  1. I wanted to get this album when it came out back in 1988, but I got it in summer '89. I can't tell you how many times I sang along to She's On The Left and All Because of You and its spare sections! Can't Go Back on A Promise I still like! The other songs like One Love, One Dream, Cindy, You Can't Get Love from A Stone are some other super efforts. Jeffrey Osborne had his 5th best album after the '82, '83, '84 and '86 albums with this one. I never thought that he would pull this one off in a year that Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat and Al B Sure dominated R&B but he proved to be just as competitive. One of his finest works as an artist and a more mature sounding effort too.

  2. From the poppy synths to the tight, slick grooves of urban contemporary. From the happy proclamation of love in the opening title track, to the painfully romantic lament of Cindy, this disc is compelling. The fact that many critics dismissed it, upon release, such as Ron Wynn, who in 2 words summed up his opinion "Rather Drab" kept many from making this a purchase of theirs. There's also a demeaning factor that A&M upon closing in the mid nineties (it opened again in 1999) deleted a great deal of its catalog...including every album by Herb Alpert (co-owner of the label) and Gato Barbieri...saving only huge hitmakers such as Janet Jackson, Sting, Sheryl Crow, among others. They did still print Osbornes first albums but in limited quantity and only kept one LTD disc in print as well. Hopefully Universal will at least reprint these albums so people can hear this mans voice. its there, its hot, and its still so entertaining. If they were remastered it might even make me re-buy them. Get this if you can!

  1. This album is amazing; simply Ted Hawkins with his very rudimentary solo quitar accompaniment. I gather most cuts were recorded at a residence or in radio studios. Nonetheless, the sound quauty is good and the performances come across as heartfelt and "authentic." This music cannot be easily categorized... blues, pop, soul... who cares. The feeling is there. The enunciation of the lyrics is another real strength. Every word comes through and many will break your heart. I do not know which songs Hawkins wrote. Many of them are familiar to me, but even if they are you feel you've heard them for them first time. I bought some other Ted Hawkins albums, some with musician backup and studio recording, but this one comes closest to what is unique about this performer. A cross between Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Sam Cooke, a capella, if you can imagine that.

  2. Where do I begin with the praise for this amazing singer? Should i tell you that it brings tears to my eyes? That I get choked up at the sheer beauty, soulfulness, and unparallelled musicality of Ted Hawkins?

If you love soulful singers, you need this album in your life. The comparisons with Sam Cooke are no b.s. Ted Hawkins was touched by God. There are only a small handful of singers in this category. Some of them: Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, Nina Simone, Hank Williams, and Patsy Cline.

I wish to God I had seen this man sing in person.....he will heal your soul with the honey balm of his voice.

  1. Released shortly before the U.S. compilationThe Very Best of Michael McDonald came out with the same covers but without the Doobie Brothers and session tracks.
1-4 are Doobie Brothers songs. Oddly enough they included the "female" version of You Belong to Me in the liner notes but Michael of course changed the lyrics. Also "Minute By Minute" from the live "New York Rock and Soul Revue" is included as are session work with David Pack ("I Just Can't Go") and Aretha Franklin (Ever Changing Times)

  2. THIS CD IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE AMERICAN EDITION,LOOK AT THE TRACKS! THE DOOBIES,ARETHA,EVERY GREAT SINGLE IN ONE CD,A MUST FOR YOUR COLLECTION.

  3. I was a big fan of Michael Mc Donald since he was in Doobie Brothers. Listening to this album brings back old memories. Most hits are here: Takin' it To The Streets, What a Fool Believes, On My Own, Yah Mo Be There, Sweet Freedom (single version), Ever Changing Times, etc. Unfortunately the longer version of Sweet Freedom is not here. His collaboration with David pack is also here. The sound quality is good. If you like Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins, Steely Dan, early Toto, then you must have this album. it's a good place to start enjoying Mc Donald's works.

1 comments about Philadelphia Folk Festival - 40th Anniversary.

  1. I love this album because it brought back memories of my attending the Festival. It's a great way to discover a lot of new (and old) people such as John Prine, Mollie O'Brien, Richard Thompson, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and so many others. I realize that space was at a premium but I'm sorry Judy Roderick (who was a wonderful blues singer and very big in Philly) and the Greenbriar boys were left out. John Prine's Hello, in There and Richard Thompson's Beeswing are wonderful. In fact, the latter version is more haunting (if it's possible) than the recorded version and the song never fails to make me cry. Thompson is brilliant.

Even if you've never attended the Festival, it is worth getting for the joyous music on it.

  1. This is the album that started it all - for both Colin and myself. He's the consumate performer - i'm the fan. Make that BIG FAN. I'm sure that if I had never saw the video for Voodoo Thing on Much Music (back when I lived in Canada), I would have eventually checked out this guy. He's good. Good music speaks a language all it's own - and Colin knows that language like a second one. I'm sure I would have heard him eventually. If you like Colin, but have not checked out his first - do yourself a favour - pick it up. It might not be as mature as his later stuff - but that goes without saying for virtually everyone. This album sets the stage for what was to come later - and does so with gusto. After all, this is the album that Colin made after SRV gave him the push he deserved. Colin had a lot to say, and he covered all the bases - rock, blues, jazz, it's all here and more. All in all, this is a great album that should be in everyone's collection. These days, and for the past four years, I make it my mission to let as many Aussies hear the magic of Colin James' albums - and so far it's been all positive.

  1. This album is really wack. There are too many samples and the lyrics are happy but get corny after a while. "Don't Go" was okay. Willing and waiting was good, Friends is good, Love @ 1st sight was really good, Makin love has a good opening riff, Special part of me was touching and Press on was good the rest of the album was terrible.

  2. I almost thought this was released in another country, this is not one of her best albums. Kind of forgetable, nothing like 411,Share My World, or even My life.

  3. Totally agree. This CD was g-a-r-b-a-g-e. I think Mary was trying to mend fences with Puffy. A testament that she is not the out of control diva people have always tried to claim. However, after this she'll probably be a bit more business savvy. Giving Puffy the reigns was a major mistake.

Don't get me wrong. Puffy's strong suit is remixes. Should Mary ever decide to do a remix anthology of all her solo joints and featured appearances over the past 15 years - CALL DIDDY GIRL! He'll give those tracks the hookups they need. Otherwise, he should never be allowed in any studio during the creative process with real musicians. He's best adding a dash of flavor afterwards; usually biting a slamming 80's sample.

Anyways all the great singers - except Chaka Khan - have had a few bad albums that were commercial failures and/or lacked any serious material worthy of radio airplay.

Love and life. Live and learn.

  4. This was a decent album but in no way could there ever be another My Life let alone Puffy is wack nowadays. This was a good album standout tracks "Love @First Sight", "Willing &Waiting", "It's a Wrap",and "Feel Like Making Love". It didn't sell as good as some of her previous works but the Mary fans shouldn't be disappointed, but "The Breakthrough" is another classic under Mary's belt.

  5. Since they made 2 classic albums together, Mary and Diddy decide to do it one mo gin. The results are a good album but far from classic.

    Top Joints:
    Don't Go
    When We
    Ooh!
Willing & Waiting (Top Song on the album)
    Feel Like Makin Love
    It's a Wrap
All My Love (Flips that Grand Puba beat)
Ultimate Relationship (A.M.) (Get ya Bone on!)
