of Texas and two great songs by the Vaughn brothers. One more thing, if ya haven't been to Texas, ya better get there pretty darn quick. The people are friendly, the air is clean, and there's plenty of room. I love ya TEXAS!
- No other state can claim as wide a pectrum of good music as Texas. When you set out to produce a CD called 'A Taste of Texas', you find that there is no way to, indeed, present a true taste of Texas. The lineup of tunes presented on this disc truly represent Texas Music. George Jones, Willie Nelson (born in Abbott, TX), Kris Kristofferson, Stevie Ray Vaughan (born near Dallas, TX)....
While the lineup is impressive, it sadly leaves many things out. Texas Music without Jerry Jeff Walker, without Robert Earl Keen, Jr., without Buddy Holly, without Townes Van Zandt? Oh well. The Texas Music movement is gaining momentum, with artists like Jack Ingram breaking on to the scene in Nashville, and home grown heroes like Pat Green and Willie Nelson drawing sell out crowds at dancehalls and venues across the state. This compillation is important for anyone who is interested in Texas Music--sort of a starting point. While some glaring omissions kept this disc from earning five stars, it is one that I spin every chance I get.

5 comments about The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of.
- I would first like to say that I am NOT a 78 rpm collector. I do own about 250 CDs + maybe 50 cassette tapes virtually all of which are " Oldies. " Most of my Oldies primarilly consist of " Doo-Wop " with some Acapella, Rockabilly, Blues, Mid-60s Rock and R & B and lastly, a little Boogie-Woogie thrown in . Some of my favorite artists are JIMMY BEAUMONT & THE SKYLINERS, DION & THE BELMONTS, NOLAN STRONG & THE DIABLOS, THE PARAGONS, THE JESTERS, STREET CORNER SOCIETY, ELVIS PRESLEY, LITTLE RICHARD, JACKIE WILSON, THE COLLINS KIDS, BILLY LEE RILEY, BRIAN SETZER, BLIND WILLIE MC TELL, BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON, ALBERT AMMONS & PETE JOHNSON. I have listed all of the above because even though I own & appreciate every genre & artist listed above.....I also own & thoroughly enjoy the JOE BUSSARD CD.. " DOWN IN THE BASEMENT " !!!....As I said....I think that you DON'T have to be a 78 rpm collector to understand & appreciate that this is GREAT " STUFF " FOR ANYONE !!!!!!! ....Unlike other reviewers ( probably because I am not a 78 rpm collector ) I had not previously heard of the likes of the " Georgia Pot Lickers " ? ....However; like other reviewers I was attracted to " THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF " both by the Crumb illustrated cover + the knowledge that YAZOO never does seem to have any bad releases.....After listening to this CD; I can only agree that it really is " THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF "
- Much like the Old Hat compilation of records from Joe Bussard's collection ("Down In The Basement"), this 2-CD set is a hodge-podge of old-time string bands, blues, a little jazz, and other so-called "roots" music from the 1920s and early 1930s. This is rare stuff indeed--most of it unavailable on CD elsewhere, and you can forget finding copies of the original 78s! Fortunately, the transfers by Rich Nevins are marvelous; computerized "reprocessing" has been kept to a minimum and these records sound like they should: bright, clear, and natural. Yes, there's a little surface noise, but the serious record collector shouldn't mind that a bit. So many producers of reissues of vintage recoridngs seem to try to remove as much surface noise as possible, leaving recordings that are clean, yes, but dull and lifeless as well. Even with the light crackle, these transfers project a beautiful "presence." The selections are interesting too--I was especially drawn to the Luke Jordan selection ("If I Call You Mama"), Osey Helton's fiddle solo "Green River," and "Bells of Love" by the African-American shape note a-capella group, Middle Georgia Singing Convention No. 1 (and if you like this last group, check out the Document CD "Atlanta, GA Gospel" which includes their complete recorded output). The liner notes that accompany the set are lengthy, but unfortunately they reveal relatively little about the music on these records. The notes are mostly stories of how the records came to be acquired and ramblings about the hobby of collecting in general (not just records!) from producer Rich Nevins. This isn't necessarily bad--it makes for fun reading!--but I'd like to know a bit more about the music. Admittedly, there is probably very little known about the musicians on the recordings, but I'd have liked *something.* Also, as others have pointed out, there's no discography: no recording dates or locations, no matrix numbers, no issue numbers, no personnel listings, nada. In a set so clearly targeted to record collectors, this seems inexcusable. In addition, I'm disappointed in the DVD case-shaped packaging, which while elegant and attractive, doesn't store easily with the rest of my CDs. I would have much preferred a standard 2-CD double case. Because of the way the packaging has been made, it's often difficult for me to slide the booklet back into its paper pocket: the bottom frequently gets snagged on the cardboard foldover inside the pocket (something that could have easily been avoided with more standard packaging). Still, on the whole, this is a remarkable set making available some outstanding records in really outstanding sound. Every 78 rpm record collector should be delighted with it--I certainly am.
- This product is a quirky collection of roots music that really has no common thread running through other than they are extremely rare recordings collected over a long period. The discs are extemely well packaged with extensive liner notes. The notes also contain a history of two brothers who were eccentric (nuts) collectors in NYC.
- This collection is marvelous as a broad-strokes portrait of the music Americans were recording and listening to in a time well before the hegemony of the corporate conglomerate recording industry, when anyone with the admittedly cumbersome apparatus of the time could start their own record company. None of these songs were huge hits of their time, but many of them are treasures of American roots music. I've got to say, though, that it was the R. Crumb cover art that pulled me in.
- great release of old-time recordings. hillbilly music, blues, ballads, gospel, & jugband music; all presented in fantastic sound quality. if you don't have any old-time music in your house, this would be a good 1st purchase. if you have lots of old-time music already, you will need to add this to the collection. one of the best reissues over the past few years.

- My DAD had this as an album and would play it every weekend. He lost the album during a move and I will replace it with this CD. My brothers and I often talk about the great times in our childhood listening to these beautiful songs and listening to our DAD's stories.
I can always depend on Amazon to help me find these kinds of items.
Beautiful melodies and great songs..my children now tap there feet when I play my Chuck Wagon Gang CD's.
- "Mighty Close to Heaven" features good, hard toe-tapping male-female harmony in the Country tradition. (Yes, some may wish to stand). Favorite tracks are always subjective but this listener especially liked "The Son Hath Made Me Free" and "I Love My Savior Too". None disappoint. If there is a weak spot to this album, it lies in the paltry inserted jacket. Instead of four nondescript photos, why couldn't the producers have included some information about the group? Some of us may be curious! The 5 performers herein appear too young to be CWG originals. Where do they fit in? One may be reminded of the R&R group, The Drifters which changed lead singers over the years but kept the same mellow sound. That point aside, "Mighty Close to Heaven" offers wonderful, pure gospel music and warrants a 5 star rating without reservation.

- My son used this CD and song for his wedding this summer. They used this song as they lite the unity candle. BEAUTIFUL!!
- don't let the price fool you, this cd has 9 songs on it and many that are not on the ultimate gospel cd. i'm glad i bought it. there are songs i have never heard him sing before and he sings them so beautifully. epe really does an awesome job.
- I love the CD. Elvis has a unique voice, which helps explain his enduring legacy. The songs are old favorites and are performed with his usual perfection. Listening to it brings me great pleasure. I highly recommend it to any who enjoy gospel sung by a smooth voice with great power. The only flaw is that it contains only 9 songs. I wish it had twice that number!
- good elvis album if you like the music from the end of the 60's elvis made.
It's not his best work, it's more an album for the real die hard fans.
- ELVIS was always fond of godspell music so he would give 110 per cent when singing this type or religious music. This album, originally released in 1971, gathers songs from various sources: (There'll Be) Peace in The Valley, I Believe, It Is No Secret (What God Can Do) and Take My Hand, Precious Lord, were on an E.P. from 1957; Sing You Children comes from the "Easy Come, Easy Go" soundtrack (1966); "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "We Call On Him" from the 1967 recording sessions where Elvis was trying to reshape his music style; Who Am I? from the legendary 1969 Memphis sessions; and Let Us Pray, which includes one of the best rockin' bass lines from all Presley's songs, comes from the Change of Habit soundtrack, a godspell film itself. The King feels and gives himself enterely to all the songs as few artist could and can. The sound is great and at last the album comes with its original cover art, one of the best album cover of his discography. A Must!
