  1. Everyone knows what a great entertainer Charlie Daniels is, but not everyone knows what a great Christian man he is. I admire Charlie for sharing his God-given talent, and at the same time, sharing his devout love for Jesus Christ.

  2. I thought I had faith for the last 40 years of my life, but this CD was introduced to me in my deepest time of dispair, Thanks be to God, who stretched out the heavens, throught faith in Jesus Christ, has sent me a comforter and reveled to me wonders of his creation. This CD will bring you to your knees as Satan looses his grip and one opens their heart to the Lord of Lords, the King of Kings.

  3. I love "The Door" I have went thru 2 cassettes. I thought It was time to buy a CD. If you like Charlie, You will love this. I believe its his best. His face glows with the love of the Lord.

  4. I was raised on Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and the old hymns, but this is one of my favorite albums of all time. I love it! I get some strange looks, but I don't care. It's great! It's about as opposite as it gets from my past, and I still love that too, but get this if you don't have it. The performance is first class professional and the messages in the songs are soul stirring and soul healing.

  5. This Cd is fantastic. I love the Jerusalem Trilogy. All of my family members love the "Crucify Him" song. The Power of Prayer is another great song. This soundtrack is full of different musical styles, great lyrics, and is better than a lot of the Christian contemporary cds. I love it.

  1. Del is tops. His music, lyrics, all of his performances, really great.
The instrumental music that backs him is top notch. Highly recommended to folks who love country gospel bluegrass. Technics of the group playing their instruments is extrememly high quality.

  2. I love this new album of gospel or songs of the Lord. Again The McCoury Band has given us another great album to listen to and enjoy. Get this album you will love it.

  3. If you love bluegrass and the Lord, then this is the CD for you. Great songs which get you clappin' and lift your spirit!!!!

  4. Playing Time - 42:51

What They Do: They're on the top of the bluegrass game and play songs full of warmth and passion to celebrate the spirit of God. Del delivers each song with convincing emotion, and his lonesome highs are always piercingly clear.

Little Known Facts: This is the band's first all-gospel project, and I'm told that Del McCoury has never recorded a gospel music album in his five decade long career.

The Songs: The set draws heavily from the material of Oklahoma-born Albert E. Brumley, the most popular white gospel composer among rural southernerns in the 1930s. His songs present visions of a caring, personal Savior and of an abundant, pastoral Heaven where old acquaintances would be renewed. "I'll put on a crown and walk all around all over God's Promised Land." The album opens with Brumley's "I'm Bound For the Land of Canaan" and "It's Surprising What The Lord Can Do" has Del switching to his soaring tenor on the choruses. In fact, a number of their vocal arrangements have Del jumping up to the higher harmony on choruses. Halfway through the set, the band supercharges the music with Brumley's "Led By The Master's Hand" and the band's remarkably distinct vocals. Following that, in "It's An Unfriendly World" a beggar asks for some guidance in a world full of sorrow and sin. Other classics from Brumley include "I'll Put On A Crown and Walk Around"and the album closer "The Lord is Writing Down Names."

A beautiful duet with Ronnie and Del is is presented in the ¾-time "Gold Under My Feet," while the band's splendid quartet is illustrated in "Five Flat Rocks," that also showcases Ronnie McCoury's consummate guitar skill. A strong nod to tradition is Pete Pyle's "Don't Put Off Until Tomorrow" that kicks off with Ronnie's tremolo and downstrokes on his eight strings of fame. From Mississippi, Pete Pyle had been a soloist on the Opry who also was member of Bill Monroe's band. Del McCoury and Jerry Salley co-wrote "Ain't Nothin' Gonna Come Up Today" that suggests we fight Satan on our knees. Instrumentally, you won't find a band that is much more solid than Del's. The band's newest addition, Alan Bartram on bass, is rock solid and also contributes to some of the vocal harmonies.

The Musicians: Del sings and picks guitar with his sons Ronnie (mandolin) and Robbie (banjo), as well as with Jason Carter (fiddle) and Alan Bartram (bass)

The Bottomline: The 67-year-old Del McCoury shows no signs of slowing down. The McCoury musical magic is first pew.

  5. It's hard to believe that it took Del McCoury more than forty years to record his first all-gospel album, but THE PROMISED LAND was worth the wait. This 14-track collection is a treat for the ears as well as the soul.

The album kicks of with "I'm Bound for the Land of Canaan," one of seven songs composed by Albert E. Brumley. Best known for "I'll Fly Away" (not included here), Brumley wrote more than 800 songs during his lifetime and was selected to the Country Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Songs run the gamut from the stately "We Know Where He Is" to the bouncy "I'll Put on a Crown & Walk Around." Among the highlights are a bluesy version of "Five Flat Rocks" with stunning four-part harmony and Ronnie and Rob McCoury providing some wonderful guitar picking. "The Lord Is Writing Down Names" also showcases Ronnie's and Rob's guitar prowess.

There is not a weak track on this album. If you're a fan of traditional bluegrass and gospel music, this album will not disappoint. [Running Time - 42.55] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 comments about Cristy Lane - 20 Greatest Hits.

  1. This budget collection contains Cristy's recordings of twenty gospel songs including the song that she will be forever associated with in America, One day at a time, with which Cristy had a number one country hit. That song was a hit for different singers in different countries and for that reason, Cristy Lane may not be well known outside her homeland. (For the record, Lena Martell had a UK number one pop hit with One day at a time. It was the only UK hit single of any kind that Lena had although she placed six albums in the UK album charts.)

Despite the strength of that classic song, there is much more to Cristy's music. Cristy had some success as a country singer (six top ten hits and three others in the top twenty) but despite making some great music, she never established herself in the front rank of female country singers.

Apart from One day at a time, Cristy's country hits are all omitted from this compilation, but what you get instead are Cristy's versions of many famous gospel songs, some of which are tradtional while others are of more recent vintage, but all sound wonderful as sung by Cristy.

When I bought this CD, there wasn't a lot of choice. Cristy's music is now much better represented on CD. You can now find other compilations of her gospel music as well as her non-gospel country recordings. Some compilations pick from both. While this CD is enjoyable, I'm not necessarily sure that it's the best choice amongst what is now available, especially as the packaging is what you'd expect of a budget compilation. Maybe one day, I'll be able to expand my compilation of Cristy's music. In the meantime, I can enjoy listening to Cristy sing what she's best at - easy listening country gospel songs.

  2. I loved this CD. Christy Lane has a beautiful voice that really does justice to all the songs she sings. This is one of the nicest inspirational CDs in my collection.

  3. The product came quickly. It was exactly as advetised and met expectations. Thank You.

  4. Why in the world does someone sign up on a site and write one review of an album they have never heard by an artist they are woefully ignorant about?

This isnt really my kind of music ... [I'm much more likely to pop on some black or death metal] ... but I still have some really great childhood memories of this artists music being played by my mother. Country-ish gospel music that certainly deserves better than some 1 star review by someone that doesnt even know what they are talking about.

  5. For those who do not know who Christy Lane is, this CD is a great place to start. She is a true gospel legend. I grew up with her lovely voice. From entertaining the troops of Vietnam to filling my childhood home with her music, I am glad to find a greatest hits collection worthy of her legacy.

  1. These are all re-recording. For anyone that has not heard the originals this is probably a good album. I personally like the originals.

  2. Ms. Lynn gave me my Nana back to me as she sings the songs that my Nana would alway sing to me growing up. With Ms. Lynn and Nana both being southerners I get to feel closer to my Nana and God all at the same time and know that Nana and my Papa are waiting for me when the Roll is Called Up Yonder.

  3. This CD album brings out the best of Daniel O'Donnell. It is truly inspiring and a joy to listen to. On road trips I often play this CD continuously, sometimes for three or four hours, and my appreciation only grows.

  4. If it would not have been for Daniel recording this album of Faith,I don't think I would have made it through some tough times!!!!!

  5. Once agin it is completly different type of music that I listen to, but I find this just an excellant cd to have on. He Daniel O'Donnell has a very pleasant voice and I find his very relaxing and soothing. I can not say enough good things about this cd.
I have even told several people they just have to buy it that is so very relaing and soothing. I never tell anyone anything about music and for certain never tell friends and family what they should have in their music collection. Anyway not till I listen to this cd.

  1. I do not yet have this collection. I have many of the pieces on previous compilations but just reviewing the song list gives me goose bumps. There is a ton of great material here, the Stanley Brothers are essential to any bluegrass or folk collections. There is a song Jacob's Vision, that I had on one of those bargain bin cassettes you see in truck stops. One of the most moving songs ever recorded. Looked for it for years after the tape broke and here it is on CD. Listened to a sample of that and it is the same song I have looked for quite a while. Buy this set now, you will not regret it for a moment. Cannot vouch for the mastering quality, the booklets or any of that, but the songs are great and have been scattered over many different labels for years. Here it is in one box.

5 comments about God.

  1. I've got this album plugged into my CD on my motorcycle. Cruising with Cash and God rocks.

  2. I am not a Christian, but I still count this CD as among the best that the Man in Black ever cut. The album resonates with emotion and John's voice truly is the telling sign of how personal these tunes were for him. Also, be sure to check out the other 3 albums in the "quadrilogy:" Murder, Love, and Life.

  3. While some artists singing about God may make you raise your eyebrows in unbelief, Cash makes you raise your eyebrows in delight. With so many songs previously that dealt with spirituality, Johnny Cash goes back to his original roots with some old hymn songs and some songs that he wrote himself. Obviously, the overall theme is "God" and Cash sings with the emotion that we have all grown to love. Fans of Cash's earlier work should still love this because it's the same style, except what he is singing about has more substance.

  4. This disc collects together music handpicked by Johnny Cash to express the religious faith he grew up with that sustained him through a hard life as a cottonpicker in Arkansas, the death of his older brother at a young age in a sawmill accident, and by Cash's own account through a long battle with booze and pills. The God Cash sings about is not some casual acquaintance or marketing tool to capture a certain segment of his listening audience: it is Someone Cash knows and loves and he Wants you to love Him too. The songs here range from a 1957 track ("Belshazzar" cut while Johnny was still with Sun Records) through 1996 ("Kneeling Drunkard's Plea" on American Records).

    HIGHLIGHTS:
"Redemption" is probably the single most powerful tune here: expressing the totality of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. "Man in White" is a clever retelling of Saul's conversion on the road to Damascus. ("I was blinded so that I might see...") "Belshazzar" was one of the few gospel tracks Sam Phillips allowed Johnny to cut while at Sun and it's a good one. The trademark "boom chicka boom" guitar underscores the tale of a king "Weighed in the balance and found wanting" by a disembodied hand.

    LOWS:
"The Great Speckled Bird" is a country music/gospel standard but Johnny's version doesn't really sound heartfelt. Johnny himself in the liner notes says "At times, I'm a voice crying in the wilderness, but at times I'm right on the money and I know what I'm singing about." I'm guessing that was a "wilderness" moment.

    BOTTOM LINE:
Fans of Cash who aren't opposed to genuine emotional Christian expression will find a lot to love here. Fans of Christian music who usually listen only to touchy-feely "I'm OK..you're OK" lyrics should get a load of "Redemption" for another take on what the gospel really means. Gospel means good news..and Cash loved to spread it via song. This anthology demonstrates that love. The best gospel song Cash ever did, though ("The Man Comes Around"), doesn't appear here because this compilation was assembled before its release. For that reason, after getting this one you'll need to get AMERICAN IV: THE MAN COMES AROUND as well for a spine-tingling account of the Apocalypse to come.

  5. This is a collection of religious songs by Johnny Cash, personally selected by Cash himself. The earliest song is from 1957 (one of the few religious songs he was allowed to record for Sun Records) and the most recent song is from 1996 (his second American Recordings album). This is good music that should appeal to Johnny Cash's fans, especially his Christian fans. You can tell his religious convictions are heartfelt when you hear him sing these songs. Recommended to Johnny Cash fans.
