  1. FEEL THE BUZZ-SPACIN': If you'll pardon the pun, this is a clever "pot-pourri" put out by Polygram (one of several, actually) concerning America's fave pastime, and I don't mean hittin' the horsehide. Such classic psychedelic fare as Donovan's MELLOW YELLOW (and, by way of Vanilla Fudge, his SEASON OF THE WITCH), Love's frenzied freak-out 7 AND 7 IS, the single length edit of Iron Butterfly's IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA, and one shot garage band Count Five's PSYCHOTIC REACTION are just some of the "hits" here. You also get to ingest Hoyt Axton's anti-drug anthem THE PUSHER from Steppenwolf, the smokey haze of Commander Cody's SEEDS AND STEMS (AGAIN), and John Prine's tongue (and maybe something else) in cheek ILLEGAL SMILE. This is high grade stuff. Indulge thyself. RATING: FIVE TOKES

  2. This cd really sucks. My hillbilly junkie uncle Kevin Padgett of Heber Spring's Arkansas would love it though.

  3. The Dead and Iron Butterfly work very well together unlike the disappointing team of Dyan and the dead. This CD is sweet and I think you should give it a try

  1. This album is extremely rare, it will be a good adition to those who like me collect anything they can find done by the best band on earth. The songs on it are no exactly Pink Floyd's best but if you are a collector this is a must.
    Ronald Recinos

  2. I bought this album for the two Pink Floyd tracks ("Interstellar Overdrive" and "Nick's Boogie"), but find that I more often listen to the fascinating, but now generally forgotten, bands which make up the other tracks. Names like Vashti and Chris Farlowe may not ring many bells now, but they were obviously in touch with the times, as they seem to perfectly capture the underground youth culture of England in the late 60s. The music is interspersed with interviews of people from Mick Jagger to Michael Caine, which act as introductions to the music, as they cover issues ranging from youth violence to the loss of the British Empire.

If you have any kind of interest in the culture of late-60s England, this CD should be part of your collection. The music, from the Marquess of Kensington's lament about the fall of the aristocracy, to orchestral arrangements of the Rolling Stones's "Paint it Black", to the catchy pop of the Small Faces, to the instrumental experimentation of Pink Floyd, provides a fascinating glimpse into the underground social and music scenes of the time.

  3. This album is very entertaining to listen to, if you have something else you're doing. Unless you are getting high and want some music to accompany you, this isn't the best album to concentrate on. If you are listening to this album, I suggest you have something else to do. Treat it as background music.

5 comments about Positively 60's.

  1. From the very first track, the sixties are back, and it's like they never went away.

In addition to classics such as The Weight, Get Together, Eve of Destruction, Going up the country and so on, you are surprised by tunes you had probably forgotten or never even heard, like Age of Aquarius from Hair, White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane and Lodi by Creedence Clearwater Revival. This is more about reinventing than reliving the sixties and a great reminder of what the Summer of love was really about. A very American sixties compilation, the title sums up the contents very well. This is highly recommended either if you were there at the time or you just wish you were.

  2. Having been a child in that era and just discovering rock music, this really brings back some memories from that part of my life.
I actually bought this as a gift for my son who somehow got really into 60's music (maybe my giving him my entire 60's/70's vinyl collection sparked his interest?). Anyway, we've both enjoyed this collection, and i highly recommend it to any old hippies as well as new-age hippies. Grrroovy!

  3. Album has many of the songs that I remember from this period.
In these days when radio stations are corporately held and have political agendas, we don't hear the dissent that is out there.

It is great to hear songs from the time when individuals thought that they could make a real difference.

  4. I'm your typical extremely attractive man with above average intelligent and exceptional slow pitch softball ability but boy did I miss out on the sixties. I picked up this CD while riding a carousel and this thing is totally cool. I heard it and said, Is that freedom rock? Well, turn it up man! I don't know what half these songs are about because I'm not whacked out of my mind but they sure are cool What the heck is a Hurdy Gurdy Man? I don't know, but it's got the flow of the DOC. I'm kind of a hippie because I drive a renault alliance so this music is something I'm completely down with. It's not Hasselhoff, but at this point of time, the world wasn't ready for Hasselhoff. It was ready for White Rabbits, incense and peppermints and Hurdy Gurdy Men. It was a cool time that I missed out on.

  5. I bought this CD years ago on a discount rack at a book store. It was a real find. Even now, it very regularly migrates out to my car for longer trips as well as deliverance after a day at work. The 60's were, to a large part, the golden age of pop and the birth of non-classical FM programming. This CD captures much of this era.

To my ear, the first CD is lososely centered on lighter songs like California Dreaming, Hurdy Gurdy Man and Bus Stop. There are some other really fine songs here - songs like For Your Love and The Weight. Also included are Midnight Cowboy's Everybody's Talking, Feeling Alright, and Time of the Season - all winners.

The second CD is in general more protest oriented, starting with Give Peace a Chance and ending with the incomparable Eve of Destruction. What CD of the 60's is complete without songs of protest? Also included are I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag, Going up the Country, and What About Me. There are also some pure pop tunes here - Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In and In The Year 2525. There are also some of the best songs around for my money - the classic Gimme Some Lovin and the beautiful A Song For You.

Not all songs are personal favorites, but then what compilation can be? However, I hardly ever skip tracks, even in the car. This CD is a winner. In the words of Joni Mitchell, "Songs to aging children come. I am one."

3 comments about Acid: Final Frontier.

  1. This is the biggest pile of s..t I've ever had the displeasure to purchase. After listening to it and looking back at the reviews on this page, I've come to the conclusion that the other reviewers on this page are on the brown acid that destroys your ability to tell what is actually good music.

This compilation consists entirely of titles that look good on the back of a CD cover but in reality are nothing but the worst tracks (sound or substance) by Hendrix, Chicago, Santana, Hawkwind, Can, Amon Duul, etc. Even the more obscure artists are represented by bad recordings, either poorly recorded live tracks or songs that could not possibly have ever been meant to see the light of day.

This compilation was also released as In Search of Space: The Sixties To The Seventies and the reviews are more accurate at this link In Search of Space: The Sixties To The Seventies than the ones on this page.

This thematically designed compilation is nothing close to what it says it is: a waste of money.

  2. Though this compilation will likely interest only die-hard 60s survivors, it should excite any who have an interest in the evolution of acid rock and in 60s blues. What caught my attention is that many songs are those you have heard by others and would not expect to hear covered by those you see here. A couple good examples are the covers of the Beatles and Dylan by Santana and Arthur Brown respectively. I am of the 60s and there is enough here I hadn't heard that I just had to buy it.
    Here are my favorites:
    1) Canned Heat's take on Dust My Broom. I don't like much of what Canned Heat did, I really like this.
    2) The Electric Flag's I Was Robbed Last Night. Humorous and bluesy, it just cooks.
    3) A new take by Chicago on their hit 25 or 6 to 4. This isn't the album version you are used to. It will knock you out.
    4) Tim Rose's Hey Joe. Never heard it done this way. An excellent cover.
    5) Pink Fairies tackle the Rolling Stones' Midnight Rambler, and they do a hell of a job.
    6) Jimi Hendrix scores with a great instrumental Two In One Goes.
I'd never heard it, and I'd never have guessed.
    7) Lovin' Up a Storm. This is Jimmy Page? Sounds like great rockabilly to me.
    8) Snagrom's Jonestown evokes a certain time and place.
    9) I've heard a lot about Can lately. Like Inobe God is bizarre but interesting enough to make me want to hear more.
    10) Jimi Hendrix again. I've heard his Red House before, but never like this!
    11) Little Red Rooster is an old song but gets a gutsy treatment from The Misunderstood.
    12) The Groundhogs were under-rated as a blues band. Listen to Express Man and wonder why. T S McPhee is one of the 60's forgotten blues pioneers.
There are other songs I like, and though I like them as well, the inclusion of a couple of widely known and popular Yardbirds tunes seems a bit lazy. Hawkwind, a band that has been recently and belatedly praised in MOJO and UNCUT gets a song on each disc, though none of them is a favorite. Each CD has a cover showing the famous part of the English release of Blind Faith. There seems to be no logical sequence to the music, but the sequence that is given works just fine.
I got my copy at a much higher price recently at an Escondido record store. I should have checked the internet first before surrendering to impulse. You can get your's at a quarter of what I paid if you can get it as offered here below ten dollars. This is an unusual compilation at an amazingly unbeatable price, so get yours before its jacked up! I highly recommend this CD!

  3. I BOUGHT THIS ONLY FOR A COUPLE OF JIMI HENDRIX TUNES AN 8 MIN VERSION OF RED HOUSE, THERE IS AN AWSOME ACOUSTIC/ELECTRIC VERSION OF (HEY JOE) WITH SOME DIFFERENT LYRICS IN THE FIRST MINUTE OF THE SONG BUT WELL DONE BY -TIME ROSE-ON DISC TWO IM HAPPY A STUMBLED ONTO THIS WEIRD CD SET

  1. What an unexpected treat! Not only does this disc feature the original 11:02 version of Time Has Come Today (the only one worth listening to IMHO) but it also contains the full 6:42 version of Hocus Pocus. The sound quality of this disc is excellent, too! ALL THIS FROM K-TEL???!!! We all remember K-Tel as being one of the dreary marketers of schlock 8-Tracks on late night and Sunday afternoon TV! Dreadful songs on an 8-Track tape guaranteed jam even the best Ampex machines. Not so here. A quality release. I just wish they would have included some text about each song. All you Hippie Chicks, get your peasant dresses down from the closet! Dudes, grab your fringed buckskin coats! Let's groove, man.......

  2. I enjoy this album. It contains the LONG version of Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Bros.

5 comments about Flower Power: Psychedelic Rock Classics.

  1. This is one of your classic hodgepodge albums. Trot out a recognizable '60s phrase like "Flower Power," put day-glo Summer of Love cover art on it, and call it "psychedelic."

The individual songs range from OK ("Reach Out of the Darkness") to great ("White Rabbit," "Crystal Blue Persuasion," and "Incense and Peppermints"), but these songs really don't have much to do with each other besides the obvious fact that they were all recorded in the '60s.

The Seeds would probably be offended to have "Pushin' Too Hard" labelled as a flower-power hippie song. These guys were garage/punk, NOT a flower-power band.

"Did you ever have to make up your mind" is not even the Lovin' Spoonful's best song, and it is about as far from "psychedelic" as you can get. Same goes for "California Dreamin'."

I can hardly think of a worse juxtaposition of songs than the slight, corny "Along Comes Mary" (slightly psychedelic, but only in the coy lyrical content), being placed right after "White Rabbit." Or the nice but bubble-gummish "Green Tambourine" being placed right next to "Psychotic Reaction." The track sequencing is your typical "slap a bunch of songs together" job.

But for $8, I probably should not be too critical. Taken for what it is -- just a way to get a few good '60s songs -- it is certainly worth the price. Just don't expect it to follow its supposed "psychedelic" theme.

  2. FOR 8 BUCKS OWN SOME GOOD CLASSIC PSYCHEDALIC TUNES WHAT A STEAL THIS WAS A GREAT DISCOVERY.

  3. This is definitely one of the coolest song lists I've seen of all the various pop hits of the 60's CD's (and there's alot). If you're a collector, chances are you own most of these songs already, but how could you beat such a line up?

  4. This an excellent compilation of sixties tunes by the original artists.I`m a fussy one though. Now let`s get a cd with the likes of Keith Barbour`s ECHO PARK, The Sand Pebbles LOVE POWER, Norman Greenbaum`s SPIRIT IN THE SKY, all together on one cd with rockin` instrumentals like Paul Mauriat`s LOVE IS BLUE, Raymond Lefevre`s AME CALINE(soul coaxing) and Mason Williams CLASSICAL GAS. Of course let`s not forget the tunes of Mr. Acker Bilk or Burt Kaempfert. This is just a dream for a fifty year old, to get everything I`m looking for on about ten cd`s. This one is surely a good start!

  5. ALL ORIGINALS. YEP...
