  1. 31 absolutely rollicking mid-'60s red, white & blue Frat movers spiked with plenty of obscurities to keep serious collectors on their toes.

5 comments about Kiss My Ass: Classic Kiss Regrooved.

  1. Another tribute...another mixed bag. This one starts off strong with Lenny Kravitz doing "Deuce" with Stevie Wonder on harp followed by a surprisingly good version of "Hard Luck Woman" by Garth Brooks which sounds an awful lot like "You Wear It Well" by Rod Stewart. The next three songs are also strong with Anthrax doing a real rocking version of "She", one of my favorite guilty pleasures "Christine Sixteen" is nicely covered by the Gin Blossoms and Toad The Wet Sprocket doing a very laid version of "Rock and Roll All Nite" that needs to be heard to be believed. Then this tribute takes a nosedive with mediocre performances by Shandi's Addiction, Dinosaur Jr., Extreme and The Lemonheads. Then it makes a nice comeback with "Detroit Rock City" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones who totally made it their own. It finishes off with a very well done orchestral cover of "Black Diamond" by a fellow named Yoshiki.

  2. This tribute album is quite a disappointment, yet it made me discover one of the most talented musician I've ever heard : Yoshiki HAYASHI (leader, drummer and pianist of X-Japan !!). If you liked black diamond, buy hide's tribute album !!

  3. I give this album a 2 *BUT* it's worth a listen. The hands down best cover (and surprisingly so) is Garth Brooks doing Hard Luck Woman. I'll keep this just for that. Good job done by Garth. Two more songs stand out. Yoshiki's Black Diamond and Anthrax's She. Toss the rest out with the garbage. Interesting enough for discussion but no other listeners here.

  4. okay...i've never heard this cd before, but i just think it's cool that one of the hottest greatest artists is on it.....i'm talkin bout yoshiki, but you've proly never heard of him....kiss kicks ass, and it's cool that yoshiki is on the cd....hey! if you like him, check out the greatest japanese rock band (who are unfortunately disbanded now -_-)...X-Japan!

  5. What a concept...produce a tribute album to yourselves! KISS My Ass is the most self-absorbed piece of piffle I've ever heard; yet, it is oddly compelling. When I heard that this was coming out, I thought, "Oh my God, what are they doing?!". Garth Brooks, GARTH BROOKS!! I was prepared for true sacrilege as the fiddle and lap steel replaced Ace's sizzling licks. What a surprise I got when I gave the album a listen! The majority of the versions are not desecrated or butchered, at all; in fact, the 10-gallon hat man himself, Garth Brooks, does a fine version of Hard Luck Woman. Deuce gets funked-up by Lenny and Stevie and is great; Anthrax pulls off a thrashy version of She with the end riff of Let Me Know tacked on for good measure; the Gin Blossoms' Christine Sixteen and The Lemonheads' Plaster Caster are nothing special; Toad The Wet Sprocket slows Rock and Roll All Nite down to a dirge; Calling Dr. Love is the kind of crap I was expecting to hear; J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) does a fine version of Goin' Blind with all of the sleaziness remaining intact; and Extreme does a bang-up job on Strutter with Gary Cherone doing his best Paul Stanley imitation. The last 2 songs though are among the most original; The Mighty Mighty Bosstones ska-tinged version of Detroit Rock City and Yoshiki's strings-only rendition of Black Diamond are what a tribute album is all about--an artist's reworking of the original. Only Lenny Kravitz, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Yoshiki, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are able to pull this off here. The rest of the songs are, for the most part, carbon copies of the original songs. I was really disappointed when I bought KISS My Ass because I felt ripped off. Only 11 songs totaling barely 45 minutes! Here's a news flash: LP's are gone and you can get 78 minutes worth of material on a CD! When I look at the list of all of the artists who wanted to do this project but didn't appear for whatever reason, I wonder why KISS My Ass is so b! loody short! With Public Enemy, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Cypress Hill, and Ozzy Osbourne among the list of those "Missing In Action", who knows what special and unique sounds could have been transformed from a KISS song. I guess we'll have to hope for a KISS My Ass Volume 2: The Lost Tapes to find out! The tattoos from the fans on the inside cover are great! Too bad I couldn't get in on the action! Though it is questionable whether KISS My Ass is a true KISS release, I felt that, like Killers, it holds a special place among the KISS albums so that is why I have chosen to include it in my reviews.

3 comments about The World of the Zombies.

  1. Tribute CDs are often a mixed bag, and this one's no exception. "World of the Zombies" is a powerpop tribute to one of the most talented but, until recently, most overlooked bands of the '60s. The idea, then, of popularizing their songs through 90s powerpop reinterpretations is a promising one.

Unfortunately, the product is merely "OK." The Posies are excellent as usual, and several other tracks are pleasant standouts, but others--including limp re-readings of "Girl Help Me" (one of my favorite Zombies songs!) and "She's Not There"--don't really go anywhere.

All in all, an OK purchase, but somewhat pointless now that the Zombies have been so...critically rehabilitated, perhaps? Whatever the case, make sure you listen before you buy.

  2. I bought the CD due to the Seattle Pop Bands on board, but this has turned out to be one of my all-time favorite CD's. The Fastbacks & The Model Rockets have excellent contributions, and The Posies demonstrate just why in fact, the were probably the BEST power pop band of the early nineties. Check this out, as you know it will go out of print + you'll have missed a great piece of Pop heaven.

  3. If you're familiar to the now famous question posed to John Lennon on the Beatles arrival in America (A:"I'm a mocker"), then the hip, aloof attitude of the Brit-Invasion group the Zombies is not something I need to clue you in on. You're "with-it" part of the "in-crowd", and back in '65 everyone was tuned into the groups "Time of The Season". Fast forward to the modern day a-go-go now scene, the Zombies are remembered best as having a couple of minor hits in an overcrowded market of next-big things from the UK, but are preserved thanks to Hollywood's infinite use of "Time Of The Season" in almost every Vietnam-era film. Up in a corner of the NW, where the Zombies as well as the Kinks, the Turtles and Dave Clark Five were the bands from many of the "now" kids' childhood, the kids of today are "hep" to where the Zombies are at. Hence this heady compilation featuring Flop, British Columbia's Zumpano(who almost always sound like the zombies)Young Fresh Fellows, the Fastbacks, the Posies they're all here for the music, man. There's a lot of love in this room.

5 comments about Warped Tour: 2001 Compilation.

  1. This is probably the best warped comp. out there to date. I got this cd about a year ago and i still listen to it all the time.
    Anti-Flag
    Deviates
    Bouncing Souls
    Vandals
    Agent 51
    H2O
    Swingin' Utters
It doesnt get better than that people

  2. I love this Cd. It's one of my top 10 favorite CDs in my collection of over 600. Every song is great, and i think i'll always own this CD. The reason i entitled this review "A Perfect Finish" is because this is the last decent Warped Tour comp that has been released to date, and none will ever top it.

  3. I don't know why everyone doesn't like this CD. The songs are all unreleased and awsome. Greatest punk bands. Best songs: Rancid-Sick Sick World
    Anti Flag-Don't give up
    AFI- A Winter's Tale
    Vandals-SWM
Mighty Mighty Bosstones-Providence is... (this should go on their next cd!)
Casualties-Fight For Your Life! (Saw them at the warped tour, fans went crazy over this one!)

Also check out the new 2002 one

  4. Well I have to say that AFI made this comp worth buying. A Winters Tale incorporates everything about AFI that is great. Tsunami Bomb also has a strong showing and Bigwig had an awesome song. Rancids effort was sub par but they make up for it in their real albums

  5. I went to warped tour last summer, and saw most of these bands, and loved them, and loved the cd almost as much, but in the last few weeks I have totally fallen in love with the ataris song on this album...the recording quality sucks, but it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life...it is worth buying just for this and the new found glory song, but all of them are great!

3 comments about History of Portland Punk, Vol. 1.

  1. Punk rock in the 70's was a backlash against the effete swill that the corporate music industtry was spoon-feeding to the public. The punk scene in Portland was about self-expression rather than style; it was non-commercial and completely unpretentious."The History of Portland Punk vol.1" captures the essence of Portland's underground music scene in the 1970's. I have sentimental reasons for recommending this CD. In the late 70's I shared a house in Portland, Oregon with Bob Glassily and John French of the Rubbers. I hung out with many of the musicians featured on this album. Listening to this CD for the first time brought back memories of half-forgotten friends and rainy Portland nights. I could almost smell the clove cigarettes and stale beer.

  2. this is a bunch of wimpy pale punkers in the pac nw, who cant play thier way out of a wet paper bag. but it has sentimental value if your from there. look i did sumpin! its a terrible representation of me. but i miss dose pee pull too. Mit ur mike

  3. Good selection of Portland groups. Portland was a hot bed of great music. They infulenced the grunge sound that got attributed to Seattle. Hey, Kurt Cobain hung out in Portland because the music scene was better. the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because their were other groups out there that should of been included. have fun,EVL.

2 comments about Entertainment Weekly: The Greatest Hits 1986.

  1. So-so collection from the year 1986 mixing gems like Timbuk 3's deeply cynical and scathing "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades," Howard Jones' pensive "No One is To Blame," Eddie Money's comeback hit "Take Me Home Tonight" (rendered immeasurably essential thanks to the explosive vocals of Ronnie Spector) and The Dream Academy's wispy "Life in a Northern Town," with really lame cuts like Starship's "Sara," Glass Tiger's "Don't Forget Me," Mr. Mister's "Kyrie," Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" and Falco's gimmicky "Rock Me Amadeus." Missing from this collection are Steve Winwood's "Higher Love," Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer," Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls," and Human League's "Human" (each of which was a #1 single in 1986). As a result the dross outnumbers the gems. Pass.

  2. I read another review that said this CD would have the radio version of "Rock Me Amadeus - Falco". I bought it just for that song, only to find out it's the remix. The CD is still worth the $x.xx for the other songs. - All of the other songs are the ones you would expect.

1 comments about The Very Best of Punk & Disorderly.

  1. Oi, this is one of the best 80's punk comp's you can get. 40 songs and one bad quality video. Don't buy this for the bonus video of Peter and the Test tubes. Quality on that is bad and it's running off old cd/vid program to make matters worse! Anyways on to the actual album. Has so many great bands from the Violators to Action Pact! UK Subs to Vice Squad to The Dark!!!! This is the best of a three series called Punk and Disorderly from I believe 81-83. Highly recommend one picks up those too! VL 3 is overall the best of what England had to offer while some of the other volumes have american and sub par brit bands. This cd more or less has almost all of those 3 sets but, in a random chaotic order thats not as well laid out as the orgional lps. Lucky for you if you wish to get the origional LPs amazon carries them!! But, if you just want to check out what the heck was all that fuss over oi and street punk of the eighties and don't want to spend much then grab this double CD set and pogo all night long!
