5 comments about We're All Normal And We Want Our Freedom: Tribute To Arthur Lee & Love.

  1. It's admirable that these young musicians would pay homage to Arthur,Bryan, and Johnny. However save your ears and money and just buy the real best of package by Rhino called "Love Story". The remake of Alone Again Or on this compilation is the worst I have ever heard. If you want to hear a good remake version listen to The Damned. The performances and musicianship on this album don't stand up to what the songs deserve.

  2. I am a huge fan of Love originals, and I think you should buy _both_ this tribute album and the originals. They stand separately. Fans of the many popular artists on this tribute will enjoy the compilation, and Love fans can enjoy this as well. Remember that Love is also known for their cover of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book" which caused quite a stir when it drastically changed the original.

In this compilation I love the Teenage Fanclub version of "Between Clark and Hilldale" (sp?), The Gamma Rays' "Softly to Me" is amazing, and I also enjoy Smack Dab's version of "Bummer in the Summer". Only missing is The Damned's version of "Alone Again Or".

It is not a replacement for the originals, but you can enjoy both separately or together. I do.

  3. This tribute translates psychedelia to grunge. I LOVE this tribute. First of all it was one of the first of the glut of tributes. It seems that the bands all really were influenced by the band LOVE. Arthur Lee himself is really into this tribute and it's obvious that it wasn't done to take advantage of Lee's popularity. There's a refreshing niavity to it, I'm not sure they knew what they were doing or how impactful the medium of 'tribute album' could be. I love Love and while the originals are great, there's something to a group of inexperienced but passionate musicians forging ahead by paying homage to their roots. Enjoy...

  1. Actually this CD version is a scaled down version of the
8 Track version which was purchased years earlier by
someone in my family. For those of you who are interested,
here's the track listing on the 8 Track version of this
album, and to see how the CD version differs:
Program 1 *How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - The Bee Gees
Ferry Cross The Mersey - Gerry And The Pacemakers
Bus Stop - The Hollies Georgy Girl - The Seekers
It's All In The Game - Cliff Richard
Program 2 **A Summer Song - Chad And Jeremy Glad All Over -
Dave Clark Five I'm Telling You Now - Freddie And The
Dreamers Do Wah Diddy Diddy - Manfred Mann I Go To Pieces -
Peter And Gordon Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Gerry
    And The Pacemakers
Program 3 Trains and Boats and Planes - Billy J. Kramer
A World Without Love - Peter And Gordon *I Started A Joke -
The Bee Gees Hippy Hippy Shake - Swinging Blue Jeans **
Willow Weep For Me - Chad And Jeremy Bits and Pieces -
    Dave Clark Five
Program 4 I'll Never Find Another You - The Seekers
*Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream Stop Stop Stop - The Hollies
Do You Want To Know A Secret - Billy J. Kramer *The Sun
Ain't Gonna Shine - The Walker Brothers
*By Special Arrangement With Polydor Ltd.
**These Tracks Licensed From Ember Records, London

All in all a nice collection of tracks from the
British Invasion era, but it's kind of skimpy
when compared to the 8-track version of the same
album. Perhaps Capitol Records can renew their
agreements with Polydor and Ember Records, or
the parent companies if they are subsidiaries,
so we can get the 8-track version of this album
on CD. Anyways, Bus Stop is a well-known Hollies
tune that was penned by Graham Gouldman, who also
was responsible for a few tracks by The Yardbirds
that are fairly well known (For Your Love and
Heart Full of Soul). Ferry Cross The Mersey was
a pretty big hit for Gerry And The Pacemakers, and
is another pop tune. Gimme Some Lovin has been
used a lot on TV, movies and commercials. This
is one of Steve Winwood's groups in the 1960s.
Traffic and Blind Faith are two others, and it's
basically a good soulful tune that can be sung
too. I'm Telling You Now by Freddie & The Dreamers
is another pop hit that might seem familiar to
some people. Do Wah Diddy Diddy, Hippy Hippy
Shake, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother and
Georgy Girl are familiar pop tunes that have
been used for commercial uses over the year,
so many should be familiar with these hits.
The other four tracks I'm not very familiar
with, but this album runs a little over 30
minutes altogether, and I would recommend
purchasing it if you love music from the
original British Invasion era of rock music.
This contains a lot of pop music on this
    album, however, unlike the manufactured
pop music of some of today's artists, this
pop music is quality pop music, not artificial
    synthesizer manufactured crass commercialized
junk that seems to infest the airwaves these
days. In those days, pop music was actually
worthy of listening to. The lyrics are
thoughtful and the melodies are enticing
    enough to buy it.

4 comments about Best of the Best: 25 Years of Rock.

  1. When FM Radio started to catch fire in the early 1970's, things began to change for the average record buyer. As we were no longer slaves to Top-40 AM Stations {Two AM Stations, all but controlled the airwaves of San Francisco for Rock & Pop in the 1960's.} Progressive FM Stations came on-air in 1967, and then and only then, we got to listen to other Songs than just the: Boss, Top-40.

The King Biscuit Flower Hour was a part of the new and "Cool Radio". The first broadcast of: 18 Feb 1973, featured: The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Blood Sweat & Tears and Bruce Springsteen. The Biscuit was off and running with their weekly show.

This is a 16 Track Collection of Rock Acts from the 1970's-80's. It is a Sampler of what was broadcast every week on The Biscuit. With: The Who, Queen, Genesis, The Kinks, America, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ELP, Kansas, Foreigner, Rush, Blondie, Triumph, Billy Squier, Pat Benatar, BTO and Rick Derringer. This Disc has the Big Artists of that period. Every song included herein was a Hit: Won't Get Fooled Again, We Will Rock You, That's All, Lola, Horse With No Name, Call Me The Breeze, Lucky Man, Carry On Wayward Son, Cold As Ice, Limelight, One Way Or Another, Allied Forces, The Stroke, Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Takin' Care Of Business, Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo.

If you are old enough to remember these Radio Shows from the 1970's & 1980's, this Disc will bring it all back. If you are too young to have ever heard this Show, this will give you a new slant on those words known as: "Classic Rock".

These Disc's are around, and they are cheap. I bought mine at a Used Record Shop for: $2.99. There are around 50 Disc's available of different acts as well including: BB King, Deep Purple and GTR, these are well worth seeking out as well. Just about everybody was standing in line to appear on this Show because it was very popular.

I have heard a few: "Samplers" in my day and some of them were real forgetable, this one is real good.
    Four Stars !!!

  2. Great deal. This item WAS shipped to me, however, I'm VERY VERY disappointed in Amazon's overall lackluster, unreliable (lack of shipping) to military APO addresses. In general, they've shipped to my military APO address about 60% (if that) of the time - for very basic items. Many purchases were not made because items can't be shipped to me, other items I had to have shipped somewhere else and pay additional shipping to get item mailed to me. Shame on Amazon! Unfortunately I've received NO good answer from Amazon!

  3. Yes I know you religiously taped this radio show.
The best stuff is either in the King Biscuit vaults or on your basement cassettes.

  4. Does this sixteen track disc bring back memories for you?Showcasing some of the best known songs from bands that were on the weekly FM radio King Biscuit show,I'll say between 1973-82 serve this release the purpose of being an audio diary for those LIKE myself that were loyal listeners of the show. The liner notes gives several individual's personal account of the Biscuit. Here's mine:I remember when a 'live' lp was indeed something special, before import discs became available by the hundreds, that I would sometimes join a gathering at a friend's house while the party was already in progress.I'd hear, say some live songs from Queen.Tunes that I knew were not on 'Live Killers' and another person would inform me that it was a home tape, recorded off a live FM broadcast from the King Biscuit.I've heard from a reliable source that the bands that were on the Biscuit actually LOVED hearing about fans taping the shows 'cause it would MAYBE lure them to buy the group's older lp's.Even though I'm personally more into the obscure music these days, these mainstream gems will always have a place in my collection. My absolute faves are the Kinks "Lola",Emerson Lake&Palmer's "Lucky Man",The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again",BTO's "Takin' Care Of Business" and Rush's "Limelight".Would make a nice gift.

1 comments about Rockin' 70's, Vol. 1.

  1. Of the two volumes in the "Rockin' 70's" series I have checked out to date Volume 1 is the better of the pair. You will find a lot of the same artists on both volumes, with Three Dog Night ("Joy to the World"), Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Sweet Home Alabama"), and the Four Tops ("Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)"). But the edge goes to this one because it has more hits from the Seventies that you might want to add to your music collection such as Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way," Brian Hyland's "Gypsy Woman," and Dobie Gray's "Drift Away." With songs by Jerry Jeff Walker, Stephen Bishop, and Poco the album is geared more towards the decade and less towards holdovers from the Sixties (i.e., the Grass Roots). Once you get past Three Dog Night and Lynyrd Skynner you could well find the requisite five tracks, especially if you graduated high school in the last half of the decade. There is also more of an emphasis on rock and pop on this one without a touch of the disco madness,

4 comments about Dick Bartley Presents: On The Radio, Vol. 1.

  1. This CD CONTAINS SOME OF THE 45 vERSIONS I'VE BEEN looking for for A Long time inclunding I Saw Her Again Mono Single. Magic Carpet Ride the Mono single which blows away the stereo. For as Muddy as the mono single version is of Magic Carpet Ride is it sounds great with it's jet like beginning and a totally different vocal then the stereo version. Along with another reviewer I agree Cary Mansfield and Dick Bartley did spend a lot of time on this one with the single versions of Sky Pilot and No Sugar Tonight it's all good stuff that's obviously hard to find. Judy In Disguise half stereo half mono that's quite unique. It's one or the other. Hang On Sloopy And Hitchin A Ride Stereo versions are welcome replacing the old fashioned and sometimes muddy mono. If there's one thing I must say to the record compaines whom I think should make more of an effort to put these single versions on band Best Of's so that you don't have frustrated collectors. This whole series should be snapped up by collectors from Varese.

  2. The tracks included in this collection provide an interesting sample of tunes not often found on compilation CDs. However what makes this CD unique is the version of the songs presented. Often, the versions originally heard on a.m. radio were not those available to be purchased by the public then or now. Edited versions for shorter play times, poorly mixed or totally different stereo versions, lyric edits - all kinds of discrepancies can come into play when tunes of that era make it to CD. Here, what you get are the versions as heard on the radio with the added bonus of many appearing in stereo. Of the 14 tracks, 3,5,7-12,14 are stereo with 1,4,6,13 being mono single versions. Track two, "Judy In Disguise" (With Glasses)" is part stereo, part mono. Backround notes on the song and the version included make for interesting reading in the eight-page liner notes booklet. A top-quality comp CD for the casual collector or purist looking for digital clarity of classic a.m. sounds.

  3. One of the most flagrant crimes of Oldies radio is its musical illiteracy. The reduction of twenty years of weekly Top-40's to a single forty song rotation is compounded by the occasional play of the wrong version of a hit. Remakes, alternate takes and hasty stereo remixes substitute for the original radio gold.

Enter syndicated DJ Dick Bartley and Varèse's archivists with a multi-CD set that corrects some of the mistakes, while introducing several alternates of their own. Original mono issues of "Everyone's Gone to the Moon," "I Saw Her Tonight" and "The Letter" are welcome reprieves from the poorly balanced stereo previously available on CD. The hit-single vocal of "Magic Carpet Ride" and the unedited tale of cannibalism, "Timothy, " haven't been widely heard since their initial release. Rare stereo mixes of "Hang On Sloopy" and "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet" stray from the compilation's concept, but are collectible additions to the commonly available mono.

A nice collection of singles, many of which will sound oddly unfamiliar to those weaned on oldies radio.

  4. Cary Mansfield and Dick Bartley must have spent a lot of time getting this one together. This cd contains the original "radio only" edits. These are the songs that you heard on the radio when they were popular."No Sugar Tonight" by The Guess Who, "Sky Pilot" by Eric Burdon, "The Little Black Egg" by The Nightcrawlers, etc. are all in stereo and sound terriffic. If you are a person that wants first class, top quality sounds. This is the one. THIS WILL BE ONE OF THE TRUE COLLECTORS ITEMS IN ABOUT TEN YEARS...YOU NEED TO GET IT WHILE YOU CAN.

1 comments about Epitaph for a Legend.

  1. A superb collection, originally issued as a 2-LP set, that collects rarities from the vaults of Texas' International Artists label. In addition to previously unreleased and demo sides from Texas psychedlia stalwarts such as Red Krayola and 13th Floor Elevators (including incredible pre-Elevators tracks from Roky Erikson and the Spades), there are many fine cuts by obscure garage punk acts such as The Chapparrals, and a terrific cover of the Bee Gees "In My Own Time" by Patterns. The Red Krayola demos (many of which would be re-recorded for their debut) are a treat. Side 3 (on the original vinyl) is perhaps the only downer, as the blues tracks from Big Walter, Lightnin' Hopkins and Dave Allen aren't particularly exceptional. The radio commercial for the Elevators' "Bull of the Woods" is a hoot, as is Roky's spaced out late-70s interview on San Francisco's KSAN-FM.

3 comments about Garage Band Classics.

  1. Hey guys, before you complain about there only being 10 tracks., read the details of the item for sale. It is a cassette and not a CD...

  2. As the previous reviewer pointed out, there's only 10 tracks on the CD.
That's definitely a negative; especially considering some of the similar CD sets that are available from companies like Rhino Records. (If you're into this type of music, a much better value is the multiple CD boxed "Nuggets" set from Rhino records.)
Fortunately, the tracks themselves are good ones. Even Target has been using one of the tracks in some of it's current TV ads. Anyone who's into 60's garage band stuff will certainly enjoy this CD, although it's a bit of a ripoff pricewise for only 10 songs.

  3. Decent collection of '60's garage rock staples. But,come on!Ten songs? You record labels can squeeze over seventy minutes of music on a disc now.Should be at least five to ten more tracks here.I mean, some of us are too lazy or busy to step over to change the disc after a measly 26 minutes.
