5 comments about Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin.
- Whoever decided that it would be good to get together musicians like Stone Temple Pilots and Helmet and get them to do Ledzep tributes surely deserves a medal - this is awesome stuff. As a Blind Melon fan starved of new input I was a willing sucker, but it was surprising to be so blown away by Zep tributes by Linda Perry, Hootie and the Blowfish and the rest. If you love rock music there's something here for you - if you love LedZep you'll appreciate the respect in each and every of these stunning tributes.
- I'm a Zep fan for 30 years now, still listening to the Zep classics. This disk is one of my favorites as it breathes new life into Zep's old art. Sheryl Crowe's funky interpretation of D'yer Mak'er is particularly good. Fortunately, these artists stayed away from Zep's best known material (although Heart did a great job with Rock'n Roll years ago).
- Encomium:Tribute to Led Zeppelin.
Out of the gate, I'll say my personal favorite here is STP's Dancing Days. The whole understated vibe of it worked. It honors the vibe and feel of the original while STP puts thier subtle stamp on it. Overall, a very cool cover. It reaffirms my belief that STP is one of the most underappreciated 90s rock bands.
Being a big fan of Zep, its nice to see some bands taking the music in a whole different place. Sheryl Crow not my favorite artists by anymeans does a interesting job with D'yer Mak'er. She makes it more poppy, but keeps it interesting. This does have its limits. Tori Amos along with Plant doing "Down By the Seaside" just didn't work for me. Its just too far removed from the original to be recognizable to me.
Others who put on reasonable performances are Hootie and the Blowfish, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Duran Duran and Cracker.
The stinkers of the album are the Rollin's band stuff, Helmet and Never the Bride. Henry Rollin's screaming style and David Yow, just don't compliment the material. Its my belief when doing a cover try to compliment it.
As to the song selection it isn't too bad. The cliche's are avoided ala Rock and Roll or Stairway. You see some interesting choices like Custard Pie and Four Sticks. I would've loved to see someone try to have tackled In the Evening.
Overall, for what it is its interesting. Shows the creativity of the artists taking the material and putting thier spin on it. That equals some good times and bad times.
- I lost this CD a few months ago, but I used to listen to it occasionally. Most of the songs on this disc are very good, but for my money, the best track on here is "Thank You" performed by Duran Duran. I really don't like Duran Duran so I was pretty surprised by that. Most of the other tracks are good too. If you like Zep, this is definately a disc to check out if you are looking for something different.
- Led Zeppelin really is one of the greatest legendary band in the world. They sold more albums than The Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson combined. They even have two of the biggest selling albums of all time. On this compliation popular names like Duran Duran, Sheryl Crow and Hootie & The Blowfish cover very popular Zep tunes. However nobody has done a cover od Zepplin's most popular tune Stairway to Heaven.

- all of the selections are great, even maggie may and i'm not a rod stewart fan. the extended version of "free bird" on this cassette is not to be believed. it's not the extended "live version" which i have on cd and which cannot compare to the version on this cassette. i wish someone could tell me on what cd of lynryd skynyrd this extended version appears. i imagine the cd of this compilation is worthwhile since it includes the great steppenwolf. to get this much geat music in a cassette at this price is wonderful.

1 comments about Psychedelia: Long Strange Trip.
- Like many of the CD compilations in this genre, this CD gives a fair collection of mostly common songs with few unique gems. A good starting point for those who have limited knowledge of psychedelic music. Poorly represents British psychedelic music.

- Was great to here some of these older tracks again... Rosie Vela's jazzy sound is the high-light of this CD. Great to here Magic Smile again... (She should re-release her Zazu album on CD!)

5 comments about The Best of Southern Rock.
- i own about 4 of these southern rock CDs to get a wide enough range of what Southern Rock offers, and these are good songs. For goodness sakes, if you want to dig Skynyrd, buy a double album. I'm old enough to have seen Duane Almann alive, and these slam in the truck CDs work for me for rockin' nostalgia, while commuting. And yes, Ghost Riders is worth the price my wife paid for the CD, I can't get my outlaw album to play in the truck!
- For anyone unfamiliar with "Southern Rock," this cd is a great SAMPLER. However, this is nowhere near the "best of" Southern Rock. I have to agree with the other reviewers in that you would need to include songs from Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Marshall Tucker Band, and more songs from Lynyrd Skynyrd to truly represent the "best of" Southern Rock. In fact, several of the songs on this cd would probably fit better on a cd of "Country rock" selections (i.e., Pure Prairie League & Ozark Mountain Daredevils). What this cd does is provide an excellent spectrum of music that falls into the "Southern rock" genre. From the mellow, easy-listening sounds of "Let Me Love You Tonight" and "Fooled Around and Feel in Love," to the jazzy feel of "Champage Jam" to the hard-driving multi-guitar attacks of 38 Special, the Allman Brothers, and the Outlaws, you get a good feel for the variety that exists even within this style of music. Of course the presence of "Ramblin Man," "Sweet Home Alabama," and "Ghost Riders in the Sky" alone make this cd worth the price of admission! The South's Gonna Do it Again!
- I'd just like to say that there just aint enough Skynyrd on this compilation. I do like The Allman Brothers Band but one song from the Skynyrd, the greatest southern rock band of all time come on. And why is it that on all these "southern rock" or "classic rock" compilations for Skynyrd they always put in songs like Sweet Home Alabama or Free Bird? I love those songs (especially Free Bird) but they're getting played out and that does no good for the band. They should put songs like The Needle and the Spoon on there.
- Anytime you overlook Molly Hatchet & Blackfoot when your talking Southern Rock, you overlook a major portion of the hard drivin, butt thumpin down south style.
- How can a southern rock compilation be complete without at least one song from the Marshall Tucker Band, or does that have something to do with licensing?

1 comments about Axe Gods: Rock's Greatest Guitarists.
- I got this for the song "town without pity" one of my top guitarist songs.
This is a perfect collection if your not totally into rock all the time, but once in awhile you just want to slam it. Makes this collection fit that bill.
I give it 5 stars because you can't find anything wrong with any of these selections....but to be honest it is a very odd mix.....but it works.
