4 comments about Daytrippers: The Definitive 60's Collection.

1. I bought this collection a couple of years back and I've been delighted with it. It has grown on me and I felt I should do my bit to bring Daytripper's average up. Don't get me wrong, this music isn't going to be to everyone's taste. If you want a greatest hits collection, this ain't it. However, if you think you might like a bunch of off the wall and just plain interesting stuff which might take you years to collect elsewhere, this is for you. PS Just who is Snagrom anyway? Jonestown was in '74, I think, so this can't be a sixties track can it?



2. A decent collection of psychedelia, I must say. At least they have the Nice and The Status Quo, but one band struck me in particular, Snagrom, whose Jonestown was featured on this set. It is a beautifully haunting piece and this track is the only one I know of that is available.



3. I can't say that this is really a *definitive* collection, but it has its virtues. I count 13 hit singles from the time in their original versions, and more if you allow for non-original versions (like the sitar version of Heart Full of Soul). And there are other old favorites here that were not hit singles: my folk group used to do two of the three Donovan songs, and we get some souvenirs of great acts that never topped the charts, like Dr. John, Pentagle, Captain Beefheart and John Lee Hooker. Sure, there's some filler, but if you think the '60s was all hit singles and superstars... either you weren't there, or you were, but can't remember it! For the price, this isn't a bad package for those who don't already have most of these songs on other recordings, or those who'd like to unload the old vinyl copies!



4. What is this? Except for half a dozen semi-decent songs, the rest sound like a 60's compilation of studio rejects; a "worst songs of the 60's" by dorkie-named groups I never knew existed. Folks, save your money! Even at the price, this box set is a total rip-off. Don't be fooled by the names of good bands; their songs are crappy as well.

1. Van The Man is a tremendous songwriter, and hearing his songs done by others confirms this.

   As far as the previous review, while Van is most definitely The Man, it is just his songs on this CD, sung by others. There is a wide variety of quality here, from Goldie Hawn slaughtering "I Wanna Roo You" to Billy Connolly's great live version of "Irish Heartbeat" accompainied by bagpipes.

2. The Irish pop man, Van Morrison, has done it again with his melodic genius and amazing tunes! You couldn't ask for a better CD by anyone else!

1. Was great to here some of these older tracks again... Rosie Vela's jazzy sound is the high-light of this CD. Great to here Magic Smile again... (She should re-release her Zazu album on CD!)

1. I got this for the song "town without pity" one of my top guitarist songs.
   This is a perfect collection if your not totally into rock all the time, but once in awhile you just want to slam it. Makes this collection fit that bill.
   I give it 5 stars because you can't find anything wrong with any of these selections....but to be honest it is a very odd mix.....but it works.

1. A rare gem I didn't expect to see on CD. I have loved this record since I found it in a used record store in Poughkeepsie in the 80's. Early Elvis the C, Nick Lowe, Dave Edumunds, Wreckless Eric...All recorded live in clubs with real drunk fans out for a good time.



2. This is a wonderfully eccentric, thrilling album. All have unique style except for the boring Larry Wallis, Police Car. Note: Rolling Stone panned it in 1977, except for Larry Wallis. And they always act like they were always so cool..... We must have more Wreckless Eric! Bring his stuff out on CD.

   PS: Clash? since when is there clash on this CD?




3. Okay. I confess I love this album and saw NOTHING about it here on amazon. Protest the lack of info! Every punk worth his or her safety pins should own this classic. It has a heartbreakingly lovely version of the young and angry Elvis Costello singing Burt Bacharach--more honest and also a little meaner than on his other more recent album. Lots of fun punk stuff: Ian Drury and The Blockheads doing Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll, and the Austin Powers of Punk, Wreckless Eric with great big power pop songs. Nick Lowe, too. Much more. Great fun. Happy bouncy punk with a streak of explosive noise and madness. Kind of a classic. A great party album. Looking back (it's almost 20 years old) it seems sweet, insane, and wonderfully optimistic about music in the post-disco era.
   
   You cannot go wrong. Rock on!



4. This is a strange assortment of the artists that were on the Stiff records label in 1977. I saw this tour and the CD brings it all back. There are a number of highlights - I like Wreckless in particular - but the outstanding track is Elvis Costello singing I Don't Know what to do With myself. If you remember the late seventies you must buy this.
