If you haven't heard of this wonderful bluegrass band & you like traditional bluegrass, then BE SURE to check out Dry Branch FireSquad -- either find them on tour (they seem to be on the road all the time!) or listen to some of the tracks above. All their music is great, but this CD is one of my all-time favorites -- I've introduced non-bluegrass fans to it & converted them with this album alone. From the heartfelt "Long Journey" to the peppy "Jesus on the Mainline," you'll find a broad range of old-timey Kentucky Bluegrass & Gospel music. I think their version of "Rain and Snow" is hands down the best I've ever heard and when I listen to songs like "Don't Ever Look Back," I can swear I hear my great-grandmother singing to me still. This is a wonderful studio recording for DryBranch, but they are also memorable for their live performances. IF YOU EVER HAVE THE CHANCE, GO SEE THEM LIVE. You'll never forget it. For a sense of their live experience, check out the CD "Live at Last" -- but until they come to your area, try this album. From the haunting vocals, to the zippy mandolin & banjo, this band has an honest-to-goodness old-timey sound that will have you humming (or singing) along in no time. If you're a long-time bluegrass fan, you'll appreciate these variations on old favorites (with a few of their own songs thrown in for good measure). If you're new to the bluegrass phenomenon and you liked the music in O Brother, then you'll like this band, too. Listen to some of the song samples & you'll see what I mean! Click on "Old Katy Hill" for an instrumental or "Rain & Snow" for that mournful mountain sound, or "I'd Rather Be the Girl You Left Behind" for a combination of harmony & fun. Enjoy!

1. if your a retard, or just a geek to the hard core then you might like this junk. if your looking to go over the edge, then listen to this. this music would drive you crazy, only a idiot would like this junk. they have no concept of what they want to be, and every attempt to change it, up sounds like poor attempt. just wait for this one to be in the bargain bin if it isnt already.



2. I grew up on punk rock and hip-hop, but thanks to this album I'm now a bluegrass fan. This is GREAT stuff! Go ahead, take a listen and smile along.

1. This, my friends, is the real deal - straight-ahead bluegrass from a consummate master of the genre and his very able band, recorded in Tokyo in the early 1970's. The quality of the recording is outstanding - note the Neumann mics depicted on the album cover. This CD has a nice balance of "Gospel/sacred" hits like "Memories of Mother" and "Rank Stranger." They also break out with "I Saw the Light" - giving a great bluegrass arrangement to Hank Williams' classic. There are a few novelty tunes, like "Listen to the Mockingbird" and "How Far to Little Rock?" There are some instrumentals, where Ralph really pulls out the stops on the banjo. In general, this is Ralph Stanley at the peak of his musical prowess, performing before an enthusiastic audience. If you love the Stanley sound, bluegrass music, or just music, then you need to own this album.



2. The Stanley Brothers have continued to turn out great traditional American bluegrass albums for over 50 years, and "Live In Japan" is one of their best. Live In Japan is good old fashioned Smokey Mountain Bluegrass, a mixture of standard and gospel favorites. The older Ralph Stanley gets, the better he gets. This is a must for the collection of any bluegrass lover.
