  1. this was purchased for a gift for my father. he requested a specific song by the group and your company made it easy for me to track down the right cd. he was so excited to be able to hear this music again. thank you for making his (and my) holiday special this year.

  2. This album is the BEST! I love to hear the couple that have been married for 50 years sing. Vestal is the greatest. She is my favorite gospel singer. If you don't have this album, make sure you get it soon! Love ya Vestal!!!!

  3. Vestal and Howard Goodman. These names ring a bell to those of us who grew up listening to the Happy Goodmans. These 2 people are SO special. All of the songs on this cd I know are special to them. I feel I have known Vestal all my life. The song Friends is really special to me in such a way that-it reminds me that-we all have at least one earthly very special friend. But, we also have a Heavenly Father who wants to be our friend also. My favorite words in this song are,"..you just love me, and you pray for me-thats a friend." That IS a friend. God is our friend. We know that. And even with all the troubles this life may bring, one thing two special people said has always kept me going,"Lord, I wouldn't take nothin' for my journey now!"

  1. If you were introduced to this band by Rounder's "Handpicked" comp's inclusion of "every humble knee", don't even waste your time with the rest of this album. Some of the songs on here are just OK and some just downright boring. The instrumental work is decent but nothing on the album makes up for the painful repititousness of "Goodnight, the Lord is coming" and "Drifting Away" or the draggingly dull a capello, "To Be His Child". If your looking for some bluegrass gospel with soul, check out Ralph Stanely's "While the Ages Roll On" or, "Answer The Call".

  2. This is Bluegrass at its best! Being rather new to BG, I wasn't familiar with the NBB until I heard "Every Humble Knee" on a compilation album. Fell in love with their sound, and had to get this album.

I did not think anything could possibly surpass "Every Humble Knee" but now I'm not so sure. I honestly can't pick a favorite cut from this album - it's all pure gold. But high on my list are "You're Drifting Away," "To Be His Child," "Are You Afraid to Die," and "New Born Soul." And of course, "Every Humble Knee."

The thing is, their vocal work is as stellar as their instrumental work. And these guys aren't afraid to lay down their instruments and let their voices shine on a capella stuff---especially "New Born Soul" and "To Be His Child." But when they DO play, Compton rules on the mandolin, as far as I'm concerned! And Stuart Duncan has the sweetest fiddle tone I've ever heard. But the vocal harmonies are what make this such a splendid albumn. This is a remarkable blending of great material (every song here's a winner), fantastic playing, and superb singing. My only complaint is that the album's too short. Only one cut is 3 minutes or longer, and there are just 12 songs.

Buy this album. Relish in it. You'll be glad you did.

  3. I, too, have played this casette over and over again. You don't have to live in Tennessee to appreciate this music. Light and uplifting, a pleasure for the soul.

  4. This is one of the best bluegrass gospel CD's available today. I have seen this group perform live and this album is the next best thing. These guys are the original band members and thus should make it even more of a collectors item.

  5. These guys also do a great number with the Fairfield Four

  1. Finally someone tries to offer hymns that are new to CD. Unfortunately, it suffers the tragic flaw of only having a small collection. This album is worth the buy for two reasons. Many of these songs are not located on the Gaither Collection. Secondly, the liner notes are written by the same man who wrote them Ernie's last album for Capitol, For the 83rd time. The notes provide a useful insight into the life and times, as well as the man itself.

  2. When the worst thing I can say about this CD is that it only has ten tracks, that is a good thing. On this CD, Tennessee Ernie Ford sings some of the most beautiful hymns ever written, and he does so as well as I have ever heard. For the person who loves these songs, the versions by Ford are absolutely not to be missed.

  1. Do you love Bluegrass? Then this Cd has to be in your collection! It won't be complete without it!

  2. I still remember the first time I heard Front Range's song: One Beautiful Day...I was in my car and had turned on the radio. I heard the chorus with its beautiful harmonies and its haunting message. I could not get the song out of my mind. We have since sung it at several peace rallies in our town.

I saw the group perform live...so talented and charismatic. I wish they were still touring. This CD has several excellent songs on it, but the title cut is enough to make the purchase worthwhile.

  3. This music sounds like the photo on the cover. Absolutely beautiful.

5 comments about When I Stop Dreaming: The Best of the Louvin Brothers.

  1. Wow.....I had forgotton just how good the Louvin brothers really were. This is a very well produced CD, one that will be due many replays and will bring back many memories. The harmony is so good and the old songs are very nostalgic. Anyone that enjoys old style, two part harmoney will enjoy this work. Highly Recommended.

  2. I saw Charlie Louvin in concert recently in San Diego. Very few in the crowd had heard him live before but all knew his reputation. He did not disapoint and made a room full of new hardcore fans. He and his late brother recorded some wonderful songs that will be evergreen much like the work of Hank Williams. When you look back at the great Brothers acts like the Stanleys, Jim and Jesse and the Delmore Brothers you know the Louvin Brothers belong on top of that elite group. Their harmony work was the best. You won't hear this great stuff on the radio anymore as Nashville has long ago turned it's back on it's roots. You gotta go dig up the really good stuff by yourself. This record is a good place to start.

  3. This is a must own CD for lovers of traditional and blue grass influenced country music. The tight harmonies, beautiful melodies, and poignant stories are a real treat to listen to and enjoy.

You won't hear better country than "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", "You're Running Wild", "My Baby's Gone", and the title song, "When I Stop Dreaming".

  4. Like all great musicians--whatever the music--the Louvin Brothers had a sound all their own: often imitated, never equalled. A basic album for listeners who love country and want a fuller sense of where it all began.

  5. I read the book, "Country Conversations" by Timothy Edward Jones initially for his interview with John McCrea of Cake, who happens to be a big fan of the the Louvin Brothers since childhood. Indeed, he got Charlie Louvin to play all 16 dates on Cake's 2003 Unlimited Sunshine Tour along with Cheap Trick, the Detroit Cobras, and the Hackensaw Boys who was the backing band for Charlie Louvin.
In the 2 pg. interview with McCrea, he stated his favorite Louvin songs were "You're Learning" (an Every Brothers sound-alike) and "the Great Atomic Power", the better of the two and both on this album. Definitely a good primer of the Louvin's music!
ps--As much McCrea in that interview stated that "Louvin Brothers' covers make me nauseous," "The Great Atomic Power" deserves a makeover (a faster tempo & a fuller musical accompaniment sung by a female duo; myself as one of that duo)--
John McCrea, you have been warned!

1 comments about Gospel Soul.

  1. The Swan Silvertones hit it big with the VeeJay Record label in the late 50s and early 60s. Before that, they recorded for Specialty, and thankfully, Fantasy (who now owns the rights to these tunes) has released the bulk of the Specialty Silvertones' work on CD over the past few years. But the group's recording career began with King Records in the mid- to late-40s, and this chintzy 8-track collection is the only available CD from this period. The Silvertones recorded close to 50 tunes during their stint with King, so there was plenty of material to choose from. Sadly, we're left with a CD that runs less than 30 minutes.

The Silvertones recordings on King mark the group's transition from an older jubilee-style sound to the hard gospel shouting that became all the craze in the 50s. In fact, along with the Soul Stirrers and a handful of other terrific groups, the Silvertones lead the way in the evolution of the gospel quartet sound. Don't get me wrong -- these eight tunes are great, and the sound quality is fine. But only eight songs, outdated photos, and NO liner notes is ... pathetic.

3 comments about Sacred Voices: An A Capella Gospel Collection.

  1. There's not a dud in this collection of a capella gospel songs. The music is straight from the heart.

  2. This is wonderful music. I have sent this CD as a gift to a number of friends. I wish there were more like this!

  3. I found this sample of songs truly heart warming. There are lots of gospel music artists today who sing just the songs. This music has the "Power of God" behind it. I haven't heard singing like this since I was a child. We would go to different churches on Saturday nights for just singing services and you would hear some wonderful spirit-filled singing. This CD has the same type of singing; filled with the "Holy Spirit". Thank you Amazon.com for emailing me on this special sale.
