  1. Alan Jackson was definitely inspired when he performed Precious Memories. Our family plays it as a background for our home during quiet times, devotions, and reading. Love it so much we bought more copies for friends.

  2. This is another 5 star by Alan., Finally a whole CD of gospel songs by my favorite. Purchase it by all means.

  3. This is the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
The CD is in perfect condition and was received earlier then expected.

  4. This is a great CD if you're over 45. Good old time Church music. Alan is the greatest. I like to listen to this when I'm angry or tense. It's very soothing.

  5. Love this CD...lots of original songs...bought if for my parents and one for me too.

5 comments about The Legend of Johnny Cash.

  1. This Cd is a compliation of Johnny Cash's history in music, from start to finish. Although not a complete anthology of his music, it includes most of his major hits including those with "The Highwaymen" and best of all, his last hit "Hurt". This is a must-have for any Cash fan or for anyone who wants a collector's edition of his music. I rate this CD "very good".

  2. My husband and I really enjoy this CD. I actually just became a fan of Johnny Cash after seeing Walk the Line.

  3. Classic Johnny with all his best songs.Reminds me of growing up and all the great country music we used to listen to on weekends!

  4. This one's got it all practically. Great stuff. Cash's "Man in Black" anthem. Funny ditty-type songs like "One Piece at a Time," "Boy Named Sue," and "Jackson." My two favorites are "Highwayman" and "The Wanderer."
These two tracks are appropriately located right next one another on the disc. "The Wanderer" (done with U2) is a meditation on the one body/one soul search for rest/love/G-d. "Highwayman," done with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, is about one soul in many bodies (an Old West robber, a sailor, a dam-builder, and an astronaut) i.e. reincarnation and the eternity of the soul. So soon after Cash's passing I wonder what his next incarnation might be.
Speaking of Kristofferson, he penned "Sunday Morning Coming Down" (and Cash sings it like no one else). That song alone is reason enough to buy this disc.

  5. Johnny Cash's music and popularity has transcended generations and genres. His fans consist of people like myself who don't care much for the current crop of country artists that Nashville is promoting, younger fans who were introduced to his music through excellent covers of Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails tunes and longtime country fans. With a career that lasted as long as his it's hard to narrow his material down to one CD but this collection does a good job. You get his early stuff with the Tennessee Two ("Cry, Cry, Cry", "Folsum Prison Blues", "Get Rhythm") his middle era ("Man In Black","Sunday Morning Coming Down", "A Boy Named Sue")and his amazing comeback on the Rick Rubin "American Recordings" ("Rusty Cage", "Hurt"(dare I say this is better than the NIN version), "Delia's Gone"). All in all an excellent overview of a legendary career.

  1. The product ordered arrived in a timely manner and is exactly what my Mother wanted.

  2. This is a very revealing picture of Elvis Presley. If you ever wonder if he's a Christian, I think the sincerity of the words show his true feelings. I recommend this CD!

  3. My wife asked for this and when she got it she loved it!

  5. I really like this CD. However, there are quite a few songs on here I've never heard of, and I generally like to hear Elvis sing by himself. There are alot of back-up singers on this CD and they get alot of song time. But, nobody sings "how great thow art" and "peace in the valley" like Elvis. I would have like to have had "in the garden" included on this CD as well.

  1. Singing Gospel Music. It's what Elvis loved the most, and what he did better than any mortal who ever lived on this earth. This incredible 3 CD set has every Gospel song ever done by the King - The 1 EP, three LPs, live performances, rehearsals, jam sessions. No one could do Gospel Music better than Mr. Presley & of all the various genres (rock, country, ballads, blues, etc.) Gospel was what he loved the best. I could listen to this music around the clock & it would never get old. Whether atheist or Bible Believer - YOU NEED THIS MUSIC - you'll never be the same. Thank you Elvis!!

  2. I'm a huge Elvis fan and I love his gospel songs. He sings them so beautifully and they are so uplifting. This box set is a worthy addition to any Elvis fans collection. I like that there are also some live songs and some outtakes in this box set.

  3. This is a wonderfully inspiring three disc collection of recordings by a person I feel puts his heart and soul into his gospel songs. How grand to hear the King of Rock pay homage to his Lord, the source of his "one of a kind" vocal talent. The impromptu recordings, including one where Elvis sings bass, I find especially enjoyable and touching. A few of the songs are done more than once but there are some that should be done more than once. This collection may not include all the gospel songs Elvis ever did but it a large uplifting, moving collection and well worth the price.

  4. I purchased this for a friend that loves everything Elvis. I am not an Elvis fan but do enjoy gospel. I agreed to listen with him and was very much surprised. This is better than anything else Elvis ever did. Enjoy.

  5. These cd's was what i was looking for, as an african american looking for old sprituals that i had grew up with. It surprise me to be Elvis singing most of them. I like it.

5 comments about Dailey and Vincent.

  1. Wow! I knew this was going to be a good recording. NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL. I've kept up with Mr. Dailey all the years he was with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver and he learned from what in my opinion is the master of harmony and instrumental excellence. I look forward to many years of Dailey and Vincent and wish them well in all their endeavors. Thanks guys for an excellent CD.

  2. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent, both veterans of years working with big-name bluegrass bands, have now teamed up to form a band of their own and have recently released their first album, the self-titled Dailey & Vincent. Dailey is best known for the nine years he spent with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the band he left in August 2007. Vincent, brother of Rhonda Vincent, got his start performing with his family's band, The Sally Mountain Show, and has worked with the biggest names in bluegrass and country music in recent years.

If Dailey & Vincent is any indication, these guys have a very bright future in bluegrass music. What makes this album, a mix of traditional bluegrass and gospel music with a little country thrown in for good measure, special are the harmonies featured in most of the songs. Jamie Dailey has one of the purest (and highest) high tenor voices in the business and Darrin Vincent's voice offers the perfect blend needed to create some memorable vocals.

Among the album's strongest cuts are five gospel tunes, including an acappella performance of "Don't You Want to Go to Heaven When You Die," sung in four-part harmony and guaranteed to make you hold your breath as the lyrics seem to come faster and faster and get you wondering when the singers are going to run out of breath themselves. "By the Mark," a song that should be part of every Dailey & Vincent performance if it's not, gives Jamie Dailey the chance to demonstrate that superb high tenor of his and is sure to be an album favorite.

The traditional bluegrass sound is well represented by standout songs such as "Cumberland River," "Poor Boy Workin' Blues" and my favorite, "Don't You Call My Name."

This is a first class album debut but that should not be surprising considering the decades of musical experience that Dailey and Vincent already have under their belts. The guys have surrounded themselves with some fine musicians and promise to be just as good on stage as they are on this recording.

  3. This CD lives up to all expectations. The vocals are highly inventive and very satisfying. Gives me goose bumps!

  4. I just heard this band in Hollywood, Maryland. I've been listening to bluegrass for over 30 years, and thought I heard it all. These guys take it to a new level. Their live performance absolutely blew me away. From the first note all the way through. They are non stop. One song after another. Although the album is very good, unfortunately a lot of their live stuff isn't on the album and the album doesn't quite capture the strong energy and the incredible harmony's these guys project. Still there are a few songs; Poor Boy Working blues, and Sweet Carrie that give a glimpse into what they are like live, and On the Mark gives a sense of their harmonies. I rate the album 4 stars, but only because I saw how great they are live, otherwise I'd have given it higher. The album also tends to be more gospelly than their live show. I'll be trying to catch them live again this year, which is a rarity for me. Our group even had people that didn't like bluegrass with us, and they were blown away. The band is touring the East now and may be playing near you. I think they have a website with their tour dates/venues.

  5. I have just gotten through watching both these young men perform at the Argyle Tx Bluegrass Festival. These young men knocked the socks off of the crowd. What wonderful harmony and soul they project. They sang many of the songs that is on this CD and if it can get any better, I don't where to go. What a duo. Riley Chandler, Garland, TX

  1. This CD was very disappointing. I was hoping for something I could sing along with and this was not it!

  2. I love this CD. It has the best country gospel sound of any I have.
Great to get you moving in the kitchen or to sit and listen to in silence.
Reminds me of the music from "Cowboy Church" in Nashville. Works for me.

  3. The songs on the disc are as advertised, but the sound quality was extremely poor, no, not poor, but bad.

  4. I have enjoyed listening to these familiar songs that are sung in churches every Sunday, including my own. All in all, it is a good album.

  5. A great buy! Wonderful songs of worship sung by various country artists. Very enjoyable to listen to....

5 comments about Cash: Ultimate Gospel.

  1. Excellent CD. The old traditional hymns really hit home. Definitely worth listening to such inspiring music. It is unfortunate that the old time hymns have been forgotten, and so this recording by Johnny Cash reminds one that there was once good Christian oriented music. By contrast, the new contemporary Christian music panders to modern "pop culture" and sounds is if it was sung by some washed up Vegas lounge lizard.

  2. It's almost unbelievable that these tracks were recorded over a timespan of 34 years, from 1957 to 1981, since the music forms such a cohesive, seamless whole. The songs include traditionals, his own compositions and the work of others like Carl Perkins. The album opens with Here Was A Man, a spoken introduction about the life and influence of Messiah Yeshua.

The next, The Preacher Said, is a type of duet with statements by evangelist Billy Graham. The following seven songs all date from the late 1950s, and my personal favorites include Belshazzar (1957), It Was Jesus with its unidentified black gospel backing vocals, Swing Low Sweet Chariot (1959) and The Great Speckle Bird from the same year.

Two of the previously unreleased tracks, How Great Thou Art and It Is No Secret from 1981, are amongst the highlights. The legendary Carter Family provide backing vocals on amongst others: Peace In The Valley (1963), Angel Band (1979) and on Children Go Where I Send Thee (1979) together with the 21st Century Singers, whilst Far Side Banks Of Jordan is a duet with June Carter.

Other great hymns worthy of special mention are In The Sweet By And By and Amazing Grace (both 1974) and Were You There (1962) with Maybelle Carter on autoharp and the family on backing vocals. The full spectrum of the spiritual experience is covered by these beautiful, timeless songs: sombre reflection, joy, melancholy, awe, comfort, devotion and gripping story-telling.

This is my first album of the music of Johnny Cash and I'm hooked! His beautiful baritone is impressive on its own, but even more amazing when framed by the devotional backing vocals. The CD booklet contains one sepia and four black and white pics, information like recording dates and musicians for every song, plus a short bio written by Sylvie Simmons.

  3. Johnny Cash passed away on September 12, 2003. If you were to judge exclusively by the number of CD's that suddenly became available in the wake of his death, his legendary status as a hero of both rock and roll and country music grew instantly and exponentially. This huge amount of posthumous releases usually dedicated themselves to portraying multiple aspects of Cash's monumental talent, as filtered through his even more remarkable persona. The fact is that there were so many releases that it overwhelmed much of his audience. Cash has always suffered (or celebrated) an incredible number of compilations and collections (allmusic.com features a list that contains over 300 entries for compilations alone!), so it becomes nearly impossible to sift through all of this to determine what is essential and what is peripheral, redundant or extravagant.
For all of the above reasons, I fear that "Ultimate Gospel" may fall through the cracks and be overlooked, and that would be a shame. It is a plainspoken title for a beautiful, plainspoken concept album that handpicks Gospel favorites from nearly three decades of Cash's career. Before he sang rock and roll or country music, Cash considered himself a Gospel singer. In fact, he `failed' his first audition for Sun Records by relying exclusively on Gospel songs. Despite this rather inauspicious beginning, Cash has often returned to his roots as a Gospel singer, and some of his most heartfelt performances fall into this category. He revisited some of these selections on the (also posthumous) collection entitled "My Mother's Hymnbook," but while that collection features stark arrangements with nothing but Cash's guitar for accompaniment, these versions are considerably more elaborate, sometimes including lush instrumental accompaniment and a backing chorus. Some of the best selections here ("I Was There When It Happened" and "Belshazzar") date back to the 1950s, when he was still in Memphis and perceived as a rockabilly artist, while the latter-day selections from the mid-seventies capture an artist remaining true to himself in spite of commercial trends ("In the Sweet By and By" and "Amazing Grace").
In the tidal wave of Johnny Cash collections that are flooding the market, it would be easy to dismiss this as something less than essential, but I'm certain that Johnny Cash himself would consider this to be some of his best work. If you are interested in Cash's Gospel side and wish to buy only one collection, I strongly recommend that you choose "Ultimate Gospel." A Tom Ryan

  4. HAVING BEEN A BIG FAN OF CASH EVERY SINCE I WAS YOUNG, I WATCHED HIM GROW AND MATURE OVER THE YEARS. AFTER HE MET AND MARRIED JUNE CARTER, HE RETURNED TO HIS SPIRITUAL ROOTS. THIS IS A GREAT COLLECTION OF SONGS FOR THOSE OF US WHO ENJOY AN EXPOSURE TO CASH'S SPIRITUAL LIFE AND HERITAGE. THERE WAS A LOT MORE TO JOHNNY CASH THAN MOST PEOPLE REALIZE BECAUSE JOHNNY WAS A TRUE BELIEVER AND HE ESPOUSED VALUES LATER IN LIFE THAT MADE HIM ONE OF US, A FELLOW CHRISTIAN AND A SPOKESMAN FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD. i RECOMMEND THIS COLLECTION AND ANY OTHER RECORDINGS THAT REFLECT CASH'S SPIRITUAL JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE.

  5. If you like Johnny Cash and care anything about gospel music this is a MUST buy. Some of the classics were recorded many years ago without the accoustics available today but that just adds to the listening enjoyment.

5 comments about How Great Thou Art: Gospel Favorites Live from the Grand Ole Opry.

  1. This is a wonderful compilation of gospel songs. They are definitely old favorites and I am so glad they were finally put together with some wonderful singers on one CD! Brings back a lot of memories for me.

  2. hymns by grand ole opry members, what better music could you asked for? All perfomrmances were fantasic, especially Dierks Bentley's

  3. I like most of this CD. As could be expected, since it's from the Grand Ole Opry, some of the songs lean toward bluegrass and some are a little more hardcore country. Vince Gill and Carrie Underwood are the standouts. I also recommend the How Great Thou Art CD by the Gaithers. Amazon accidentally sent that to me on my first order, but when I saw it, I decided to keep it and reorder this one. They are both worth having.

  4. I did not get to enjoy this as it was a gift for a friend but she
    liked it very much.

  5. Trace Adkins track is fantastic as always and the other male singers do well, however, the female singers didn't sound that great.

  1. He had something that alot of musicians lack today, heart. All of his songs reflect a journey filled with pain and sorrow and looking for hope. But, he knew his need for God. A great, great collection for the price.

  2. I think that it is a great compilation. I would have enjoyed more of his later works, including some rare covers, but otherwise every recording was wonderful. This was a gift for my father & he thoroughly enjoyed it.

  3. I bought this for my husband, who is a big Johnny Cash fan. He loves it. It is a must for any JC fan, as it is a great collection of his most famous songs.

  4. I play this set over and over on my ipod. I love it. Do not hesitate.

  5. With over 100 songs this collection has it all. The way they are segregated isn't necessarily how I would like to listen to his music so if you have a shuttle feature in your multi deck that may be better. I, personally, intend to cut a 'best of' disk for my own use.

5 comments about Appalachian Stomp: Bluegrass Classics.

  1. Not Great sound quality, Look for a CD by a group called "Shades of Grass" if you like great Bluegrass music.

  2. Best introduction to Traditional Bluegrass that I have seen.

It has probably the best known songs in bluegrass. If you listen to bluegrass at all, you will probably know some of them. But this is only a stepping stone. From here you can move on to albums by the invidual artists as well as others like "The Seldom Scene". Or possibly "new grass" like "Hayseed Dixie" They do some interesting covers of AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd and other groups.

  3. This is the definitive one-stop choice for a package of all-time classic bluegrass hits in their original forms, and at a bargain price to boot. I enjoy the fact that the collection takes a long view, running from the oldest bluegrass tunes from Bill Monroe, originator of the genre, to a modern practitioner like Alison Krauss. Don't fail to read the liner notes, they're very informative and well-written.

  4. 3 stars may be unfair b/c I may be prejudised in that I'm not a fan of stomp afterall (apparently). I love all types of music, including bluegrass and the twangiest of twang...but this seemed a bit repetitive to me. If you're a stomp fan, I'm sure you'll love this...if you're dabbling, might want to get your feet wet somewhere else.

  5. Great CD with top bluegrass artists and great soundtrack. Definitely worth buying.
