  1. Excellent! He's truly under the radar in the industry. Great lyrics and very sensual. I never tire of hearing the cd. It's like the first time every time.

  2. I have been listening to this CD nonstop since getting it five hours. I becamse a DeBarge fan while in middle school in the mid 80's when they came on the scene. Recently, I have been getting some old collections of their stuff to put on a new mp4 player (Meizu M6 SL) I have, but I never did have any of El's solo work. I have even been checking out some old Youtube videos and catching up on recent DeBarge news. Their mother has an excellent website about this family and has recently writen a book about the family.

I have always liked El's rendition of Marvin Gaye's After the Dance with Fourplay so decided to buy his In The Storm CD, which some said was pretty much to a tribute to Gaye. There are only about 2 songs on it that I like.. maybe another 2 that are tolerable. Too much funk for me.

I decided to give Hear, Mind and Soul a try after reading the reviews here and listening to the samples. Well I was in my car during the first listen of this CD. The first song.. Where You are is a mid tempo joint that had me snapping my fingers and saying, That is the *&^%! Nice way to start a CD. Next song, Can't Get Enough... mid-level slow jam... nice song give it a 9/10. Next song.. old school slow jam.. with Babyface... I give it a 7 for no other reason that, with these two, I wanted to hear more verses.. instead of the going back and forth with the chorus. They do compliment eachother well, but I could have used a little less Babyface.

Ok.. so now I am on song 4... You Got The Love.. another.. old school slow jam. A 10! So now I am at the 5th song and as far as I am concerned, the CD is already a hit because in my lifetime, I have purchased only one other CD whose first 4 songs were hits with me. Most are lucky if they get that in an entire CD!

Waited for the let down. None came! I mean the closest it comes to letting me down is with .. It's Got to be Real and Slide because I do not like the first part of the songs, but by the middle.. I was there nodding my head again and feeling both astounded and sad. Astounded that this is such a great CD.. and sad because in addition to El's and his family's drug and legal problems, here is another Black male talent that does not get recognition; overshadowed by the bling and booty noise movement in music. Yet, so many people sample his music. It is funny to be playing some of his music and have a young'n become interested in it because they think he has sampled someone like Ahante!

The production values on the last three songs will remind many listeners of Marvin Gaye's music. By the way, if you are a Marvin Gaye fan, check out Christion's Ghetto Cyrano. It is the CD to which I made reference earlier! It certainly is the mordern day Inner City Blues! Another talent and CD that has been slept on, but should have been platinum.

There is not one bad song on Heart, Mind, & Soul. Songs are from slow jam to mid/slightly up-tempo jams that will make you wish you were back at the roller rink putting down your smooth moves.. going backwards..of course. Some of them bring back that feeling evoked by Tevin's Campbell's I'm Ready, which for some reason has always been a hit with 35 adults although he was just a teen when he made it.

El ends the CD with a beautiful spiritual song. Don't worry.. it is not preachy, just lovely and could easily have been a love song. Production on this CD is near perfection! Actually one of the things that stands out for me is El's background vocals. And speaking of background voclas, most of them are done by El or former members of DeBarge. El (co)-wrote/produced most of the songs. His brothers and he also play instruments on many. Stevie Wonder plays the harmonica on the first song, Where You Are.

If there could be an improvement on this, it would be that El did not sing in falsetto so often. You Are My Dream, I think, would have been better off without so much falsetto, although it is his strongest demonstration of his range using it. Starlight, Moonlight, Candelight is one song that gets better as the song goes on.. and I love everything about it except that chorus.. also it seems to end quite suddenly!

Basically.. you only need two things to know you should buy this CD.
    1. You enjoy El's or similar voices... (Gaye, Maxwell...)
    2. You enjoy R & B. NOTE I said R & B.. not Hip Hop!

You answer yes to both of these and you have no reason not to have this CD in your collection.

It would be great if El and Chante Moore could collaborate again or El and Maxwell could get together and do some new music.

Simply a beautifyl CD.. a beauitful voice. I only hope he gets things right in his life and can get back in ths studio again.. and that people actually honor this talent by buying his music!

  3. One of the most underrated R&B talents -Eldra show nuff knows how to sing a ballad but he can get you up on ya feet too. Songs such as "Slide" and "Can't Get Enough" lets you know Eldra hasn't forgotten his Midwestern Steppin roots. Rounding it all out is the soulful spiritual titled song "Heart, Mind & Soul" this Cd is a must have.

  4. What can I say...I recommend this album. This album has some of the best songs ever written. This man is absolutely talented. "Got to be Real" is perfect. El DeBarge outdid himself!

  5. One of the Best Albums that I Heard from 1994.El Debarge teamed up with Babyface&what a team they made?"Where you are" with Stevie Wonder on Harmonica was tight.El brought the Pain again on vocals.Jermaine Dupri Produced "Slide" which worked."I'll Be There" has a strong resemblence to a Spinners cut easily.El hasn't had a Offical Album released since but has done alot of session work with DJ Quik,Quincy Jones amongest others. He has been Sampled&Looped to death from BlackStreet,2Pac,Mary J.Bliege,Biggie,Ashanti,etc...El Debarge is the real deal with Hsi Talent.this Album worked really well.some of the Best Production that Babyface has ever been associated with.

  1. got it for xmas and its ok bluesy van raw and unplugged sorry jay z v to the van m to the morrison punk boy

  2. I wasn't expecting much from Van Morrison doing covers of showtunes and standards from the 1940s and 1950s. It just goes to show though that one never knows an artist's real range until he or she starts exploring it. Although this is as different from the rest of his work as can be imagined, it is all superb. Additionally, these are are very unique renditions of songs I have on other discs by other artists and there is NO overlap. I'm not familiar with Georgie Fame but it is too bad that he and Van Morrsion only did this one work together. What a terrific combination they are. The title tune is worth the price of admission alone. This is a live recording too and I've noticed Van Morrison does particularly well when performing live as opposed to in the studio. Many musical artists do their best work live and perhaps it is the sheer exhiliration and joy of performance that they really need to bring out their best.

  3. This CD featuring Van Morrison and Georgie Fame is a real treat. The arrangements are sharp and the piano and horn solos really captivate the soul. Van really mines many cover tunes from the thirties, forties, and fifities but contributes a few original reworkings. Sack Of Woe, Blues In The Night, and Your Mind Is On Vacation stand out for me but truthfully this CD is great from start to finish. Buy it now.

  4. Although I've never really followed the music of either Van Morrison or Georgie Fame, Ive always respected their talents. Since I was in to some of the swing music that was going on at the time, I decided to give this a listen. And I really enjoyed it. I especially like the upbeat faster tunes on here like "Sack O" Wee, "The New Symphony Sid", and "All Saints Day" which reminds a little of the song Choo Choo Cha Boogie. It's on these songs that Morrison and Fame are at their best singing in unison with each other. All of this recorded LIVE in London with no overdubs, just that great spontanious jazzy sound by a couple heavyweight talents having some fun. So if there's any swingcats left over out there, I suggest you pick this album up. It won't disappoint.

  5. If Van Morrison's timid and mostly tuneless back-catalogue doesn't appeal to you, you may still love this happy-go-lucky effort. Track 10, "All Saints Day", is the best feel-good song I've got in my whole music collection. The rest of the album contains a host of jazzy gems, most notably the title track which breathes life and soul into one of Gershwin's less well-known compositions. Buy it!

5 comments about The Best of Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth.

  1. I heard an interview with Tracy Nelson on NPR, with short excerpts from some of her songs included. I'd never heard of her, but loved her voice, so I located her on the internet and ordered three of her CDs. I love them! Her low, mellow voice is perfect when she sings the blues, and just as good when she does country!

I guess I was too busy raising a family to pay attention to Tracy Nelson or her group, Mother Earth, way back then. But I sure enjoy her now!

  2. Way back in 1967 I was turned on to the first track "Down So Low", and it has remained in my head all these years.

Now that I have the albumn, I realize there are at least a few songs that have received some attention, with which others may be familiar, even though "Down So Low" was not ever a mainstream hit.

I highly recommend this albumn for anyone who knows (and feels the desire to wallow, from time to time, in) the blues set to music by this accomplished singer and pianist.

  3. When this "best of" album came out on CD in the mid-90s, my first reaction was "Hallelujah! Finally, some of this classic Mother Earth material on CD." It seemed like a mini-miracle, and considering that there had been NO Tracy Nelson/Mother Earth material on CD at all up til then (and that some more current solo stuff had only just started surfacing on the independent Rounder label), it seemed like a something of a godsend.

But then a shadow of a doubt set in. Did this mean that this Tracy-oriented CD would be the sole Mother Earth stuff that would ever make it to CD format. Was there no hope that group efforts (featuring the whole array of singers--Powell St. John, Rev. Gary Stallings, even humble ole Bob Arthur) would never see the light of day on CD?

Tracy Nelson was ALWAYS the vocal star of Mother Earth, BUT St. John's delightfully quirky songs and low-key vocals were also highlights of the band's two initial (and grossly under-recognized) albums LIVING WITH THE ANIMALS and MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE. That second album was also spiced up by Rev. Stallings soulful contributions. Like Big Brother, Jefferson Airplane and other hippie bands, there was a communal spirit to those early albums, which actually enhanced (and never detracted) from the recognition of the outsized talent of their women singers.

But you know, time has a way of bringing out all good things (or at least bringing out all good things on CD). If Warners themselves saw no percentage in releasing the greater part of the Mother Earth catalogue, at least a decade or so after the release of this collection, they agreed to license the original material to an independent label based in my own stomping grounds of Upsate NY. Wounded Bird records has released the entire catalogue of Tracy Nelson/Mother Earth albums that had appeared on both Mercury and Warners.

So now you have a choice. I can't say what's right for any individual listener, but I am such a huge fan of this remarkable (and undeservedly obscure) singer that I would have to say that if you can even begin to afford it, you will benefit most from buying the original, group efforts. They will give you a much better feel for what this band was all about.

However, THE BEST OF TN/ME is still a solid overview and a great introduction to Tracy's early classic work. I can't argue in theory with an "all Tracy" format, since before the CD was released, I had made my own personal "best of" tapes myself--and the selections mirrored the songs included here to an astonishing degree.

I did always have one major quibble with this set, however. It has always seemed ALL WRONG to me open the album with Tracy's classic (some would say "signature") song, "Down So Low." I have seen Tracy perform live dozens of times, and never once did she open with that song. It's one you want to save a bit, and spring on the listener (live or on record) after having won 'em over with equally powerful--but not quite so emotionally devastating--fare. On the original LIVING WITH THE ANIMALS album, it closed side one, and that seemed to be a perfect spot for it. Back in the vinyl days, you had something of a breather between this astonishing track and the next song (or if you were an album "stacker" between it and somebody else's record). If you had any kind of soul at all, believe me, you needed that break.

Here "DSL" seems almost overly hasty, like the producers are too eager to convince the listener of Tracy's greatness. Now there's not a bad track on the record, and there are many astonishing moments that, to my mind, equal that of "Down So Low." But pacing is everything, and even in this age of short attention spans and random select programming on DVDs, I would STILL want to start this record on a more subdued, less torchy note.

I don't actually envy the producers of this album the task of having to narrow down Tracy Nelson's early catalogue into even a tentative "best of" roster. To me, it's inexplicable that they left off two of the band's fourth albums most rousing number, the gospel flavored "Deliver Me" and "Bring Me Home" (heck that latter selection was the TITLE track), but something had to be left out.

All the more reason, though, to use this record as an introduction to the early works of a truly great singer, but to hasten to invest in the full catalogue as soon as you can thereafter. (You can then pass on the "best of" package to a deserving friend or donate it to your local library). You can scarcely go wrong with any of the available product. She's that good.

  4. I don't know about the group Mother Earth and have never heard them. I heard Tracy Nelson sing the song "Mother Earth" on my local public radio, loved it and wanted to learn more about the song and the artist. So I took a chance and ordered this CD--WOW! There are few female vocalists I like who have the chops and soul and "guts" to put out an album where I like the whole thing instead of just a song or two. This has 17 tracks, quite amazing in itself, and almost all of them are deeply moving, original and very soulful renditions. Get this album if you like thoughtful, well crafted blues, you just can't go wrong with this collection and Tracy's voice. Classic, classic, classic.

  5. Love the CD. Just want to know if anyone else has trouble playing it on his/her computer. I've begged and borrowed 3 different copies, and I've had trouble with all 3. Don't want to buy it if I can't play it on my computer. Comments/ideas?

  1. The sounds on this self-titled CD (Po'Girl) by the Vancouver duo conjure up images of steamy, sexy, hot vacation filled interludes surrounded with daiquiris and hammocks. A wonderful collaboration between Trish Klein (of the Be Good Tanyas) and Allison Russell, Po' Girl is wealthy in vocal talent, and lightened by the harmonica, fiddle and banjo.
I am out to buy, "Home to you," and "Vagabond Lullabies."

  2. This is not your run-of-the mill, mass market junk. This is real music made by real musicians. The sound is so old but so new. If this is the future of folk, then the future is looking good.

  3. As a rubbish Brit with no knowledge of the Be Good Tanyas, I heard one song of Po' Girl's second album at a friend's house and was hooked. I instantly bought the album, and have recently bought the 1st album, which I find deeper, and more bluesy... The instrumentals are not easy, they are simple for a reason. The words, the tone, the timbre and the organic, live feel to the music makes this one of my favourite CDs, reminiscing to times in Canada. Listen to the words. You'll hear them ;)

  4. If you are a be good tonyas fan, you will not be disappointed with this one. First listen, I was worried I might get sick of listening through the album as most of the songs are at slow or moderate tempo. Like Tonya's stuff, this is good singer songwriter material. You are not going to buy this for instrumental virtuosity. Solos are simple, just to add some accents to the good song writing. Instrumental accents include banjo (of course with Trish Klein from the Tonyas, harmonica, clarinet, pennywhistle, and whistling. Allison Russell's vocals are very pleasant, a tad bit more bluesy-jazzy than what you'll find in tonyas vocals. Trish Klein provides nice simple pleasant harmonies as she does with the Tonyas. Good original and catchy songs by the talented duo. Looking forward to hearing their second release.

  5. this is becoming part of my most listened to CDs. It takes alot to break into my rotation and every song is a keeper!!
The sound is like a combo of michelle shocked and norah jones, but with more depth. You will not be disappointed with this choice at all!!!!

2 comments about The Border/Alamo Bay.

  1. These were two of my favorite records back in the mid-80's, Americana before Americana even existed. "The Border" evokes beautifully the feel of the southwest, of a hot night with the radio playing some station from Mexico where legend Freddy Fender sings achingly, plaintively, about the dreams of thousands who long for "the broken promised land" of America. "Across the Borderline," written by Cooder, Jim Dickenson, and John Hiatt, is one of the most gorgeous songs you'll ever hear, covered in concert by Bruce Springsteen and rerecorded--with a vocal by Harry Dean Stanton--on Cooder's "Borderline" album. But Freddy Fender's version is the definitive. The music for the rest of "The Border" keeps that southwestern, Mexican-American, feel and vibe, with one more standout track, "Skin Game", an slinky, ominous growl of a song featuring a great vocal by Hiatt and trademark Cooder slide guitar. (By the way, the film, starring Jack Nicholson, is a must-see) "Alamo Bay" is something stranger, for me, not quite as successful, but still worthwhile. The movie (a failure with all the talent involved, Louis Malle directing, and Ed Harris and Amy Madigan starring) is about the clash between exiled Vietnamese fisherman and American fishermen on the Gulf Coast during the late 70s. Cooder's music finds a way to echo this culture clash, particularly in "Theme from Alamo Bay", by combining western instruments and his slide guitar with traditional Asian instruments. The result is truly gorgeous. Also of note is the crunching rocker "Gooks on Main Street" with a vocal by LA punker Lee Ving. Cooder's sountracks, for me, have always been much more interesting than his solo records, whether it be the traditional Appalachian sounds of "The Long Riders" or the Cajun influences on "Southern Comfort". "The Border/Alamo Bay" show him at his best: "The Border", along with "The Long Riders", is in my opinion his best soundtrack, and "Alamo Bay" is not all that far behind. As far as I know, other than the inclusion of certain tracks on the compilation of Cooder's film music released several years ago, this is the first time these have been on CD. They are very much worth owning.

  2. Thank you to those nice folks from Raven Records for making these two soundtracks available on one CD. Amongst some fine instrumentals, several of which appeared on "Music by Ry Cooder" there are two superb vocal tracks that didn't ... "Building Fires" from The Border, and "Too Close" from Alamo Bay (Amy Madigan can sing, too?) ... and even on their own, they make this a great buy.

  1. No surprises as we have heard her play piano on some of Willie's CDs
    We enjoy it very much.

  2. I really enjoyed the two songs when Willie joined his sister, Bobbie, but I was a little disappointed in the rest of the music. It was OK but nothing to write home about. I do appreciate Bobbie Nelson's skills and talents and her background music. Obviously, she and Willie together make the best team. Willie's songs, as usual, were outstanding. --Pastor Switz

  3. Audiobiography BOBBIE NELSON'S NEW ALBUM, "AUDIOBIOGRAPHY" takes a back seat to No One! Although she is the "big sister" of the huge musical Icon WILLIE NELSON, she holds her own in this album. While Willie does sing a few duets on the album with Bobbie playing (as they have for years), Bobbie lets loose with her music, and it's HOT! "Audiobiography" not only tells the story of her life in musical genre, it showcases her awesome talent as a musician in her own right. With a feel of blues, jazz, and somewhat reminiscent of the 1920's to the 1940's, this album will get a lot of play, and you'll find yourself listening over again, many times. This is a "must-have" album, you might get a spare, replaying over and over tends to wear! Kudos to you, Bobbie, you've created a masterpiece!...-RACHEL-

  1. George Winston has not made a poor album, and this one shows how that started. This is one of his earliest recordings and they just got better. Some of these songs found their way to other albums, but most stayed here. This one has more folk music and bluesy-type compostions. I would not call it the blues in any traditional sense, but it is some fine piano playin'

  1. What is all the fuss about who sounds the best and why Van did this?

Is it perhaps 'cos it was fun? I could not care less who sounds the best or whether the songs are the best. If all there was left in the world were a couple of albums like this then who would I be to complain???

And Boogie Chillen got me up and looking for my Canned Heat albums again!!!!! Now there's a band who only knew one rule...enjoy yourself and two fingers to everybody who can't raise a smile!!!

Good for you Van and Linda!

  2. I don't understand why some people have bashed this album. It's not perfect, sure, and it's not one of Van's most stellar achievements....but I am enjoying it thoroughly nonetheless. Why? Because I'm a fan of old-school classic country music and I'm a fan of Van Morrison, and this is like a dream come true. He does a fantastic job of belting out these songs and you can tell how much he loves this music. This is a worthy addition to Van's discography, and a welcome fresh take on classic roots music.

  3. While I am not a great Van Morrison fan, although I have followed his career for more than 40 years [I first saw him live in 1967] I like this little album quite a lot. Country music has never been one of my favorite genres, but Van and Linda make it sound quite enjoyable for me here. Of course it is not one of the great master pieces of the last half century, but I find I often enjoy the little not so polished gems more. Very good backing band and mostly a nice choice of songs [even Cadillac sounds OK to me]. And the fun all the musicians had making this record comes through very clearly. So in my opinion it is definitely enjoyable fun music.

  4. I THINK THIS CD WAS GREAT! I WOULD EVEN GIVE IT 4 1/2 STARS.
IT'S NOT THE OLDER VAN MORRISON.YOU CAN,T BE AN ARTIST AND NOT TRY DIFFERENT THINGS, IT GETS BORING. THIS CD HAS SOME R&B AND ROCK~ROLL AND ALSO SOME COUNTRY SOUND TO IT.I THINK LINDA LEWIS PLAYS A GREAT PIANO AND SOUNDS GOOD WITH MORRISON.IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU TIRED,IT MAKES YOU GET UP AND SHAKE YOU BOOTY.I PLAY IT WHEN I FEEL LIKE PARTYING. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A OPEN MIND AND TRY DIFFERENT SOUNDS,THAT'S WHAT MAKES LIFE SO INTERESTING,WITHOUT IT YOUR NOT EXPANDING YOUR HORIZON!! :~)

  5. Interesting. One and two stars, five stars...apparently this album really divides the Red Sea.
Well, if you hate country music and 50s rock n' roll you obviously aren't going to like this album very much. Sure, there are couple of blues covers and a good original ("No Way Pedro"), but the bulk of this album is made up of songs by men like Hank Williams, Otis Blackwell, and Dave Bartholomew.

Van Morrison duets with Jerry Lee Lewis' sister Linda...well, it actually sounds more like she is singing harmony vocals half the time, but she plays some terrific, rollicking piano not unlike her brother's.
Will you like this album? Well, this is not a typical Van Morrison album, obviously. He doesn't usually cover three Hank Williams-songs on one CD...doesn't usually cover Hank Williams at all, and nor does he do "Old Black Joe" or "Crazy Arms".
These are NOT soulful rhythm & blues-renditions of those songs either; this is country & western and ol' time rock n' roll, everything in the spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis. Even "Boogie Chillen" and "Think Twice Before You Go" is played a la Jerry Lee rather than John Lee Hooker, and while Morrison is in fine form vocally, a lot of devoted fans will probably disapprove of him doing such a "lightweight" record.

Me, I love Van Morrison's music, but I don't need him to record a new "Moondance" every time, and I enjoy this fun meat-and-potatoes album. How can you not enjoy a swinging piano-driven slice of proto-rock n' roll like "Real Gone Lover"?
It sounds like Morrison and Lewis are having the time of their lives pounding out 13 songs they love, R&B, blues, country, and rock & roll in between each other. And everything sounds like it was played by a tough little bar band on a Saturday night, easy and unforced.

"You Win Again" is a fun little roots record; it's not great art, but it's not a self-conscious "tribute album" either, it's just good fun.
    3 3/4 stars. Lighten up!

5 comments about What's the Word.

  1. they definitely live up to their name, especially the fabulous part, with this cd. dynamite!

  2. The first few albums of this band are really classic rocking blues and this is one of their best.Thoroughly recomended to anyone who may be just looking at the band and thier music.

  3. When a band plays the blues as well as these guys did, it's hard to find the right words to describe their achievement. Suffice to say, Jimmie Vaughan is the master of understatement on guitar; Kim Wilson's voice is rich and soulful, and his harp playing is incendiary; "in the pocket" barely begins to describe Keith Fergusen's bass playing; and both Mike Buck and Fran Christina (who each play on about half the tunes) lay down a backbeat that is impossible to resist.

All the early T-birds albums are worth owning, but this one is my favorite, for its sheer consistency. "Runnin' Shoes" is band's take on an old blues standard called "Meet Me At The Bottom" which highlights Kim's perfect control of his voice. "Low Down Woman," a straightforward mid-tempo blues, has some of his most amusing lyrics. "Extra Jimmies" and "Jumpin' Bad" display the prodigious talents of Vaughan and Wilson, respectively (not to mention the fluid bass of Fergusen), and "The Crawl" should be on every jukebox in the country!

Enhancing an already perfect album, the CD reissue adds two bonus live cuts, one of which ("Bad Boy") is not on any other T-birds album. It's no surprise these guys sound just as good live as in the studio.

If you are looking for an example of how electric blues/boogie should be played, look no further.

  4. On the Fabulous Thunderbirds second CD, Kim Wilson and Co. consolidate the (yes) fabulous sound that made the first CD Girls Go Wild such a classic. "Jumpin' Bad," a high-octane, harmonica-fueled instrumental, was their concert opener for years and gives Kim perhaps his best showcase as a harpist. "You Ain't Nothin' But Fine," another high-speed romp, is indeed so fine that short-lived supergroup Rockpile covered it on their Seconds of Pleasure album. (This was truly high praise; Rockpile included New-Wave luminaries Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe in it's lineup while the T-Birds were totally unknown at the time.) And if you love great guitar, check out Jimmie Vaughan's hot licks in "Extra Jimmies" and listen to him really tear up the dance floor in "The Crawl". Great solos! "Runnin' Shoes" is actually the retitled blues standard "Meet Me at the Bottom," which was covered by everyone from The Rolling Stones to Savoy Brown; Kim's singing here is at his most funky and authoritative. There are also two bonus songs here (not three; one is merely an introduction to the live cuts) and they cook; Kim especially fine on "Scratch My Back" (a number they would later sing live on CBS This Morning). Finally, "Los Fabulosos Thunderbirds" is a wonderful little band ditty with authentic-sounding Mexican DJ El Mero Guero (really bassist Keith Ferguson) giving a sample of how the T-Birds would sound broadcast over 1960's Mexican radio. Priceless! So, if you want to know What's The Word?.....in a word, fabulous!

5 comments about Takin' My Time.

  1. After releasing their slammin debut disc, After 7 appeared with a very worthy follow up disc with Takin' My Time. The disc featured three beautiful slow jams Can He Love You Like This, Takin My Time and their cover of Baby I'm For Real. All in all an excellent vocal trio that combines state-of-the-art, uptempo New Jack Swing tunes with classic romantic ballads.

  2. R&B trio After 7 drops an impressive release Takin' My Time and this is a bottle of wine. Members Melvin, Kevon and Keith have a sexy, mature sound similar to the likes of Babyface (as two of the members are his brothers). "Can He Love U Like This" has the feel of a classic 70's song by the lyrics over a modern slow groove topped off with a kiss. Attempting and accepting the changes for being with one person and it tells the story in the words that anyone attempting could understand on "Truly Something Special". Track 5 consists of two songs that are both remakes "Baby I'm For Real" and "Natural High". The medley of the songs by the group is just as good as the originals. The highlight for this album is found with the title track for the vocals and the range by After 7 with depth and emotions. "G.S.T." is the acronym for good sex tonight and that's all that needs to be said about this one in particular. To compliment the mood, "Love By Day, Love By Night" adds to the dim lights "...so brace yourself baby..." as stated in the song. There are also two interludes taken from the title track to introduce the mood and to close this LP off. As the group's name may insist, Takin' My Time should be played After 7.

  3. I love this album, The best I have heard in a while. Music now days don't have the same feel as this entire album from track one until the end, you just fall in love!!!! A must have for your collection if nothing but for the title track! Taking my Time!

  4. I RECENTLY GOT MY HANDS BACK ON THIS SET,AND I REALIZED JUST HOW MUCH I REALLY MISSED IT.FROM THE JUMP OFF ALL ABOUT LOVE,I KNEW THIS ALBUM WOULD BE TRULY SOMETHING SPECIAL,AND IT WAS(IN MY OPINION)THEIR BEST WORK.THE MOST MEMORABLE SONGS TO ME ARE THE TITLE TRACK WHICH ALONG WITH MY FAVORITE TRULY SOMETHING SPECIAL WERE VERY MUCH SLEPT ON BY THE RADIO,BUT THEY WERE VERY GOOD SONGS.ALSO ALL ABOUT LOVE WHICH WAS LARGELY SLEPT ON.THEIR COVER OF BABY I'M FOR REAL/NATURAL HIGH WAS FLAWLESS,AND CAN HE LOVE YOU LIKE THIS SEEMS TO BE EVERYBODY'S FAVORITE OF THIS SET.KICKIN'IT WAS ALSO A VERY POPULAR CLUB SONG AT THE TIME.I CONSIDER THIS ALBUM ANOTHER ONE OF MY"TIMELESS CLASSICS".

  5. After 7 never got the Love they Deserved.Baby I'm for real done Classy with Natural High is a Good Song. The VOcals are Strong as always.this is a Good Mixture Of Up-tempo&Slow-Jams.they are very Underrated&that's a Shame.
