- A must have for your Blues Collecton.
- We put this album on after work, the next thing I knew everyone was up and dancing. I haven't heard some of these songs since my childhood when they were played on my great-grandmother's Columbia on rainy afternoons and, of course, we danced. These selecions of the blues masters are too good to miss, a great introduction to the blues.
- I purchased this album (on cassette) about 10 years ago, and have worn my tapes down with repeated use. I cannot describe how happy I am that it is available here on CD. When I purchased this album, I was pretty young and wanted to get a blues "starter set" so that I could learn about the history of the blues, its styles, and its artists. I really reccommend this album for those who want to explore the blues, as you will hear some of the first gritty blues recordings and the progression to today's artists and expression. Of course, any old blues hound will also love this album. Listen to the samples and you'll get an idea of what a fabulous recording this is.
- A great selection for listeners interested in the birthplace of the blues. Disk one is mostly traditional delta blues while two has selections from early rock and roll pioneers in which you can clearly hear the early blue influences. Nearly worth the price of cd alone for Leadbelly's "Midnight Special".
- BUY THIS ALBUM....great selection of blues from the 30's on through the 90's. BoDidley, BBKing, Carl Perkins..Honey Don't...the Killer, Bessie Smith, what can I say a cross selection of music at its best.

- The most puzzling thing about this CD is how little information is known about who the musicians are. They certainly deserved greater recognition. The second most puzzling thing about it is how it can be titled "The complete recordings" and then speak of an additional recording by Mary Deloatch which is not included :-). Then, of course, Sonny Boy and Lonnie are Midwesterns and Marylin Scott (Mary Deloatch) from Virginia. Oh well - the music is great.
"Southwest Pacific Blues" refers to the draft and WWII - a song that is easily topical today; Sonny Boy's bending notes allows an interesting mix of pathos, blues and humor. However, to my ear, Sonny Boy and Lonnie shine in their boogie numbers and in the talking-blues style. The music is raw blues but with a variety that never sacrifices quality.
Mary Deloatch apparently went into the ministry and her Gospel numbers are excellent even if reminiscent of Sister Rosetta Tharp. Here, however, she shines in the risque "I Got What My Daddy Likes" peppered by male laughter and mutterings as a backdrop. One needs moonshine, smoke and dance to polish off the environment. The opening of "Another Woman's Man" could open a Sophie Tucker number, but then it slides into vintage blues with a sultry sax. Add a glass of wine and its pure bliss. Yes, I'll admit this is my favorite track although her Gospel "I'll Ride On A Cloud With My Lord" is a close second when I want to feel-the-Spirit.

- Four discs. Each aproximately 77-78 min. in length. Remastered.JSP has done it again! Given us several hours of good rocking jump blues. The artists range from known(Johnny Otis) to the less well-known(Goree Carter) a singer-guitarist from Texas. This is the music that bridged the gap between blues r&b and rock and roll. These recordings were all made with small to medium sized groups usually consisting of a rhythm section and at least one or two horns. The type of group where the singer and the honking sax try to outdo each other. This is exciting music! Meant to be played loud, preferably with something cold to drink. There is very little let-up from one song to the next-which is a good thing! In the end the artist is almost immaterial because the music is so unrelentenly good, loud and fast. If gut-bucket r&b is your thing-pick this up! And make sure you have something cold to drink with it.

- Alligator Records hit it right on the head when they named this series, "crucial". Yes this series is a crucial must have for any Blues fan, especially if you're a new comer to the Blues sound. I myself had a limited knowledge when I purchased this CD, but this CD changed that quickly. This CD starts off with a cornball version of a swing tune called "She Walks Right In", but about half way through the tune Clarence Gatemouth Brown throws in an awesome guitar solo that foretells the rest of the CD. This CD introduces the listener to one great Blues artist after another and most have that awesome brass section that makes great blues performances seem even better. Notables on this CD include Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland, whom all perform together, Long John Hunter, W.C. Clark, Floyd Dixon and Delbert McClinton. I strongly recommend this CD and all the Crucial Blues CDs not only to new comers but all blues fans.

- The great Erwin Helfer recorded these performances of vintage piano blues and jazz during the late 1950s. The performers were all old enough to have been on the scene in the 20s, but their styles hadn't changed. What we get on this record is at times quite stunning, especially the haunting blues of James Robinson and Doug Suggs or the feisty barrelhouse piano of Speckled Red. Billie Pierce is also great, and her 'Florida Blues' is right in the thick of the female 'classic' blues tradition of Bessie Smith et al. The Sirens Records should be honored for making this material available to the public after all these years.
